"Fallen Giants"

Recommended Posts

Hi i got a question about this topic "fallen Giants" in real life football we could already see it a couple of times that big clubs fall down hard. As example Deportivo La Coruna, Schalke 04, HSV, Blackburn, Bolton etc.

It also happens in football manager on AI teams, but if a human Manager control a team it always increase at the performance. You never have to struggle to keep the top position you achieved or am i wrong? If you reached that point to win the league you always win the league and you never even struggle to qualify for the Champions League.

It would be cool if sometimes a season isn't winable maybe you are unlucky or something else.

Whats your opinion on it?

Definitely agree, there needs to be a bigger challenge (aka improving the ai, (better squad building, tactics pretty much everything)) or maybe even rarely if your finances somehow get bad that would also have a horrible effect (unlike currently where you miraculously get rescued by a nice football loving rich owner who's willing to clear all your debt for ya), or just a random season where your team just doesn't perform which also happens irl.

So in short yeah there needs to be something done.

And I know some people try doing 'challenges' but these are usually handicaps which managers/teams don't have irl either so imo just best if SI could do something about it.

I mean, if this happens it wouldn’t be happening to me alone. At some point, I, the manager, is going to be the change made to re-establish themselves or stop the rot or just let go because the club can no longer afford to keep me.

Maybe the board needs to be more ruthless as you win more and more. Great that you win the league on the reg, but without winning the CL, you’re more likely to get the ax or not renewed.

eh, you're not guaranteed to be on top forever just because you're a player (unless you're crazy good). But staying at or near the top isn't that unusual anyway, just look at Fergie at Utd. Plus you're obviously not going to fall too far with a club since they'd sack you before that happened anyway.

As an example of not staying on top, my Dortmund team won the Bundesliga twice in a row, 21/22 and 22/23 but then in 23/24 we finished 4th, a massive 39 points behind Bayern. The team hadn't even changed that much either. So far in 24/25 we're 2nd, 8 points behind Bayern with 10 games to go.

Plus for a lot of those clubs you mentioned they were never "that" big in the first place and it was largely a decline due to financial issues. eg. Blackburn's sugar daddy deciding not to bankroll the team anymore.

It must be nice for you to simply and automatically win everything once you get to the top. I have to actually do stuff to try to get on top and keeping the spot is not a guarantee for me.

It's not like I switch between winning and relegation but I got my work cut out for me.

With that said, if you want to have a setting that forces you to lose and drop down the leagues, then that's okay with me. Maybe there's already a mod or something similar that does something like that.
