3-5-2 with RPM in front of DLP

Recommended Posts

Good afternoon:

I am using a 3-5-2 with wingbacks on attack, AF, PF, WCBs on support, and a BPD(De); my midfield 3 is this:

My first season went well, finished 2nd only to PSG. I was attacking and scored a ton of goals, which is nice. The issue I'm having is getting the most out of my DLP. His average rating was only 6.85 for the season. He made a lot of passes at 94% completion, but not many key passes. He also filled in very well when a WCB would move up the pitch. But his rating is bad. I'm wondering if this is because his role is in conflict with the RPM. Both the RPMs and the CM(At) on my teams played very well this season with ratings over 7 (7.20 in one case).

Would I be better served using a straight up DM(De) in that role instead? Would the player essentially do the same work defensively while struggling less to make key passes in conflict with the RPM? Thank you.

If you're playing shorter passing, your dlp is probably doing his job right: dictating tempo and putting simple passes for his teammates.

I'm playing a pretty aggressive counterpress and quick transitions, attacking mentality. Not really a controlled possession game. I wonder if that is part of the issue--that he isn't getting to dictate tempo as much.

If you are going for that style of play then I would seriously question the inclusion of two playmakers in your midfield. Why?

One would slow the play down quite a bit. Two will make it into a Tiki-Taka tactic.
