I ask him what he wants, and he wants to be star player. Option one: just laugh. Option two: tell him he has the potential if he keeps developing (but don't promise a revised contract). Option 2a -- same, but offer improved path to higher status in future seasons. 2. I tell him his release clause wasn't met, and he responds that it is unrealistic. Option one: say "take it up with your agent". Option 2: say "I'm surprised you have such a low opinion of yourself" Option 2a: the same, plus "maybe I should let you go in that case" -- possible responses: rise to the challenge/gratefully seize the concession.
