Season 1 2023-2024 : VNN

Competitions |Matches | Squad | Transfers | Finances | Supporters | Facilities

League: With just 1 CB we had a very leaky defense, but our offense was strong enough to secure us a 13th place finish never feeling the risk of relegation

Cup: We actually did okay in the FA Cup, winning our first two matches before we got paired with Notts Co where they edged us out 1-2 in a quality home match. Honestly, for the next few years I hope we suck in cups as we don't have the depth to play any more games.

Squad: The team had lots of Midfielders and forwards but just 1 GK and 3 Defenders, with only one of them being a CB. He is an amazing player for this level getting a full 5* and Rated to be Decent for League 2, I don't disagree: 

The issue was no one was any good to pair with him. I had 2 DMs who I used. One was 5'3" and averaged a 6.33 rating playing 38 matches... The other got sent off twice in 11 starts, got so many yellow accumulations he was suspended for as many games as he started, and spent over 3 months injured. 

 

Fan Trust Takeover:

In October we had a Fan Trust takeover, which is really cool. Sadly, this has introduced bugs to my game with respect to the "Supporters Vision", which is now broken as well as the effect on the Board by the Supporters. I'm assuming this will also break any of the new interactions when the fans are upset/happy. Shame as this has the potential to be really interesting with a fan-controlled club.

Youth Intake: What a haul of ability and personalities: 2 Professional, 1 Driven, 1 Resolute, & 4 Fairly Professional and a lot of Elite talents! My CB above is a 5* player and is rated as an average League 2 player, so these Elite talents truly have potential.

Exceptional Talents: These 3 players will be directly replacing my 3 star players (CB, RB & BBM) who have refused to sign a new contract. I got seriously lucky with this intake. There are 6 total players who are in the first team rotation immediately, with multiple others who will probably get pulled up during next season.

Ali Edmondson is the perfect CB for this level: Those are some narly mentals and he will instantly be our Captain with that epic combo of Det & Leadership with a Professional Personality. 

 

And then we have Sean Howes at CM, perfect BWM. I can’t stress enough how amazing of a roll these two guys are for a first intake. 

 

At FB we get Joe Vaughan who I’m perfectly content with for RB 

 

I didn't fully clean up the spreadsheet, but it gets the job done and I just want to get back to playing with all these hot new prospects!

Season Thoughts

Basically the season went how I hoped. We will still be a defensive mess next year with three16 year-olds in the back line, but we are keeping the entire offense so hopefully they can deliver again next year. Also with the just unreal good personality roll I got coupled with actually half decent facilities I'm hoping to see some development (even if people claim its bugged again this year).

*Note on Transfers: I took over the club on 7/1 so the AI made a transfer before I took over on 6/27.

 

**Edit: Forgot to show off my great find of a HOYD at the start of the game. Jed Setchell is basically perfect for this level, and has already improved 0.5 Star Rep & +1 JPA with his first Coaching Badge:

Yeah, I saw it, but snice it's still unclear what the issue is (and potentially all players are equally affected) it should not impact as much in the long run. I'll be playing my save and if it turns out it's not save compatible, then at least I had fun in Belgium!

been a frequent lurker here and read all of your story. now I'm tempted to join this challenge (although, in my plan, i will not buy FM23. so, maybe I'll do it in FM22.) 

but before start this challenge, I want ask something to make it clear to me. is it a must to play in lowest tier league available in the database? or can I play in the mid tier league? like, in Italy, can I play in serie B and not load serie c when serie c is available?

Lowest tier. In that case you need to sim a season and pick a club promoted from Serie D (unplayable) to Serie C.

That's my thoughts.  If all players are equally impacted, then it shouldn't be an issue.

I read in pre reports (news) that it would have relegation this season....hmm haven't tested it, maybe it will come in later. Sad to hear it's not.....maybe next year.

Got on a roll and reached as high as second but started on a poor run last five. Hopefully can get that turned around. Wasn't expecting to be this good to start, but I do want to make a run at promotion since, why not?

I'd presume it was still there,  although without IGE can't say for sure,  but I'd be surprised if anything one did in this challenge in early seasons did anything to it,  and even once you're at the top domestically,  not sure it can be moved faster than about 1 point a season.

If i'm correct now it should be :

In the third tier = 38 games

Second tier 22 regular games, 10 extra games in playoff format  = 32 games.

First division if you get into top 8 = 34 regular games and 6 playoff games = 40 games.

After one season the first tier should end up with 16 teams in stead of 18.

Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 after first season should have 18 teams.

Looking good ! Do you know if the league structures look fine for Belgium? more specific the rules concerning U13 / B teams in the second, third and fourth tier

Yes, that part looks good. But there is a bug in the cup, as the youth teams enter the cup too, just like in FM22 with Club NXT. At that was never solved last year.

Starting FM 23 with a league I haven't attempted before (can't actually remember the last time I ever managed a team from this nation), Switzerland (I have a South Shields save sitting in wait if this one goes sour!)

The Swiss league you want to holiday to 27th of May to then progress to 28th where the relegation play-off team is determined. The league then updates on 1st July (if the team from the Promotion League win the play-off of course)

  

FM 23 sees my manager rock the Ichiban Kasuga look!

Swiss league has 2 divisions with the Challenge league seeing 1 automatic promotion for the winners and 2nd place have a play-off with the team finishing second to last in the Super League Relegation Group.

EDIT: I want to keep an eye on how (if) the Club Support Profile changes over time so here it is on day 1

@Neo_GeoI've just started a save in the Swiss leagues as well. There's 3 promoted teams if the lower league team wins the playoff, confused me for a while until I realised the Super League was restructured from 10 to 12 teams. Did you get the choice of Chiasso, Kriens and Rapperswil?

Edit; I've just taken over Rapperswil-Jona (excellent academy coaching the only reason) and I've just checked the affiliates. They have a Senior affiliate link in Grasshoppers and there's a clause stating "The terms of this deal will prevent Rapperswil from playing in the same division as Grasshoppers". There's no option to negotiate or cancel the link either so I'm assuming this would prevent the club getting promoted unless Grasshoppers manage to get relegated in the same season?

I would check the rules of the league. I'm pretty sure that there is stated that Rapperswil can't get promoted. I'm afraid that this is a team that can't be used for this challenge.

Might be with South Shields after all!

I'm guessing it might be terminated automatically upon promotion since its not like its a B team or something

Haha I've just looked at the other teams I had promoted and they've all got links to a Super League team with the same terms. I don't want to get a couple seasons in and find out that link won't be terminated so it's back to deciding where to go again for me!

That must pretty much render the Swiss league as being one you can't complete then, unless there are teams from the promotion league that don't have such a link.

I have a feeling it would be terminated upon promotion, but as you say you don't want to put all that effort in to then have to hope that your affiliated team get relegated when you get promoted

Regarding the Swiss leagues: I had two attempts in Switzerland for FM22 and one of them I was Rapperswil. The link broke when I got promoted. It is worded weird for sure though so I understand not taking the risk.

We've done it! A win away to Armagh City seals promotion to the 2nd tier whilst they fall down to 3rd.

Last year Gimpo FC was promoted from K3 to K2. But since world cup is in November, promotions could be suspended until the 2023 season. At least its what the Internet says

I can say thus far my youth players are improving as expected for a part time club. Maybe the issue happens after 18 when playing time gains importance?

What does seem to impact my players development much more is player morale. Doing the 'praise training' spam to keep them happy though annoying is important to keep the high training ratings. Also actually resting them seemed to result in dropping abilities so I just rotate and take the L during congestion.

Im halfway through season 2, I'll show detail after I finish the season. Those guys who Sim many seasons aren't micro managing training and morale so it might just be SI have made development even less guaranteed now, which is something I'm all for.

2023-24 Season Review:

Around the midpoint teams seemed to figure that our keeper is terrible (the guy I planned to play when I picked the team immediately retired and I was stuck with a guy that started with two white stars for current ability). We were top 5 in Goals scored but also in goals allowed. It's disappointing to have gone from 2nd and just out of 1st to mid table, but the goal was to not get relegated and we accomplished that.

Nothing much here. a coaching course. After I captured this the season tickets came in and the finances were in the black. 

Youth Intake:

With how strong the intake preview I was hoping for a little bit more. Our top intake player broke his ankle in preseason so hopefully he's not a total bust. 

2024/25 Season Preview:

Keeping the sponsors, but not keeping the stripes. The blue kits were used a lot so I'll keep updating them.

I messed around a bunch trying out the low block tactics they supposedly improved. Full low block defense I couldn't get to work, but I was able to tinker enough to stop the bleeding last season while still scoring well enough. I'm going to need a lot of 3-2 type wins to have a shot at promotion. I suspect mid table.

Championnat National

Season Summary

Boulogne are an interesting challenge. They were in the top French league as recently as 2009/10 but have freefallen since then and are now semi-pro, albeit back in the third tier. You'd hope their starting facilities would befit that of a team so recently in the top league but they're really not. Even weirder, and possibly a bug, rather than playing in their own stadium in Boulogne, that holds 10k, they are homeless in the game and playing at a stupid little stadium in a tiny little village miles away called Cormontreuil. It's very odd but what can you do? i've started with worse!

The starting squad were ok but on the old side. The bonus was the four 4 star potentials in the youth squad. But the worry was that the Championnat National is being reduced from 18 sides to 16, and with 4 feeder leagues it meant there were 6 relegation spots in a league of 18! That worried me a little bit, particualrly as we were predicted to finish 17th.

It was a really close league, with often only 3 or 4 points between 5th and a relegation spot. A good run after christmas of 5 wins out of 6 pulled us out of trouble and we managed to stay there. But I have no idea where this team sits in terms of promotion/relegation for next season, particularly as more of those youth players are going to have to be promoted to the first team

 

Youth

A really nice preview and intake! Are my starting squad that bad? Probably! 

The intake could have been better in terms of determination but I really can't complain at this stage. 

I really like the range of nationalities though, I do like a cosmopolitan squad

 

Finances and Upgrades

We're losing money hand over fist, which is upsetting cos ideally I'd go professional soon as I can. It emant no matter how good a run we were on the board would not budge on any improvements off the field. The only thing they'd do is support my first two coaching badges. It's a start!

I quite like this new supporter thingummy. Gonna keep an eye on that, particularly as they seem quite influential at Boulogne!

I thought that the 4th tier isn't playable at the start, only visible. But when you get relegated you can play in the 4th tier with the relegated team (if you don't get sacked )

sadly the promotion/relagation in south korea seems not to be implemented.
