HighwayCathedral
Introduction Hello and welcome to the Promising Young Player sign-up. The gist of this sign-up is as follows: I’ll create your player in the game at the age of 16. I’ll then follow them over the course of the game, and I’ll post updates on their career progression, highlights of their matches, and snapshots of the game world as it develops around them. I’ll be running a great number of leagues (literally hundreds), so that there is a wide variety of club career paths available to your player. No league or nation is too obscure for your player (though for the sake of interest your player will have a high Potential Ability). --- --- --- Signed Up So Far Slot 1: Magnus Kristiansen, NOR/FRO, D(C), FK Mjølner, Norwegian Third Division, SoSolidSnake Slot 2: Yakiro Jones-Nguyen, ENG/VIE, ST(C) AM(RL), Blackpool, English Championship, Crealk Slot 3: Jon Grey, WAL/ENG, AM(C) ST(C), Wrexham, English Vanarama North, WrexFan Slot 4: Mohan Gurung, SCO/NEP, GK, Dundee United, Scottish Premier League, HighwayCathedral Slot 5: Davedinho, ENG/POR, AM(CR), Burnley, English Premier League, Davedinho Slot 6: Osian Jones, WAL/IRL, D(R), Dundalk, Irish Premier League, CardiffDragon --- --- --- Step 1 - Provide some basic details Portrait: Pick from one of the twelve custom portraits I’ve generated (see: images). Name: Pick a name (something sensible please)! Nationality: Pick your player’s nationality. Second Nationality: (Optional) Pick a second nationality (the language for this will be set at 50%). Natural Position: Pick your player’s Natural Position. Preferred Move: Pick any one Preferred Move for your player. Stronger Foot: Pick your player’s favoured foot. Favourite Club: Pick a club. You will get 100/100 support for this club. Second-Favourite Club: Pick a club. You will get 50/100 support for this club. Third-Favourite Club: Pick a club. You will get 25/100 support for this club. Preferred Shirt Number: Pick a Preferred Shirt Number. Note that you may automatically select your starting club for any of the above, if you so wish. Optional: Pick up to four staff job preferences from the following list: Spoiler Manager Assistant Manager Coach Fitness Coach Goalkeeping Coach Head of Youth Develoment Director of Football Technical Director Scout Chief Data Analyst Loan Manager Physio Head of Sports Science Chairperson These will be given 20, 15, 10, and 5 respectively. --- --- --- Step 2 - I give you your Stat Sets Once you have given me the above details (first come, first serve!) I will post you a set of 19 ‘Stat Sets’. These are 19x4 random groupings of attributes from the 56 attributes available. For instance, for one 'Stat Set' you might get: First Touch Pressure Free Kicks Jumping Reach Whilst for another you might get: Agility Corners Adaptability Work Rate --- --- --- Step 3 - You assign Dice Blocks to your Stat Sets Correspondingly, you will get 14x ‘Dice Blocks’ (one for each Stat Set). The types of Dice Blocks are fixed, and are as follows: 3x ‘Excellent’ [5*] 4x ‘Good’ [4*] 4x ‘Decent’ [3*] 3x ‘Poor’ [2*] This will translate, respectively, to the following dice rolls per attribute in that Stat Block: Excellent: 5d4 (min 5, middle 12-13, max 20) Good: 4d4 (min 4, middle 10, max 16) Decent: 3d4 (min 3, middle 7-8, max 12) Poor: 2d4 (min 2, middle 5, max 8) As you can see, it’s a bit of a spread, so that your player will feel like something of a wonderkid, but will still almost certainly have some areas of weakness (at least when they start out). So part of the fun will be making tough decisions on how to allocate your Dice Blocks to your Stat Sets! Below is a list of the 56 attributes available: Spoiler Technical (Outfielder): 1. Corners 2. Crossing 3. Dribbling 4. Finishing 5. First Touch 6. Free Kick Taking 7. Heading 8. Long Shots 9. Long Throws 10. Marking 11. Passing 12. Penalty Taking 13. Tackling 14. Technique Technical (Goalkeeper): 1. Aerial Ability 2. Command Of Area 3. Communication 4. Eccentricity 5. Handling 6. Kicking 7. One On Ones 8. Reflexes 9. Rushing Out 10. Tendency To Punch 11. Throwing 12. First Touch 13. Passing 14. Technique Mental: 15. Aggression 16. Anticipation 17. Bravery 18. Composure 19. Concentration 20. Decisions 21. Determination 22. Flair 23. Leadership 24. Off The Ball 25. Positioning 26. Teamwork 27. Vision 28. Work Rate Physical: 29. Acceleration 30. Agility 31. Balance 32. Height (i) 33. Jumping Reach 34. Natural Fitness 35. Pace 36. Stamina 37. Strength 38. Weak Foot 39. Weight (ii) Other: 40. Adaptability 41. Consistency 42. Dirtiness 43. Important Matches 44. Injury Proneness 45. Versatility (iii) (for Goalkeepers this will be replaced by Free Kick Taking) 46. Ambition 47. Controversy 48. Loyalty 49. Pressure 50. Professionalism 51. Sportsmanship 52. Temperment 53. Extra Preferred Moves (iv) 54. Extra Positions (v) (for Goalkeepers this will be replaced by Penalty Taking) 55. Starting Player Reputation (vi) 56. Starting Club Reputation (vii) (i) Height: A stat of ‘1’ = 150cm. You will get +3cm for every point above that (so a stat of ‘11’ would be +30cm, so 180cm in total). (ii) Weight: A stat of ‘1’ = 50kg. You will get + 2.5 kg (rounded up) for every point above that (so a stat of ‘11’ would be + 25 kg, so 75kg in total). (iii) Versatility: Adjacent unselected outfield positions will get 1/2 of your Versatility score, rounded down. So if you had only AM(C), then M(C), M(L), M(R), AM(L), and S(T) would all get a '6' automatically. This does not stack. However, for every additional adjacent position, you get a cumulative +2. This stat is not relevant for Goalkeepers (replaced by Free Kick Taking). (iv) Extra Preferred Moves: You will get an extra preferred move for every ‘4’ points in this stat (rounded down). So someone with ‘20’ would get 5 extra preferred moves, whilst someone with ‘6’ would get 1 extra preferred move. Note that the preferred moves will be presented as a choice from a random selection of 5 moves. (v) Extra Positions: You will get an extra position for every 4 points in this stat (rounded down). So someone with ‘20’ would get 5 extra positions, whilst someone with ‘5’ would get 1 extra position. The first position will be rated at ‘18’, the second at ‘16’, and so on. Not relevant for Goalkeepers (replaced by Penalty Taking). (vi) Starting Player Reputation: You will get 5 points for every point in this stat (i.e. to a maximum of 100/200). World Reputation will start out at 1/5 of this value. (vii) Starting Club Reputation: This will help determine the reputation of the club you start at, with a '1' meaning an initial range of 0-500. The reputation will be +500 for every point in this stat. So for instance a rating of ‘8’ would mean your starting club will have a reputation of between 3500-4000. Ideally, this will be from the same nation as your player. If not, your player may end up abroad. Outfielders will be given 1d8 in Aerial Ability, Command of Area, Communication, Handling, Kicking, One On Ones, Reflexes, and Throwing. They will be given 1d20 in Eccentricity, Tendency To Punch, and Rushing Out. Goalkeepers will be given 1d8 in Corners, Crossing, Dribbling, Finishing, Heading, Long Shots, Marking, and Tackling. Long Throws will be made the same as Throwing. Versatility will be set to 1. --- --- --- Step 4 - I generate the Stats according to your choices Once you’ve made all your choices, I will post you back the results of your dice block rolls. --- --- --- Step 5 - Pick your Extras Next, depending on what was rolled, you may choose your Extra Positions, and Extra Preferred Moves. The Extra Positions you want are up to you. They will be pointed at 18, 16, 14 etc. For each of the Extra Preferred moves, I will present you a choice from a random selection of 5 moves (with no repeats between seperate picks). --- --- --- Step 6 - I wrap things up Your player’s birth year will be set to 2005. Your birth month and day will be randomly determined. Next, I will roll 5 sets of 1d200: The 2nd highest value will be used for your player’s Potential Ability. The 4th highest value will be used for their Current Ability. These values will be kept a secret until your player retires. I will then reveal to you which club it is that you have started out at! If necessary, I will give a bit of background on the club to give you some context. Finally, your player will be given a 2-year youth contract with your starting club, at the club’s standard youth wage. Once all of the 5 starting players have been generated, the game will begin. --- --- --- The available portraits: Spoiler A B C D E F G H I J K L If you like the sound of this signup, please consider following this thread. Crealk
Poor skinny guy 😂 Height 186 and only weighing 58 with 9 strength. But exciting! HighwayCathedral
I will say @Crealk that you got fairly unlucky rolls on the whole. On the other hand 16 Anticipation is lovely at this age, and should combo well with Off The Ball, and First Touch. I would, erm, be worried about 2 Temperament and 4 Sportmanship. Looks like we have a new le Sulk

Looks like we have a new le Sulk Yes, especially on the [06]. Now I just hope for more luck on the CA/PA roll. And then hopefully the attributes will rise correspondingly. 12 hours ago, HighwayCathedral said: This will translate, respectively, to the following dice rolls per attribute in that Stat Block: Excellent: 5d4 (min 5, middle 12-13, max 20) Good: 4d4 (min 4, middle 10, max 16) Decent: 3d4 (min 3, middle 7-8, max 12) Poor: 2d4 (min 2, middle 5, max 8) Can you explain more about this, because I couldnt really understand. So 5d4 is 5 dices of 4 sides with 1, 2, 3 and 4 as possible outcomes right? And this then gives the attributes for the Stat Block? HighwayCathedral
@Crealk Yakiro Jones-Nguyen was born on the 5th May 2005. He was brought through the academy at Stockport County, who currently play in the Vanarama National League. He nearly got the top-rated team in Vietnam, but his Starting Club Reputation was just slightly too high. So to the English 5th Tier he goes! I'll probably add Yakiro him into the game later tonight. I'll likely start a seperate thread when it comes to keeping track of these players careers, to keep it cleaner.

Really looking forward to the remaining guys' players and attributes and the storytelling! That's right. It's a 4-sided dice, so you can get 1-4 per dice. Also, if you'd like, feel free to provide some biographical details (up to a paragraph or two) if you want to add something to the player introductions when we start the game. Any collaborative storytelling is allowed. Anything from to career plans, to relationships, to POV writing, to humor. But none of that is at all expected or mandatory. HighwayCathedral
@WrexFan Initially Jon Grey was looking like he was going to turn into a bit of an all-rounder, as you had generally rolled below-par for your Excellent/Good, and above-par for your Decent/Poor. But then the RNG gods took pity on you, providing us with a photo finish Out of nowhere, our first 20, for Finishing no less! And 18 Heading! Elsewhere, 2 for Injury Proneness can't hurt, and 14 Corners is alright I suppose. A small shame about having 5 Professionalism, and 2 Vision. HighwayCathedral
@WrexFan Jon Grey was born on the 2nd October May 2005. He was brought through the academy at Wrexham, who currently play in the Vanarama National League. I am genuinely shocked that you got Wrexham. But they show up as the only Welsh club between 3500-4000 reputation (3700 specifically)... which is exactly what Jon's 4000 means. Any higher you would have gotten Newport County. Any lower you would have gotten Merthyr Town. Amazing stuff. I almost wanted to pick another club because it's so damn serendipitous that it feels suspicious Who knows how long he will be there, but at least Wrexham will probably get a decent fee Also I just realized that two of our players are starting out in the Vanarama National, so there's a good chance we'll get a versus match in our first season. WrexFan
Oh wow! This kind of thing look okay for a bio? "Jon Grey attended his first football match before he turned a month old - his mother was (and still is) in charge of catering at Cefn Druids. Barely missing a game in the first few years of his life, he quickly became a well-known sight in his pram and lots of fans joked that he'd be on the pitch for Druids before they knew it. With that background, it's hardly surprising that he took to football like a duck to water, kicking a ball almost as soon as he could walk. Early in his life he was determined to play for Druids and there's part of him that still hopes he'll eventually end up there - ideally for a final season or two after a successful career at a somewhat higher level! He was recommended to Wrexham by a teacher a few years ago and signed for their academy at the age of 10. The Hollywood takeover by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney has left him more excited than ever about his future at the club and he's convinced that his natural goal scoring talent will make him a star of the Welcome To Wrexham documentary they're filming (and if that doesn't, his reputation as a prankster who loves winding teammates up, and his tendency to spend nearly as much time styling his hair as training, just might.)" Honestly, allocating the poor blocks was the easiest part, although not super happy with work rate in there, and I wish tackling could have been better than decent, but couldn't justify it. EDIT: I just thought, why are we still rolling for CA, given that every attribute has been individually rolled? If I remember the editor right, it will give a suggested CA when you've put in all the attributes. Is there not a case where the CA ends up being much lower (or higher) than the attributes rolled suggest, and therefore the game changes the attributes to match the CA? Although if that's intentional/what you want, go for it. Edited December 21, 2021 by SoSolidSnake

HighwayCathedral
@SoSolidSnake On the whole you rolled quite above-par, but obviously there are a few pain points for Magnus. His pace is not the greatest, he's fairly one-footed, and his physical intensity is lacking with only 4 Work Rate. However he is definitely smart for a 16 year old (14 Anticipation, 14 Decisions, 9 Positioning, 11 Off The Ball, 10 Vision), and has a decent range of passing. Given his 14 Versatility, and his decent movement, he could conceivably learn the DM position if some manager was minded to play him there. The Hollywood takeover by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney has left him more excited than ever about his future at the club and he's convinced that his natural goal scoring talent will make him a star of the Welcome To Wrexham documentary they're filming (and if that doesn't, his reputation as a prankster who loves winding teammates up, and his tendency to spend nearly as much time styling his hair as training, just might.)" That's great!

HighwayCathedral
Not a bad set of Stat Blocks I think! For goalkeepers I think there are a lot more useless stats, so picking the Poor and Decent sets were pretty easy. My biggest gripe is block [1]. I was hoping to have a good throwing stat to complement my Preferred Move, but the other attributes in there are pretty tame. I feel like I can safely ignore [2], [7], and [11]. Meanwhile going fairly low on [5] makes me nervous, but getting a small goalkeeper wouldn't be the end of the world. On a more positive note, [8], [9], [10], and [12] are lovely sets. The main set I am looking at, however is, number [14]. My strategy from the start is to try and get as big a club as possible, to maximize my player's chance of early development. I also love a Goalkeeper with good Communication, so that has to get one of my 'Excellent' ratings. [01] Decent [02] Poor [03] Good Throwing Passing Decisions Loyalty Starting Player Reputation Handling Acceleration Pressure Free Kick Taking Off The Ball Injury Proneness Weak Foot [04] Decent [05] Decent [06] Decent Adaptability Height Flair Command of Area Balance Strength Controversy Weight Extra Preferred Moves Jumping Reach Dirtiness Agility [07] Poor [08] Excellent [09] Good Work Rate Pace Leadership Teamwork Natural Fitness Sportsmanship Technique Professionalism Ambition Stamina One On Ones Anticipation [10] Good [11] Poor [12] Good Reflexes Bravery Consistency Positioning First Touch Concentration Kicking Temperament Aerial Ability Tendency To Punch Penalty Taking Determination [13] Decent [14] Excellent Vision Communication Aggression Rushing Out Eccentricity Starting Club Reputation Important Matches Composure

For my second set I drew: Plays Short Simple Passes Likes To Switch Ball To Other Flank Plays Ball With Feet Dwells On Ball Stays Back At All Times I picked Plays Short Simple Passes. Not sure if it will work for Goalkeepers, but I like Goalkeepers who try to build from the back, and this might help with that. --- On the whole I'm fairly happy with my rolls! It started out pretty well. However there were some disappointments. 8 Anticipation, 9 Reflexes, 3 Pressure, and 6 Aerial Ability aren't great. On the other hand, I can't complain about 13 Consistency, 13 Natural Fitness, 17 Composure, 13 Professionalism, 14 Positioning, and 16 One On Ones. 18 Pace is incredibly random . Given that Mohan is looking like a Sweeper Keeper above all else, it would have been more helpful to have Acceleration, but I can't complain. The other bit of randomness is Free Kick Taking. Perhaps there will be a goal or two for him in his career? As far as Birth Date goes, it seems Mohan was born on the 21st April 2005. His starting club is.... Dundee United! That's pretty solid I think. If I'd rolled 3 points higher I might have gotten one of the old firm. But I'll take that for sure. WrexFan
Loving the idea of a 16-year-old Chilavert-style keeper hammering home long range free kicks, and then using that pace to sprint back if the defence clears it!
HighwayCathedral
Bio: Mohan Gurung's father (Ganes) was in the British Army as part of the revered Gurkha Brigade. Following many years of service Ganes Gurung earned settlement in the UK. Ganes and his wife (Sobha) decided to settle in Edinburgh, where they, not unusually, helped to run a small Nepali restaurant business. Mohan himself was born and bred in Scotland, and consequently considers himself Scottish. However he has pride in his Nepali heritage, and for his Dad's service in the British army, and so retains some fondness for his ancestral heritage. Mohan grew up playing lots of sports. Cricket and Tennis got almost as much a shout as Football, and some of the rest of his time was devoted to Army Cadets, as he contemplated following his father footsteps into the army (a prospect his father had mixed feelings about). Despite growing up in Hearts/Hibs territory, Mohan couldn't help but be entranced by the spectacle of the Old Firm derby, and in particular The Hoops fervent and passionate support base. It didn't hurt, of course, that they kept winning things. Sometimes, when playing football casually, it would be suggested that Mohan start in goal. Probably this was down to unconcious bias amongst some of the other lads that South Asians aren't good at football. As it turned out: Mohan was actually pretty darn good at shot-stopping. Whether it was between a pair of blazers, or stood between two posts, Mo just kept tipping shots over. Possessing great quickness, Mohan especially loved coming off his line and charging down strikers before they could get a shot away. One thing led to another, and one day it was with tearfulness (but no small amount of pride) that Mohan found himself hugging his parents goodbye before they headed back to Edinburgh, having dropped him off for his first day at Dundee United. Not a bad set of stats, although 7 professionalism and 6 tackling 😭 ouch. I was kind of hoping he could be some kind of wide centre back, especially with that crossing, passing and vision - hopefully the speed and work rate dont restrict me too much. But yeah, a DM could work too.
HighwayCathedral
@SoSolidSnake All noted. Magnus was born on the 7th of August 2005. He starts off at FK Mjølner (based in Narvik), all the way down the Norwegian Third Division! Note: I need to add in some custom leagues for Norway. I'll also need to make sure that this plays nice with my current extra leagues. For the moment I'm working under the assumption that it will be fine. Otherwise, we might have to shuffle Magnus somewhere else. Edited December 23, 2021 by HighwayCathedral

HighwayCathedral
@Davedinho So Davedinho has the most balanced profile of all players rolled so far. They don't have any real standout technical qualities, but good Leadership, Stamina, Positioning, and Technique mean that they will be appreciated by the team. There are a few concerns I'd have. They lack physical intensity, with 7 Strength, 3 Balance, 7 Bravery, and 6 Aggression. They're also just about the last person I'd put on man-marking duty, with 3 Marking, 6 Jumping Reach, 7 Heading, and 2 Concentration. But if they're playing at AMC, most of what I've mentioned won't be that relevant. My main worry would be 3 First Touch Perhaps they could wind up as a Free Kick Specialist. 11 Free Kicks, 14 Technique, and 9 Composure is pretty decent for a 16-year-old. HighwayCathedral
OK @Davedinho, @Crealk, @WrexFan, @SoSolidSnake. Having rolled everyone up, I have come to the conclusion that I have been slightly too stingy, and everyone's stats probably need a slight boost. To that end I am allowing everyone to pick one 'Good' category and transform it into an 'Excellent', and to take one 'Decent' category, and transform it into a 'Good' (as an added bonus this will make the distribution of dice blocks symmetrical i.e. 3 Excellent, 4 Good, 4 Decent, 3 Poor). So let me know which Decent and which Good stat block you want boosted, and I will roll an extra d4 for each attribute in those block. For Mohan: [01] Decent -> Good 8 -> 9 Throwing 7 -> 9 Loyalty 8 -> 10 Acceleration 7 - > 11 Off The Ball [03] Good -> Excellent 11 -> 13 Decisions 11 -> 12 Handling 14 -> 15 Free Kick Taking 12 -> 14 Weak Foot Edited December 23, 2021 by HighwayCathedral
