Stuniverse
Saturday 27th January 2024 Garforth Town v Staveley Miners Welfare Northern Counties East League Premier Division Bannister Prentice Stadium, Garforth -- You always want to start well away from home but, even I, didn't expect us to be 2-0 up against Garforth Town after four minutes. Both goals scored by Connor Heath, both from Tom Parkinson crosses from the left. After that, Garforth probably had the better of things, they had to chase the game, but we defended well and Sam Waller in our goal was on top of everything. Stuniverse
Saturday 3rd February Preview: Bridlington Town (Home) Northern Counties East League Premier Division It was a real blow that Filozofe Mabete's suspension for a straight red card in the Northern Counties East League Cup against Knaresborough Town has been extended by two games, but Tom Hannigan is more than capable. Mitchell George is still out with a twisted ankle but we expect him back in training sometime during the next two weeks, probably in the next 10-14 days although we won't be rushing his return. Everybody has looked lively in training so it's same as we were last time out against Garforth Town.

Oh, yes, @Pearomaniac and he goes by the name of D'Andre Wainwright. Just the 43 goals this season in all competitions from 35(1) appearances. As you can see, D'Andre and his strike partner Mitchell George (currently injured) are our main goal scorers. I also rate Connor Heath highly, Connor just hasn't had as much playing time as my other two strikers. D'Andre isn't even the top scorer in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division though. Mind you, holding onto these players is a challenge in itself as they can leave just like that if they get an offer from elsewhere they like - all that time I invested developing Sonny Best, giving him playing time when he wasn't even rated at ML, and what thanks do I get? None, he jumped ship in a heartbeat earlier this season. P.S. I added a screenshot of D'Andre Wainwright's attributed to my reply to your original post above. Stuniverse
Saturday 3rd February 2024 Staveley Miners Welfare v Bridlington Town Northern Counties East League Premier Division Inkersall Road, Staveley -- Today was just one of those games that you get sometimes where things didn't quite go right for us. I don't think we played badly, we just couldn't score, and after 16 league games unbeaten, winning 15 of those, maybe we were due a game like today. But you also have to give Bridlington Town a lot of credit, they worked extremely hard. We didn't help ourselves early in the game though. Bridlington Town put a free-kick into our penalty area and Kane Patterson tripped his man. Sam Waller saved the penalty but the ball fell to the taker who got a chance to redeem himself by rolling the ball into the net. We came close after that, with Tom Parkinson rattling the bar with a direct free-kick and, just before the break, Connor Heath headed Ben Midgley's free-kick onto the bar. At half-time we changed to a more Attacking mentality. We did create chances but D'Andre Wainwright, in particular, although he wasn't the only one, didn't have his shooting boots on today. Around the 68 minute mark, we went even more attacking by asking our full-backs to push forward as wing-backs. D'Andre Wainwright and Tom Parkinson were having a rare off day, so I subbed them both off on 73 minutes. It wasn't to be and we have to just say "Well done, Bridlington" and go away, lick our wounds, and get ready for a big, BIG match on Wednesday night when 2nd-placed Hallam visit Inkersall Road. Stuniverse
Wednesday 7th February 2024 Preview: Hallam (Home) Northern Counties East League Premier Division Football matches don't get much bigger than this. Not for Staveley Miners Welfare any way. We are top of Northern Counties East League Premier Division. Hallam are second, eight points behind us. After this game, we will have 11 more games to play and, dependent on the result, we could be as many as 11 points clear, or only five. The game is massive. We want to win. Hallam want to win. At Sandygate, earlier in the season, we couldn't be separated and fought out a 2-2 draw. Filozofe Mabete serves the last game of his three-game suspension tonight. It's also too early to risk Mitchell George, in fact, he's some way off a return to training. Despite the 0-1 defeat, I thought we played well overall against Bridlington Town last time out, so I'm not going to make any knee-jerk changes. Hopefully, though, we'll have our shooting boots on. We have been working on that in training. Come on you Trojans! Edited February 10, 2023 by Stuniverse
Stuniverse
Wednesday 7th February 2024 Staveley Miners Welfare v Hallam Northern Counties East League Premier Division Inkersall Road, Staveley -- Yes! What a win! I'm so proud of the players today. To bounce back, from losing at home to Bridlington in midweek, to comprehensively defeat Hallam, our closest rivals for the title and automatic promotion, I'm so immensely proud of them. And they did it, after being second best for the entirety of the first-half. Hallam, and they deserve a lot of credit for this, were all over us almost from first whistle to half-time whistle. Nothing was working for us. We didn't win any second balls, we couldn't pass to a player in a blue-and-white-striped shirt, but the one thing we could do, and this is what kept us in it, is we defended like heroes. Our normal Early Crosses weren't working. We told the players to stop hitting early crosses and that didn't work. We asked the players to Work The Ball Into The Box. 40 minutes, Kane Patterson plays a long ball down the channel, D'Andre Wainwright collects it, outruns our former player David Richardson and, with our very first shot on target, D'Andre fires the ball across the goalkeeper, into the corner of the net, and we lead 1-0 totally against the run of play. Hallam started the second-half on fire, and within two minutes of the restart, they were level with an incisive team goal where they passed their way through the heart of our midfield and defence. But we looked more confident. Connor Heath had a goal disallowed for offside and then, on 50 minutes, Connor restored our lead, heading home a cross at the far post. Tom Parkinson scored a header on 72 minutes to make it 3-1. Tom Parkinson was then scythed down by Wiegand and the referee correctly produced a red card. We could relax then, even more so when D'Andre Wainwright scored his second goal of the game late on to make it 4-1. Stuniverse
Saturday 10th February 2023 Preview: Stockport Town (away) Northern Counties East League Premier Division Away to 4th-placed Stockport Town is going to be a very difficult challenge for us today. Mitchell George isn't ready for a return yet. After beating 2nd-placed Hallam 4-1 in midweek, I was going to name an unchanged team but a couple of players were looking tired in training so there are two changes. Aaron Atkinson comes into central midfield for Ben Midgley. After his straight red card, and three game suspension, I was going to make Filozofe Mabete wait on the bench for his chance but, with Tom Hannigan looking tired, Filozofe starts, Tom goes on the bench, and a very unfortunate Steven Johnson-Fikula misses out. Stuniverse
Saturday 10th February 2024 Stockport Town v Staveley Miners Welfare Northern Counties East League Premier Division Stockport Sports Village, Stockport -- We haven't had many, if any, nil-nil draws before today. To be honest, I think we're missing Mitchell George because, the Hallam game aside when we won 4-1, we haven't created as many chances or scored as many goals as we were. We had only one shot on target all game and Connor Heath saw a header bounce back off the post. That was it for us. Defensively we were very good with Charlie Rutt marshalling the troops and Sam Waller pulling off a couple of superb saves. It's an away point and, with Hallam losing at home to Sheffield, it's a very good point. We have 10 games left to play and a 12 point advantage over Hallam. We have a decision to make with Mitchell George. Do we put him on the bench for this FA Vase cup-tie, or do we rest him and see how he is ahead of the next Northern Counties East League Premier Division game. Even though we've missed him up front, we won't be taking any risks with Mitchell George. Not in a cup competition any way. Tom Hannigan comes back in for the departed Filozofe Mabete and Steven Johnson-Fikula returns to the bench. Ben Midgley, who we rested against Stockport Town in midweek, returns in place of Aaron Atkinson. Edited February 11, 2023 by Stuniverse
Stuniverse
Saturday 17th February 2024 City of Liverpool v Staveley Miners Welfare FA Vase 5th Round Berry Street Garage Stadium, Bootle -- There's something special about these Cup games against football clubs from other divisions in other areas of the country because we just don't have the resources to scout the opposition properly and, regardless of what tier they play in, you just don't know what to expect. We knew City of Liverpool were a good team and they proved that today. Sure, we knew Danny Gordon took a good free-kick, but we didn't appreciate just how good until he put a howitzer past Sam Waller as early as the second minute. On 14 minutes we suffered a real blow when Connor Heath had to come off with a groin strain and we could be without him for up to a month. We brought Zack Clarke on and went more Attacking. Unfortunately, after arriving on loan from Chester, I haven't been able to give Zack as much playing time as he'd like but, after being on the pitch 20 minutes, Zack Clarke equalised for us. 1-1 at half-time, we encouraged the players and we were much improved after the break. Two goals in three minutes gave us control of the game. D'Andre Wainwright got on the end of Tom Bell's though ball to nod the ball past an onrushing goalkeeper for 2-1. Lewis Farmer then dinked the ball over the goalkeeper and it was 3-1. City of Liverpool pulled one back, before D'Andre Wainwright scored again to wrap up a 4-2 victory and a place in the FA Vase Quarter-Final. Stuniverse
Saturday 24th February 2024 Staveley Miners Welfare v Knaresborough Town Northern Counties East League Premier Division Inkersall Road, Staveley -- We did everything we could to win this game and I can't really fault the players at all. The game ended 0-0 and, when their goalkeeper is the Player of the Match, that really does say it all. We had our best chance in the first-half, D'Andre Wainwright was tripped in the area as he prepared to shoot. Zack Clarke stepped up to take the spot-kick and Eric Edge made a great save. Minutes later, Zack Clarke thought he'd given us the lead but the offside flag ruled it out, probably correctly. Knaresborough crashed a free-kick against the bar and we scrambled the rebound away. With half an hour to go we went more Attacking and brought Mitchell George on. D'Andre Wainwright thought he'd scored but was on the wrong side of a very tight offside decision. We couldn't beat Eric Edge and we drew 0-0. But it turned out to be a good point in the end as North Ferriby and Hallam both lost. Stuniverse
Wage Budgets @Punch, @warlock I finally worked out how to view the wage budgets for each league. It's on the division screen, under Stats, buried in the left-handside menus under Finances. -- Staveley Miners Welfare, it turns out, have the highest wage budget in Northern Counties East League Premier Division (Tier 9) at £10.03K per annum. -- Belper Town, the football club I'm joining as manager in the summer, have a wage budget of over double Staveley's, £24.59K per annum, the 8th highest in Northern Premier League Premier Division (Tier 7). Surprisingly, even higher than Matlock Town's (a team I had an interview with this season) who have a yearly wage budget of £11.8K. -- Finally, the other football club I've had an interview with this season, Mickleover, have an annual wage budget of £9.77K, in the Southern League Premier Central (Tier 7). Following the departures of Sonny Best (ML) and Lewis Farmer (MR) we're a bit short on wingers and the Board haven't looked to replace either of them (Note: as I'm leaving to join Belper Town at the end of the season, I'm no longer allowed any input into player and staff recruitment, including offering new contracts). Also showing signs of tiredness are Zack Clarke and Tom Bell, so Mitchell George and Aaron Atkinson start today with Zack and Tom on the bench. I'm still wrapping Connor Heath up in cotton wool. Connor's probably ready to come back into the matchday squad but I'm not rushing Connor back with Zack Clarke in such a rich vein of form.

Stuniverse
Saturday 9th March 2024 Hemsworth Miners Welfare v Staveley Miners Welfare Northern Counties East League Premier Division Just Football MDC Sports Stadium, Hemsworth -- Another game where our players worked their socks off, showed tremendous character and team togetherness, and got the win when it looked like we were only going to draw. We looked the better team, created some good chances, D'Andre Wainwright with the best of them, heading the ball against the post. But, as has happened a lot during the last few weeks, we struggled to beat their goalkeeper. On 57 minutes, D'Andre Wainwright went off with a tight calf. We took the opportunity to freshen up the right-wing and went more Attacking. On 74 minutes, it worked, when Zack Clarke (who'd wasted a glorious opportunity minutes earlier when he'd shot wide, instead of squaring it to Mitchell George for a tap-in), any way, Zack Clarke redeemed himself by giving us the lead. We changed back to Balanced and looked to see the game out. To be fair, Hemsworth weren't really threatening until, that is, they equalised with a stunning free-kick bang on 90 minutes. Did our heads drop? No, they didn't. I have so much trust and belief in this squad and the players would run through brick walls for each other. We went Attacking, Steven Johnson-Fikula played the ball forward, Zack Clarke flicked it on, and Mitchell George ran in, took a touch, and dinked it over the goalkeeper to restore our lead. That was, and feels like, a massive win for us today! Edited February 12, 2023 by Stuniverse

Stuniverse
Wednesday 13th March 2024 Albion Sports v Staveley Miners Welfare Northern Counties East League Cup Semi-Final The Citadel, Farsley -- We're very disappointed as we felt the Northern Counties East League Cup was a trophy we were capable of winning. Maybe the Northern Counties East League should think about using neutral grounds for Semi-Finals. But that's probably me being churlish because I don't want to take anything away from Albion Sports who outmuscled us in our penalty area to take the lead with a strong 12th minute header and then they defended it with their lives. We had chances, we had a lot of chances, we had a lot more chances than Albion Sports did, but we didn't get anywhere near enough on target and we didn't work their goalkeeper enough. Congratulations to Albion Sports - I hope they go on and win it now. As for us, we have a Northern Counties East League Premier Division title and promotion to win. I've told the players they can feel sorry for themselves, until they get on the coach, and then our focus is squarely on the next match, an FA Vase Quarter-Final at home to Willington.
