bermybhoy
Wallace v Roberts 2009: the CSE community challenge Danny Roberts and Paul Wallace are two legendary strikers who went on to have equally legendary managerial careers, the continuing adventures of which we will follow right here. Biographies Danny Roberts scored more than 1,000 goals playing for Braintree and won a record number of international caps for England. Credit to dafuge for guiding this guy through his playing career (in FM 2006) As a manager in FM 2008 he had 17 successes including cups and promotions as he guided the Southern Softies up the leagues, culminating in 2 Premier League titles and Champions League trophy. Paul Wallace scored a record breaking number of goals in Northern Ireland for Knockbreda and drew them close to unthinkable Champions League success. NepentheZ was the man who led Wallace to this incredible scoring record (FM 2008). As a manager in FM 2008 he had 15 successes, ultimately leading the Northern Monkeys to the Premier League crown and the Champions League trophy. The story With the release of FM 2009, these two will go head to head again. Wallace is to take control of Blyth Spartans. Roberts will become manager of his former club, Braintree. Every year, both endure a traumatic change. A new member of the forum comes in and takes them over, guiding them through the next season, before they in turn are replaced, ad infinum. This of course means that everything changes. Their strategies change. Their opinions on players change. Their approaches to scouting, dealing with the press, heck, we could go on - it changes, every year. The one thing of which we can be sure, is success; eventually. With the combined - if conflicting - skills of the forum behind them, it is surely inevitable. Right here, we'll read all about it. You can read a summary of the previous incarnation (FM2008) here. Everyone who took part might want to check out the awards ceremony here. But who will be the most successful? On the one side, we have Blyth Spartans, otherwise affectionately known as the Northern Monkeys. On the other side, we have Braintree, or as they are now also known, the Southern Softies. It works like this Two distinct games will be started, one starting out in the Blue Square North (Monkeys), one in the Blue Square South (Softies). Fictional players will be used so no advantage can be gained. Various forum members who have signed up will take control of the teams, one at a time. Each participant has a week to 10 days at most to complete one season only (note this may be less during holidays, when there’s high demand). If they haven't, they will upload it for the next guy to continue from that point. When the season is effectively over (the end of May works well), the person in the hot seat must save and upload it for the next player. If Wallace or Roberts are sacked whoever is responsible has to own up to their inadequacy, and the next person takes over at that point, until the end of the NEXT season. Players must read and stick to the rules set out below.
bermybhoy
Rules for playing the game When it’s your turn: Each player will control the club for a maximum of one season at a time. Your season should be completed within 7 - 10 days, but everyone is encouraged to be as quick as they can. This thread thrives on momentum. You must use compressed saving. This reduces the size of the file, hence upload/download times and ensures no-one can use nasty external scouting utilities. Please use auto save. It’s disappointing when people lose their game and have to replay or give up. You must be using the latest available patch. Everyone has other commitments. If you feel you can’t complete the season, please let us know so we can work out how best to progress. When you’re finished: The game must be saved after the final game of the season, and no later than May 31. The save game file must then be uploaded for the next player (using filefront, megaupload or similar) Signing players: Each manager has a free reign over signings. However, be sensitive in regards to players that other participants have said they like, or who've been at the club a while...be courteous and engage in some conversation before making anything that looks like a big decision. To sign a player, you must be able to scout them, this doesn't mean you have to do so; just he must be accessible to your scouts. If you have a foreign player on a free transfer who is willing to come on trial, you do not need to be able to scout them. What’s considered cheating: No external utilities such as FMScout can be used. This is for fun and is meant to be tough, remember that you’re messing it up for others if you use these. Please do not exploit flaws in the game by offering out players for free if the chairman accepts a bid that you're not happy with...chairman interference is part of the game and needs to be accepted. You may of course, try to offer them to clubs for more cash if you think that's appropriate. Downloaded tactics may not be used. Each player should create their own tactics for their team. It's not meant to be easy and does of course give you greater bragging rights when you do well. Parent clubs: please do not use parent clubs. It’s been found they can provide some sides with a large advantage. You may have as many feeder clubs as you like. General stuff: If you have signed a young player or brought them through the youth academy, you may use the nickname function to give them a sensible name of your choosing. You can then ask for progress reports on such players in future seasons. Subsequent managers can sell these players as they see fit, but again as a courtesy please discuss first. Players may ask advice on new signings, tactics etc from their adoring (or spiteful, depending how they get on) public. Rules of the thread This is an interactive thread with a large number of forum members who take a keen interest in the ups and downs of both teams. Therefore if you're taking part: Report on you progress as often, and in as much detail, as you can. Screenshots of absolutely anything are encouraged. Anything you think is relevant...take a look at some of the contributions from experienced Wallace or Roberts managers for ideas...top players, best signings, league tables, results etc are all good. At the start of the season, try to provide at least the following: the board's expectations; your OWN expectations; your predictions for top scorer; club players of the year and a young player to watch. At the end of the season, provide a summary of the season, with screenshots. Also provide some feedback to the next person, with a discussion of which players to keep, sell, and potential signings. If you want to take part Just post your interest in the thread. Please mention '3IAR' so I know you've read this far at least How to Post a Screenshot While in FM, press the 'Prt Sc' button (usually next to F12 on your keyboard). Open an image editing program such as Paint and paste the image Save the file as a JPEG Upload the image to an image hosting website such as Photobucket or Imageshack Post the direct Url to the image here. bermybhoy
Order of play / the story so far (‘the list’) This will be updated frequently, so check back regularly if you’re on ‘the list’. This is very flexible. If your name's not yet down below, if you sign up you might still get a turn sooner than you think. If you're new to the thread and wonder what the heck's going on - both the Northern Monkeys in the shape of Blyth Spartans and the Southern Softies of Braintree completed Premier League and Champions League doubles (after a mere 24 seasons). It was therefore decided to start over from the very beginning...we're therefore following Paul Wallace at Rugby (aka the Northern Monkeys or the Egg-chasers) and Danny Wallace at Mangotsfield (aka the Southern Softies) from season 2032/33. blowcrapup
Nice to finally see this ready to start. Just to clarife it what do you mean by bringing a player through the youth system? Is it for example after paul passes the save onto me and I like the look of a youth player I can name him or would he belong to Paul (if he wanted him) as it was his year when the player came through or me as he came through on my turn? bermybhoy
Suppose it's up to yourself, but I'd have thought someone who wasn't at the club when you took over - remember that the new regens will come through shortly after you take over. robbo3d
I followed this last year and really wished I had the time to commit to it. I'd love to take charge in this one if I feel I have the time (3IAR), though I wont be getting the game til the new year. I'd prefer to be a Northern Monkey but not fussed really. Even if I dont get chance to have a go, I'll be following. Good luck all!

Guest roberto922
I look forward to this, it'll be good to be in from the start and will help me get into it more, I felt like I was party-crashing last time and didn't really get into it that much like others did (eg. the mutual love of The Hox whilst I just saw him as a decent back up that was getting on a bit.) 31AR

Benjaminoo
C'mon the Softies I might not be available (depending when it's my turn) to complete a season in 7-10 from about the 8th of December 'til the 17th'ish. I have exams in that period, but if it's before or after then it should be fine.

Robert_296
Danny Roberts Rejoins Beloved Braintree So after a brilliant career as a player going right the way to the top with Legends FC, Danny Roberts turned to management. He took over Legends FC and in 17 season he proved he was as good a manager as he was a player. In his time there he won the premiership not once but twice, the champions league, the uefa cup, the european super cup, the league cup four times and several other lower league trophies. He will go down in Legends folklore as, rather fittingly, a legend! The whole country was shocked today as Danny Roberts resigned as Legends manager and took over the job at blue square north club Braintree where he made his career in the sport. He told the press, "I am delighted to come back here to where I consider my home. I have proved myself with the Legends and hope I can do what I did with them with Braintree." He has certainely set his sights high and who can blame one of the best players and managers to grace English football in recent years. Former manager of Braintree and mentor of Roberts, dafuge said, "I am so happy that Braintree's best ever player has come home. I am sure he can recreate the success he has had in the past and win lots of trophies with the club." It will be a difficult task but I wouldn't put anything past Mr. Roberts and he will surely do much better than his teams greatest rivals Blyth Spartans who have now appointed Paul Wallace who was also previously a star striker and even better manager. Robert_296
First Impressions Goalkeepers I am not impressed at all with the two goalkeepers, Barry Goodwin and Gavin Milne. I will be lucky ot get any money at all and I will be looking to sign a couple of good quality keepers. Defenders Our right backs, Steve Charles, Wayne Hubbarb and Chris Parkinson are, quite frankly, awful and I will be looking ot sign some new players there, however John O'Brien can do a job there if needs be. Ken Meade and Damien Schmidt are alright at left back and I don't think, for this season at least we will need any improvement. All of our centre backs, Matthew Costello, Matthew Mortimer and Mick Ramage are at different stages, Matthew Costello with be sold at the earliest oppurtunity, Matthew Mortimer will be a first teamer and Mick Ramage will be one for the future assuming we don't go too far quickly. I will however be trying to bring in an experianced centre back to play this season. Midfielders Where our defence isn't very good our midfied is definitely up to scratch. Both our right wingers can do a job, Ian Pearson and James Capstick. I guess the left wing could do with having some real quality brought in as Tom Brown is only a decent player and the young Graham Knight has the potential to be a quality player, James Capstick can also play there if needs be. John O'Brien, Nick Griffiths, Mick Carty and Martin Henry can all do a job although they might not be good enough for the next level up. Strikers The "worst striker in English football" is no longer Ade Akinbiyi! Ashley Mitchell is much worse, he is quite good physically but apart from that my Nan is a better player as I was bombarded with 1's. Ross Winn is a slight improvement although I still think he will be sold off. Leaving James Capstick and Tom Brown, however I will try to sign a couple of strikers. I was thinking on using a 4-4-2 but if I don't get the right players I may have to use 4-3-3. Any opinions on the squad, possibly formations, anything are welcome. Oh and I like the way you put the Southern Softies in pink in the opening post
Jonfun1980
I would like to see Ashley Mitchell given a run out in a friendly, I have a good feeling about him. Looks like you will have to do a lot of work to lay the foundations for the team for the rest of us. I think you should try out both formations. bermybhoy
Yes - please play him. A LOT Looks like he couldn't finish his breakfast. Braintree must be a nice location, judging by the badge... Looking forward to Paul getting started
LiRiM-InSaNe
Wow. Very promising squad we have to work with here lads. Is it okay with the rest of the softies if I go either 5th. 6th or 7th? One or the other
Lower Leagues Rule
I would also suggest trying both formations in friendlies to see what happens, as for the players I say spend some time looking through free transfers, there must be someone out there that we can work with Lets get on building that Softies Squad Any promising Youth other than the ones mentioned? PaulHartman71
First Impressions Players branded *Youth* are players that were first in the U18 side. Squad I have only provided screenshots of players not branded 1* Jon Sayer - DRC Iain Porter - DRC/MC Graeme Pepper - DL Terry Buchanan - DC Stephen Stokes - DC Paul Storer - DC Danny Macauley - D/WB R/MRC Sam Brunskill - MC Andre McLeod - AMRC Ryan Clements - AMRL/ST Mark Hutton - ST Karl Nash - ST Phil Russell - ST I am looking to find players, but will have to wait until I sign a scout. However the 'Trialists Friendlies' are coming up shortly, so hopefully we will be able to sign a few players from there, if they are good enough. Any thoughts and suggestions are welcome EDIT: Links should be sorted now

I'm linked to my own photobucket account from the squad pic and the first 2 player pics both take me to the squad list. With regards to the squal list though, loving the pa stars for both Pepper & Nash.
