You seem to want a possession style of play but it can be difficult if you are an underdog + your roles and duties fit a more direct approach in my opinion.

Defensively, you can remove the more urgent pressing to be more solid defensively and against stronger opposition you could play with a Lower LOE to be more compact and hit them on the break
