Highlights that start as a throw in in the attacking half ALWAYS lead to goals?

Recommended Posts

So, I'm into my 4th season in my first save of FM 22, and just wondering if anyone else is noticing as the title says. As a preface, this isn't a salty rage post, or me asking for tactical help or anything, just wondering if there's some slight imbalance in ... something... that leads to this being an issue. It's an 'issue' for me, in as much as I've now got some kind of Pavlovian response, were any time I see a throw-in in the attacking half, I expect there to be a goal.

As some frame of reference, here's some screenshots from my save. I'm managing FC Volendam, got them miraculously promoted to the Eredivisie after joining them mid-season. Just started the Eredivisie season, so yeah, I know I'm going to get spanked. I play on Key Highlights, with 2D display, if that matters as a course of what type of highlight I should be seeing. So the results:

Awful. But then, some of the goals from throw-in's. In reverse 'cos of no reason:

In the thrashing against Feyenoord, here was the overall result, with the times the goals were scored:

Goals directly from throw-ins, showing as the highlight starts (bar a second or two):

Against Emmen, result with the goal times:

Only one of the 3 goals was from a throw-in this time:

This is something that's been frequently happening in every season so far, and to be fair... it was something I always noticed in FM 21, too.

As I said in the first post, this is not me asking for tactical help, asking if this is a bug or anything else. I'm just curious if anyone else has seen this so far, or if it's just me. I asked somewhere else, and have asked friends who play the game, and they don't seem to see a plethora of goals coming from throw-ins, for or against. But so many goals (for and against) for me seem to come directly from throw-ins.

I mean, does this happen as frequently in real life football? Is this just a fair simulation of the game?

I've not edited any throw-in routines or anything into the game, just using the vanilla stuff. And to be fair, it's always a two way street that me and the AI benefit from. It's just frustrating to see that more or less 8/10 highlights that start as a throw-in seem to be a goal. it removes any sense of tension from the situation. More often than not if I see a highlight start as one of these throw-ins, I'll go off and pop the kettle on and make a brew. Because it near enough seems to be a set result, as maybe the ME doesn't have enough throw-in animation cut scenes sorted or something?

I dunno. Is it just me?

21 minutes ago, Neil Brock said:

Highlights need a starting point - this is often a dead ball, be in a goal kick, free kick or throw.

I get that, but surely can’t the ME generate highlights in more varied ways?

Taking my posts as a small sample size, I’ve played what… 7 games, in 5 of them a third of the goals came directly from throw ins.

Now, I’ll concede that I don’t get to watch a lot of ‘real football’. I work weekends, so most I get to see are the occasional Blackburn games on Tuesdays. Having said that, I make it a point to try and watch MotD every Saturday.

I could be misremembering, but for the life of me I can’t remember a single game from recent memory on MotD highlights that showed a team scoring within a minute or so of a throw in.

And isnt FM meant to be a simulation for real football?

Again, I’m not salty or anything. Just slightly baffled and curious as to the sheer abundance of throw ins leading to goals. Like, is it a reflection of real football I haven’t noticed? A sad but necessary quirk of the ME?

Traditionally TV highlights start mid-play or use cutaways (so close ups of players, managers etc), but the match engine isn't able to do so as doesn't have those options as easily available to it. That's why they tend to start from a dead ball situation.
