Boston United Season 4

Now this was a lot closer and I suspect next season in the championship we won't be winning the league again but we still did really well. Every season that goes by we become a bigger underdog then the season before. Our budget is so small compared to the other teams and it gets worse in comparison every year!

Great stuff. Still going strong in my my fourth season with Barca but I love that it's also possible to use this tactic in the lower leagues without having world class players. I think I'm going to start a journeyman game with this as my main tactic after my 4th Barca season is done.

Next up should be how to get the defending part a tad better without sacrificing too much in attack.

There is two things I like to do when I'm under pressure defensively. One is to set one of the IWB-A to support, usually the side I see my opponents having a go at me. Sometimes it's differently though and both their wingers drop deep and instead they have marauding WBs driving their wide play forward, what I tend to do in these cases is drop my AML/R into ML/R slots. Doesn't always help but usually it does. Another tweak I found useful, if you encounter an opponent that just sits super deep and tries to hit you on the counter, lower your mentality, I switch to balanced or cautious. This usually prevents my team from running into too many of these situations.

Mate this is absolutely brilliant congratulations and thank you for all your analysis and sharing it on this thread. This is exactly what I wanted it to be for and for everyone inspired to try and play this football on Football Manager, to share their attempts and success and we're all better for it.

I'm not too familiar with your team and leagues you've been playing in, but I'm assuming with your promotions you've been a heavy underdog in your last 3 seasons and you've still been able to be promoted? How many teams go up automatically in your leagues etc in your previous seasons?

Yeah defnintely about having that third extra player back and when seeing out the game with a 1 score lead, I've resorted to making that pivot player a CB and keeping everything else the same as my current way to do it, as changing formations seemed to swing the momentum too much to the other team and I found myself conceding a lot. I'm also a heavy underdog over performing with a squad not built to defend deep in our own box so that's part of it too!

I started in the 5th tier, which is a regional semi-professional league, as a mid-table side.  A British equivalent might be something like the 7th tier -- it felt quite similar to managing in the Southern Football  League South Division.  I didn't turn professional until the jump up to Ligue 2, the second tier of French football.  Only one team is promoted from the 5th tier, and I lost out to PSG's reserves in my first season.  After that I've been favored for relegation each season.  One team is promoted from the 4th tier.  Two teams are promoted from the 3rd tier, with a third having a playoff against the final relegated team from Ligue 2.  So twice I've had to be champion to go up.  In terms of wage spend, I think I've been close to the bottom the whole way and at the bottom the last two seasons.  Wage spend has gone up to about £1.2m/year as I've turned professional, nearly one-third of the next-lowest team in Ligue 2.  And unsurprisingly, this has been a pretty hard season as a result.  I may go up, but it'll require sneaking through an unfavorable playoff.

Made a short video about a game that highlights how amazingly well @Cult of Football Manager Guardiola-Style 4-3-3 tactic replicates the Guardiola style football. Super Copa semi final against Atletico who played a 4-4-2 that night.

Btw Gavi is a beast as Mezzala on attack, he actually eclipses Pedri who attributes wise I would say is the better player but when it comes to the football on the pitch Gavi is this season hands down the better player.

  Hi,

I love your statistics and I noticed you scored a lot of goals which is the objective, but also you conceded a lot. I've also been working to improve that part of the tactic, as when I'm on top I want to have best attack and defense.

I am trying to improve that aspect of your tactic without loosing focus on the attacking part. I've tightened it so far, not playing that wide because the assists now come from the wings because of the width. For me that is a setting that should be listed as depending on the other team. I am doing around 1200 passes per match, I like that, controlling possession like crazy, but due to that amount of passes I feel like the ball is being passed without clear intention most of the time.  I like the way the pressure triggers are being implemented, and the pressuring is on point, but I really have to find a way to improve the tactic defensively, mainly against bigger teams, but continuing to be as bold as Pep (using 3 attacking minded midfielders on a Champions League final reveals to me how he is. But I've seen a lot of interviews, his intent every season is also to have the best defense.

I am managing Benfica, and in terms of results, for the D1 everything is running fine (except against Porto and Sporting, teams that have better players than Benfica (selected no transfers on the first window transfer).

Feel free to reach to me to see how we can improve the tactic to play against bigger teams, we might need 2 different tactics doing the same thing but one with a bigger emphasis on Defense  without loosing the control of the ball and possession and trying to recover the ball very high.

I know that you are a professional coach, you have more knowledge than me, but I've been trying to study as much as I can from Pep because he's my very first real true idol in Football  (i'm 40 years old). I loved a lot of football players but never reached the stage of really admiring someone (and also hoping that Xavi will reach the same level) because Positional Play is for me the best thing there is in this world tactically speaking.

What kind of opponent instructions do you use in order be able to counter the opposition attack ?

Please check the results of the current season ? (except the Champions League group phase playing against Bayern, Barcelona and Milan was not really lucky using the original Benfica team, when in RL Otamendi is a beast, in-game 70% of the goals are due to lack of concentration from Otamendi.

I've been using your tactics since 2021 and trying to refine it even more while maintaining the principles of Pep's City, trying to play exactly like City.

I feel they really improved on this last patch the AI, and I noticed that the game became a bit more difficult. Also a good useful thing to add to this tactic in my opinion would be adding an appropriate training program that meets all the requirements (even though should also be dynamic depending on your performances.

I hope we could work together on this.

Thank you

Up to Ligue 1, but a frustrating, frustrating season so far.  Seven penalties, 37 yellow cards and 5 red cards in 9 matches despite having Get Stuck In removed.  No wonder I'm pretty close to the bottom of the table with a -14 goal difference.

Mitigating factors are that I haven't had a single game yet where I'd be favored -- PSG, OM and Bordeaux at home plus Lens in a game where I got two red cards, and five away matches.  LOSC, Monaco and OL at home coming up.  Hopefully what that means is that I can pick up enough points to stay safe in 2027, when I get to play all the home games against mid-table or lower teams.

I've also had a takeover, which is incredibly frustrating.  The new board won't upgrade any facility because they want me to buy first-team players in the transfer market, but they also won't increase any of the budgets.

Ah, typical board behavior. "Buy players!!!" "Well, gimme money." "Only buy, no spend!!!"

"Just sell some of your existing players!"  Dudes, I am still using players on month-to-month contracts.  I can't sell them.  "Oh, well in that case we'll agree to increase the percentage of transfer revenue you retain!  You can sell your youth players!"  EXCEPT I CAN'T BECAUSE THEY'RE AWFUL BECAUSE YOU WON'T UPGRADE THE FACILITIES.

Looks like my Pep tactic for FM21 was a better FM21 tactic then this Pep tactic on FM22!

Looks like I'm going to spend a 3rd season in the Championship ( took me only 2 on FM21 )

Ridiculous amounts of money to spend way less then on FM 21, Ridiculously less available players to sign even remotely good enough for the level willing to come to me and a ridiculous amount of injuries / suspensions.

My experience in Ligue 1 has been that I can't play most matches on positive.  I just haven't got the defensive horses.  My wage spend is about what yours is in the previous screenshot, and the top-end wage spend in my division is very nearly one hundred times what I have available.  I spend £2.68m/year; PSG spend £242m/year.

I've ticked the mentality down to balanced for most games and taken off Get Stuck In (as you said, I just started picking up an insane number of suspensions once I got into Ligue 2).  It helps keep games a little closer; I've stolen a win or two, and I'm less likely to take huge hits to morale after 3-0s.

Money is definitely a problem in 22 so far.

Not it's the new game engine, we have to take a closer look at it and tweak it the best we can in order for it to function. I'll do what I can on my side and then share my thoughts. Defensively, with that higher line of pressure if you don't have Central defenders with good acceleration, pace and anticipation you are going to get a lot of goals.

I mean in my case for the Portuguese competitions it's more than enough for a team like Benfica with the default team and no signings. However when you go into Champions league against very strong teams, I suffer a lot of goals.  With last years version, you would lose the match anyway, but would not concede that many goals. I tried to push slightly down the defensive line to very high to high, keeping max pressure on top and the forwards were pressing lower (new pressing system is a lot more difficult to find the correct balance). I also know that one of the biggest Benfica faults is that everyone thinks we have super-players all over the team, but some very few are good to the level of Benfica, Vçlachodimos, Lucas Verissimo, Otamendi, Weigl, Darwin Nunez, Rafa, that's it, then you have excellent kids in the Academy that will be great players. For you to properly manage Benfica you would have to sell around 18 players from the main squad, use that money to buy young gems. but that's another topic not at all related to what is being discussed here.

On the CL on 6 matches I lost 5 (won at home the match against Bayern 3-2) and loosing all others 3-2, except the Milan away match in which I conceded 6, but I played with subs only. I was not going to pass anyway, so let the young kids play.

Like said in a previous post, I tried to change some things based on your FM21 tactic.

1. Reduce defense line

2. I feel the midfield is empty with no passing options because quite some times, the 2 mezzalas stay way wider than they should, will try other roles to see if I can make a change, I have an idea but I want to explore it first, but then you would only play on that side, very nice to consider

3. Using 2 FB as IWB(A) leaves you one less person staying a bit more behind helping the 2 CDs and the DPL(s) when there is a quick counter from the opponent (like you did last years)

4. I feel the trigger for the Inverted Wingers to get inside the area are slightly different since the new patch, they stay out too long, the constant switch between IW, FB and Mezzala that used to happen, doesn't happen that often anymore. You will see that 90% of the time, the IW will stay wide in the final third when in reality that is not what happens.

So I'm trying to find alternatives to it to see if it works like it should. Will get back to you with updates and screenshot to see what can be done to improve the tactic

Hello guys, can it be that the Man City team without transfers in the first season is very bad in the match engine? I have played and holidayed the first season so much now, it is nearly impossible to get close to the 90+ points Liverpool gets. With this tactic here and some change to IWB S and FB S as I don't like MEZ and IWB drinking coffee together standing on the same spot so often you can smash most bad teams besides Southampton with good football, 800-900 passes, but against the good teams away you get smacked regularly. I tweaked to some 4-1-4-1 now and when instant resulting yes you could see some game at Old Trafford with 1000 passes but then I holidayed the season and still got smacked in Anfield and the like. It feels like you need to have someone physically good in midfield in the match engine and no matter who you play there just isn't that, neither Ferna nor Rodri nor KDB or whoever. Adding to that you only have like 3 good jumpers on the pitch so you have some guy with 10 JR standing in the last line on corners so Van Dijk and Ronaldo always score from them pretty much every game. Yes I know you can maybe play 2DM and Counter, but I don't want to throw the principles into the trashcan for these. So can I really only win the league activating transfers and buying some Ndidi like guy?

Also what I want to add, playing Grealish, Foden, Sterling as "striker" and Jesus on the wing like in real life completely sucks in the game, if you put Jesus RW and Grealish ST you get no highlights on extended then you switch them around you smash the opponent with same tactic?

@MrWongl

I dont think your posts are totally true.

Ive been managing Real Madrid and had chance to progress my save a little this weekend. Still very early days, but im liking the progress im making. Im using this as my "template" but its flexible and can change within games:

479180081_Screenshot2021-12-19at18_09_33.thumb.png.e377e1c8538611f3f65afc4d6d1e0328.png

So in this tactic, the back 3 are formed by Nacho, Vallejo/Militao and Kroos with the PPM to come deep.

I use PF/S for the striker because the decription suggests he takes more risks in possession, yet crucially for me he does NOT move into the channels, so thats idea as he can form the middle of the front 5 for me.

What I like is the flexibility. Ok it might not be pure pep, but it works nicely for me.

From this basic set up, I can change the formation mid game and make it a genuine 3-2-5 by dropping the DM into a half back role and pushing one of the wingbacks forward to join the forward 5.

If i want to set up a "high press" 5 with a genuine back 3 I can.... by dropping the DM into Half back, getting both the AML and AMR positions to stay wider and hold position to open up the half spaces for the two central midfielders, and then use the wing backs as inverted wingbacks to make the midfield 2.

If we are overrun in midfield, i can switch to a 2-3-5 by using the DM as a DM/s to come to sit in the middle, and make the other two positions the narrow sitting wingbacks.

I can also turn the formation into a solid 4-1-4-1 shape with an AF/A to play direct balls over the top/through balls.

Have to say its working nicely, both defensively and offensively:

1012 Passes attempted away to Atletico, 963 completed. A low xg, but control of the game.

Its left us in a lovely position in the league, and qualified for the champions league knockout stages:

Like i say, its not total Pep, but there are Pep elements to it, and id say my squad is similar to Man City's in terms of lack of physicality and jumping.

Its a computer game after all, we are limited to what we can do. We can never get exact replicas of tactics and I dont know what an exact replica could ever be as tactics change so much, opponent and situation depending.

You say my post is not true but say nothing about my post? Are you a troll or what? I am saying what I experienced from playing first season ManCity about 20 times. So dont come with a Real Madrid team in farmers league la liga with example home game against Milan (trash team) and away to Atletico who play weird formation 5-4-1 and are 18th in your season, and tell me my post is not true? Show me game at Anfield and Old Trafford with no Casemiro and Kroos or dont say my post is not true? Also you buy some player like Mohamed Salah? I can buy Mbappe and Ndidi too, doesnt make my post untrue, rather proofs it. Makes me really mad you spend so much time on testing and trying everything and then this is what you get.

Probably use in game editor and give City someone like Kante, Ndidi and youll see that it is true what I say. Also I know I can win better with City play 4-2-2-2 or 4-2-3-1 DM/CM and counter attack them, but I said multiple times in the post I don't want to put principles into the trashcan.

I think it's rather rude to dismiss hours of meticulous research and testing by saying it's not true - because I say it's not true. So I doubt you should talk big stuff in that regard. So go on. Congrats buying Salah and smacking bad teams with Real Madrid.

No that cannot be true. They have one of the strongest squads in the game. Far from impossible to achieve 90+ points in the first season. Also, I don’t understand why the need to holiday a year over and over again? Why not just play the season out yourself instead of getting mad when people disagree with you?

I think I have made it very clear what the issue is. Not that the team can't overpower bad teams with these players but that you get smacked away by the top teams with this playstyle. You can see on the Cult Of FM channel on YT as well how he gets smacked by Real. I am studying and researching what I can do to win these games while roughly keeping the principles. I can get 95 points easy by putting in 2DMs and playing for the counter but that's not what this and this thread are about. I don't ask you why you feel the need to reload games until you won the title and get internet likes for it as well, so please let me study and research the match engine, it's honest at least. I have played the season about 7 times now and holidayed twice btw and reloaded some games like United and Liverpool Away to test tactics. So you are not even correct on what you wanna say. Also nobody disagreed with me, it was just a nonsensical comment.

Your comment is proven wrong as well by the AI, you can see on the Newcastle save that they are 5th so even without his OP Newcastle in there it's barely 4th. In 95% of the saves I have on my laptop here they are 3rd or 4th with 75-80 points as well, with 6-8 losses mostly to United, Liverpool and teams like Everton, Spurs, Leicester away, so AI Pep with his tactic has the same issue I am trying to fix here with this Pep replication. The one where I saw them win the title first season with 85 points was one where I didn't disable transfers and they went and got midfield BEASTS SMS and Renato Sanches. Exactly my point.

Not interested going back and forth with you. You’re getting angry and defensive over a computer game. Sort yourself out.

Lol you have zero argument, well done. You're rather projecting getting defensive as not everybody falls for your reloading scam for compliments. I am just stating facts regarding the PEP GUARDIOLA TACTIC like this topic suggests, so if you have no argument at all, just shut it and don't feel smart with your degrading comment.

No one knows what a "Pep Guardiola Tactic" is, because we are not Pep.

We can take some visible elements we see, and try and include them into our game tactics.

What are you coming on this thread to do? you sound like you were winning matches with your "non Pep" tactic, and you didnt like it. You then steadfastly tried to implement a "Pep tactic" and you started losing, so you didnt like that either. You then take other people, like myself, who are winning matches with their team, in my case Real, and other posters who play the game as they see fit, and again, you dont like it and criticise them.

Do yourself a favour, and grow up. Stop embarrasing yourself.

Not everyone defines their worth as a person over a COMPUTER GAME and not everyone feels they need to incorporate every little element of someones style into a computer game or win the champions league with Carlisle United to enjoy the said COMPUTER GAME either.

It must make you so mad I can win with Barnsley but you can’t with an overpowered squad like city huh? My suggestion is to turn off your computer, go breathe some air and get a life.

Or don’t, I couldn’t care less. I’m not going to argue with a clown.

Lads don't worry about it i'll get a mod to come and clean this up. You're not going to gain anything out of that conversation and may only risk yourself getting in trouble.

I can't upload at the moment for a reason I'm hoping to share with you all soon. It's great to see people still having so much success with their own versions too!

As for getting smacked by real, the last episode that I recorded for the Barca tactic that I haven't uploaded yet we beat Real 4-0 away with Pedri, Gavi & Nico as a midfield 3!

I do have thoughts on why it's harder to implement this style of football on FM in England than in other countries I think I spoke about it a fair few pages back, Hopefully I'll be able to post properly again soon!

Could also be Gdansk's evil twin. MrWongll seems like even less of a friendly and polite chap than Gdansk was.

Well if he's right and banning people on a chat forum is "illegal" I'd say  @FrazT and @Wolf_pd are getting this right about now:

I have used 4-3-3PepRecreation433TheCultofFM as an inspiration and basis of my current tactic with Monaco which I've used for the last two seasons. Last season [2027_28] 's final table was:

2062109167_Finaltable.png.552616b83ca4b172e169b0494a45c07b.png

Our average possession and pass completion ratios were:

1052484321_PassCompletion.png.18a2f30c9c39296ab869a9e39f88417b.png

We also won the two domestic cups but were beaten by Liverpool in the semi final of the Champions League.

This is how the tactic turned out:

PIs are:

AF: Close Down More, Tackle Harder and Mark Tighter;

Both IWs: Close Down More, Tackle Harder, Mark Tighter, Take More Risks and Stay Wider;

Both Mezs: Close Down More, Tackle Harder, Mark Tighter and Dribble Less;

DL: Dribble Less

So many thanks to @Cult of Football Manager for giving me the vast majority of what's turned out to be the most enjoyable tactic I've used on FM
