Quickly scouting players

How do you guys generally go about scouting and buying new players in preseason? I’ve got to borderline overhaul my squad but I’ve got very little knowledge of the players that come up in my search so it takes ages!

I'm offering trials to guys 30 and 40 at a time.  It's the only way I can gain any scouting knowledge; my club in the 10th division starts with no scouts, and there aren't any interested in joining.  This method probably only works where you've got a huge pool of players (northwest England), most of whom are complete crap (sub-County League level).
