[FM20] Celtic: Keeping the Bhoys Together

I have made the profile as similar to his FM20 profile as possible. The only notable changes was I had a few spare points so I improved the tactical stats +2 due to him becoming in my eyes a better tactical this season and his motivation +3.

The brief is simple. Try to win 10-in-a-row keeping the squad together. The hard part will be keeping the squad together. Fraser Forster will demand a massive wage to stay at the end of his loan. Likewise Mo Elyounoussi. Odsonne Edouard will be subject to bids every window so keeping him for two seasons will require some big wages. The likes of Kris Ajer, Callum McGregor and Olivier N'tcham will be subject to bids.

Going forward from that. We need a long term contingency plans for them, and a successor to Scott Brown.

Welcome to Lennybol.

July 2019 - Pre-season, Early CL Qualifiers & Staff Recruitment

Pre-season was successful. The squad got up to match sharpness in time for the first round of qualifiers. I thought both draws were pretty tough. Outfits from Poland and Hungary are exactly who you want to avoid in early rounds.

The loss to St. Pauli was a shock, I picked a reasonably strong side. Ferencvárosi dampened the mood in the month's final fixture however the objective for the month was to progress in Europe. We did. Up next a trip to Fir Park.

3rd August 2019 - Scottish Premiership Flag Day

7dWOnmP.png

Starting XI:  Forster, Frimpong, Ajer, Julian, Taylor, Brown (c), McGregor, Forrest, Christie*, Johnston (Elyounoussi 73'), Edouard (Griffiths 73')
Unused Subs: Bain, Elhamed, Bitton, Rogic, Ntcham

Away at Fir Park can prove to be a tricky fixture. That it did. Things were looking positive when Odsonne Edouard broke up the park in a magnificent solo run to put us ahead just before the break. Despite our dominance Mark O'Hara headed home from a corner to level it with less than 10 mins to play. It was Ryan Christie who spoiled the home sides celebrations with a volley just inside the area.

7th August 2019  - UCL Qual 3rd Rnd Leg 1

gP8j9p6.png

Starting XI:  Forster, Elhamed, Ajer (Bitton 58'), Julian, Taylor, Brown (c), McGregor, Elyounoussi, Rogic (Ntcham 86'), Christie*, Griffiths (Edouard 58')
Unused Subs: Gordon, Frimpong, Hayes, Shved

The Fins prove not to be as tough a test as previous rounds. Fir Park hero Ryan Christie stole the show again with an 11 minute 2nd half hat-trick, incredibly scoring twice in the same minute. Griffiths got the opener early in the first half, his first competitive goal of the season. This gives me the opportunity to rest some key players in the 2nd leg.

9th August 2019

BBD21sR.png

A tough, nonetheless manageable draw. Celtic have history with Maribor at this stage of the season and they just eliminated Maccabi Tel Aviv so I would be keen to avoid them. However they lead the tie with a 1-0 away win.

10th August 2019

0J6kyFo.png

0ml33aS.png

Scott Brown picked up an injury that'll see him out of the next 3 fixtures. Including the all important 2nd leg vs HJK. The 4-0 lead gives me confidence that a rotated squad should see the tie off.

10th August 2019 - Scottish Premiership

tV1lm8g.png

Starting XI:  Forster, Frimpong, Ajer, Julian, Taylor (Hayes 57'), Ntcham, McGregor (c) (Bitton 79'), Forrest, Rogic, Christie, Edouard (Griffiths* 79')
Unused Subs: Bain, Elhamed,, Elyounoussi, Shved

A big win over Hibs to put us top. Again it took to late in the first half to take the lead. Odsonne Edouard slotted home a penalty. Up until another penalty on the 82nd min the scoreline far from reflected the run of play with us having an incredible 14 shots on target at this point. Leigh Griffiths rounded off the scoring, bagging himself a brace and a place in the XI in Finland.

14th August 2019 - UCL Qual 3rd Rnd Leg 2

omeAw4l.png

Starting XI:  Bain, Frimpong, Bitton, Julian, Hayes (Taylor 81'), Ntcham, McGregor (c) (Elhamed 54'), Forrest (Shved 54'), Rogic, Elyounoussi, Griffiths*
Unused Subs: Gordon, Ajer, Christie, Johnston

We made 5 changes to the starting line-up from the first leg. It feels like the squad is really gelling now and gaining a bit of momentum. Leigh Griffiths is continuing to give me a headache choosing a starting striker. Another early goal from Griff to ease us into the fixture, putting a free kick into the top corner. James Forrest quickly doubled our lead with a close range effort. The second half I was able to rest a couple more regulars. Marian Shved came on for his debut and netted from outside of the box.

ePx8ftg.png

Starting XI:  Bain, Frimpong*, Bitton (Ajer 58'), Julian, Taylor, Ntcham, McGregor (c), Shved, Rogic (Christie 90'), Elyounoussi, Griffiths (Bayo 58')
Unused Subs: Gordon, Elhamed, Forrest, Johnston

We went 1-0 down after Marvin Bartley converted a poorly defended free kick. We immediately hit back up the other end of the park. I decided to give Bayo a run out as he has 8 in 5 for the reserves so far. It proved to be a good decision when he came on to put us in front. Fullback Jeremy Frimpong put in a MOTM performance and scored his first goal for the club sealing our place in the next round.

19th August 2019

Losing Ryan Christie for at least 3 months is a huge loss. He has been our top performer so far with 7 goals. Luckily we are very strong in centre midfield and Tom Rogic or Olivier Ntcham can step in to complete the midfield trio with Scott Brown and Callum McGregor. I expect to have Christie back around the busy month of December and bed him back into the side.

20th August 2019 - UCL Play-off Leg 1

LtM9H4i.png

Starting XI:  Forster, Frimpong (Elhamed 63'), Ajer, Julien, Taylor, Brown (c), McGregor, Forrest, Rogic, Johnston (Elyounoussi 77'), Edouard* (Griffiths 77')
Unused Subs: Bain, Bitton, Ntcham, Shved

Odsonne Edouard netted a hat-trick to take his tally for the season to 7 goals in 8 appearances. The pick of the goals being a lovely wighted pass from Mikey Johnston slotted in by the left post. Just when it looked like Leigh Griffiths was staking a claim to the spot. The away leg is the last week of constant two fixtures per week so I will be able to play a more settled squad through September.

There must have been a glitch in the matrix. The match ended a bore draw. Despite us having 46 shots on goal (only 12 on target).

I'm hoping these goalless draws aren't going to become a thing. The 3-0 lead from the first leg meant I was able to rest a few key players. I plan on playing a pretty regular side throughout September to get some momentum going.

Another fixture we left it late. It looked like we were going to be falling further behind Rangers after a tricky trip to Perth. Odsonne Edouard stepped up once again to claim the 3 points. A lovely goal from a Marian Shved through ball.

Well, what a result. We sent Ronaldo and his boys packing. Odsonne Edouard stole the show with a double sealing the game in injury time before Douglas Costa got a late conciliation. Fortress Parkhead could be back.

Accies gave us an easy scare but we hit back immediately and went on to win the match comfortably and stop that 2 point gap expanding. It is quite satisfying that we now have 11 different goal scorers from 20 outfield players who have played for the first team.

A 6th win on the bounce to complete a perfect month. Leigh Griffiths got his goal against the Jambos. I'm sure he would have loved that. Hibs also held Rangers to a draw meaning we go level on points. Our next league match is at Ibrox in the battle for top spot.

We really chucked this match away just before the break. Quickfire goals from Madrid killed the tie off. They were simply just too good. I went into the tie with optimism because of the Juve result but that was short lived. We still sit 2nd in the group despite Juve beating Lille 7-1.

I decided to do some rotation and play some of the fringe players as we've a big game against Lille coming up. I also want to get them some game time and in the eye of potential suitors. We struggled but got the goal in the end despite dominating the match. James Forrest pounced on a rebound to maintain the gap at the top.

This was a big win for us. It puts us in a great position after 3 games to at lease drop into the Europa League. It is very tight with Juve, Madrid and ourselves all on 6 points.

Things go off to a bad start but we got a stroke of luck in the 2nd half when Odsonne Edouard was brought down in the box by a Livingston defender. He converted the penalty to level the match. Just as we looked to be turning it around Christopher Jullien got a second yellow and sent for an early shower. I shored things up to play for the draw but Scottish Premiership top goal scorer Leigh Griffiths' winner was enough to secure the 3 points. Rangers fell further behind with a draw at home to Aberdeen taking the gap to 5 points.

Go away Roy. I'm hoping to get a new deal signed in the next few weeks.

I rested a lot the squad here as we have two very important games coming up. Hibs in the League Cup Semi Final and the return leg vs Lille. It was a tight game but we managed to get all three points.

I rotated quite heavily here due to playing strong sides for the Semi Final and UCL. We still managed to win convincingly Johnny Hayes came on off the bench to as a winger instead of wing back and scored a brace. We'll see what he can do from there the next few matches. We have opened up or gap at the top to 10 points.

Livingston sit at the foot of the table. A 2-0 loss at Pitodrie was the final nail in the coffin. They are being linked with some heavy hitters so it could be interesting.

Morton sit 9th in the Scottish Championship. I chose them over Dunfermline as they are in the play-offs and might come up voiding the agreement. I'm hoping sending a couple players there in January can help keep them up. My other option was Stenhousemuir but they are in League 2.

Jonny Hayes throws another spanner in the works. I did plan on letting him go at the end of the season but we'll see how this little run of form goes. He may be worth keeping around it will be between him and Boli Bolingoli who has actually played well too.

We missed our chance to make the Champions League last 16. A point would have done it but now e need to go into the final round of fixtures vs Real Madrid and better Juve's result against Lille who have been hopeless. It could be a blessing in disguise though as winning the CL was never realistic but a good run in the Europa League is.

I was delighted to sign up Odsonne Edouard for another two years. The main benefit being that the big spending clubs should leave me alone in January at least. He becomes our top earner with a clause that matches anyone who comes in on a higher wage. Meaning it is unlikely I will be able to sing Fraser Forster as he will demand over £70k p/w. I can't have two players on that I don't think, I shouldn't have put it in but it was a long negotiation.

It took two penalty attempts for Leigh Griffiths to get his goal and seal a 4th consecutive League Cup success. The first on a potential treble. The Quadruple Treble? It is certainly on. However up next is the real task to beat Real Madrid to have any hopes of reaching the last 16.

In the other group fixture Lille went up 1-0 after meaning we were in the second qualifying spot. We then conceded in the 23rd minute from a Luka Modric strike. I looked like Leigh Griffiths pulled one back only for it to be ruled offside by VAR in the 35th. We were unable to get that vital equaliser that would have seen us progress. Now we drop into the Europa League.

I think it might be time to give you Karamoko Dembele a run out and see what he can do. He's progressed phenomenally in the reserves. With a home fixture to Hamilton coming up off the back of the defeat to Madrid this might be the ideal time.

This was another opportunity to rest a few players and rotate the squad a bit. We just came off the back to of the League Cup Final win and a tough fixture against Real Madrid. Another massive Glasgow Derby win. Ultimately it should have been more but the FM second half curse kicked in. Odsonne Edouard's hat-trick took him to equal top of the scoring charts. Both him and Leigh Griffiths lead the way with 10 goals despite the fact we play with one up top.

2nd December 2020

Jonny Hayes picked up an injury right at the worst time. The upturn in form from Boli Bolingoli and his purple patch ending means it's unlikely he'll get much more game time and a new deal at the end of the season.

Love it, complaining about a disallowed goal after a 5-0 win lol

Really liking the style of your update, it is the sort of update that inspires me if I am going through a period where my interest drops.:)

I used to lean towards Rangers as a neutral but that was many years ago, a proper neutral now and following this, don't think you are gonna have much competition dominating the domestic comps.

Thanks! Aye domestic competition doesn't ever seem too hard, squad management is the difficult part. We play a lot of matches so balancing the squad size with that and keeping hold of your best players while trying to keep them happy is they key.
