cheers, striking has sadly been a big problem for this side at the moment and it's flipping annoying. hopefully things will change soon though

Season 2003-2004 Pre Season

With May and the previous year barely over, George set to work on informing all players of the wrong nation to hop on their bike and sod off. Chris MacKenzie was kept from hearing the bad news initially as George wanted to ensure he could find a capable replacement first but aside from him:

Thomas Skjovberg, Marc Williams Matthew Glennon, Peter Dyer, Austin Berkely, Richard Walker and Martyn Sullivan were all given their marching orders in a surprise bon voyage party arranged by the club. George was a wee bit surprised to hear so many angry voices, though none were quick to pick up on the common denominator amongst those in that room.

First to leave was Peter Dyer hitching rides down the M1 to sign a contract with Kingstonian , rejecting Cowdenbeath in the process. The move was on a free transfer as George highly doubted as to whether he’d be able to shift any of the foreigners for a fee.

As June began, so did the qualifiers for Portugal again with Scotland defeating Azerbaijan 4-0 thanks to Colin Cameron and Alex Rae , propelling Craig Brown’s side back to 2nd spot, 2 points ahead of Poland.

Meanwhile back in the office George was finding life a little swamped as he battled with videos and reports offered by scouts and agents. The majority never even got a look in once George had made a brief scan of nationalities. A few of the big sides announced their young guns were being released though and George was setting himself up for a few days of intense negotiating. Selling Fort William was a next to impossible task for most, although he was hoping to use Jamie McAllister as an example to others.

It took a few days but on the 8th, George announced to the delight of many a Fort William supporter the signing of 22 year old Alan Reid on a free transfer. The former Hibs player had recently recovered from 10 month injury, damaged ligaments and was prepared to fight his way back the hard way, signing a 1 year deal initially with a minimum release fee of 100,000 pounds if things should go well. It was a deal that suited both club and player.

That signature prompted Bruce Morrison to renew his contract at the club, taking a wee pay cut in doing so, perhaps recognizing what George was now trying to do with the club. Soon after Gary Moore was released from his contract, only again to be resigned up on a cheaper deal as George took advantage of the doped up defender.

Shortly afterwards the results from the fans player of the year award were revealed and it was no surprise to see retiring striker Leo Fortune West top of the pile. Even George admitted his form would be missed, but hopefully Chris Hay and Alan Reid would be able to step in and do a good enough job.

Michael Stone completed his move on the same day Peter Duncan left the club. George was hopeful of a quick renewal but unfortunately he was slightly more intelligent than Gary. The board’s denouement for the coming year had suddenly changed. Improvement was called for and a top 6 finish was now the target.

Loan bids were soon fired off to other division two and three clubs as George hoped to increase the chances of securing a decent placing this year. Surprisingly he earnt two quick successful responses as in came Craig Strachan a 19 year old midfielder from Montrose for the duration of the season, and Alex Grace again, the 29 year old Dumbarton player would join the team over pre-season so he could be assessed. Another Dumbarton midfielder Alan Brown joined until September, giving George that extra bit of choice, ahead the squad’s trip to Northern Ireland.

Meanwhile, George’s hopes of signing talented Dundee player Keith Gibson on a bosman were hit when the deal was vetoed by the board who were not prepared and more to the point were not able to pay the 40,000 pound compensation fee. The 22 year old attacker would have been a great addition rued the Scot, as he continued his search for that extra special talent prepared to come and play in the Third Division.

July began bearing good news. Jamie McAllister officially arrived and turned up at 10.a.m. on the dot for pre-season training. The mood suddenly lifted amongst the stalwarts of the side to see the quality defender here on a permanent basis.

Stirling faced through a 3k bid for defender and midfielder Although George certainly recognized the efforts put in by his defender he wasn’t by any means an essential member of the squad and as a result the bid was negotiated up to an affordable 5k.

There followed a free transfer bid from Berwick Rangers for 30 year old striker Marc Williams and the Welshman was of course given permission to discuss terms. Almost instanteously after replying in the affirmative to the English Scottish side, than Brian Clark knocked on the door to say goodbye and thanks for the memories, the defender completing his move away.

Brian Clark 63 starts, 6 sub appearances, ave. rating –6.17

After that and George read that Peter Duncan had agreed a 2 year contract with second division side Queen’s Park, the left back making his long desired step up.

Peter Duncan 54 starts, 6 sub appearances, 3 MoM, ave. rating 6.72

Whilst it seemed as though everyone was leaving in this busy period, George’s sadness was only temporary. After all the net gain of these player’s contributions had been successive 10th, 10th and a 9th placed finish. The only way is up. Marc Williams agreed relatively quickly to move, popping back to wish everyone the best of luck, before leaving the rusty grey gates for the final time.

Marc Williams 48 starts, 15 sub appearances, 12 goals, 3 assists, 2 MoM, ave. rating 6.55

On the highly positive side though another strong defender agreed to at least a trial move as former Dundee United defender Mark Wilson agreed to try and resurrect his career. Shortly upon arrival, and clearly impressed by the higher standards than expected on the training grounds, Mark even admitted he’d contemplate a permanent move and so tentative strides were made in that direction.

James Goodwin the half Scottish Celtic reject though wasn’t too keen on a trial – he felt that having only left the SPL giants that summer, that a move to at least a First Division club was a certain possibility. George though didn’t give up on him, he’d be back in a month when the kid hadn’t found a club yet.

As the squad boarded the ferry bound for Northern Ireland, Matthew Glennon informed George at the last minute he wasn’t coming, as Brechin were keen to add him to their ranks. George obliged and was not surprised to read in the hotel paper the following morning that he was expected to complete formalities that day.

Matthew Glennon 9 starts, 1 sub appearance, 17 goals conceded, ave.rating 6.50

However as the board began wondering if the squad was supposed to be decreasing like this George reminded them that Marc Wilson had promised to seal a deal with the club before the first friendly fixture that afternoon, which he duly did.

Pre Season Round Up

The first match was a trip to Larne in a game where George was able to further evaluate the strengths and weakness’ in his side. 2 most notable points were the complete absence of a right sided midfielder in the squad, whilst their was little joy to be found at right back either. Gary Smith and Gary Moore were the only options and neither were too bright, as they highlighted perfectly well in nearly conceding three times between them. Not an impressive start. Alex Grace though suffered an injury which would rule him out for 3 weeks.

As a result George quickly brought in Michael Dickie of Stirling in on loan until October to see if he could be the missing link in midfield, whilst further interest in Keith Gibson had to put on hold until he left Dundee for good. The friendly against Larne also the end of Leo Fortune West’s stay with Fort William as he announced his permanent retirement from the game and returned to England. As a tribute every player had a drink for him in the lounge before his departure.

Leo Fortune West 31 starts, 4 sub appearances, 11 goals, 2 assists, 4 MoM’s, ave. rating 7.03

The away tie against Dundela in the next friendly, was a vast improvement on the first as Fort William controlled play, and showed a degree of stability in defense even if the substitutes contrived to allow the hosts to equalize with 10 minutes left, canceling out Phil Cannie’s first half strike.

With the introduction of Dickie , George was able to move Phil Cannie up into his preferred position of striker, alongside Reid for the third game at Loughgall . It worked as in the 50th Phil knocked in the opening goal. Sadly though it didn’t last with the host equalizing again, leaving George still concerned over the strength of his defense.

Fort William’s defense received another boost with the signature of Scott McLean on a free transfer. The former Falkirk player signed a permanent contract this time around since being released in the summer. George was pretty content in the knowledge that at last he had a reasonable back line. It was now the attacking part that needed work on.

The final pre-season game at H&W Welders was a game of two halves as the cliché goes. The first half went well as Fort William scored thanks to an Alan Reid strike, whilst the second was less so with yet another lead conceded as the game ended all square. Chris MacKenzie called into action far too often for George’s liking.

On the 28th he was helped by learning that Keith Gibson had been released by Dundee allowed George to discuss terms with the midfielder, who fortunately was more than eager to repay the faith shown in him, only asking for moderate wages and prepared to commit for a few years.

Season 2003-2004 – Vying for Respectability

As per usual for George the month of August kicked off with a cup game to start the season and this time round it was a less than easy trip to Clydebank . No goalkeeper had yet been found who could replace Chris MacKenzie so for now, the Englishman was all he had available to him.

In a match which the hosts dominated for long periods it was a blow to lose Gary Smith midway through the first half with what looked a potentially nasty shin gash. As Fort William continued to warm up for the matches that actually meant something to George, the dismissal of Liam Keogh [/b] in the second half raised hopes that maybe the highland side would be able to pinch a win here, although Clydebank continued to dominate long after but just couldn’t score – eventually it went to penalties.

It was the first competitive shoot out George had been involved in with Fort William and he was actually enjoying the occasion. Whilst players and fans were tense, he was actually quite relaxed – win or lose he didn’t really care. Stone stepped up and scored the first goal, to the cheers of a select few, before the hosts missed theirs through Derek Ferguson.

Scores were soon exchanged with Fort William’s coming from Dickie, Moore and McAllister before the 5th round arrived. Leading 4-3 it was Craig Strachan’s turn to see if he could win it for the club, and George was actually quite excited – a cup win would at least please the board. The midfielder walked up, placed the ball on the spot, returned to a mark on the edge of the 18 yard line. He ran up, pulled back his left foot and fired a spectacular shot high into the roof of the net to send Fort William through and the loannee seemed thoroughly pleased with himself after that.

George’s week picked up immensely after that with the completed signature of Keith Gibson , the attack minded midfielder would add some needed quality on the right wing. He also learnt via BBC Scotland that the draw for the second round of the League Cup had been made, and it was an away tie against Premier League side Aberdeen! . Now George had no illusions of winning this one given the fast gulf in quality, but it really would be a chance for young Jamie McAllister to put one over on his old employers.

Before the League campaign commenced, George decided to keep a roster handy of his playing squad to hand just as basic way of seeing where improvements were needed. He used the blueprint found in the clubs Fanzine, Fortitude and what resulted looked a little like this:

Nb. Ratings according to those found in Daily Record. Also players Scottish unless otherwise stated.

Goalkeepers

Chris MacKenzie 31 years old, reliable shot stopper between the posts, arriving for a nominal fee from Nuneaton Borough. However, sadly none of his immediate relatives are Scottish, which means he has no long-term plans in this side. With no alternatives though he will be number one for the foreseeable future.

Fort William 02/03 30 starts, 40 conceded, 1 assist, 3 MoM, 7.00

Fort William Total 48 starts, 69 conceded, 1 assist, 6 MoM, 6.65 [/i]

Manager Overall Comments - As I look ahead to this season, I know that once again I will be needing Chris. At some point I have to bring in back up, and will consider any loanee’s available to me. Still – at least I can trust this guy for now.

Defenders

Gary Moore The young Scot has been adding depth to Fort William’s squad since arriving three years ago. What the 23 year old right back lacks in quality, he attempts to make up for in attitude. Long term future looks to be insecure as he barely cuts it at this level.

Fort William 02/03 5 Starts, 2 subs, 2 assists, 6.29

Fort William Total 22 starts, 10 subs, 3 assists, 6.00

Gary Smith . The experienced defender has played at the top level with Aberdeen. Failing to play at all in his stay at Hibs, he was released on a free in the summer of 2002, although not before picking up a serious injury that would sideline him for four months. Picked up by George when fit, he became an important member of the back line and he revels in the regular football he is receiving. Another injury against Clydebank though, could scupper his long term plans. Likely to be around for a couple more years yet though.

Fort William 02/03 12 starts, 4 subs, 1 MoM, 6.69

Fort William Total 13 starts, 4 subs, 1 MoM, 6.63

Bruce Morrison The 29 year old center half has been a regular in the Fort William defense since arriving from Peterhead, but with a certain amount of justification this can be said to only be because there has been a lack of alternatives. A disappointing campaign just ended, Bruce will need to improve if he is to maintain his spot, now that players have been brought in.

Fort William 02/03 25 starts, 1 sub, 1 goal, 5.92 [/i]

Fort William Total 59 starts, 2 subs, 1 goal, 1 MoM, 6.11

Mark Wilson the 21-year-old center back will likely be a regular in the side since arriving on a free from Dundee United. He struggled to make an impact at the SPL side but loans at Cowdenbeath and Dumbarton helped to improve his all round game and confidence. Much needed at Cameron Stadium where the back line has not enjoyed terrific success in the past 3 years.

Fort William Total 1 start, 7.00

Michael Stone This 24 year old defender enjoyed two loan spells last season with Fort William, as he struggled to make any headway with his English club, Doncaster. In the summer he decided against renewing his contract and made his way home to seek better fortunes. Once Fort William expressed an interest in securing him he signed straight away, although prelim talks had already been made whilst he had been at the club. A no nonsense made his dedication will be a key asset for the team this year.

Fort William 02/03 (2 loan spells ), 20 starts, 1 goal, 6.40

Fort William Total 21 starts, 1 goal, 6.57

Scott McLean Failing to make the grade at Falkirk, young Scott was only too happy to agree a permanent deal with Fort William in the summer, a side with whom he had enjoyed a loan spell the previous season. Capable of playing both at centre half and left back, his versatility and the pedigree gained from being coached at a higher level, will no doubt mean this 21 year old will make a big impression this coming season.

Fort William 02/03 ( loan ) 18 starts, 2 subs, 1 goal, 6.40

Fort William 18 starts, 2 subs, 1 goal, 6.40

Jamie McAllister The jewel in the back line during his numerous loan spells ( 4 in all with Fort William), make the former Aberdeen man a very welcome addition to the squad. The 24 year old is versatile enough to play on the left or in the centre in both defense and midfield, and his pace and nose grinding attitude are some of the qualities which have made him a fan favourite at Cameron Stadium. He will hopefully enjoy a successful season now he has at last a permanent contract.

Fort William 02/03 N/A

Fort William Total 50 starts, 1 sub, 2 goals, 6 assists, 1 MoM, 6.97

Ian Gardiner Early on in the 2001-2002 season, young Ian became the first product of the fledgling Soccer in the Community programme established by the club having successfully gained entry in the Football League. Now, aged 19, Ian will be hoping to make a decent stab at holding down a regular spot in the side, although many observers will note he will have to work very hard to do so.

Fort William 02/03 3 starts, 3 subs, 5.83

Fort William Total 9 starts, 8 subs, 1 goal, 6.18

Manager’s Overall Comments

It’s nice to feel as though I have a solid defense at last, although the right back area may need attention if Gary Smith continues to pick up injuries. I am delighted to have Jamie back with us and he’ll likely retain the left back position as fortunately we now have quite a bit of strength in depth with Wilson and McLean available, which will hopefully motivate Bruce into actually having to fight for his place. 7/10 overall.

Midfielders

Scott Steele The former Woking midfielder, has used his left foot to his advantage when it came to George trying to pick a balanced team, but he has performed reasonably consistently in his time at Fort William. At 31 though, doubts are raised as to how much he can improve. He is still likely to enjoy a good one or two seasons yet at Cameron Stadium, but the extent of his involvement is likely to recede in that time.

Fort William 02/03 12 starts, 2 subs, 5.93

Fort William Total 63 starts, 8 subs, 3 goals, 8 assists, 6.13

David Kerr The combatitive central midfielder has improved with age since his initial loan spells at the club, and feeling settled at a club has clearly had a beneficial effect on his performances. Last year he played a fairly big role for Fort William, as he saw partners come and go in succession, making it difficult for him to develop a partnership in the midfield. However he’s now learned to play his own game, and is able to adapt his play to whoever joins him in the midfield – a welcome bit of versatility in the squad and hopefully the 28 year old will go on to help push the club further up the table.

Fort William 02/03 23 starts, 6 subs, 1 goal, 3 assists, 6.41

Fort William Total 48 starts, 19 subs, 3 goals, 3 assists, 6.50

Keith Gibson The free signing in the summer was one that was most needed in the midfield. Someone with creativity and quality. The 22 year old never made it into Dundee’s line up, but impressive reserve performances painted the picture of a man who was low on confidence yet still talented. Hopefully he’ll be able to replicate some of these showings at his new club.

Fort William 02/03 N/A

Gordon Burns The wee midfielder has done an ok job at Fort William, without being particularly outstanding. Always having to cope with loan signings seemingly arriving every other week, the former Ayr man kept his head down and worked hard and it usually rewarded him with a run in the side. Likely to play a bigger role this season, but he needs to start adding a little more to the attacking aspect of his game.

Fort William 02/03 11 starts, 3 subs, 6.21

Fort William Total 22 starts, 5 subs, 6.45

Craig Strachan Loan Signing – May 04 This plucky 19 year old has found it hard to make any immediate headway at Montrose and so he’s decided to try and gain some match experience at Fort William. Unlike other loanees before him though e is here for the season, a level of consistency which will help the other players get used to his style of play. He will likely strt on the fringes again, but expect the trickster to be involved quite substantially as the season takes its toll.

Fort William 02/03 N/A

Fort William Total 1 start, 7.00

Alex Grace – the 29 year old leftie is on loan at Fort William until 23rd August, where he will be assessed further. The Dumbarton man at his age would clearly like regular football but a permanent move is still out of Fort William’s control.

Fort William 02/03 N/A

Fort William Total 4 starts, 1 sub, 6.00

Alan Brown on loan from Dumbarton until 23rd September. Another central midfielder eager to prove himself as the 21 year old has only featured very occasionally at his contracted club. However he will need to work hard if he is to earn an extension.

Fort William 02/03 N/A

Fort William Total 1 sub, 5.00

Michael Dickie on loan from Stirling until 16th November. The versatile midfielder joined up with the club during pre-season and put in some impressive performances, meaning he is likely to figure in his time with Fort William. He was initially signed for the right of midfielder and will now act as cover for Keith Gibson. However if he continues to play well he will be involved and hopefully his club will agree to an extension.

Manager’s Overall Comments

A light weight midfield highlighted by the number of loaned additions to the squad but I am hopeful that they can make for a better season at Cameron Stadium. I am very pleased to have both Gibson and Dickie available on the right as they have so far shown to be pretty decent. I feel the centre is well covered and I expect Kerr and Burns to lead the way their with the loaners very much biting at the heels whilst on the left we seem to be weakest, although I’ll continue to show faith in Steele for the time being.

Forwards

Gordon Durie signed midway through the 2002-2003 season, the experienced target man struggled to get a look in as he was kept out of the side by free scoring Leo Fortune West. The 37 year old rarely featured and when he did his age was evident. Not the man he used to be and again this season he is very much only going to be back up. It would be no surprise if he handed in a request or retired.

Fort William 02/03 12 starts,3 subs, 6.03

Fort William Total 12 starts, 3 subs 6.03

Alan Reid The 22 year old former Hibbee was a prized summer signing for the club. In his early years he had received plenty of deserved attention amongst the media for his raw promise shown in Scotland U18 and U20 matches, but unfortunately he could not make the grade at the time and went off in pursuit of regular first team football. A terrible injury left him out of action for 10 months at a time when he was clubless. Luckily George remembered him when he came back to fitness and he picked the lad up on a free transfer, where he regained his touch in the pre-season trip to Northern Ireland. Hopefully he’ll be able to show Hibs what they’re missing out on this year.

Fort William 02/03 N/A

Fort William Total 1 start, 6.00

Chris Hay The former Huddersfield target man has struggled since his arrival on a permanent basis. When he first came on loan he became a favourite with the locals for his aggressive approach up front which earned him a few goals. After an absence as he struggled to make any inroads at the English side, he released himself from his contract and renewed acquaintances with George at Fort William. Sadly though last season was a write off with no goals scored and niggling injuries keeping him from returning to the form he had shown before. A spate with coach Mark Whyte led to the forward demanding a move to a bigger club – which was agreed to but when you can’t score goals in division 3, there aren’t many clubs who are interested. Hopefully he can reverse his fortunes this season for the good of everyone.

Fort William 02/03 10 starts, 19 subs, 6.30

Fort William Total 38 starts, 20 subs, 9 goals, 4 assists, 1 MoM, 6.82

Phil Cannie The 26 year old forward arrived on a bosman the previous season from Clyde and he was expected to provide the firepower up front but sadly it didn’t work out that way as he struggled to make a name for himself. A request to leave to advance his career was denied but all the same the general feeling is that he still very unhappy at the club. However as with Chris Hay, he’ll have to perform for us first if he is to gain a transfer away from the club.

Fort William 02/03 9 starts, 8 subs, 1 goal, 1 assist 6.59

Fort William Total 10 starts, 8 subs, 1 goal, 1 assist 6.34

Manager’s Overall Comments : Bugger. Aside from Alan Reid, I am very very concerned at the lack of talent here. Gordon is past it and is only there to make up the numbers, whilst the other two wantaways couldn’t hit a cows arse with a banjo. If other clubs come in for them I’ll be only too pleased to tell them where they can go. I have to bring in at least one if not two people here.

After completing the squad evaluation, George prepared his side for a trip to East Stirling to kick off the league campaign. New signing Keith Gibson was on the bench as play started. The game turned out to be an even contest and a shared point brought no complaints from either manager. After Steven Hislop gave the home side a first half advantage, George brought on Gibson and he provided the outlet down the right which midway through the second half resulted in the leveler. Alan Reid picking out a spot perfectly to score on his league debut.

That point was followed with a trip to Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Scottish Challenge Cup 1st Round. Outclassed for much of the game it was no surprise Fort William lost 4-1 although they had actually taken the lead through Gordon Burns , who scored his first goal for the club in the process. That was at least one cup down, another fixture where injuries could now be avoided.

After the midweek cup exit, Fort William faced their first home tie of the season as they hosted Dumbarton. The effects of a midweek cup-tie sadly still showed as a sloppy opening allowed the visitors to take an early lead that they never relinquished. It wasn’t until the second half that the hosts got going but once again no-one was able to find the net, or even the general vicinity of the goal itself such was the quality of the strikes. A 1-0 loss and George felt that at least it would keep any hopes of an easy season away from the ground. Perhaps making decent starts the previous season had in some way been a bad thing.

Only 3 days later and it was back on the road, north this time to face Aberdeen in the league cup – a game George never expected to win. Once Eoin Jess scored early on it was never much of a contest and it was a relief to only lose 3-0. Still the experience was enjoyable at least, to cross paths with a club vastly superior to Fort William.

After that another Dumbarton reject arrived in the form of Christopher Smith . The unsettled striker needed some games and George was prepared to offer him that. He had a good enough boot on him and he was prepared to put in the work as well.

He went straight into the line up for the away clash against Arbroath in a game that saw mixed fortunes. After a poor first half in which Paul Brownlie had given the home side a [deserved] lead, Fort William fought back strongly and scored their own on 53 minutes through Jamie McAllister . Soon afterwards though bad news followed as Jamie departed injured, a bruised thigh that would keep him out for 2 weeks. However that news was sweetened by Scott McLean . The young defender showing the forwards how it should be done, popping up to score an 83rd minute winner as Fort William took home a 2-1 win.

Alex Grace departed after that, and George had no intention of pursuing that little adventure, whilst Willie MacDonald of Stranraer came in for a month. He added a slightly more defensive aspect to the midfield. His introduction to the side wasn’t the greatest as it came in a 3-0 defeat to Alloa , a game which had seen both sides even until the break, where a calamity of errors saw the game swing dramatically in the home sides favour.

The day was soured further by Scotland’s 2-1 defeat to Poland in the European Championship Qualifiers, making qualification highly improbable now as their fate depended on Poland slipping up and the Tartan Army defeating Italy in midweek – a tough match.

September

The month began with heart break as Scotland lost to Italy, losing all hope of qualifying and it was made all the worse by Poland’s surprise defeat to Israel too. Not wanting to be too bitter but George wanted England and Wales to join Scotland and Ireland in the failed heap.

That was followed up with a 1-0 home defeat to Forfar in a game they’d had plenty of chances to win. Scott McLean’s injury made the game even more of a disaster as it would sideline him for 10 days as he recovered from his knee injury. This also meant that Bruce Morrison also got pulled into the reckoning, a sign that weakness had clearly hit the squad.

After a succession of loan signings for various forwards failed, George and Fort William hosted Stranraer at Cameron Stadium in the league again, and in a very close contest George was relieved to come away with 3 points and get that first home win over with as soon as possible. Craig Strachan and Keith Gibson were the scorers, creating a 2-0 lead before the away side pulled one bag, ensuring a very tense finale, but thankfully Fort William held on and pushed on, back up the table.

The challenge of repeating that effort against Peterhead increased significantly with the dismissal of Michael Stone after 27 minutes. Despite attempting to hold on for as long as they could it was too much for the tiring home side who eventually succumbed 2-0.

After that George decided reluctantly to try and extend Alan Brown and William MacDonald’s contracts. Neither were particularly impressive before hand, but they weren’t so bad either. Plus they gave the other team members a rest when they were tired.

They arrived and were duly included in the side that very disappointingly could only manage a 0-0 draw at home to East Stirling . Fort William battered their goal with shot after shot but just couldn’t get one in the net. The following day saw Scott Sinclair arrive on loan from Stirling to boost the squad. He’s already turned out for Fort William before so hopefully he knows what is expected of him.

October

The month started with another home game, this time Fort William were hosting Berwick . After conceding an early goal it was pleasant to see the home side fight back and eventually after well over 12 months, Chris Hay scored with a header on the stroke of half time to even the match up. The second half continued with Fort William in control and as the game seemed to be heading for a bore draw, Michael Dickie proved his worth to the side by stroking home with 5 minutes to go handing the 3 points to George.

The only down side to his day was learning that all 3 of England Wales and Northern Ireland had all secured play off spots for Euro 2004. ‘Basatards had better lose in the play offs then,’ he thought maliciously to himself, whilst quietly celebrating in the local with a fine pint. Craig Brown, that useless muppet had at last been fired from his post as manager, prompting almost every Scottish manager to fire off an application. The rumours abounding that a foreigner could be given the role were too frightening to think about.

In a determined effort to bring in quality, George bombarded first division clubs Motherwell and St. Johnstone with demands for various players to come on loan, and although he was rejected several times, he decided to keep going until he brought the right men in. The net result of his burst was the capture of Ian Campbell from Brechin on a months loan. A Campbell. He’d have to do exceptionally well to warrant a longer stay here, as his father had told him in no uncertain terms on the phone that night.

The addition did not help prevent a 1-0 loss at Cowdenbeath though the following week even if the game was close, James Allan’s first half strike the technical difference between the two teams. Thereafter Alan Brown was sent back to Dumbarton not to return again with his performances at best mediocre.

Another bloody 1-0 loss followed against Dumbarton although George couldn’t complain too much, as the side played fricking crap yet again to leave the side near the bottom of division 3. Gordon Durie was soon sold after that game, the forward being of no benefit to the club so he sealed a 1,000 pound move to Stalybridge Celtic before October ended terribly as loan signing was bought by Stirling and George was looking once more at a small squad full of inept morons who couldn’t do the simple task of putting the ball in the back of the net.

November began with a terrible loss to Arbroath at home by two goals and George began to think of packing it in. This truly was taking the mick – not only that, but the players – the useless, talentless players, had the cheek to moan that the club was underachieving. The highest this club has finished 9th and now, lying 8th, Fort William is supposed to be underachieving. Hypocritical arseholes.

With that, George abandoned his Scottish only policy as being a waste of time. He needed to bring the club up to decent levels before he could even begin contemplating his dream. Reserve English players suddenly came back into consideration and scouting was broadened to include anywhere where realistic targets might be found. Sod the nationality, this club needed to go forward, and fast.

Ironically then, it was Finn Gillfillan arriving from East Fife who was bought for 5k. The Scot playing a holding role in midfield and was put in for his debut against Stranraer where Fort William surprisingly… lost. Again. 1-0. Again. Bollocks, thought George.

In the middle of the International play offs Fort William made mini waves in the media by appointing Englishman David Platt as player coach in a bid to reverse the flagging fortunes of the club.

He seemed to have some kind of at least morale boost on the club though as they managed to secure a decent 0-0 draw at Forfar . Pity the stupid twats up front can’t bury any of the chances provided to them though – George refused to believe that all the goalkeepers in Division 3 were “world class standard†as had been the lame excuse proffered by his front men.

That game had seen the advent of the defensive 3-5-2 policy with 2 holding players just above the back line of 3 centre halves. Two wingers creating the chances and a central midfielder acting as the go between, from defense to offense. The tactic was maintained for the home game against Alloa and was George happy about that or was he happy about that?!

The result was a 3-0 home victory to the shocked delight of many in attendance. Jamie McAllister got the ball rolling in the 37th minute, before a second arrived on the stroke of half time. Coincidentally it was also the second goal of the season for Alan Reid , and the players were strangely leaving the field with their heads held high for a change. Returning in the second half, fellow striker Chris Hay got in on the act as Fort William enjoyed a rare emphatic victory and stole the airwaves after their performance, which saw them move up to 7th in the table.

After another terrific display Chris MacKenzie broke the club’s record for Man of the Match Awards with his 5th of the season, beating Leo Fortune West. Willie MacDonald extended his loan deal afterwards in the run up to a tough trip away to Berwick.

The final monthly game away to Berwick had George tearing his hair out. A Scott Steele goal in the first half gave Fort William a deserved lead which they held until the 80th minute. Where they conceded twice. And lost. The insults came thick and fast after that match as George attempted to come to terms with what had just happened. A victory would have pushed the team closer to sixth, but instead they dropped to 8th.

December

The month started with various loaned players rejecting Fort William’s advances, before a trip to Alloa in the Scottish Cup. Keen to jump start some confidence, George kept a strong side for the tie, bringing in coach David Platt for his first game. It seemed to work as George was happy to come away with a 2-1 win. Keith Gibson opened the scoring before the home side leveled but after a clse second half affair, their was an air of complete satisfaction when Chris Smith scored the winning goal in the 89th minute.

The reward for that victory was a home game at last, with Dumbarton the side coming to visit. For now though the league became the immediate priority as attempts were made to bring in Stephen McPhee and Steve Whittaker in on loan. Coventry were too stubborn though to allow any progress to occur.

Later on saw the unexpected news that David Platt and Gary Smith were calling time on their careers at the end of the season. Gary had picked up another month long injury which was the final straw for the defender who wanted to lead a less stressful life, whilst David was happier to be a part of the coaching staff.

Loan bids were made to try and cover the squad during December but little progress was made. That built up to a tough away game against 2nd placed Peterhead and it was no surprise to see Fort William lose 2-0.

Another loss followed as December turned sour again. After initially taking the lead at East Stirling through Alan Reid the home side responded quickly and dominated taking a 2-1 lead. In the second half Micahel Dickie squared it up after 55 minutes but frailties returned in the 87th minute as Fort William shot themselves in the foot, leg chest and head to lose 4-2. Mark Wilson removed himself from action for 3 weeks after an awkward clash in that game. George renewed his subscription of Prozac.

Queen of the South’s manager was fired recently following a match fixing allegation, and George applied for the job. F**k Fort William for now he thought.

On New Years Eve, Fort William played host to Cowdenbeath as George sought to relieve some of the pressure on him. It was 0-0 until the 90th minute. When they scored to take the three points, leaving George on the verge of topping himself. He was not enjoying this consistent display of utterly crap footballing ability. He knew he had to take responisibilty for lack of progress as well but the board were getting more and more frustrated by the day. His manager lifespan at the club took the shape of a sand timer with it just gradually seeping away. As a break – he decided to go on holiday for a week or two and let Mark Whyte deal with this rubbish. He’d probably do a better job anyway

January

George returned to find a few extra people in the team. He himself had searched but these names had never come up? What was so special about Mark? He must have had contacts, but anyway in came Neil Reid in defense for 1 000 pounds from Montrose , and Jo Murphy a striker, on loan from Kingstonian, and Alex Grace and Matt Jones arrived on loan.

Defeat had arrived in the Cup to Dumbarton 2-1, as Joe Murphy scored, whilst defeat then arrived in a carbon copy fixture in the league. George took charge again and lost 2-0. What was the point he thought to himself. These guys were so bad he was never going to make it to the top. A quick glance at the table told him it was the same old story:

Desperate to bring in players, Martin Black a defender arrived from Montrose for 1,000 pounds whilst Aston Villa’s Gavin Melaugh arrived on a months loan. Ian Campbell soon returned on loan as did Steve Dickinson . The more the merrier thought George as he continued adding players during the short winter break. David White of Cowdenbeath arrived, as did Delton Francis of Nuneaton Borough as the squad grew further.

Eventually after the absence was over Fort William were back in action hosting Forfar and after a Matt Jones strike in the 4th minute, the side miraculously held on to win. They even created further chances as well whilst defending in a manner that could be described as half competent.

That win amazingly also managed to help clinch the bosman signing of Scott McLean from Morton . The out of favour 27-year-old striker choosing Fort William over Montrose. Sadly though the positive bubble burst following a catastrophic 3-1 home defeat to Stranraer – the away side being 3-0 inside 4 minutes. Fin Gilfillan scoring a consolation.

However despite that, George was relatively content. The anger had dissipated some what with wins picked up here and there, meaning there was something to work on for the remaining few months as the team strived for respectability. The rest of the month closed out with little else to worry about except the bizarre death threats he’d received from a few hundred outraged fans but the board had assured him he had nothing to be concerned about.

February

Joe Murphy and Alex Grace refused to extend their loan spells with Fort William, instead they seemed more appealed by the proposition of never turning out for their clubs at all allowing them to veg out and do nothing.

On the pitch slack defending cost Fort William again as they went 2-0 down early on to Arbroath and despite coming back strongly eventually succumbed 3-2 with goals coming from David Platt and David White . Michael Dickie twisted his ankle in the same game just to rub it in.

Fortunes took an upturn on the 14th though as Fort William traveled to what was becoming a favourite hunting ground at Alloa and came back with 3 handy points courtesy of a goal from Ian Campbell in the first half. George was feeling better and better as time went by now.

The only worrying things were renewing the monthly contracts every so often, with some clubs and players not content to renew the relationship further, although usually these tended to be players who had hardly figured in George’s plans in the short spell they had been there. David White though, was one player George wanted to keep on but the midfielder refused to come.

The problem of inconsistency continued with a 1-0 home defeat to Peterhead though as Fort William struggled to contain their opponents. Chances were created but the home side never really looked like threatening – and the game was made even worse when Jamie McAllister was taken off on a stretcher with a knee injury that would sideline him for 3 weeks – and at the final whistle the chants of Cameron Out began once more.

The final day of February say another home defeat, this time to East Stirling in a 2-1 score line, Ian Campbell scoring the consolation late in the second half and George’s irritation was returning.

March

The month began with another home loss, this time to 10th placed Berwick and George could feel the anger of many a fan breathing down his neck. They weren’t a happy bunch this lot and the miserable performance that afternoon only served to inflame the hatred.

Alan Reid took the mick immediately following the game by demanding a move to a bigger club. 3 goals in 31 starts and he supposedly deserved a move to a bigger club? George told him where he could stick that request. The forward got his own back though be stating his contract would not be up for renewal in the summer and he would be leaving the club on a bosman.

Respite arrived with an away trip to Cowdenbeath where a point was gained thanks to Jamie McAllister’s second half strike to level the scores. The game wasn’t a spectacular one but any point will do from George’s point of view.

Paperwork at the club brought no end of bad news. Contracts expiring, no desire to extend them from the respective players and clubs faxing a host of NO replies for more loanees. If George ever got out of this division he knew he’d rather top himself than return to it.

A trip to Dumbarton brought back the unhappy times as they were on the wrong end of a 4-2 scoreline, with Chris Hay and Alan Reid the only players making an impressions scoring two second half goals to give Fort William a chance. They’d have had more of a chance of course if the other players had bothered turning up.

The players did at least pull themselves together for the away game at Forfar where the threat of finishing bottom again seemed to inspire some of them to at least work hard during the game as they earned a 0-0 draw. Chris Hay saw his season effectively written off though as a clash of heads would mean at least 4 weeks out resting

April

The month began with a fiery board meeting in which George was slammed from almost every single member for not having improved the club much – threats about listening to the supporters were made and pretty much an ultimatum was issued, stand and deliver results or find another job. Oh dear.

Away to Stranraer was the next game – and a 2-1 defeat followed, with David Platt scoring the consolation. George was making plans for life after Frt William. They would be taken to the top – that was for sure but he might not be there for part of it. He had to get a job elsewhere to maintain his reputation – he’d even be atraitor and take a job in England if he had to – though God knows who would want him. As a tested he was waiting to see if he’d get any positive reaction from his application for the Reading job in England.

Either side of a 1-1 home draw with Arbroath , in which Keith Gibson had provided a 3rd minute lead, held until the 76th minute, George completed the bosman signings of Alex Grace , Steve Dickinson and Duncan Goodwin .

A defeat away to Cowdenbeath by a scoreline of 2-1 saw many very irate fans storm the pitch in protest. This was not good enough for them and so:

Fort William and Cameron Part Ways

After another season of struggle at the Cameron Stadium, Fort William have decided to release George Cameron from his role as manager of the Third Division Side with the club firmly rooted at the bottom of the table.

Although this season seemed to have shown some promise as the team began to score goals and were fighting it out for 6th and 7th, they never could find that elusive consistency, a factor that has plagued George’s time at the club. A press release did at least acknowledge his efforts:

“ It is a sad day for the club when we have had to lose George but the board felt it in the best interests of the club to find a manager who will be able to put this club on the right track.

However we would like to put on record our gratitude for the efforts that George has put into the club during his reign. He stabilized us and brought us some respectability as we held our own, and finishing 9th last season was the point in which everyone hoped things would pick up from.

Sadly they didn’t though and as the fans have made known recently, performances and results have not been to the standard we feel they are entitled to expect. We wish George every success in the future, but fort now we must concentrate on rebuilding the club and we look forward to announcing a successor as soon as possible.â€

Meanwhile for George Cameron the future looks bleak. Having been sacked from a club 10th in the Scottish Third Division – he will need to to play a patient game if he is to seek a return to football. He was unavailable for comment as we went to press, as he is believed to be taking some time off in the Highlands to recover from the stress of his job. We at the Herald hope he will make a come back some time in the near future.

A New Era

George’s summer was the least pleasant he’d experienced in a while, despite having no stress to concern. It was paradoxically the lack of stress which worried him. Jobless again and where was his next opportunity going to arrive from? Applications of the begging nature were fired off to Derby County in England in a vain hope and as the position continued to be vacant all summer, George began to fancy his chances, the season started and still there was no one at the helm.

Then on Thursday 16th September a job finally cropped up, in England, with Southport and his route into football commenced again in the English Conference. Still George knew that one day, he would return to lead a Scottish side to the championship. Fort William may not be a suitable option for a good while, but he had the chance to improve his reputation once more.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>

Fort William Win as Former Boss Finds Suitor

Another fine performance at the as yet unknown stadium helped secure a valuable 3 points for the highland side as they moved up to 6th position in the Scottish Third Division. Chris Hay was the goalscorer as Cowdenbeath were sent crashing, in front of a rejuvenated home crowd. Chris McLeod enjoying a slightly easier spell as rookie manager than his predecessor.

Elsewhere though former boss George Cameron has found employment once more, though it comes in the English Conference with Southport since Richard Logan’s dismissal 1 week ago. There had been concerns amongst his followers that he may not regain a place in the footballing world but it seems Southport are a team in need.

In a brief interview, he stated his goals and ambitions, which include a return to Scotland.

So George, how has life been since leaving Fort William, you must have had a relaxing holiday!?

Not as you might think, as I was desperate to get back into football as soon as possible. I was gutted to part ways with Fort William but it was evident I hadn’t progressed swiftly enough in the eyes of the hierarchy. Derby seemed pretty downbeat about my chances but I’m delighted to have this opportunity again relatively soon.

Of course. You once said that resurrecting Scottish football was your passion and that you wanted to achieve club and international success with a pure Scottish squad. Do you still have this desire?

I certainly do! Of course it will be put on the back burner whilst in England but I intend on achieving my goal no matter how long it takes. Now I know Southport fans might be wondering how loyal I am going to be to them but let me assure you, my reputation is still pretty poor up north and it would take an impressive long term spell here to win over doubters and I want to do that, for both this club and me personally. If an opportunity arises I would of course ensure this club carried on in capable hands after me, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, that may be a long while yet.

Thanks George, briefly then what are your immediate goals with Southport?

This season – avoid relegation and aim for a mid table finish, then I want to push us up onwards into the top half and maybe look at promotion within 2-3 years. Some may say that’s optimistic, but I am determined – remember I didn’t actually leave Fort William voluntarily. I am made of thick skin and have already learned many lessons in my experience.â€

George Cameron, manager of Southport speaking to Glen Nevin yesterday afternoon. In other news Forfar defeated Alloa Athletic 4-3 in a close game…

icon_biggrin.gif cheers guys. Well as it happens it hasn't taken me too long to get back to Scotland and it was nice to leave a job voluntarily this time ( though I suspect had I stayed much longer that would not have been the case icon_wink.gificon_frown.gif )

--

For the purposes of this challenge, I’ll only write short season reviews until I regain a job in Scotland again

Season 2004-2005 – Southport FC

Beginning with a glance at the table and the players, George had automatically been relieved to see their was talent, and undoubtedly enough to match the boards ambitions for the season – so there was less pressure involved but it was still no easy task as was shown in his first match at home with Scarborough that saw a late Danny Coles goal secure a 1-1 draw.

Early form proved to be quite irritating for George, wins arrived in cup competitions but a failure to score more than once a game in the league saw several games end up in infuriating draws and occasionally defeats. The early inconsistency, despite scattered with draws and victories saw the imposing board issue a word or two about the supposed shakiness of George’s reign to the Scot’s chagrin. Yet still the impatience continued as cup runs progressed and league form faltered.

As December progressed wins arrived in successive cup and league games which only served to infuriate the Southport board further. George began wondering if he’d actually been appointed to worsen the clubs plight, it was either that or the board were getting wind of George’s application to better sides in the league.

However George’s stay was to be a short one and thankfully voluntarily as one his many applications to move away from the club became successful – and to make matters even more satisfying it was a return to the Scottish Third Division – this time with Dumbarton after Tom Bennett moved to Ross County.

Questions were bound to be asked of George with the rivalry with Fort William called upon but George satisfied many of the home supporters by committing himself to the club in the long run. “ I want to achieve domestic success with a purely Scottish squad. I have always done and will strive to do so and although I was desperate to make it work out at Fort William, it didn’t work out sadly and I appreciate being given a second chance with Dumbarton where my dream has been reignited.â€

George though was less than pleased on his immediate arrival by train. His car had been petrol bombed by an exceptionally irate Southport Director with a warning of “return and die, Scottish B*stard!†scrawled in red paint on the side of his apartment. He certainly didn’t intend on returning to that hell hole any time soon.

His appointment had taken place at the end of January, making it difficult to assess the club directly even if a few of the squad were familiar. Alan Brown, Christopher Smith and Gary McDonald all were pleased to renew acquaintances with their former manager, the players now happier to be in a squad at least capable of competing at the right end of the table. That pleased George too – though it was ironic Fort William actually held 4th spot in the table after all.

Immediate moves were made to bring in some loan signings as George looked to bolster the squad. Generally the players seemed ok, better as a whole than Fort William and Southport, but there was still a lack of numbers and a few calls to Scottish and English clubs resulted in mixed fortunes. The plethora of rejections arrived reasonably swiftly as per usual but with the club’s established reputation more players were prepared to join.

The success’ saw Scott McNiven, a right back from Colchester, Steve Moran a right midfielder from Queen of the South, Charlie Griffin, a midfielder and attacker from Hayes, Kenny Deuchar, an offensive player, from Motherwell, Jamie Hughes, a striker from Rochdale, Leigh Hinds, a striker from Shrewsbury and Ritchie Hanlon a 26 year old midfielder, also from Rochdale join on a months work out. Extending his stay was Irish left back Pádhraig Staunton.

Before January concluded George was delighted to seal the bosman signing of Swindon striker Gary Alexander on a free – beating English Second Division side Carlisle to his signature. The talented front man should fit in well at Dumbarton.

February

The first match in George’s reign saw a home tie with Forfar who were sitting in 2nd place at the time. The reign started well with a 2-1 victory in a thoroughly enjoyable game of football, which made for an excellent advert of the Scottish Third Division. After Steven Ellis had put the away side into an 18th minute lead, the side responded quickly and Derek Barnes equalized within 3 minutes. In an open exchange of opportunities a goal was inevitable and fortunately it fell for the home side as experienced striker Martin Mooney scored what was to ultimately prove to be the match winning goal sliding home Warren Cummings , former Chelsea defender’s cross. The win also moved Dumbarton up into 4th spot and 5 points off the second automatic promotion spot.

George didn’t know what to make of his side’s prospects for the season. Promotion had not been mentioned in the pre-signing interview but he suspected it was on the minds of a few fans. After a grueling experience in Southport George recognized the benefits on gaining the approval of the fans soon and ultimately that 2nd spot was the target for the season, though he kept this to himself so as to keep expectations low.

The irony of George’s first away trip being at Fort William was not lost on many of the squad, especially those who had spent loan spells there. A determination to prove to any skeptics over George’s loyalty was evident and plans for a victory were organized. George couldn’t help but admit that a strange sensation surrounded him with After enduring a frosty reception the side struggled to contain an equaled impassioned home side and it was by a stroke of fortune that Craig Brittain scored the opening goal on the stroke of half time. It would have been sweet if the result had stayed like so for the 90 minutes, but football doesn’t always work that way and goals from David Kerr and then Michael Stone late on won it for the home side who admittedly deserved it after a final few minutes onslaught.

That disappointment followed over the following week with a 3-2 home defeat against 3rd placed Brechin severely denting the promotion hopes of many. Kenny Deuchar had provided the side with an early lead only for a poor defending before half time to allow the away side to take a 2-1 lead. Dumbarton drew level thanks to only for the defense to go awry in the final minute to the frustration of many.

February ended badly with an away defeat to Elgin City . Not helped by a smaller pool of players to choose from, as many of the loanees hadn’t officially confirmed their extension, a Mark Slythe break away goal on the half hour mark condemned Dumbarton to a 3rd straight defeat, not a scenario George was all too unfamiliar with.

March

More players returned on loan as George looked to solidify the defense and pick the side up having fallen to seventh in the table. It failed. In one of those “you shoot all frigging game but don’t score and they only have one chance but score game†George was left seething as defeat number 4 arrived in ignominious fashion.

Thereafter two defenders arrived on loan to immediate replace the numpty’s currently occupying the “keep strikers away†slot. Nuneaton’s pair of Gareth Dailly and Michael Ord handed the burden of improving the back line. Steven Sidwell , the Arsenal reject also agreed a bosman move, though again this would be one of those canceling at the last minute and hope he gets released scenarios in order to avoid compensation.

The rot then ended away to Berwick where Paddy Staunton helped secure a 1-1 draw, the defense performing miles better in this encounter, though conceding points after taking the lead again brought irritation to the Dumbarton manager. However the fury intensified after the 2-2 home draw with Alloa where twice through Kenny Deuchar the home side went ahead but defensive frailties let their opponents back in. Craig Brittain’s dismissal in the 63rd minute was no hope either as George wandered if he’d run over a few black cats recently.

A miserable away defeat to Cowdenbeath followed, 1-0, as although Dumbarton dominated their opponents the goals just refused to arrive to the intense anger of George – who was wondering if fate was following him around wherever the f**k he went. He hadn’t been helped by the fact that the loan signings had been unavailable whilst they considered extensions but even so the inability to score was poor. In a pique of rage George released useless forward Christopher Smith on a free transfer.

On a more depressing note George now saw that Fort William were 3rd in the table only 3 points behind first placed Arbroath. What was wrong with him? Scotland’s 4-0 mauling of Armenia was the only bright spot in a very depressing weekend of football.

April

After more loan signings returned George watched his side eek out a 1-1 draw with East Stirling with Paul McGrillen scoring the equalizing goal, before a shocker of an away match at Forfar had the fans up in arms at George’s less than brilliant start to his reign. Next match up? Hosting Fort William.

Facing a side battling for promotion was always tough and it was no surprise to see the home side flounder in a 2-1 home loss. Fort Willaim were by far the superior side and George was made only too aware of his inadequacies throughout the match. A Scott McLean brace condemned him yet again, with Craig Brittain sneaking a consolation just after half time.

George was feeling desperate now. Wherever he went, crapness followed. He’d done little with Fort William, was taking Southport nowhere and was now in the process of wrecking Dumbarton. He really needed to get his finger out, and maybe take a coaching course in the summer – should he survive that long obviously.

Fans soon picked up on his applications for Peterhead via a traitorous postman and chants were in full flow at Gayfield where Dumbarton were soundly defeated 4-0 by Arbroath , and goalkeeper John Hillcoat showed himself up to truly be one of the worst performers to have played under George.

On the 30th April, after a host of new loan signings arrived for the final few games George enjoyed some good fortune as he capitalized on one of those “one shot one goal winning gamesâ€. John Sharkey on loan from Sheffield Wednesday was the hero as he scored with 4 minutes remaining against Elgin City at Cliftonhill Stadium. The home fans stopped their anger temporarily to celebrate a most welcome win and George felt the pressure alleviate ever so slightly.

May

Saturday 7th and the final game of the season couldn’t come soon enough for George. It was the end of a tough year and he wanted to get a full pre-season behind him – if the club allowed him to stay on in the summer. A 2-0 defeat away to Brechin swiftly followed but at least it was over. Now to focus on rebuilding a squad fit to challenge. There were no excuses.

Elsewhere it took a late winner at Forfar to secure promotion for Forfar demoting Fort William solely on goal difference leaving George with highly ambivalent emotions. Jim MacLeod decided to move on a bosman in the summer too.

Lisbon Lions 2005-2006 Dumbarton

In the summer, George began an aggressive recruitment policy in attracting new signings, a gun to the head being the favoured option in certain instances, although even that failed with some players willing to call George’s bluff and reject his offer. Trips with scout Robert Gallie proved to be successful and they actually ended up recruiting some coaches in the process – rectifying a certain problem overlooked by George when he had first arrived. Derek O’Neill and Peter Thompson joining the clan.

2005-2006 Dumbarton’s Push

Squad Overview

Goalkeepers

John Hillcoat The 34 year old Scot was only kept on as goalkeeper this due to a lack of squad depth in this area. After struggling massively the previous year which had seen him ship 67 goals in 36 appearances, he will need to improve if Dumbarton are to enjoy a more successful year.

Martyn Margetson 33 The Welshman arrived from Cheltenham after failing to make any inroads into the side. Always as cover he should relish this chance for first team action, early showings putting him way above John in the ability stakes.

Matthew Glennon (loan) 29 The Brechin goalkeeper was reunited with his former boss in the middle of June on a loan spell until October to provide cover for John Hillcoat whilst George searches for a more competent man between the sticks. The relationship at Fort William helped sway the deal but this definitely not a move with the intention of going permanent later on.

Defenders

Warren Cummings 24,DLC[ This left back arrived from top flight English side Chelsea 2 seasons ago on a free transfer and he has proved to be an assured signing. The high caliber of coaching shone through in his debut season and he certainly performed above average in the second season during which George took control. Will be important again this season.

James Cunningham 26 D/MR The right back has played consistently since arriving on a free 2 years ago, spotted playing for a local pub side. However he is not the most gifted of players and it is only a lack of alternatives that has seen this man turn out so often for Dumbarton. George only used him sparingly upon arriving last year, opting for loanee’s instead.

Jim McLeod 22 DRC Jim never made any impact at St. Johnstone and only became known to other clubs via repetitive loan spells throughout his teenage years. After a spell at Alloa last season, he was released on a free transfer, and George decided to pick him up as the boy did have at least some qualities that could be worked upon.

Craig Brittain 31 DC Craig has a long relationship with George stretching back to the numerous loan deals whilst at Fort William and the centre back will continue to play a role at Dumbarton. Numbers are short and the old man can do the job required. By no means spectacular, but just enough to leave the midfielders confident.

Kyle Sheppard 24 DR The hard working right back arrived on a bosman from Bristol City having failed to make any inroads at the English club. However, noted for his eagerness to play and his preparedness to learn, George will hope that Kyle will become a valuable asset for the club’s drive for promotion.

Padhraig Staunton (loan) 24 D/DMLC The Irish left back from Motherwell spent much of the previous season on loan at Dumbarton and it was no surprise to see George bring him in again to provide cover, at least until November where he would be assessed. He never made it at the First Division side.

Peter Sharp (loan) 24 D/DMLR The wing back arrived on loan the same day as the Irishman, from English side Kidderminster Harriers. Capable of playing on either flank, again he would be providing options for the team. Only on loan for a month, during pre-season and the early games to assess his usefulness.

Wayne Purser (loan) 25 DL Another loanee – the out and out left back is here until November from Barnet, covering for injuries and suspensions.

John Williamson (loan) DC The dependable centre half had plenty of admirable facets to his game, but just didn’t have quite enough to get into the Burnley side and he relished the opportunity for some action in Scotland. Around until November, George will hope he has the ability to help protect Margo from opposing forwards.

Midfielders

Bernard Diomede 31 FL The signing that shocked a few of the side’s faithful followers arrived early on in June when George completed the signing of former Liverpool and French international Diomede on a free transfer, the player signing a 2 year deal. Hopefully his creative spark will prove to be the difference.

Alan Brown 22 MC Another former Fort William player, albeit via a loan, Alan also knows George quite well and he will be hoping that success on the field will be considerably better than previously. Recently instated in the first team at Dumbarton after a tough beginning, he should improve in the coming season with regular football. Not a creative genius though.

Graeme Donald 31 MC Former East Fife midfielder Graeme arrived on a bosman signing in the summer as George looked for an experienced man in the middle. The former Hibs player has made frequent appearances in the lower league so knows what is to be expected and hopefully will be able to contribute to George’s quest to move out of the league.

Kevin Graham 18 MRC This young hopeful has been around 3 years now since joining from the youth academy and has made a positive impression at the club and in the past season made a string of fine performances, but like everyone else at the club his form dipped when George arrived. Still at his age he as the potential to do very well for the club, if he doesn’t decide he wants better that is.

Michael O’Donnell 16 MR Another very young player who has impressed all and sundry at Dumbarton. A talented crosser and a good brain to boot will make him a useful asset to the side. He’s already played a fair few games for the club and hopefully a burn out can be avoided by using him sensibly.

James McFadden 21 MC The former Motherwell youngster never hit the heights that were once predicted for him and he failed to establish himself in the first team, instead spending much of the previous season on loan at Clydebank. George snapped him up on a free transfer after he’d been released by his club in June.

Derek Barnes 27 AM/FR The attacker has proved to be useful member of Dumbarton’s squad and he seems content to continue to play in a sparing role. Not outstanding talent wise but makes up the numbers competently.

Brian McGinty AMC 28 The long serving Dumbarton player has played a consistently important role in providing, creating and scoring goals for Dumbarton in the past few years. Last season was his best performance in consistency terms as he played a solid game all season long, chipping in with 5 goals too.

Steven Milne 22 D/DMC The former Chelsea reserve joined George after being released from his contract. A talented player with a strong preference for doing the defensive work his extra bit of quality coaching will hopefully be able to add more bite to either the back line or in the middle of the field.

Forwards

Gary McDonald 34 FC The forward has also spent a spell on loan at Fort William before with George and so the two knew each other reasonably well and George knows he only has a very average player on his hands. He’s able to a job up front and can shake defenses up a little but he’ll never be an out an out goal getter and with better options he would likely not be involved at all.

Martin Mooney 34 S The experienced striker has been a regular in the side for 5 years now, though 30 goals in 157 appearances does not suggest prolificacy, and at 34 his role is likely to be reduced to a supporting or back up role. Experience could prove to be useful, especially on the training ground.

Paul McGrillen 33 FLC Last season’s fans player of the year has also given everything to helping Dumbarton since joining on a free from Partick Thistle a few years ago. Not a natural goal scorere his main threat comes from supplying the opportunities and chipping in with a smattering each year. George would like to see Paul be a little more selfish though and try and score more than he does.

Gary Alexander 25 S This talented front man was a mini coup for George when persuaded the Swindon reject to make his way north of the border to join the Dumbies. A fine finisher in front of goal, a falling out with Andy King was said to be the reason for his downfall in England. A lot will be expected of the individual who it must be said is probably vying for a bigger move. Hopefully he’ll earn it.

Wayne Gray 25 FC The bosman signing from Dover has a lot to prove for George who took a gamble on the eagerness of young Wayne paying off. Failing to make the grade with hid former club, loan spells saw occasional flurries of goals and a hint of the talent that had inspired Dover to pick him up in the first place. It will be up to George to get that out of the boy over the coming year.

Pre Season

During a spell of fiercely attempting to bring in all and sundry George also had on the pitch games to contend with. A 1-0 loss to Peterhead started, followed by a carbon copy scoreline against Atherstone Town of the English Conference, though John Hillcoat did save a penalty. A Jim MacLeod goal saw the spoils shared at Bromsgrove Rovers 1-1, before George finally secured a half decent keeper in Margetson.

Gary McDonald then decided to miss much of the upcoming season by getting himself run over by a car, which resulted in, amongst other things, a slipped disc – and 7 months of full recuperation in order – not that George was particularly bothered by that – he added little up front anyway. A poor 1-0 defeat at Bognor Regis was hardly a positive indicator of the season to come, befor Colin Miller elected to sit around in the doldrums rather than have a trial with Dumbarton.

Another loan signing did arrive, in the form of central defender John Williamson from Burnley before the race began to try and sign recently released Arsenal youngster Steven Sidwell . That was the focus before another drab friendly defeat, unfortunately arranged to be played AT Southport. A 2-0 loss and many vitriolic chants from the home supporters, ensured a speedy getaway for George. What an excellent way to prepare for the new season.

Season 2005-2006

The new campaign began playing a new 4132 formation with Milne as the holding player. Challenge Cup defeat away to East Stirling ended one competition early on, although it was only on penalties after Wayne Gray had forced extra time with a second half leveler as July ended.

Stephen Cooke joined early on on a free transfer to add another option to the midfield as George looked for a brighter season in the Scottish Third. A full season with Dumbarton and he looked to target a top 5 finish, well above the board’s hopes of simple improvement of the squad as a whole.

August continued with the signing of trialist David Wood , a defender and striker, before he promptly joined Warren Cummings on the sidelines injured. Another trialist Stephen O’Brian joined later on too, adding to the midfield contingent, whilst John Sharkey arrived on loan from Sheffield Wednesday making an immediate impression scoring both goals in Dumbarton’s opening home win versus Clydebank that saw them take top spot in the table – a fact George was only too keen to savour for longer.

Defeat in the league cup followed soon after as George mixed the team around allowing him to focus fully on the job at hand. In fact the irrelevance of the match saw only 244 followers bother attending the game. Peter Sharp extended his loan whilst Irishman Sean Paddy joined on a free transfer after impressing in a scrimmage.

League form carried on positively though with a point scraped away to Stenhousemuir thanks to McFadden, and another home victory against East Stirling courtesy of John Sharkey, satisfying supporters anxiety, though if anything Dumbarton should have scored more against East Stirling.

The big downside to August was that injuries were unending. All the strikers suffered blows forcing loans to be made, with Michael Jackson from Neverne- err I mean Clyde, and Martin Griffin from Queen of the South coming in. The loss of Steve Milne for two weeks was the one that George was really unhappy about though, especially as his failure to capture Sidwell meant he was short in the holding role.

The final game saw the first return to Fort William of the new campaign, and in a typically entertaining match that saw chances a plenty at both ends, the final score ended up being 0-0 although George wasn’t displeased with that as he had been without a couple of key players and they had been holding on towards the end. The point also put the Dumbies on top of the table at the end of the month, and George felt a whole new emotion sweep over him – fans were chanting his name at the end of the last game – it was incredible.

Come award time and it was delightful for George to see two of his players pick up awards in the categories. John Sharkey won overall Player of the Month with 3 goals in 4 games, whilst Young Player of the Year went to James McFadden for his goal and general fine play that has helped propel Dumbarton to the top of the table, even if Elgin regained it on goal difference later on.

Into September rolled Dumbarton and a home clash with Alloa started it and eventually Gary Alexander scored his first goal for the club in the 85th minute. Fortunately it was also the only goal of the game. He had by no means performed badly up until then but it was a relief for George to see his front man get a goal at last. The day became even more joyous as Scotland defeated Norway, top of the World Cup Qualifying Table as they leaped over Israel into second place. Until the return leg in midweek, which Scotland lsot 3-2 – ensuring a nailbiting final round of games would follow:

Sadly that was followed with the first defeat of the league campaign at Elgin in a game where slack defending was punished. After John Sharkey had given Dumbarton a lead, poor marking allowed Mark Slythe to score two in first half injury time to turn the game around. Despite several chances to level the game was finished in the 90th minute when Jonathan Mitchell scored again. A disappointing week then, but for George the team were still playing well and were still in third.

Then they lost to Brechin at home and alarm bells rang again. The 2-0 loss was abysmal and had the fans booing throughout. Players were given strict warnings about future conduct on the pitch, which were duly accepted. Annoyingly the game also happened when George switched from a 4312 formation to 4132. Thereafter a 0-0 draw at Clydebank followed, George satisfied to at least have returned a little solidness in defense, even if chances went a-begging.

October soon followed and what a way to start it with a 4-2 home victory over Cowdenbeath. Easily one of the most exhilarating games seen at Cliftonhill, the fans had their pulses racing and George almost suffered a heart attack.

Sharkey set it in motion, only for them to level 3 minutes later. Dumbarton responded and Gary Alexander scored just before the break to renew the advantage. Afterwards, they equalized again before Padhraig Staunton was almost sent off immediately after, instead escaping – at which point George subbed him whilst on a yellow. Sharkey then scored 1 minute later to send the fans into delight before Gary Alexander sealed the points with 8 minutes remaining and a sigh of relief went around the ground as the home side returned to second spot in the table.

It was important from George’s point of view that goals came from other sources than Sharkey who was of course only on loan for another month. Hopefully it would be extended, but his fine form might, not surprisingly, convince his current employers to give him a second chance.

On the 8th Scotland played host to Armenia needing to win to keep their hopes alive. Because of the permutations of the table, Spain and Israel would also need to draw to allow Scotland to nick second spot. After 45 minutes Scotland were 3-1 up but Spain were winning too. They won 4-2 but Spain won as well and it was another major heartache for the Scots as they finished third. On the 11th David Moyes was sacked and the national debate was re-ignited amongst the papers. George made an impassioned plea in the Record, announcing his candidacy.

George showed his tactical nouse the following week as his side lost 2-1 to Berwick. An own goal had given Dumbarton a 67th minute lead but 2 goals in the final 5 minutes won it for the home side to the anger of Mr. Cameron. However on the balance of play the result was perfectly fair, and Dumbarton were still in 4th position.

The following week though saw George at last defeat his old club, winning 1-0 by virtue of that man again John Sharkey. The game was less tense than previous encounters as Dumbarton were in control but the result was still very pleasing as they leapfrogged their opponents into 3rd place in the table. It was followed up with a tough point at Alloa, a game that finished 0-0.

November saw one award this time, no guesses who – John Sharkey winning it for another superb display. George was desperately hoping he’d be able to renew the loan spell and beat off competition that would surely follow, before he realized the loan was in fact until December, giving him some more breathing space.

However that did not stop him adding numbers to the side and Danny Schepple of Birmingham was added to the ranks. The 24 year old Welshman was highly talented but for some reason was not figuring at The Porndrome and he relished the opportunity for some regular football. With his contract up in the summer, George had eyes on a permanent deal being secured if all went well.

The opening game was a chance to see what Schepple was all about and he certainly started well scoring inside 10 minutes and being instrumental in helping John Williamson score 20 minutes later. Isaac English responded for Stenhousemuir before Gary Alexander restored the 2-goal advantage. As the game seemed to be dying out in the final few minutes, Schepple popped up to score a second goal, no doubt arousing interest in his wares to make it 4-1, another welcome win.

It was followed up with another win away at East Stirling, as Gary Alexander put in a man of the match performance and scoring the winning goal in 34 seconds. The game was also watched by prospective new signing, Roberto Martinez the experienced midfielder impressed with what he saw signed the next day.

George’s day improved as he was able to persuade Burnley to let them keep John Williamson until March and Padhraig agreed to return again. The results then continued to keep the fans happy as a 2-0 home victory over Elgin followed. Sharkey and Schepple were the goal scorers and for some reason the them song to the children’s show “Sharkey and George, Crime busters Of The Sea!†came to mind, except with net busters and Schepple replacing their respective words of course.

As a result it was nice to read several pieces of positive press in the papers and on local radio and television as well. The good run had placated the fans who were now more than prepared to give George his credit for making a good start this year. It was as George maintained, much more beneficial to have had a pre-season under his belt which had given him time to mould his own side. The only worry on George’s mind was on why in the world were the English Second Division Fixtures, Results and So Forth continually brought to his attention, be it by fax, post or email. He couldn’t avoid it.

An excellent November ended with a first away victory of the season at Cowdenbeath, 3-1 with Schepple grabbing his 4th in as many games, before James Allan tied it up from the penalty spot. After half time Steve Milne restored the lead with a fine drive from the edge of the area, before Padhraig Staunton rifled in an effort in the 90th minute to secure the points, and keep Dumbarton in their lofty second position, ahead of Fort William.

December began with bids offered for various players recommended by Robert Gallie, back from his window shpping spree across most of the central European Countries. The next bit of good news came from the SFA as George was recognized for his efforts with a Manager of the Month Award, which went hand in hand with a Player of the Month Award for forward Gary Alexander who’d upped his efforts a little and been rewarded. The club and fans were understandably happy.

Next up to be demolished by George’s Neopolitan Army ( one day it would be Tartan icon_mad.gif ) were Berwick who lost 3-0. Another 2 goals from Sharkey ( taking his tally to 10 in 17 games! ) and one from Wayne Gray in the second half pushed Dumbarton temporarily up to 1st place in the league. Wayne deserved his goal after a few weeks of plugging away without success. The subsequent drive back to his flat brought a smile to George’s face. It was a national radio phone in, and the subject in question? The talented Mr Cameron!

Portuguese wing back Emmanuel [ then joined the clan as George completely abandoned the Scottish only policy rule. Getting to the SPL in the first place became much more important to George, the rebuilding could begin then before the honours arrived. To counter the possible loss of Sharkey, George picked up a Spaniard who could take over the mantle of goal scorer and supplier, in José Cano before Artur came in as cover and challenger to Steve.

George now had quite the squad available to him, almost too large and he knew that many contracts would not be renewed in the summer. Pleasing John Sharkey was allowed to continue his one man plundering of the Scottish Third Division, at least until mid April, when hopefully the damage will have been done.

With a long break in December until the next game, there was Annual Retirement Week in full flow and for Dumbarton there were two men opting for another life. Stephen O’Brien at 32 wanted to go to University and become a lecturer after failing to win a regular spot in the Dumbarton side, whilst age had also caught up with Paul McGrillen who was taking some time off to assess his options. Neither will be sorely missed.

The away tie to Brechin saw a mix of new faces interchanged but sadly they only contrived to end Dumbarton’s good spell as the side lost 1-0. It seems not all of them were running on the same wavelength, causing George to worry if he had now overmeddled with the side, plus he was still being bombarded with useless information concerning the English leagues? Was it his spell at Southport that had brought on such irrelevancies? He didn’t know. On the positive though, youngster O’Donnell committed himself to the club despite not appearing too often this year.

Before the home match against the Bankies, Ian Duerden of Cheltenham arrived on loan for a month to keep the forwards on their toes. The value of his moves in the transfer market became all too evident against Clydebank the side sitting in third spot and 6 points behind before the game. After Forbes put them ahead from the penalty spot, Ian Duerden immediately leveled on his debut with a spectacular header before Artur came on as a substitute to replace the injured Steve Milne. It wasn’t serious but the importance was clear. After the interval Padhraig Staunton latched onto a Cano pass to score the winning goal, which momentarily returned George’s men to the top.

With his contract expiring, Matthew Glennon was offered a permanent 1 year deal for the summer, despite rarely figuring in the campaign so far. It was indicative of his loathing for Brechin that he agreed almost instantaneously. Other deals were also agreed for fellow loanee Peter Sharpe from Kidderminster, Billy Melvin from Darlington and Michel Kuipers from Hayes. Wayne Purser was also set to commit to the club, with the board’s frantic “What about the f**king wages George?!!†still ringing in his ears.

The year ended with the Scottish Cup Second Round and a trip to Clyde on New Years Eve. The team performed creditably to secure a 0-0 draw though Warren Cummings was injured in the process. That aside the night was enjoyed by all relatively soberly, and George was able to reflect on an extraordinary year that had seem him start it struggling at bloody Southport before the fiery introduction at Dumbarton. A summer behind him though and the team was performing beyond expectations, but George felt hopeful the run could be maintained. It would need hard work, their away record was pretty hit n miss but the quality and depth was there. Promotion was on.

The New Year saw a return to Fort William in a tough top of the table clash. The result was not happy viewing for George as he saw his men crash 3-1 to an inspired home team. Gary Alexander’s first half equalizer seemed to have given Dumbarton some hope but it was not to be and the gap was cut to 4 points.

Steven Milne declared himself fit after that game but was still not risked for the Cup replay in midweek. Many changes were made to the side as George began prioritizing for the league. Many fringe players came in and did a decent job and were unlucky to lose 2-0 in the end. On the brighter side though, Danny Schepple decided to sign a pre-contract agreement to join in the summer on a permanent deal, to the delight of many Dumbarton followers.

The side returned to winning ways in spectacular fashion trouncing Alloa 5-2 in the league, despite twice losing the lead. Sharkey started the ball rolling, before the scores were tied again only for Ian Duerden to retake the advantage for Dumbarton. Alloa scored again just after half time, before Margo was injured in a clash of heads, and then Sharkey scored his second to put the home side up and from there it was one way. Gary Alexander added a fourth with 20 minutes remaining and Ian Duerden popped up at the end with a second goal in his penultimate appearance before his loan spell ended. The downer from this game was the injury to Martyn, who’d miss a month of action, meaning John Hillcoat actually might get near the first team for a while, something which had many fans worrying about the results that might befall them.

The wins continued as Ian Duerden gave a fine performance in his final appearance, helping to set up the only goal of the game converted by John Sharkey once more, in the second half. The Cheltenham striker could not return though, having agreed a permanent deal for the summer already with Chesterfield.

After a break for Scottish Cup action, Dumbarton were playing in the league again, hosting struggling East Stirling. Though Wayne Cummings missed a 5th minute penalty the 3 points were secured in the second half thanks to a brace from José Cano, the Spaniard making a deserved start, replacing John Sharkey in midfield.

The next game saw a table topping clash with Elgin City, on their turf and in games like these taking your chances are vital. Sadly for Dumbarton they couldn’t convert and a Jonathan Mitchell strike midway through the second half was enough to hand the 3 points to Elgin as they now lay 4 points behind top spot and 4 points above 3rd.

It turned out to be a blip though fortunately as 3 points returned with the visit of Cowdenbeath to Cliftonhill. It did take until the 68th minute to get a breakthrough and even that was a penalty, converted by Cummings but the win was welcome as Sharkey added a bit of gloss to the score line with seconds remaining.

Thereafter also saw the return of Margy to action, which co-incided with the ending of Matt Glennon’s loan spell, fortunately ensuring Hillcoat remained reserve keeper. Sometimes George thought he was harsh on the old man but 1 start, 1 sub and 4 conceded told another story, well sort of. Arriving in February was young 16 year old English starlet Mark Elliot . A centre back who’d been through all the top academies, he was tipped to have a decent career, so George tied him up on a ludicrous contract for the next 5 years creating either – a profitable sale, or a valuable addition to his back line.

The end of the month saw something of an off game as Dumbarton lost 1-0 at Berwick in a game where several of the players underperformed. However, despite that George was still relaxed, the side were surpassing many people’s expectations already and promotion was a strong possibility. As the end of the season drew near, George was desperate to pick up points soon.

As March dawned, Danny Schepple returned to Small Heath where he’ll remain until the summer, having already proven his value to Dumbarton before, and it also creates a chance for Cano to prove himself. Proving though that there was squad depth here, Dumbarton defeated Brechin 3-1 with 2 from Sharkey and a well taken goal from Roberto Martinez ensuring the pressure was piled on Elgin City, who won away at 3rd placed Fort William, a blessing in disguise.

By the next week the end of the season appeared clearer in George’s eyes. A disappointing 2-1 loss away to Clydebank, with Sharkey briefly leveling, went hand in hand with a victory for Elgin and defeat for Fort William. It set the table up thus:

With 8 games to go, there were still 24 points up for grabs, but 2nd seemed to be the likely outcome – which would of course be a brilliant finish, getting promotion inside a season. In responding to George’s plea to finish the season strongly, Dumbarton eeked out a blank draw at home to Stenhousemuir as they dropped points at home for only the second time all season. As a way of making up for that, victory was gained at East Stirling though not without a scare as Paul Robertson had handed the hosts a first half lead, which seemed unbreakable until Roberto Martinez arrived at the back post to nod home a McGinty cross. With 20 minutes remaining the tide turned and Dumbarton piled on the pressure, which eventually paid off via John Sharkey – the talented midfielder volleying from 12 yards in the 88th minute, to relieve George’s slight fears.

The beginning of April saw John Sharkey presented with a Player of the Month Award awarded on the pitch before Dumbarton hosted challengers Fort William. With 6 games remaining and 8 points the difference, victory would help put promotion within touching distance. It duly arrived thanks to a solitary goal from Sharkey yet again in his last appearance before the second loan spell ended, and George would be contacting Sheffield Wednesday to get it extended for the final month. Elgin meanwhile, surprisingly lost at home meaning there might still be a trophy to play for yet, though with 5 games remaining it would still take some screwing up by Elgin for George to capitalize. They were 6 points ahead and were officially promoted after Fort William had lost to Dumbarton – would they have the energy to continue now?

The following week, with Sharkey available for the final month of the season, Dumbarton traveled to Alloa to try and put the pressure on. A Craig Brittain goal midway through the first half, seemed to halt the host’s temporary optimisim and after a spate of substitutions towards the end of the match, Sharkey tied up the result with a well taken free kick. Unfortunately both Elgin and Fort William clinched last minute victories in their respective ties too.

Unsurprisingly as the media began to big up all the promotion and relegation battles across the land, the following week’s tie between Dumbarton and Elgin City at Cliftonhill was marked as a big one. A loss wouldn’t technically seal it for Elgin but a 9 point gap with 3 games thereafter would involve a miraculous set of results to clinch the title. To the disappointment of the home fans only a draw resulted. Though George personally was fairly satisfied with it given the circumstances. Sharkey had opened the scoring before Graeme Love replied 20 minutes later before the interval. In the second half events seemed to tilt in Elgin’s favour. Artur was stretchered off injured, whilst Crain Brittain managed to get himself sent off for a wild lunge on Jonathan Mitchell that almost provoked a 20 man brawl had the officials not stepped in and dealt with it quickly. Of course Fort William had also won meaning promotion celebrations had to be put on ice, whilst many now accepted the likelihood of remaining second after a brief hope of challenging for the title.

Still the celebrations were able to begin in earnest the following week after a hard fought 2-1 victory over Brechin, the side that along with Elgin had proved most obstinate for George. John Sharkey has scored immediately before an equally instantaneous response brought the scores level. Deep into first half injury time the mercurial midfielder popped up yet again to bag his 23rd league goal and 10th man of the match award of the season, and if it was available to him I’m sure he would have collected the fans player of the year award too at that time. The chanting began in earnest before the match was over and George fretted over them tempting fate but the final whistle did blow and promotion was secure!

The board were thrilled to pieces, announcing they had never doubted George’s ability ( damn liars ) and were looking forward to the challenge ahead in the coming season. George wanted to see out the current one first though. 2 games, remained, 6 points between them and Elgin, who held a +1 superior goal difference. While there’s a chance you always keep plugging away.

The final home game of the season saw the largest crowd attendance too as the locals came out in force to cheer their heroes on for one last hurrah. They didn’t expect to catch Elgin and at half time as Elgin’s 2-0 lead at East Stirling was announced over the PA, the crowd to their credit cheered even louder to push the Dumbie’s on. Sharkey scored moments after the interval with a spectacular half volley from 35 yards, and from then on it was samba time. George didn’t know what to feel. After 5 seasons of drudgery at the wrong end of the table – he’d finally won promotion. He’d got it right, the fans were chanting his name and looking round he saw what he hoped would be his home for the next few years. The final whistle, blew, the lap of honour began, the hugs of congratulations arrived from the coaches, players and worryingly, deranged supporters – but what the hell – they were ecstatic.

It actually turned out East Stirling had put up quite the fight, turning a 4-0 loss after 60 minutes into an eventually 4-3 loss but George didn’t worry about that. The final game at Cowdenbeath was going to be one for the fringe players, and a last farewell for those retiring or probably leaving in the summer. In a small way, they had been a part of this fine season too. Before that though George was touched when on the training ground ahead of the final game, the players demanded to see him in his office, with George thoroughly confused. With everyone packed into the small unit, Gary Alexander, club captain, and John Sharkey, star player, produced two awards. One was the SFA’s Manager of the Month Award for April, and the other was one from the lads, who’d had a wee whip round and bought a small yet highly significant trophy depicting two men, one striking the ball, the other a manager on the sidelines, left arm raised, face appearing to scream instructions.

It was a touching gift and one that George would treasure for a while afterward. On the final day then, several changes were made to the line up with players like o’Brien, O’Donnell, Cooke, Hillcoat and McGrillen amongst others making returns to the line ups. In a fixture that resembled more of a friendly in terms of aggression on the pitch, Dumbarton took the lead in the 43rd minute through youngster Cooke, played in even younger colleague Michael O’Donnell. It would have been to nice to end the game with a victory but a goal in the 84th minute put paid to that and a draw was the end result and a pleasing end to an absolutely terrific season.

The end pf the season saw quite a few Dumbarton players leave for pastures new. Martin Mooney and Stephen Cooke were released, with Paul McGrillen and Stephen O’Brien hanging their boots up. John Hillcoat was moved to Montrose on a bosman, to no-one’s despair, whilst all the loanee players returned to their respective clubs. George began praying fervently, Sheffield Wednesday wouldn’t want Sharkey with them the following season.

May continued with various contracts offered to staff and players alike, before George was told he was the runner up for Manager of the Year, unsurprisingly behind Jimmy Brown of Elgin. An achievement still to be proud of though, as was the announcement that Martyn Margetson, Kyle Sheppard and John Sharkey were all members of the Division 3 Team of the Year. A credit to all 3.

Pre Season 2006-2007

The summer had been an arduous one for George, continuously on the look out for new players to freshen up the squad, whilst maintaining a passing interest in the World Cup in Germany, a tournament that had seen many surprising participants such as Wales, Iran Angola, Zambia and Canada appear for the first team in a long while, and neither side embarrassed themselves either, Angola even tied 2-2 with Portugal in one of the group matches, Wales soundly defeated Denmark and Mexico to qualify for the second round, before losing to England in a tight contest. Zambia and Iran both picked up points as the traditional kings of soccer noticed the rest of the world appearing to catch up. Even Canada managed to win a game! As July had began George’s day was delightful with Argentina defeating England 5-0 in the quarter final shutting the crowing idiots up once more.

The fall out of the World Cup saw many jobs being lost by respective countries all across Europe and the World in general. For a laugh George applied to them all. He received many negative replies. Except one. Which Shocked him. Obviously. Denmark were offering him the job. A small time Scot with only one decent season under his belt in his career was being told he could take charge of the Danes, with the objective of leading them to the Euro 2008 finals. It had to be a joke. They couldn’t really be that desperate could they? George rang around his friends demanding who of them had played the practical joke. None of them owned up. Holy Mackerel! ( Batman ) he thought, and replied in the affirmative – still sure it was some kind of joke – until Kern Bisgard, the head of the FA rang him to congratulate him on the acceptance, and to invite him to a press conference the next day. Buggering hell.

With that George was off to Denmark, thoughts of one day taking control of his homeland still firmly imprinted on his mind, but now he could improve his reputation significantly if he didn’t screw up. If. Meanwhile Eddie was left in charge of some of the friendlies as various trialists and loanees were assessed. A 1-0 defeat by Hamilton followed in what was very much an early, get back into game mode; lose 40 pounds of fat kind of game. It was followed by all the players getting bladdered at the club bar, in front of the World Cup Final where Argentina won 2-1 thanks to Claudio Lopez. As a result Marcelo Bielsa was dismissed as Argentina manager. Bit harsh.

After a while of recruiting more various folk a tour of the Republic of Ireland followed. Trialist Robert Taylor ( aging ex Wolves star ) secured victory over Athlone Town in a game in which no-one else really impressed. That was followed up with a 1-1 draw against Finn Harps, Graeme Donald the scorer in that one.

Another excellent pre-season was completed with a 4-1 defeat at Limerick, where Robert Taylor scored and was sent off, and then back in Scotland a few days before the season proper, Dundee absolutely twonked us 5-0 and Graeme Donald left the field requiring stitches across his forehead. Lovely.

2006-2007 Squad Overview

Goalkeepers

Martyn Margetson 34 The Welshman enjoyed a terrific debut season at Cliftonhill, earning praise from colleagues and rivals through out for helping to keep Dumbarton goals against down to the minimum, a strong factor in Dumbarton managing to win promotion. George will hope he can keep the form high in a league where he’ll face a much stronger test.

05/06 Record: 34 games, 26 conceded, 5 MoM, 7.35

Michel Kuipers 32 The dutchman arrived on a bosman from Hayes, as George wanted to ensure he had 3 fully capable goalkeepers at the club and so picked up the out of favour man in mid June. Certainly able, he'll be pushing hard for a first team spot.

Matthew Glennon 32 The cover player only made 4 appearances last season but his attitude was second to none. An able deputy and always willing to encourage Martyn when he was down. Again, he is likely to only be a cover player this year as the quality of the opposition increases, but may get a chance should Martyn fail to uphold his high standards.

05/06 Record: 4 games 3 conceded, 7.50

Defenders

Warren Cummings 25,DLC This left back arrived from top flight English side Chelsea 3 seasons ago on a free transfer and he has proved to be an assured signing. Last season he played in the vast majority of Dumbarton’s push for promotion, even contributing to the attacking aspect occasionally. Pretty much guaranteed to be one of the better defenders for George.

05/06 Record: 30 games, 2 subs, 1 goal, 2 assists, 6.78

James Cunningham 27 D/MR The right back barely figured in George’s first full season here, mainly due to the superior form of rivals for this position. His lack of ability cost him, and his future at a club that is now a league higher must be seriously questioned.

05/06 Record: 1 game, 2 subs, 6.33

Jim McLeod 23 DRC Jim never made any impact at St. Johnstone and only became known to other clubs via repetitive loan spells throughout his teenage years. Last season was his first full one at Cliftonhill and his appearances were again limited to a back up role at both center and right defense. He will have to improve to make a claim for a regular position.

05/06 Record: 4 games, 5 subs, 6.11

Craig Brittain 32 DC Craig has a long relationship with George stretching back to the numerous loan deals whilst at Fort William and the centre back will continue to play a role at Dumbarton. Though not the most talented of players he is a man who truly loves his profession and gives everything to the cause. It was this attitude that prompted George to reward him with a consistent spell at the back in the latter stages of last season. Time is not on his side but for now Craig is determined to maintain a place in the first X1.

05/06 Record: 20 games, 4 subs, 1 goal, 1 MoM, 6.63

Kyle Sheppard 25 DR The hard working right back arrived on a bosman from Bristol City and boy did he turn out to be a bargain signing for George. A tremendous acquisition who when fit became an almost automatic choice. Calm, collected and very able, Kyle impressed many at the club and hopefully he can repeat the good work in Division 2.

05/06 Record: 33 games

Peter Sharp 25 D/DMLR [/i] The wing back arrived on a permanent deal after his brief loan spell with the club last season from Kidderminster. Will likely provide cover initially though being more talented than Cunningham and McLeod will see him play a few games at least.

05/06 Record: 2 sub appearances, 7.50

Wayne Purser 26 DL Another loanee last season. His appearances were limited due to the form of others, but he showed enough talent for George to pursue a permanent deal in the summer. Will provide cover down the left, and will probably be a better option than bringing back Staunton.

05/06 Record: 5 games, 6.70

Emanuel 24 D/DMR The Portuguese wing back arrived in the middle of the last season on a free, but the clear lack of match fitness hindered his chances of making a successful push for a regular spot. He blew hot and cold, but he still has plenty to bring to Dumbarton and will hopefully be an integral part of George’s plans to stay up in Division 2 this season.

5 starts, 3 subs, 6.50

Mark Dickinson 25 SW/DC Arrived on a free from Northampton. Initial signs look positive and George was content to pick up another bargain who has a good few years in his position ahead of him to calm. A natural leader with great awareness and intelligence should prove to be an inspired presence in what will no doubt be a hectic year.

John Williamson (loan) DC The dependable centre half had plenty of qualities to his game as demonstrated last season where he spent near enough all his time at Dumbarton. Burnely though didn’t want to put him back into the reckoning at Turfmoor so George brought him back on loan again to add depth and quality to the back line.

Stephen McCulloch (loan) 25 DL Arriving from Dundee United until September, George wanted to see what an extra bit of quality looked like compared to his charges already at his disposal. Out of favour at the SPL side, George will be hoping that Stephen will be impressed enough to want to extend the loan later on.

Midfielders

Bernard Diomede 32 FL The signing that shocked a few of the side’s faithful followers turned out to be quite a disappointment compared to what could have been expected of him. Overshadowed by other star players, Bernard struggled to demonstrate the ability that had thrust him into the limelight years ago. He will have to improve if he doesn’t want his career to be seen as a complete and utter failure.

05/06 Record: 13 games, 10 subs, 6.52

Alan Brown 22 MC Another former Fort William player, and one who struggled to make an impact this year, mainly due to the form of certain loan signings tearing up the Third Division. A willingness for first team action may see a departure somewhere down the road unless he makes a rapid improvement soon.

05/06 Record: 4 games, 8 subs, 6.42

Graeme Donald 32 MC Former East Fife midfielder Graeme arrived on a bosman signing in the summer as George looked for an experienced man in the middle. The former Hibs player has made frequent appearances in the lower league so knows what is to be expected and hopefully will be able to contribute to George’s quest to move out of the league.

Kevin Graham 19 MRC This young hopeful has been around 3 years now since joining from the youth academy and has made a positive impression at the club and in the past season made a string of fine performances, but like everyone else at the club his form dipped when George arrived. Another season of reserve football until he improves again.

05/06 Record: 2 starts, 1 sub, 5.67

Michael O’Donnell 17 MR Another very young player who has impressed all and sundry at Dumbarton but a quiet year was called for and again he will progress in the reserves until his time arrives.

05/06 Record: 1 start, 7.00

James McFadden 22 MC The former Motherwell youngster had a steady solid season without being spectacular last year, but hopefully the higher standard of opponents will bring out the best in him this year.

05/06 Record: 19 games, 3 subs, 1 goal, 1 assist, 6.73

Derek Barnes 28 AM/FR The attacker has proved to be useful member of Dumbarton’s squad and he seems content to continue to play in a sparing role. After another year of barely figuring, Derek should probably be thinking about pastures new, as he just doesn’t have the ability.

05/06 Record 1 start, 2 subs, 6.00

Roberto Martinez 32 MC The Spaniard proved to be an astute find for George midway through last season as the experienced old hand proved to be quite capable in the league despite a lack of football. Chipping in with goals as well impressed the supporters – hopefully a pre-season under his belt will improve him further.

05/06 Record: 12 games, 2 subs, 2 goals, 7.21

Jose Cano 26 AM/FC Another continental player who arrived and made an impact – helping to alleviate the pressure on John Sharkey, though he was never a regular until the final few games. Will definitely figure in the coming campaign where his skill should come in handy.

05/06 Record: 8 games 7 subs, 2 goals, 3 assists, 3 MoM, 7.21

Steven Milne 23 D/DMC The former Chelsea reserve joined George after being released from his contract and proved to be an excellent signing. In a successful 4132 formation Steven played the holding role to perfection, and with the addition of Artur became a better player with the competition. It will be interesting to see how the 2 of them fare in a class above the previous year.

05/06 Record: 26 starts, 2 subs, 1 goal, 6.89

Artur 25 DMRC The Spaniard was another mid season purchase when George looked to strengthen his squad and once again he has proved to be a most useful addition to the squad. Similar in ability to Steve Milne, he is perhaps slightly more suited to the holding role, and will no doubt play a big role in keeping Dumbarton’s defense tight.

05/06 Record: 10 starts, 3 subs, 2 assists, 7.10

Danny Schepple 25 AMR The former Birmingham man joined on loan last season and impressed many with his evidently far superior skill and it must be wondered why he never made any inroads in the midlands. Still, their loss is Dumbarton’s gain who picked him up on a bosman as the side’s midfield began to ooze talent. Performances will be key here to any success in Division 2.

05/06 Record: 14 games, 1 sub, 4 goals, 4 assists, 3 MoM, 7.47

John Sharkey (loan) 26 AMR Look who’s back! The talismanic figure adored by the fans returned on a loan spell until October where his outstanding talent will hopefully see the club rack up a few goals if not points early on. His contribution was exceptional and easily proved to be the reason why Dumbarton gained promotion as he was involved in so many of the goals. Let’s hope a higher league won’t deter him.

05/06 Record: 32 games, 1 sub, 23 goals, 6 assists, 11 MoM, 8.01

Stuart Duff (loan) 24 AMRL The exciting winger on loan from Dundee United seems to be another unhappy man well spotted by George, who by now clearly had a talent for discovering miserable, yet skilful players. Out of the reckoning at his current employers he has spent the past few seasons loaned out to various division 1 and 2 clubs as he bids to either claim a regular role at United or a permanent move elsewhere

Forwards

Gary McDonald 35 FC Rubbish. Spent much of last year in traction after a car accident. Not a good player. At all. Reserve action all the way for Gary until he decides to bugger off or someone comes in for him.

05/06 Record: Yeah Right!

Gary Alexander 26 S Easily one of the more consistent performers in the promotion winning side last year, Gary’s big downfall was a lack of goals. He caused enough havoc in the box, and set up a fair few himself, but he needs to be a little more selfish if Dumbarton are to grab the goals necessary to ensure survival. Sharkey cannot be relied upon all the time.

05/06 Record: 32 starts, 3 subs, 7 goals, 5 assists, 4 MoM, 7.38

Wayne Gray 26 FC The bosman signing from Dover has a lot to prove for George after an uninspiring debut season. Roundly criticized for his scoring record Wayne always put the effort in but had no ruthless instinct to finish the job off. Still, he performed much better than many of the alternatives last year and will be given a second bite at the cherry in Division 2.

05/06 Record: 18 games, 6 subs, 2 goals, 2 assists, 6.63

Billy Melvin 29 FRC George couldn’t remember the exact reason for brining Billy in, but he was there, on a bosman from Darlington to provide cover. No genius on the pitch by any means but a heart of gold and an eye for goal might see him spring a few surprises.

Jerome Aliadere 23 SC The free transfer George was looking for all year. A proven talent willing to join. With Arsenal destroying all in their path in England, and buying new forwards, Jerome saw his time was up and left of his own free will where George befriended the Frenchman and invited him up for a trial. Where he signed instantly. Hopefully he’ll be able to prove to Arsene what he’s missing.

2006-2007 Dumbies Fight For Survival

So the season arrived eventually, George with a new brand of players to choose from, yet always on the look out for new additions when they face an League Cup opener away to Partick Thistle. Dumbarton player reasonably well and contested the match for most of the time before eventually succumbing to a Willie Noble strike late in the second half.

Ironically the opening match of the league campaign saw Dumbarton hosting none other than Elgin City, hardly a different kettle of fish. It was though a match which delighted the home supporters who had turned out in force to welcome their side into a new league, a new era, under their ( still inexplicable ) international manager. Chris Adamson, the Elgin keeper fouled Cano in the 19th minute and received his marching orders as Jerome Aliadere dispatched the penalty chalking up his first for the club before John Sharkey quickly established a 2 goal lead before half time. Capitalizing on the man advantage George encouraged a more attacking attitude as Danny Schepple was brought on for Artur and it only took a few minutes for the substitute to get in on the act, converting Cano’s cross. Cano, in his man of the match display then rounded off a wonderful afternoon with a diving header, making it 4-0 Dumbarton. A great opener to the season.

There followed another midweek cup game, and in bidding to keep the other players happy George made almost wholesale changes to the side with only Artur retaining his role as a starter. Remarkably though Dumbarton came away from Montrose with another victory and it was made sweeter by the fact it was no fluke! Alan Brown had scored a well deserved first half goal before his replacement James McFadden sealed the points in the second half. Michel Kuipers had a good game in goal whilst loan signing Stuart Duff also impressed.

The joy of the great start to the season was short lived though and the fans were brought back down to reality at Peterhead, where this time Dumbarton suffered from a very early dismissal. John Williamson the idiot who was barely on the pitch for more than a minute. The home side then raced into a 2-0 lead that Dumbarton simply could not recover from. Though credit must be given for fighting strongly in the second half in a small period where pressure was mounted, but nothing came of it.

Whilst waiting for the next match to arrive George spent a few long evenings pouring over the FIFA lists of players available to sign. He was addicted to more. That sweet, sweet rush of signing new players was an experienced he longed for time and time again, and now he’d got a hold of players not contracted to any clubs and he’d sorted out all the Scottish ones too so he could at least in some way begin to slowly yet surely create the pure squad.

There was little news though before a trip to former Division 3 residents East Fife, in what would again be a tough match. Changes were made from the Peterhead defeat yet the new players could not prevent Barry Moffat notching the match winning goal in the 40th minute. Despite losing though George still saw positive signs from the game. His side had not been out classed by any means and as soon as they became accustomed to the pace of the division he was sure results would not be so negative.

That game gone though and George received an email reminding him of the deadline for the squads to be chosen for the upcoming Denmark games. Not having actually paid any attention to the relative success of Danes across the world George forked up a list of all Danes currently active in the top leagues ( if they weren’t there they weren’t worth considering ) and made a few searches on the Internet. Browsing chat forums and general opinion polls, he decided to make one or two new additions to the squad. If anything – it would please Peter and Bob from Brondby.

There was also going to be a time very soon when he would gain first hand insight into the class of those players and George wasn’t sure if he was ready for the shock of it all. However his thoughts were immediately redirected to Dumbarton though with ahost of phone messages and letters from various players and agents, all it seems unhappy with the 200 quid being offered for their services, and the month-to month – scenario apparently didn’t sit too well with those looking for security, which was bizarre from George’s perspective as it would give those players the freedom to move to a bigger club whenever they wanted.

Not long after though and Dumbarton were back on the road once more, traveling to first division Clyde in the Challenge Cup where yet more changes were made to accommodate those who had not featured much this season. On the bus the initial signs of fisticuffs appeared with Frenchman Bernard Diomede demanding to know why he wasn’t an automatic choice for the side in a highly aggressive manner. George did little to cool the tension by responding equally vociferously:†Because you’re CRAP!†The evening saw a pleasant return journey though as thanks to a fine performance from Matt Glennon and a goal from Matt Dickson, Dumbarton had won another round in the cup, to the pleasure of the watching directors.

On the recommendation of those already here, Derek Duncan joined on loan from George’s favourite club Dundee United for a few months, the defender in just to add a little more cover. Out of curiosity George then sent loan bids to all other players listed as such at Dundee United just to test how accommodating they really were. They were unable to reply though before the final league fixture in August, a tough match with North-South-West Stirling, which ended in a goalless draw.

September soon arrived and with it a slight dilemma. Denmark were hosting Greece in Copenhagen, whilst Dumbarton were off to Montrose on the same day, so clearly Eddie would be taking to Montrose game while George jetted off to meet his crew for the first time, just hours before a European Qualifier. He could have been a wee bit more organized on the whole “getting to know you†attitude first off but he put it down to experience or lack thereof. Just before flying out though, George popped in to Bernard’s house to tell him he was on the transfer list.

The Dumbarton game as George would discover later on ended in a draw. Despite dominating the opening hours play Montrose took the lead quite unfairly before Jose Cano was dismissed for bad mouthing the referee. A defeat looked inevitable before Aliadiere scored at the death to square the points. A down side was the injury to Kyle Sheppard.

As for the Denmark game, George utterly clueless and very overwhelmed by the occasion decided to play it safe with a 442 and trust to the honesty of players with regards to positions. It turned out fine as he witnessed an astonishingly high level of football being played by the Danes who went on to win only by the odd goal with Martin Jorgensen scoring moments after the interval. He went back to Scotland reasonably content until discovering Scotland had lost at home to Romania – in what reports suggested was another diabolical performance. He also learned Cano had picked up a suspension whilst Kyle Sheppard would be out of action for 2 weeks with a slight strain, though picking up an away point was something to be satisfied about he thought.

A sign of progress soon developed as suddenly Dumbarton were loaning players out, with Kevin Graham taken by East Stirling for a month and 50% of his wages too before Blackpool, the poor fools had a 30,000 pound bid accepted for Frenchman Diomede moments after that. That evening also saw more cup action again as Dumbarton hosted Morton in the Challenge Cup, a game that again saw changes to the line up. A poor start saw the hosts 2-0 down inside 30 minutes but an astonishing period after the interval saw fortunes completely reversed as 2 goals from Billy Melvin in 3 minutes and one from John Sharkey moments afterwards changed the complexion of the game and the hosts held on to complete a fine win to send them into the semi finals.

The following day saw the departure of Diomede completed as he moved to England after a poor showing in his time here. George had little time to contemplate that as he was on a ryanair flight out to Estonia in no time quick where Denmark faced another challenge. After a poor first half that saw the Estonians all over Denmark, George felt relieved to be going into the break all square where a re jig in formation saw a revitalized side come out stronger in the second half, eventually clinching a late winner from Martin Jorgensen again.

At the weekend Dumbarton were back to Cliftonhill again and hosting Queen of the South. After a tough opening 45 minutes where they were almost punished for being too defensive, George put on Stuart Duff form Steve Milne and went on the offensive – producing the match winning goal on 53 minutes when Jerome Aliadiere converted John Sharkey’s cross. The win was then followed up with an away point at Stranraer. Billy Melvin proving his worth yet again with a first half strike as Dumbarton seemed set to take another impressive victory before a failure to take chances and slack defending was punished by Warren Peyton with 15 minutes remaining.

After being rejected several times over by high profile, yet equally unemployed Scots several times over George decided to wait a while, instead immediately confirming the squad for Denmark’s next match without bothering to see if there were any injuries or loss of form amongst the players. That was the prelude to a home match with Partick Thistle, a side they had already come into contact with earlier in the season in a close defeat. Sadly for this one George changed the wrong personnel and lost 3-1. Thistle scored 3 times within the first 10 minutes to leave Dumbarton a little screwed and though Billy Melvin reduced the arrears in first half stoppage time the damage was done. Afterwards Kuipers was warned for his dodgy keeping display and the winging little git asked for a transfer. George was very tempted but turned it down.

Still the mood improved at the end of the month once the original Dundee United pair had extended their loan spells until January and Dumbarton traveled to Raith Rovers and pulled off an excellent win, with the in form, and shocking everyone, Billy Melvin the hero once more. The match had seen chances at either end long into the second half, before Melvin tucked home a centre from right wing back Emanuel with 12 minutes remaining. It incited a furious response from early pace setters Rovers but another excellent display from Martyn Margetson helped repel their efforts long enough to secure 3 very welcome points.

October began with a trip to St. Mirren of the First Division in the Challenge Cup. George not wanting to upset fringe players too much changed the side round once more, not overly bothered by the result, more happy in being able to give other players a chance to prove themselves. Sadly a Stephen Donnachie strike in the second half won it for the home side who progressed to the final. Of more concern to George was Billy’s leg injury that could see the forward miss a good two weeks of action.

Still Sharkey had decided to extend his loan until February, even if his contributions this season had been less vital it was still good news before another trip to Denmark was required for the qualifier hosting FYROM at Parken, Copenhagen. A tough opening spell saw penalty appeals denied and injuries endured by both teams before the Danes took hold in the second half once Jesper Gronkjaer had scored the opener. A Miro Weiss own goal and a Martin Jorgensen strike left the home crowd happy and the Danes on top of the group table, with 5 months to go until the next match away in Paris to contend with. Scotland’s loss to Holland was the only souring note of the afternoon – the only possible positive being that if he’d already managed to bag one international job, then the Scottish one could open up sooner than he’d thought…

A return to Elgin City followed and incidentally a re-acquaintance with Padhraig Staunton was on loan there. He also had the last laugh setting up the only goal of the game for David McIntrye on 13 minutes. Dumbarton also lost Stephen McCulloch to injury, incurring a 2 week absence as well as the day did not go well for George. Still 7th place after 10 games isn’t that bad and he’d be happy to finish there at the end of the season too.

In a league full of excitement and drama, it was fairly well summed up in the home game with Peterhead the week after. Emanuel was given his marching orders as Dumbarton returned to a 3-1-3-2 formation, wingers out wide, defenders all central, before the away side took advantage to go 1 up. After the break, Van Der Ham, the man who was on loan at Fort William a few years ago then headed Peterhead into a 2-0 lead on 61 minutes. Substitutes were brought on by Cameron and 2 minutes later, Billy Melvin pulled one back with a low drive, connecting with a Stuart Duff cross. 4 minutes after that, substitute Wayne Gray notched his first goal of the season after firing home after a ranging run from Steven Milne. The excitement was terrific and any neutral would have thoroughly enjoyed it. It stayed like that until the end of the match and George was only too glad to collect a point after playing with 10 men.

There was one final match before the end of the season and that was hosting East Fife, a side just above Dumbarton in the league. A Danny Schepple strike seemed to have won the tie in the second half but the annoying fools equalized with the last kick of the game to leave Dumbarton in 7th spot and frothing at how they’d managed to let the 3 points slip away.
