FM17 tactics

Recommended Posts

So, I am not sure I will be able to continue playing FM 2021 so I have purchased FM 2017 again, since a lot you are saying that is the best ME.

I remember not liking that FM because I simply could not win there no matter what I've tried, even with Knap tactics, so, since so many of you guys like that version, can someone please tell me - what tactics to use in that FM for success? I just want to relax and mainly focus on transfers, even plug and play would work for me. ( just please no - strikerless)

Thank you

I'm still playing FM17 and just restart at times and try a different philosophy.  Since FM2019 my old graphics card and old graphics drivers don't seem to like FM and as soon as I upgrade drivers the whole thing just stops working so I stay on 17 until one day I can afford a new PC!

Since 2017 I use my SH IWB A which was a Knap Tactic but I withdrew a striker to the DM position,.  I won quite a few titles over the years with that, but struggled against big teams away, certainly first few seasons so in my latest save I stumbled across what I call the SH WHU 41311 which has done quite well for me with just yesterday a 5-0 away win at Chelsea.  Seems to do quite well against formations that don't use a DM.  The last one is SH DLP 2020 which is just a swap over of the strikers really but can be useful if the SH IWB isn't working.  Defensive Experiment is purely the main tactic but with "close down much less" on the full backs.  Sometimes use that to try and see a game out.  The one tactic I cannot seem to find is one for those games when you are behind and the other team are so stubborn and the keeper is so good you just can't break them down,.  Let me if you find one!!  :)

One thing I will say is these don't guarantee wins but I haven't changed from the SHWBA since 2017.  Much prefer FM17, especially Touch which I play.  It's not perfect but it's simple and you can concentrate on squad building and playing.  Only downside as a West Ham fan is that there is no Declan Rice in the squad and Soucek and Coufal aren't that great!

All these are based very much on Knap's original settings for one of his 433's.

For the OP again.  Been trying to come up with something for away games against the big clubs since 2017 and in my latest save I might have stumbled across something I thought I would share.  Still based on the 4132 but a few changes in PI's and TI's with closing down reduced and change in mentality.  Early days but doing quite well.  I don't change to the defensive/contain unless I am at least two goals ahead.  The Attack one is if I need a goal.
