How to find improvements over players that you have?

I'm about to enter transfer season and want to upgrade certain positions where my players are already  pretty good. I tend to use the scout star ratings  and how they compare to my other players for the same position. I'm not sure how accurate that is. How do you decide if a player is an upgrade to what you already have?

You can compare players directly with each other. 

When you go to player´s profile, on the top you have compare and there you select the other one. 

From there you can see there stats and such. From my own point of view, age, stats, personality and potential are most important. In addition, look at the ´hidden´ stats by reading what your scout has to sat about professionalism, injury probability and such. 

Be aware that the value of a player can be utterly skewed due to the competition they are in. Therefore, 50k in Africa somewhere might translate to 5 million in Europe.
