Unmarked opponents at set peices (indirect wide)

Recommended Posts

Could anyone help with addressing situations below please? The opposition constantly have a free man inside the area, despite me allocating several players to man mark. I have tried a range of set ups, but its happened at least half a dozen times in my current season and is ruining the save. Cheers.

I am not an expert in set pieces, although I don't struggle with them either (for the most part). But when it comes specifically to man marking, you need to know that telling a player to man-mark an opponent does not mean he will execute the task successfully. Simply because not every player is good at marking. And this applies to any other tactical instruction. I mean, you can instruct players to do something, but they may not be capable of doing that (because they don't have the right set of relevant attributes).

I personally never use man marking for set piece situations (even if I have players who are good at marking).

Btw, Rashidi has a video specifically on defensive set pieces, so you can check it out on his YouTube channel "Bust the net".

Indeed. I have watched every video and stream of his for quite a few years now. I base a lot of my systems on his advice.

If my players were getting out jumped / muscled, at least I would understand the issue. I could also take it on the chin if superior off the ball movement caught one of my players napping.

What I can’t accept is when nobody is within 10 yards of the goal scorer.

Following, that happens to me too (albeit rarely) and I agree with this:

No professional footballer has ever been bad enough to not understand the danger of such situations as the ones screenshot in the original post.

I'm also having problems with set piece lately specially attacking corners which is constantly changing in different positions in default i think? and for long throw in the positioning is not being followed.. I haven't scored a set piece since the last update I suppose? I just noticed it recently, is it because of the new match engine or what? I hope this gets fix soon!

Yeah tell me about it. I spend 5-10 mintues before very game to carefully craft the positioning of each player for set pieces (for example, because I'm using a subsitute who's much better physically than the regular starter and I want to make sure he's upfront etc.).
And sometimes, they're all over the place. A bit frustrating.

can you try to tick the boxes in your set piece, like click the position and you can see on your lower right there is a box there and see if anything changes?

Every box is ticked, because every player is given specific instructions. And they generally work - but sometimes, I just so happen to see a corner kick and have my 17 Strength CB roaming far from position and I end up conceding a goal on the far post - the one he was set to protect.

try saving routines for your set piece? save a bit of time

I can't do that because the way I set them is entirely dependent on my starting eleven, which is almost never exactly the same. That's because playing all my regular starters at once would also make them tired all at once, so I'm always rotating a little bit, except in the final stages of UCL.

This means that, say, I could place my Mezzala near the post I want to attack with a set piece, but if then he gets subbed with a weaker and shorter player, than I'll put my DM there, and so on

Agree with the OP. I also concede 2-3 goals a season like this (and it would be probably more if I was in a higher league). There is an option to prevent short GK distribution, so I don't understand why a similar option isnt available for setpieces. I have players on the edge of the box, yet nobody is there. If players don't follow your instructions (no matter which level they are at, and its not  that you ask them to do pirlo split passes in this case), then it's pointless to have a tactic/routine

What option regarding set-piece situations could be similar to the Prevent GKD TI? Could you elaborate a bit more on that point?

If that's true, you can report the problem in the Bugs forum.

Reported 6 months ago, nothing has changed.

I am not in charge of the Bugs forum and have no idea if that actually is a bug or not. If there has been no response to your report in 6 months, I can only assume that people dealing with bug reports do not regard that as a bug.

Im aware you have nothing to do with the bug forum.

I would say looking at these images there is something not right.

To be fair, I've been playing since late December and I've never seen anything that bad. I've seen plenty of situations like that, but something that infuriating would've had me crying in pain lol

Is it possible that maybe they did fix it, to an extent?

I would say no because I've seen it happen multiple times today let alone in the last couple of months. Thing is, I've tested different set ups throughout the past 6 months and nothing stops it from happening. Some friends of mine said they hadn't actually noticed it until I showed them, now they notice it all the time.

This used to do my head in, but I've found an acceptable set up that appears to reduce the regularity of it if nothing else.

It appears to be caused by players set to man marking marking players that are being picked up by the zonal markers.

The set up I use is:

Three zonal, marking near; centre; and far.

Three set to back - these will be the players to mark the space/men in the box.

Two set to edge of area

One in wall

One staying forward.

This set up is quite aggressive, but I also found only having one in the wall and two on the edge of the area stopped the short free-kick shot goals that I was also conceding from wide free kicks. It has the added benefit of having potentially four players ready for a counter attack.

Hope this helps, not saying this is a perfect set up, but works well enough for me!

This makes sense. There is definitely an issue with man markers picking up the same players as zonal markers.

The entire logic behind set pieces needs and overhaul in my view. It isn’t intuitive enough. When I attend matches, I often hear the players sorting out who is picking up who, and even switching who they mark.

I also despise how players seem locked in to their starting positions for too long after the set piece is taken.

A prime example is the two players that hold hands when set to the edge of the area, rather than take up sensible positions that cover space efficiently.

This drives me mad! I need two to cover and they stand right next to each other instead of spreading out.

Very much a problem on offensive corners as well. I set two players out of the box to pick up the rebounds, and they just hug each other leaving an open area for opposition's edge-of-the-box players to pick up the ball and run into.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have different groups of set pieces:  basic, aggro and safe.  If I have a late lead, I go to 'safe' and, defending, I have everyone zone marking, man marking or lurking.  Switch the player who was 'staying forward' to man marking or guarding a post.  With a late lead, attacking, I have 4-5 staying back, including switching my CBs from attacking the post to 'stay back', and others lurking midfield and almost no one forward, to avoid counter-goals.  I'll switch to pass short because all I care about is possession. Even then, it's hard to get your DL to play way back and prevent all counters.

There should be an easy box to check which covers these late-game situations.  There is no reason that you shouldn't be able to tell your slower CBs to stay way behind any opponent.  In one game, my 'staying back' CBs were at midfield and a much-speedier striker beat them to a long-ball and almost scored an equalizer.  I did not have 'higher DL' or 'offside trap' on.

Sometimes, the ME doesn't follow my changes.  Don't know why.
