I get the the game is called Football Manager and should be focused on the management of the team and tactics. But always liked the idea of being more involved with the budgeting of the club and investing money in infrastructure, stadium renovation etc. Having the ability to funnel money from one department in to another with consequences and rewards of doing so. Like not taking care of maintenance because you invested in to transfer budget could lead to fine for club of partial closure of stands etc. Would add another level of realism to the game as some managers have ability to make drastic changes to behind scene stuff. Would also have chance to use it to entice or scare players to/away from your club, after having a tour during negotiations, would be a chance to sell the club to them, where they wouldn't normally sign for a club because they like the feel of it, or visa versa. Would have moral gains and losses for players already signed if locker room needs remodeling. Could also have a say in New kit designs every season which would be made up of default/customized designs and negotiations with sponsors for the club etc to help squeeze out the extra £/$.

That's why it was suggested as a directors role, as some manager have the opportunity to step in to directors role after so many years of service. And in 2012 Ally McCoist was showing up to convince investors at Rangers. . Reason why people have been suggesting it as there maybe be a market for it. Albeit a small one
