Player search focus on role or general position

when searching for new player(s) do you focus on the specific role that the player will be playing in your tactic or the general position?

For the initial search I would suggest that you start with position only and once you have got down to a short list, look at role then.  If you are too specific with the initial filter, you run the risk of missing a perfectly good match for your needs

I play with generated players (disclaimer). If I'm looking for someone for one of the more fancy roles, especially attacking midfield (Raumdeuter, Enganche for instance) I'll search for those to see if there are any out there worth pursuing. Otherwise, as Fraz says, start with position. The players who get identified have their best roles as part of the data, so you can home in from there.
