The Start

spacer.png

Flashback: We are back in the summer of 2001. This time Sven Goran Eriksson was NOT appointed England manager, but South African Globetrotter Joe Baxter. He has a supposedly GOLDEN GENERATION to work with. Let´s see if he can do better than Sven. The game will be Championship Manager 01/02. (Taking inspiration from @git2thachoppa

The Expectations

spacer.png

spacer.png

In our Qualifying group, Germany are already 6 points ahead but we have a game in hand and there are still some games to play. We can still finish first, qualify automatically and avoid the playoffs. The next game will be against said Germans, in Berlin! After that we will have to home games against Albania and Greece. Our fate lies in our own hands.

The Players

With so many already excellent players and promising young talents -the so-called GOLDEN GENERATION- to choose from it would be a shame to fail with this team.

Paul Scholes

The perfect playmaker at the age of 26.

David Beckham

Still at Manchester United. He already is world class.

Sol Campbell

The Arsenal skipper is our rock in defense. Strong and solid.

Lee Bowyer

A physical monster and a hard worker.

Michael Owen

Already a star at the age of 21.

John Terry

Chelsea youngster on the rise.

Frank Lampard

Another great talent from Chelsea.

Steven Gerrard

Liverpool playmaker.

Alan Smith

Young striker from Leeds.

Rio Ferdinand

West Ham academy product.

David Seaman

Here lies our problem: The best English goalkeeper is 37 years old. It will take some time and much testing and scouting to find a decent English keeper who can replace him. For the time being, he will be called up I guess.

Hello there.

I played CM 01/02 for years, all the time. But I hate it now I know about its weird goalscoring attribute gimmick, which is why Man Utd could sign Henry and have him and Ruud up front and neither will score goals.

Best of luck, you're gonna need it with that bunch of chokers!

Oh... this sounds strange indeed... let´s see if I get that too with England ;)

Thank you!

The Goalkeeper Situation

I did a filter search for the eligible goalkeepers, highlighting the most useful attributes and this is what it all came down to:

spacer.png

Conclusion

Havíng assessed all the candidates, I have come to the decision to call up

David Seaman

Richard Wright

Andy Marshall

for the upcoming matches against Germany and Albania.

I guess this will be David Seaman´s last campaign with the England team. Richard Wright is the youngest keeper with an age of 23, while Andy Marshall is 26. But we are also monitoring the development of Christopher KirklandStuart Taylor and especially Craig Holloway, who seems to be a fantastic talent at the age of 16.

September 1, 2001: The Showdown With Germany

spacer.png

The time has come. We meet Germany in Berlin. Here are the lineups.

spacer.png

We go with a rather attacking tactic. We have to win, so we must be brave.

Spoiler

spacer.png

Our plan worked well! We win in Berlin! A single goal, scored by Ashley Cole, secures our victory against the old rival!

spacer.png

And Oliver Kahn was the Man Of The Match! Tells a lot about how good we were in this game.

spacer.png

The stats show that we were the stronger team. If it wasn´t for Oliver Kahn, we would have won by a higher margin most probably.

spacer.png

The FA was very pleased with the result.

spacer.png

Next: The home game against Albania.

September 5, 2001: The Home Game Against Albania

spacer.png

We use the same attacking tactic against Albania. Lampard replaces Scholes, Hargreaves replaces Barmby and Smith replaces Cole. I thought I´d give the jaded players some rest.

Spoiler

spacer.png

This game was easy. We went into the lead very early through Alan Smith which benefitted us as Albania had to open up and then his strike partner Owen doubled our lead. Super Sub Scholes scored another one for the final score.

spacer.png

Hargreaves scoops the Man Of The Match award this time. It was a good decision to play him instead of Barmby on the left.

spacer.png

They had no shot on target at all. We dominated the match.

spacer.png

So it all comes down to the game against Greece at home on October 6.

This is a little before my time, what was the gimmick?

Wow, impressive performance against Germany.

My favourite run in this game was with Leeds, so I stand by Alan Smith.

Speaking of which, what about Paul Robinson? Isn't he a decent English GK?

I can't even remember it exactly now, but I read it here not too long ago, can't find it now.

There's some silly / hidden attribute that seems to solely affect goalscoring, like Vision or something.

October 6, 2001: The Final Game Against Greece

spacer.png

The starting lineup now includes a finally fit Gary Neville as right back.

Spoiler

spacer.png

A convincing win. The red card surely helped but the important thing is - Germany only won 3-0 against Finland...

spacer.png

...which means we have qualified for the World Cup! Germany go to the playoffs.

spacer.png

We were not the only ones to qualify on that day: Portugal, Belgium and Russia did the same.

spacer.png

The result is clearer than it seems.

spacer.png

Alan Smith once more had a great game.

Pre-World Cup 2002 Phase #1 - World Cup Draw

spacer.png

Brazil! A tough opponent but Paraguay and Tunisia seem beatable if we perform well.

spacer.png

Those are all the qualified teams.

spacer.png

The FA seem very modest with their expectations. Strangely though, they only arranged 2 friendlies to prepare for the World Cup, against Germany in March and against Spain in April.

spacer.png

In other news, Sir Alex Ferguson gets sacked with Manchester United placed 5th in the league.

Pre-World Cup 2002 Phase #2 - ENG vs GER

spacer.png

We want to try out some new players in this game.

Spoiler

spacer.png

It didn´t work.

spacer.png

Germany were the better team.

spacer.png

The new players could not impress, apart from Steven Reid.

Pre-World Cup 2002 Phase #3 - SPA vs ENG

spacer.png

This time we will try our most probable first eleven for the first World Cup match.

Spoiler

spacer.png

Another defeat.

spacer.png

Spain dominated the game.

spacer.png

If it wasn´t for Richard Wright, the margin would have been way higher.

Pre-World Cup 2002 Phase #4 - World Cup Squad Nomination

This is the team that will go to the World Cup. Plus Chris Sutton. There might be some surprises like Michael Ball or Steven Reid but I think they have what it takes.

World Cup 2002 Game 1 vs Brazil

spacer.png

Spoiler

spacer.png

Success! We did not concede and we did not lose the first game against the favorites!

spacer.png

Although Brazil dominated the game, they failed to score.

spacer.png

A great game by Wright and our central defense.

World Cup 2002 Game 2 vs Tunisia

spacer.png

Lampard replaces Scholes and Sutton replaces Smith.

Spoiler

spacer.png

A nerve-wracking win sees us get the 3 points.

spacer.png

The game was very balanced and could have gone either way.

spacer.png

Good decision to play Lampard as he was the man of the match.

World Cup 2002 Game 3 vs Paraguay

spacer.png

Scholes is back in the team and so is Smith.

Spoiler

spacer.png

A crushing defeat. The red card did not help us.

spacer.png

We dominated until the red card and then it all went downhill.

spacer.png

There is only one player to blame for this defeat and his name is Lee Bowyer.

spacer.png

Thank God Brazil was having a nightmare in this group. So we DO qualify for the next round! How bizarre!

World Cup 2002 Second Round vs Germany

spacer.png

Our 3rd encounter in 1 year...

Spoiler

spacer.png

...and this time the Germans prevail. After Penalties of course!

spacer.png

Ironically, we go out after playing our best game of the tournament.

spacer.png

Only a world class performance by their keeper saved the Germans. And maybe our red card.

spacer.png

The FA is already looking ahead.

Post-World Cup Assessment

spacer.png

In a boring final, Holland defeated France after penalties to win their first World Cup.

Best Performers In The World Cup

spacer.png

Steven Reid had a great game against Brazil, sadly he was injured in the 2nd game against Tunisia. He showed he can deliver on the big stage despite his young age.

spacer.png

John Terry came into the first team after Rio Ferdinand was faltering and had 2 good games against Paraguay and Germany despite the defeats.

spacer.png

Richard Wright played all games and has now officially become our new number one in goal. David Seaman has retired from international football due to his age.

spacer.png

They still give me the chance to qualify for the EUROs though.

EURO 2004 Qualifiers

spacer.png

Four Games in and we have won all four of them. The first match of the qualifying campaign against Azerbaijan was the Chris Sutton show: He scored 4 goals and we were off to a great start. The next game seemed way harder as Austria  just finished in 4th place at the recent World Cup. But that was not the case. This time it was Paul Scholes who scored a hattrick. Confidence was high after the first two games and so we thought we´d trash N. Ireland at home. But it turned out a very hard fought match. We had to work a lot and needed an Alan Smith brace to finally get away with 3 points. It turned out this was the right wake-up call because we literally trashed Malta in the next game

spacer.png

This looks good. But we have yet to play Denmark. This will happen next year. We only have one game left to play this year and this will be a friendly against EURO hosts Portugal in November.

The Game Against Denmark (And Azerbaijan too)

spacer.png

We manage to snatch a draw in Denmark. We are still level on points in the table after that game.

spacer.png

We have to thank Sol Campbell for result.

spacer.png

A convincing win against the minnows.

spacer.png

Sutton defies the odds and scores a brace once more.

spacer.png

Denmark is a tough opponent.

The Games Against The World Champions And The World Cup Semi Finalists

spacer.png

We almost won against the World Champions! Zenden saved them from a disgrace in stoppage time!

spacer.png

Our counter tactics worked well.

spacer.png

Back to business. We defeat a strong Austria and get another important 3 points.

spacer.png

Joe Cole is a new name on the England sheet. A great prospect.

spacer.png

Still level on points. Those Danes!

spacer.png

The FA didn´t like the result.

The Decisive Game Against Denmark

spacer.png

Who thought we would wipe the floor with them at home got a reality check.

spacer.png

They were clearly the better team for the whole 90 minutes.

spacer.png

The good thing is, we have so many points we don´t have to go to the playoffs and have qualified directly for the EUROs 2004.

Friendly Time

spacer.png

Those damn Danes again! And France! And      ...Finland! Still, a tough group for us.

Friendly #1 Against Spain

spacer.png

We lose again.

spacer.png

They Keeper saved them. Honestly.

Friendly #2 Against Holland

spacer.png

Lucky for us this time.

spacer.png

When Lee Bowyer is the Man Of The Match, you know what kind of game this has been...

spacer.png

They might be right...

Spoiler

spacer.png

...we have nothing to lose.

EURO 2004 - The First 2 Games

spacer.png

Group Match #1

spacer.png

A double strike by France sinks our boat. But our game was better than expected. There is hope.

spacer.png

We had our fair share of chances but France were the more clever team.

Group Match #2

spacer.png

Now here comes a scare! Being 0-2 down and still managing to win 4-2 is a great showing of perseverance. The 2 late goals were deserved af.

spacer.png

In the end, the sheer number of our chances paid off.

spacer.png

We are still third, but if we win we qualify.

Spoiler

spacer.png

Here we go. Crazy 13 minutes and we are out.

spacer.png

A mediocre game apart from these 13 minutes in the second half. Nothing else happened.

spacer.png

We finish 3rd. Another disgrace for English football.

spacer.png

You know what? Fire me! I can´t stand this anymore!
