Libero behavior in game

Recommended Posts

Hi SI team,

During my game with 3 CBs, I realized that we need improve LIBERO role behavior in game.

As per instruction of this role, he should move forward to support midfield when team is in possession.

But in current game engine, LIBERO will move forward a little when GK keep the ball, and turn back when other player keep the ball, and he will not join the pass.

Hope SI team could evaluate and improve the movement of LIBERO. I think at least LIBERO should behave somewhat like a DLP at DMC position.

Just to mention - the next update won't contain any tweaks to this, but a later one will - thanks for the feedback :D

Hi Marc, have not seen the tweak of libero yet in FMM2024. Will it come with FMM2025?

Just as a note - the movement (or lack of) is a relatively infrequent but consistent question from new FMM players on Vibe + the Discord group.

Multiple FMM players can’t understand why the Libero isn’t moving into the DMC area when their team are in possession.

We typically answer that (when your team are in possession) the Libero does step forward, but only when the ball is in YOUR half, otherwise they stay next to the other DCs when the ball is in the oppositions half. When they ask ‘why?’, we shrug and answer ‘no idea’.

Could I check what mentality you're playing as within the tactics? - with a Libero they'll roam more if you're approaching the game in an attacking manner (normally moving further upfield), if however you're set to be defensive or contain then they'll act somewhat more restricted with regards to how far they'll step forward ... this is because you've told your team to be more defensive.

PS - I am actively tweaking this role for FMM25's release presently.

Hi Marc - yeah most of us have been testing it with more positive mentalities (control, attacking, overload) and still noticing that the Libero doesn’t move forward (in advance of normal DCs) once the ball roughly passes the half-way line.

On FMM23, I tried to account for other variables

Spoiler

- tested this using a Libero with all 20’s for mentals, edited from a great personality player (a de-aged Milner from memory)

- in the middle of a back 3 (three DCs), with no DMC, and something like two B2Bs in front (so the Libero wasn’t blocked by teammates)

- and tested vs oppositions who play without an AMC (e.g. a 41221).

That was some time ago though (1 year ago?) … let’s see if I can dig out screenshots. Most of our questions about this are from new users on FMM24.

Quick Test - on ‘OVERLOAD’ mentality.
On FMM23, latest update, new save, with Man City in a friendly.

Spoiler
This shows that even on Overload mentality - the Libero rarely moves forward / ahead of your other DCs*

*when your team are in possession + the ball is in the opposition half.
————————————

Setup - Center Backs
Edited Man City’s three DCs to be both-footed, 20’s for mental, 15’s for technical / physical attributes.

So they make the right decisions, even if they can’t execute them perfectly.

Setup - Tactic
A 3412, to ensure there is LOTS of space for the Libero to move into.

Plus we played against an opposition 442 - so still lots of space for the Libero to move into.

Results #A
Only 3 highlights (<20%) showed the Libero moving forward / in front of the other two DCs (while the team are in possession, in the opposition’s half).

2 of these 3 were from wide set pieces (throw in + wide free kick)

In a huge 14 highlights (+80%) the Libero did NOT step forward / in front of our other DCs (while the team are in possession, in the opposition’s half).

(yes I watched extensive highlights)

Note
Yes the Libero does work IN YOUR HALF (the previous results were all in the opposition’s half) - I took screenshots but apparently there’s too many to upload in one post

Conclusion
In FMM23 - even on Overload mentality and accounting for other variables - the Libero rarely moves forward (3 times in one match) when your team are in possession + the ball is in the opposition half.
