Promoting to senior squad

Hiya, absolute newbie to FM, just got it for the switch.

 

Looked around, and can't find specifics on this.

How do you promote junior players to senior squad?

Tried changing roles for player, but doesn't show up in subs ?

Banged around, can't see anything obvious how to do this. Am I blind? 

 

Managing Southampton FC, with a starting transfer of $6 mil, I have to pull people out of the stands to get new players.

So after summer transfer, suddenly have all of junior squad appear in team selection, but how do you put them in as subs?

I can drag and drop them as starters, but wtf can I not do same to make them subs, or drag subs out, and change them for....frustrating that it's this stupid.

you can choose to include reserve players when choosing your lineup using the filter option. 

I have no issues changing players or selecting ones from the reserves so not sure if we are talking about the same thing.

If playing on console, you can click the right stick when hovering over a player and it will bring up what is essentially the right click menu, from here you can promote or demote players
