If you exclude friendlies how does it look?

19 goals in friendlies.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_international_goals_scored_by_Cristiano_Ronaldo

Hattrick against spain, 3 goals against Holland, penalty against Germany, 2 penalties against France and 2 goals against Belgium in 2008 are his only goals in official matches against top nations.

Wouldn't call Belgium top in 2008.

You can try and downplay it all you like, the guy is just an absolute goal scoring machine. Not my favourite player by any means but I’ve probably got the most admiration for him out of any player just for his pure single mindedness and determination to get on the score sheet by any means possible and inevitably, he does.

Greatest goalscorer of all time.

What we saying here? Ronaldo is a fraud?

I'm not, it's just both him and most other goalscorers have way worse goals per game ratio against top teams than they do for their clubs.

Him and Messi are obviously two best players of this generation. If you look at their club record, even against the best teams in CL and especially in those Classicos they played, it's amazing. Out of this world.

But then you look at their record in knockout phase of WC, EURO and Copa, it's really disappointing.
How come that players who had more than 1 goal per game at their peak pretty much can't score in the knockouts if we don't count penalties.

I already mentioned Messi's abysmal record in knockout stages of WC/Copa where he has 1 relevant goal in 15 years in the knockouts.

Cristiano's knockout phase goals: 2004 against Netherlands, 2012 against Czechs, 2016 against Wales.

9 big competitions, 16 knockout games played and 3 goals. 0.1875 goals per game.

What does that tell us?
For me personally, it tells us that every other position on the team is underappreciated.

Especially considering the usage rate those two had. Near the end of last season, Cristiano had like 5 times more shots taken than Morata, player with second most shots on the team.
Ofc he'll be the top scorer when the entire team just keeps looking at him and he takes at least 3 low percentage shots from impossible positions every single game.

We talked about this already, but to me it's a joke that people think someone like Batistuta or Ronaldo wouldn't be bagging 40 per season on that ridiculously stacked Real team.
Goalscoring stats for top players are inflated because there's way more games now and leagues are way more top heavy, with not a single weak link for top teams, unlike 20+ years ago.

Again, they're the best players of this generation, but their NT record shows that team is still the most important thing.
Spain winning everything without Messi, while he didn't do anything in 3 straight finals.

Yeah, I respect his work ethic and borderline unhealthy mentality.
But he declined drastically over the past 3 or so years, not even close to the same player he was.

There was a graphic that came up on the football last night and post 30 he's actually scoring at about a 0.20 higher clip than he was pre 30s. The guy is a freak.

He’s 36 tbf. His goal against Germany where he won a defensive header then sprinted the entire length of the pitch so he could get on the end of a tap in is a goal I doubt you’ll see many other 36 year olds score.

Yeah, that was amazing. It's that dribbling completely fell off a cliff.
It's not like he's slow, idk what happened, but he just looks like he lost all his dribbling flair.

I think it was pretty clearly a conscious decision on his part to change his game. You could debate the reasons for the change but I don’t think it was physical and he still has the technical ability to do what he likes with a football.

Personally, I think it had a lot to do with Messi. I think Ronaldo decided a long time ago that his best chance of coming out on top in the Messi/Ronaldo debate was to outscore him (and everyone else) and that he was going to adapt his game to make sure that he was going to be on the end of near enough every single chance that his teams created and when you look at his record, you can’t really knock it.

Think he just decided scoring goals was more satisfying than a step over. United probably get a bit of credit there for kicking that out of him on the training pitch but tbh Ronaldo’s so good and single minded he’d have come around to it either way.

Sometimes I regret not getting to witness legendary players like Maradona, Pele, Eusebio, Cruyff etc., but then I think about some of the players I have been able to watch semi-regularly: I used to watch every big game in Spanish football, and seeing Ronaldo and Messi each week in Spain was a true blessing. Then you have guys like Modric, Xavi, and Iniesta. Italian football has seen more than its fair share of legendary players over the past few decades. English and German football has had some wonderful performers too. Robert Lewandowski will go down as one of the Bundesliga's greatest strikers. The guy has been a goal machine for a while now. Sergio Aguero another one who has placed himself in the history books. That's not to speak of the likes of Bergkamp, Henry, Scholes, Gerrard etc, from a few years back.

People will speak of our fortune in witnessing so many great players, and Ronaldo will join Messi at the very top of those mentioned.

It's one thing to attempt less dribbles because he's not in those positions out wide as much. But nearly every single game there are situations where he's 1 on 1 with a defender and where beating that defender would mean he creates a huge advantage. Then he starts doing stepovers and simply can't get by anyone.

I don't know how many Juventus games have you seen over the past two years, but his dribbling is awful.

Imo, we witnessed the best generation of football.
I'm a bit too young for late 80s and early 90s, but I think '85-05 was the peak.
It's just my personal opinion and what I consider football, but it started declining since then and it's been pretty bad since 2015ish.
Not bad as in that football is poor quality, it's probably the most tactical it ever was, but bad looking at the big picture.

Atmosphere across the continent is way worse than it was 20 years ago.
Ticket prices are skyrocketing in top leagues. Average people and especially younger kids can't attend games and then they wonder why kids are less interested in football.
There were always rich and poor clubs, but right now this is just segregation with all the money advantage top clubs have. Now they literally excluded weaker leagues from EL, that's the final blow.
There are no more players/teams that can surprise, because even for the most obscure player in the most obscure league, there's at least a 5 minute youtube compilation.
The diving culture and players deliberately seeking penalties/fouls is absolutely disgusting. Alongside all the complaining to the ref for every single decision.

It was a sport for everyone, nowdays it's becoming more and more for the selected few.

I agree. I think many people are feeling frustrated with the way European football is going. So many big historic clubs are stuck in leagues with little investment and watching any talent they do have getting sucked up by the big five leagues. The continental competitions have become fairly closed shops too.

It is strange. You would think that someone who was probably the top dribbler/flair player in the world at one point now struggles to beat people, but he definitely does struggle to do it.

It's probably a consequence of the muscle mass he's put on. Hard to gain that much without losing some agility.

He only played 3 minutes in that game. Pulled a hamstring coming on, scored 4, took his shirt off twice, got a red card.

:D that's what I suspected, too, but here's the match report: https://www.11v11.com/matches/iran-v-guam-24-november-2000-269968/

he played every single minute of the game. Top scorer was Karim Bagheri.

Guam's hapless manager was Willie McFaul of Newcastle fame.

Top Tier Football has become boring to watch.

I am struggling to watch a game completely until the end.

Because players are almost robotic now. Football is almost a science rather than a game/sport. Personality is a bad thing to have and statistics replace good old fashion passion.

I understand why, its about the money, but its a very watered down version of something that used to be.
