[Discussion] Penalty shootout drama - a list of suggestions

I’m just thinking of the Euro 2020 Italy vs England match we witnessed and how can we put all of the drama surrounding this into the game?

you had:

- players being subbed late in extra time just for the penalty kick

- players supposedly not wanting to take penalty kicks (this is probably just media narrative, someone with real world experience might know more)

- the whole seemingly connected storyline of Henderson in the Romania game supposedly pulling rank to take a penalty kick and missing, then seeming accepting & professional when subbed out before penalties in the Italy final

-  young players with a wide range of reactions and being heartbroken when missing penalties in the big game, being consoled by the manager on satellite TV.

- players with specific quirks and patterns when making penalties (think jorginhos hop)

- goalkeepers who supposedly study these patterns in training

Based off of these, here’s a list of some ideas and suggestions to bring this into the game!

1. Pre-penalty team and individual chats *after* choosing penalty lineup, along with reactions to being chosen or excluded.

2. players expressing desire to be in the lineup or not *before* choosing penalty lineup, as well as assessing body language and mentality before choosing.

3. Add a player preferred move for high flair/composure/penalty taking to do trick penalty shots - will need corresponding animation work and goalkeeper countering decisions in match engine. Maybe in penalty training your goalkeepers get a boost vs players who took penalties during the tournament or in last 365 days as part of film study.

4. This one is a little tangential, but my favorite - will probably expand in separate suggestion - I think it'll be fun to manage the more emotional side of younger / less resolute players during these heartbreaking moments, things that stick with people for better or worse through their careers. individual chats after the match for players who are heartbroken from a crucial moment such as missed penalty, missed late goal, allowed losing goal,  poorly defended losing goal, etc (this can probably be a whole separate feature suggestion). Maybe build off the “jaded” mechanic. Player is in an "unconfident" (long term) or "depressed" (severe, short term) state, captain/assistant manager suggests you talk to them, you have a branching convo which can either improve, maintain, or worsen their state, suggest time off, make demands, or offer a promise, resulting in improved or worsening relationship, better / worse training focus, resolution of state or shortening / lengthening of the duration of the state.  "Confidence" can be a mechanic similar to match fitness or morale. It can be built up or lost over a long period of time and through various high-pressure situations rather than week to week like morale. It can affect things like penalty taking and other high pressure / big game situations separate from morale where bad moments which haven't been mentally processed with come back to haunt people, or past successes inspire confidence in people, etc.

Would love to hear more ideas from people and get feedback!

These have been raised within the community before and so are already part our internal database of features for consideration. As such it may be rejected or with further development end up in a future release of FM.

These I don't believe have, although the new penalty animations itself have been. These are now also part of our features to consider and so is something that may end up rejected or in a future release :)
