There is a “Live Start” feature that you can enable before the start of a new season. Basically when enabled, you can take over which ever team of your choosing and resume the real life schedule. Current standings, stats, transactions, player ratings and results get pulled from real life data. So take over at any point in the season that remains in real time. Basically, can you do better than the manager in real life?
