Lesterfan_Cambiasso
Hi Everyone I dont have any screenshots to show, as ive tried multiple approaches to games vs opposition of different standards. How the hell do you win an away match on FM23???? At home, i regularly win practically every game. And this can be done through a number of styles too, but generally speaking in whatever approach, players look sharper, quicker, close down more urgently etc. When I go away, no matter what the approach, the opponent finds a way through. Against 4231 for example, ive gone for a low block, send the opponent away from goal, and had the two strikers come back and mark their midfield two. Regroup behind the ball, two banks of four and attack on the break. They find a way through, we lose. So then im thinking ok, lets win it high off them, high lines, press urgently, all "go together" and use a counterpress....nope. They pass their way through you and score. So then Im thinking ok....lets create numerical advantages all over the field. Theyve got 1 or 2 strikers, ill set up with a back 3. Theyve got two central mdfielders then ill set up with 3, and go 3-5-2. Funnel them with the trap inside so they lose the ball where all the bodies are, and we can spring a break to the wings where there will be space for the wingbacks to bomb forward. Again....no joy. Even when you manage to shut them out in open play, someone has to do something silly, like give away a penalty, or make an individual mistake, or we concede a set piece. Im tearing my hair out to be honest, ive never seen it like this before. Ive managed a few teams for a season each so far of varying abilities.....same story every time. What is going on people? please give me some general pointers. Thanks!
xturqz
Yeah, the difference is insane. The away team doesn't even look like they are trying, they get the ball and just stand there with it until they lose it, nobody makes any movement. "Pressing" is just walking vaguely near the guy on the ball then letting them do whatever they want with it. It's at the point where I'm way more confident about a home game against city than an away game against fulham
Jack722
Away games are hard. Lower the pressure on the players in press conferences and team talks before the game. Also avoid doing anything silly like playing someone in a different position for the first time or drastically changing a tactic just before an away game. It's not a tactical problem, other than perhaps going too attacking. For example, if my standard tactic is an attacking mentality and high pressing, for most away games (apart from the easiest of teams) I will add another defensive duty, drop to positive, and defend in a mid block. sonnevillejr
Teams at home are more attacking so it may be a tactical problem. If you commit too many players forward the opposition is more likely to use the space Edited October 27, 2022 by sonnevillejr

Of course, playing away from home brings its own challenges but you shouldnt need a fundamental shift in approach just to go away. Its more the way this is represented in the match engine too, why players suddenly seem incapable of passing, pressing or even finishing the same way they do at home. It baffles me. When you play at home, IA teams usually play with a lower mentality and therefore are more likely to suffer from your pressing and you won’t notice anything since you are not in danger. When they play at home they are more aggressive, if your players can’t play under these circumstances you should review the tactic
