Already have player for position joining in near future

What does this actually mean? I have my DoF go try to sign a young player that looks promising, and it fails at the contract stage because of reason "already have player for position joining in the near future". Huh? Why is that relevant to the negotiation failing? This has happened on numerous occasions.

Did you or the club sign up a foreign youth who can't join until he's old enough? If so, the club prefers to use its limited funds more wisely.

This happened to me a while ago and it was, not coincidentally, the moment when I decided to reduce the DoF's duties. These days I only delegate the most minor tasks to him and use him as an extra scout.

As for why, I always assumed that the DoF is just second guessing the player's judgment when he cancels a deal like this. You can't really trust your staff to make decisions with any autonomy because they make very, very weird assumptions, like "we really don't need more than one center back do we?"

I have one foreign youth joining later, but in a completely different position (striker). However my DoF actually signed a youth striker despite this, yet the left back who plays a completely different position can't be signed because we already have a player in the position joining. I've also seen it when I don't have any future transfers arranged, so IMO actually having a future player transfer arranged has nothing to do with it.

Also isn't what the club wants irrelevant? Whats the point of being able to give your DoF transfer targets if there are going to be arbitrary decisions like this made. As long as you are keeping to your budget and the league rules for foreign players, there shouldn't be any other issues.

I know that this thread is quite antique---which makes things even worse---but how is there still the same DoF gibberish in the game?

I want to sign 2 centre-backs for next season via my DoF, but the only thing he comes up with after I signed the first is "Already have player for position joining in near future". This is horrible, since the only workaround I can think of is to sign the other player "manually".

Sadly the same thing happens in FM24.
