Stuniverse
Saturday 24th September 2022 Preview: Hallam (away) FA Vase, 2nd Qualifying Round Hallam play in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division (Tier 9), which is a tier above us. Hallam are currently top of the league, with a game-in-hand, so this is going to be a very difficult challenge for us... ... but it also represents a good litmus test to see how good we are. Michael Davies, has joined Adam Davenport in the medical room with a damaged foot. Waide Fairhurst, Mason Wilson-Rhiney and Adam Davenport all passed fitness tests but Waide, probably, is the only one we'll risk. New signing, Sam Wright, goes straight into central midfield, with Sam Hughes dropping onto the bench in place of Dan Tuck.
Stuniverse
Saturday 24th September 2022 Hallam v Staveley Miners Welfare FA Vase, 2nd Qualifying Round Sandygate, Sheffield. I'm happy with how we played, we matched Hallam for the most part and, I think, the stats will back me up on that. They got more attempts on target than we did and were more ruthless in front of goal. That was the only difference really. We got off to the perfect start when Max Rhodes scored after just two minutes. Maybe we scored too early... ... Hallam were level after 10 minutes and took the lead on 22 minutes. On 59 minutes, they went 3-1 up. We changed to a more Attacking system after that but, whilst we huffed and puffed and caused them some problems, we didn't look like scoring. We're out of the FA Vase, but we can hold our heads high after giving Hallam, a team top of the division above us, a run for their money.
Stuniverse
Friday 30th September 2022 Goodbye, Ethan I met with Ethan Harrison (DRC) because he was complaining about a lack of playing time. Ethan was currently half a star but with potential to be 3-5 stars. He was one of my early pre-season signings and other defenders had come in after him. I didn't think he was going to get much playing time and tried to convince him to accept a lower level of playing time. Ethan was having none of it so I decided to release him. Injuries and Fitness Tests Team News Two new signings feature with Callum Hope starting in central midfield instead of Harvey Dickson. Stuniverse
Saturday 1st October 2022 Retford v Staveley Miners Welfare Northern Counties East League Division 1 (10) Rail Ground, Retford. I thought we played well today and thoroughly deserved the win against Retford. Max Rhodes gave us the lead with a fierce shot that went in off the post just after half-an-hour. Unfortunately, with all three substitutes already on the pitch, we had to play the last 20 minutes with Max Rhodes nursing a pulled hamstring. Sam Wright calmed our nerves when his thunderbolt of a shot, from long-range, doubled our lead. In added on time, we had the chance for a third but Sam Hughes saw his penalty saved by Jon Kennedy.

Stuniverse
Saturday 8th October 2022 Preview: Nostell Miners Welfare (away) Northern Counties East League Division 1 (11) Nostell Miners Welfare are without a manager after Ian Walker left to become manager of Holbeach United (Tier 10). We have something of an injury crisis up front with Max Rhodes ruled out with a pulled hamstring and Waide Fairhurst still recovering from pulled knee ligaments. Possibly, Waide could give us 45 minutes. Fortunately, Sonny Best can play up front as well as left-wing. Who knew...? New signing Bolton Makwedza comes straight into the team at centre-back in place of Josh Bowkett. 16-year old Jacek Kosowski will be on the bench as the back-up striker because we don't want to risk Waide Fairhurst, with Max Rhodes also out injured. Stuniverse
Saturday 8th October 2022 Nostell Miners Welfare v Staveley Miners Welfare Northern Counties East League Division 1 (11) Welfare Ground, Wakefield. I've got to be honest and say I'm annoyed after this. A draw, away from home, is a good result but we were 2-0 up at half-time and should have done better. Our two strikers combined on 10 minutes, Ryan Charnley heading home Sonny Best's cross. And on 38 minutes, Sam Wright scored a screamer from outside the penalty area. I'm not sure what happened in the second-half, we just seemed to go to sleep. We forgot to mark players at the far post allowing Mellish to pull one back with a shot and Koukoulis to equalise with a header after Lewis Cox had parried a free-kick up into the air; it was a brilliant save by Lewis but none of our defenders reacted to the rebound. We went Attacking after that, but were unable to grab a winner. Edited December 29, 2022 by Stuniverse

Stuniverse
Saturday 15th October 2022 Preview: Dronfield Town (Home) Northern Counties East League Division 1 (12) Dronfield Town are bottom of the league with only one point, albeit, they did pick up that draw two games ago against Athersley Recreation (1-1 at home). We're going to have to guard against complacency. I'd hoped I wouldn't have to worry about complacency, with this squad, but I can only put our poor second-half display against Nostell Miners Welfare down to complacency. We're still without Max Rhodes and Marley Grant through injury. We had a number of niggly injuries this week, but everybody seems to have shaken them off ready for the Dronfield Town game. Waide Fairhurst returns up top, after a knee ligament injury, with Sonny Best going to the bench. New signing, Tom Bell, comes into central midfield for Callum Hope. Stuniverse
Saturday 15th October 2022 Staveley Miners Welfare v Dronfield Town Northern Counties East League Division 1 (12) Inkersall Road, Staveley Miners Welfare. To be honest with you, we blew Dronfield Town away in the first 10 minutes. Waide Fairhurst showed no ill-effects from his recent injury, scoring after 24 seconds, adding another two minutes later, and completing his hat-trick on 11 minutes. Waide then added his, and our fourth, from the penalty spot on 23 minutes. That was it for our scoring, although we did have other chances. We had to take Alex Wood off after 74 minutes with a hamstring problem, but we don't think it's too serious. Dronfield scored a late, consolation goal in added-on time. Stuniverse
Sunday 16th October 2022 Tuck released by Staveley Miners Welfare Players who come to see me to complain about a lack of playing time should really know how I operate by now. I tell them there's a reason they're not getting the playing time we initially agreed because other players have since joined the club and pushed them down the pecking order. Then I give them the opportunity to agree to a lower playing time expectation. If they agree, great, if they disagree, like Dan Tuck did, then there's a very high possibility I'll release them. It is a sign of how much we've improved this season though. When I signed Dan Tuck, I had high hopes for him and, at the time, I thought he was our best central midfielder. But since then, I've signed six players who would all get in the starting 11 ahead of Dan. Sorry, Dan, but... goodbye. Stuniverse
Friday 21st October 2022 Here's my thinking with the strikers After the recent injury crisis with our strikers, that saw both Waide Fairhurst and Max Rhodes out injured at the same time, I thought it wouldn't hurt to have more strength in depth, and bringing in two young strikers seemed ideal. Although my backroom staff think Mitchell George and Luca Nelson are already better than my other strikers, with Waide Fairhurst, Max Rhodes and Ryan Charnley scoring goals for fun, I'm afraid Mitchell and Luca will have to be patient for now. Sonny Best is an interesting one as he's more of a winger (AMRL), but can't currently play MRL which are the positions I'm using in my 4-4-2. I'm training him as a ML. At least Ryan Charnley is no longer unhappy with his playing time. Edited December 29, 2022 by Stuniverse

We have no major injury concerns, but a few players are working their way back to full fitness. Having signed two strikers this week, it's unlikely we'll rush Max Rhodes back. New signing Sam Agius comes in for Lewis Cox in goal. Another new signing, Nathan Waterston, replaces Alex Wood on the right wing. Stuniverse
Saturday 22nd October 2022 Wakefield AFC v Staveley Miners Welfare Northern Counties East League Division 1 (13) LD Nutrition Stadium (formerly The Millennium Stadium), Featherstone. I'm very proud of my players after today's game. That's about as complete an away performance as you're going to see. Ryan Charnley and Waide Fairhurst combined brilliantly up front, not once, but twice, as Ryan set Waide up for both of his goals. Charlie Rutt headed in Ernest Ofosu's corner at the near post for a 3-0 half-time lead. After the break, we managed the game out perfectly in the second-half and were unlucky not to add another goal or two. It was nice for our new goalkeeper, Sam Agius, to get a clean sheet on his debut. Edited December 29, 2022 by Stuniverse

This was a game we really feel we should have won. Waide Fairhurst got us off to a fantastic start with a goal in the first minute from an exquisite chip over the goalkeeper. We had chances to extend our lead, but conceded just before half-time. We made some adjustments at the break, going Positive and asking our wingers to attack more. Then we pushed our wingers further forward and went Attacking. It worked, with Sam Hughes giving us an 85th minute lead with a long-range shot into the bottom corner. We went Defensive after that to hold onto our 2-1 lead but, ironically, we created more chances after that change than Armthorpe did. That might have been our undoing though, as they caught us out in the 93rd minute and equalised.

Stuniverse
Saturday 5th November 2022 Preview: Beverley Town (away) Northern Counties East League Division 1 (15) This is a big game, possibly our biggest game of the season so far. We are 2nd in the league table. We travel to Beverley Town, who are top, above us by two goals on goal difference. A win takes us top by three points, a draw keeps things all levelled up as they are, and a defeat... and I'm sure Beverley Town will be as hungry as us to win... would see us lose ground. But win, lose, or draw, our season won't be defined today. After this game, there's still another 23 games of football to play. We're virtually at full strength. No changes to the starting 11, but Max Rhodes and Sonny Best return to the bench instead of Mitchell George and Alex Wood. Stuniverse
Saturday 5th November 2022 Beverley Town v Staveley Miners Welfare Northern Counties East League Division 1 (15) Norwood Recreation Ground, Beverley. For the first time this season, we weren't good enough. It pains me to say that, but credit to Beverley Town. Beverley won the two key battles. They bossed midfield and their centre-backs got the better of our strikers. Ultimately, they had Charlie Dunkerley, who was the best player on the pitch today, and we didn't. We couldn't cope with Dunkerley. He scored his first on six minutes, his second on 32 minutes, both times out running our defence, and he completed his hat-trick on 50 minutes when he lobbed our goalkeeper Sam Agius. At 0-1, we went Positive and told our wingers to attack more. We had a great chance to equalise on 22 minutes, but Waide Fairhurst saw his penalty saved. At the break, we went more Attacking and made two substitutions, but we were unable to wrestle control of the game from Beverley Town.

Stuniverse
Saturday 12th November 2022 Glasshoughton Welfare v Staveley Miners Welfare Northern Counties East League Division 1 (16) Lee Johnson Signage Stadium, Castleford. After a defeat and a draw in our last two games, it was good to get back to winning ways again. We got a lucky break in the first minute when Glasshoughton Welfare were reduced to ten men after a shocking challenge from Nickin on Waide Fairhurst. We took the lead on 11 minutes when their goalkeeper dropped a cross and Nathan Waterston was first to react and tap home. Glasshoughton equalised after half a hour. On 41 minutes we were back in front, Max Rhodes finishing well after good work by Waide Fairhurst. Just before the hour mark, Waide Fairhurst scored himself, getting on the end of a low cross from Kane Patterson. We made life difficult for ourselves when we conceded a penalty in the 61st minute, only for Sam Agius to make an excellent save to keep the score at 3-1. If I'm honest, it wasn't a convincing win against ten men, but it was an away win and three valuable points nevertheless. Stuniverse
Saturday 19th November 2022 Staveley Miners Welfare v Campion Northern Counties East League Division 1 (17) Inkersall Road, Staveley Miners Welfare. Unfortunately, this was one of those games. Play like we did today, we probably win seven or eight out of ten times. We hit the woodwork twice in the first half when Waide Fairhurst rattled the bar (4 mins) and then Sam Wright's free-kick (23 mins) bounced back off the bar. And we struck the woodwork for a third time, after the break, when Ryan Charnley's dink over the goalkeeper (68 mins) clipped the outside of the post. We got caught out at the back on 40 minutes, when Campion took the lead. Boshell looked offside as he was ahead of our central defenders, but on review we realised our left-back, Sam Sharrock-Peplow had played him onside. Fortunately though, we levelled in added on time through Waide Fairhurst to go in 1-1 at the break. During the break, we asked our wingers to attack more. On 53 minutes, we brought Ryan Charnley on for Max Rhodes and changed to an Attacking mentality, pushing our wingers further forward. It worked as Ryan Charnley gave us the lead on the hour and clipped the post eight minutes later. With Bolton Makwedza on a yellow card, we brought on Josh Bowkett and went to a more Balanced mentality. We struggled though without Bolton and our suspended centre-back Charlie Rutt and Campion equalised with a towering header on 85 minutes that Bolton or Charlie might have been able to deal with. We went for it in added-on time, pushing for a winner, but it wasn't to be. Edited December 30, 2022 by Stuniverse
Stuniverse
Saturday 26th November 2022 Preview: Brigg Town (Home) Northern Counties East League Division 1 (18) Brigg Town are 4th, five points behind us, so this is a big game and we'll need The Trojans fans right behind us at Inkersall Road. Our number three goalkeeper, Ben Allsop, pulled a back muscle in training this week. Charlie Rutt returns to central defence after his suspension in place of David Richardson. Up front, I'm giving a start to new signing Mitchell George, alongside Waide Fairhurst. Ryan Charnley stays on the bench so Max Rhodes, unfortunately for him, misses out. We're probably going to adopt a more attacking system as I've been looking for a way to get Sonny Best involved on the left wing and I think that might be the best way. Stuniverse
Saturday 26th November 2022 Staveley Miners Welfare v Brigg Town Northern Counties East League Division 1 (18) Inkersall Road, Staveley Miners Welfare. Brigg Town are a very good team and they made it incredibly difficult for us. We had to work extremely hard to find a way to win. We'd gone with a more Attacking mentality and approach, to try and get the best out of Sonny Best, pardon the pun, but it just wasn't working. We couldn't create much at all. Brigg Town had more possession, had more attempts, but fortunately for us, Sam Agius only had routine saves to make. We did look more robust at the back with Charlie Rutt in alongside Bolton Makwedza in central defence. We made changes... We went more like we'd played previously, Balanced and dropping Lewis Farmer back... Mitchell George was struggling up front so we moved Sonny Best up there, dropped the left winger back, and changed to more expansive, play out of defence, and focus play down both wings. And we finally broke the dead-lock when Nathan Waterston headed in from close range. ... finally, we went with shorter passing. Ryan Charnley doubled our lead with a close range finish. We made lots of changes throughout the game as we endeavoured to find a way to win. Fortunately, we got the win in the end and, tactically, it gives me a lot to think about moving forward. Stuniverse
Tuesday 29th November 2022 North Ferriby v Staveley Miners Welfare Northern Counties East League Cup 2nd Round Dransfield Stadium, North Ferriby. We stuck with the changes we made during the Brigg Town game last time out and, in the main, I was pleased with what I saw. Away from home, against a North Ferriby team who play in the tier above us, I thought we played very well. We dominated the possession, created nearly as many chances as them, and took the lead through a powerful shot from Waide Fairhurst. Unfortunately though, North Ferriby were more clinical than us in front of goal. Miller equalised with a stunning strike that curled in. We made some changes to try and get ourselves back in front, but we were stunned by a freak goal when Parkes's shot bounced off both our centre-backs, first Bolton Makwedza and then David Richardson, and wrong-footed our goalkeeper Sam Agius. Then Minton wrapped up the win for North Ferriby with a stunning free-kick. I'm proud of the players, they matched their opponents from the tier above us for the most part and made North Ferriby work extremely hard to progress to the third round.
