[FM23] Yeah, I’m a Yank, but I know my soccer, uh, football! Part Two - Previous one encountered a crash dump

February 2024

Started out the month by flying to Plano, Texas to take on 23rd place Solar FC. They've been really struggling of late.

Russell Creek Park -  Big surprise playing on another football field.

JV Soccer vs. Hermiston | Soccer | PascoJVSoccer

And we really should've won this match by at least three goals. Been concentrating on finishing in practice, but our players don't have the composure in front of goal.

Forgot to list the standings at the end of January, so here's the update after our win over Solar.

I normally let my assistant, Billy Martone handle practice while I observe, and at times, work with a player one-on-one. But for the next two weeks, I changed up our routine, and emphasized attacking more on two of the days.

image.png.f671af2aec2fee9414e49a76d5664d4d.png

Well, got blindsided by this. Last day of the transfer deadline, and we lose Leon Shaw, who has started 24 of our 29 games this season. He has been solid at right-back. Told me he had family in the San Diego area and decided to make the move. And we get no compensation.

image.png.cc0bc1a415790abaabc3d39a4240bd81.png

image.png.4dfca1c76f205710d2642fb08f7e4008.png

Speaking of transfers, Baltimore just lost their leading goal scorer, Ricardo Gomez, to the Maryland Bobcats who are one level up in the USL2. Gomez had 12 goals in 28 starts for Baltimore. He is now a full-time professional with them, not semi-pro anymore.

image.png.de68b581b9e753f4cb52799b7b43c3c6.png

Joey Bendik comes in to right back to replace Shaw. Alex Harding can also play there, also he's only played as a central defender this season. Henrique Bandeira is in for Ross Shinault, who is not fully fit, but can play. In our last meeting, it was a highly entertaining 3-3 draw.

image.png.ac6fb9e02d20c25652eaf205455b642b.png

image.png.0150c58eecf9bca4936b2ab02dfd40b7.png

And a peach of a pass from Jose Torres to Larry Ruthven who applies a brilliant header as we go up 1-0.

image.png.91182d3dc682f2a8e5e18a1ab69010f4.png

image.png.c8224831e696107126fd47ca3399c54d.png

A breakaway by Jack Henderson made it 2-0. In between goals, I had to replace Samuel Ikoba with Alex Harding, as Ikoba sustained bruised ribs in the 26th minute. And we were lucky in the 45th minute, as a Baltimore goal was ruled offside.

Those two first half goals were all we needed, as both teams were a bit sloppy in the second half. Too many turnovers. I'm excited about the win, and also that we got our 4th clean sheet of the season. A step in the right direction. And we moved up the table to 7th, with a very winnable game coming up against The Villages.

Our track record overall against clubs at the bottom of the table hasn't been great. Need to get a win here.

image.png.c3b1f1010caf6646ab00811db66e7b10.png

Well we "sleepwalked" through the first half. We are consistently bad when it comes to playing the clubs near or at the bottom of the table. Notice the "notable events", none.

image.png.58e80702e1a0cde460eead51a8e577d6.png

We had two good chances in the second half, one on a header from Michael Johnson our sub, and the other on a shot from outside the 18 yard box by Larry Ruthven, but their keeper was up for the challenge. A disappointing draw.

image.png.b2297b1a06e004d9477e89ec6e9b1032.png

And here was a good defensive battle. The Flames are currently in second place. Nice supporter turnout.

Closing out the month with a home game against PA Classics, from Manheim, PA. I'm sure they'll be glad to get to a place with some warm weather.

image.png.570a8d5dfbdbceb9dffc9079bf24747c.png

Despite "laying an egg" against The Villages, I'm staying with the same set up. And yet another club at the lower end of the table, 22nd. Hopefully, we can change our luck against these types of clubs.

image.png.4a7863391168ddff4954d2a263e92e08.png

image.png.cc06230dc265fc91535c5bcbf87e8bce.png

Wonderful header by Jack Henderson in the 23rd minute giving us the lead.

image.png.68f1063233a25e3964c8bc19a1118d15.png

image.png.55ede3795e4a744d0ca7bbf8085b3a64.png

A nice win as Larry Ruthven gets a brace and we get another clean sheet. But this one came at a cost as Dennis Hitchcock, our best player all season, went off with an injury. Keeping my fingers crossed that it's not serious.

image.png.52dabfc2f010f80c9a5bbfe76ae74237.png

image.png.14e005667ba4c6146b6729076f1bad52.png

We like that "home cookin", having won four of our last five. And so much for the "fingers crossed" thing working out. Not good at all.

image.jpeg.2a19cec09009535201c112f506688ebc.jpeg

Like that color green! Maybe that will mean more green in my paycheck someday!

image.thumb.png.ad24d138532d08c04147e833382ea259.png

Looks like practices on attacking setup has helped, and we practice defensive setups every week. Our passing completion has dropped some, as it was hovering around 80-81% in the past. Can't complain though, as we're winning again. Would still be nice though to get those goals per game up.

image.png.ddb097bfa46a80ddc20c62db1bf3904f.png

Not bad sitting in 6th as we finish February. With 14 matches left, nearly impossible to catch Ventura, but there is an opportunity for 5th. And we're finally back in the plus for "goal difference." One match at a time as they say.

Crazy how a few good results can swing you back up towards the top of the table even if promotion looks all but technically impossible.

One thought against the bottom sides - I wonder if having one of your forwards in a supporting role might help. When teams sit deep, it’s much easier to mark two players who are only thinking of scoring than it is to have one drop off - then you have to make a choice about breaking your shape or leaving a man open.

Maybe same with the IW but to a lesser extent. Defenders love to be in a line, it’s the staggered shapes that pose a problem.

A bit of a surprise, and I won't stand in his way if he accepts this position. It's a level below us, but he probably feels he needs to start somewhere.

image.jpeg.d566fd4874a9e759a7548a4eb7b2f0ca.jpeg

March 2nd - Savannah Clovers vs Charlotte Eagles - This match makes me nervous as once again we're playing a club at the bottom half of the table (20th).

image.jpeg.81bdfc12dbadbbe30ebb768df35d1559.jpeg

image.jpeg.3e5c188f175a586abb90a2f365334402.jpeg

After a fairly boring first half, which saw us heading to the dressing room all square at 1-1, we took the lead in the 55th minute on a corner kick, and a nice header by Larry Ruthven. I believe it was just our second goal from a corner for the season. But unfortunately, our defense wasn't up to the task, and we gave up two goals, losing 3-2. Another team we should be beating and couldn't hold the lead.

image.jpeg.a20d2c482c76a3d802720feca6df06f6.jpeg

image.jpeg.4c897430b071fca2ee913320d16fc32e.jpeg

Didn't hold back in the dressing room. Tired of seeing us collapse in the second half on mental mistakes that we shouldn't be making.

image.jpeg.d4eb7acc5ef3b170539d9184975045b4.jpeg

And in other news: This came as a total shock!

image.jpeg.a87aee1be4bc10b2f1b9d0ee5bbd0852.jpeg

Despite the loss, things are still stable with the job. And I got my grade up from a C+ to a B, lol.

I was going to talk to Billy, but his mind was made up. Will start one level below us, but wish him all the best!

image.jpeg.47d953e25949bc0335a79d7aa0b0bcd7.jpeg

I think at times, the only reason this club is put on this planet, is to drive me crazy. We have good practices, only not to have it carry into a game. And we still struggle at times, to play the whole 90 minutes. We have a drop off in intensity and concentration, and it costs us points. And I'm so tired of seeing us give up leads late, or unable to hold a lead. So, with that said, here's our new formation.

Call me crazy but.......

And I know it's tabu to be changing formations too many times during the season, but I need to bolster what is the worst defense in allowing goals in the league.

image.jpeg.f1685f18142b857bc72570d7d055fb08.jpeg

image.png.61e88129355eebfb37b7568a90a7e7ab.png

At least that's what the book says. My lone coach was surprised, as were the players but I need to see if this will work.

March 10th - De Anza Force vs Savannah Clovers - Made the long flight to Saratoga, California, to take on the Force. They play at De Anza College Field, and what a surprise, a genuine soccer field.

image.png.9106d4687bc1b268ded673745e760144.png

image.jpeg.175286c305de6bbafb36a4f0122a781a.jpeg

image.jpeg.0a1bbd5f1204d2113b10555fcd1a47a5.jpeg

We got off to a quick start, as Larry Ruthven fed Jack Henderson with a peach of a pass, and Henderson finished things off.

image.png.ced3e8b52393d73bd9c3ea1cd652c66e.png

We carried that lead into the half, but once again we had a second half collapse, as in the 66th minute, their striker Ben Parmiter scored, and the match finished at 1-1.

The formation I used, did help defensively, but hindered us somewhat on the offensive side. Giving them 28 shots, is a lot, although only six on target, while we had just nine, four on target. I think this is a formation I would use late in the game, either protecting a lead or hoping for a draw when we are underdogs, as was the case in this game. Not sure I'm going to use it to start out in our next match.

image.png.d09c9914d16b6662647c357fe1ef25dc.png

We want to get our solid keeper, Jack Pondy under contract for next season, so started negotiations. Went back and forth a few times before he tentatively agreed to this.

image.jpeg.7fdf5e2fd8612a6b535a9c56c17b52c5.jpeg

And after losing our Head Physio last month, we had promoted Joe Zimmerman, and decided to extend his contract into 2025.

I have to start paying more attention to the "Data Hub." More on the right side where it makes suggestions on tactics.

March 17th - Miami Kendall Rush vs Savannah Clovers - Took the seven-and-a-half-hour bus trip to Miami, to play the Miami Kendall Rush, a club currently in 18th place. We had beaten them at home back in September, 2-0, so I'm hoping we can repeat that here. And they play on an actual soccer field. Huge stadium, Ricardo Silva Stadium.

And it's back to basics!

image.png.67360b28048b5d43be66003bf99f8f71.png

Not much to report in the first half. Our players just look tired. Gonna make some changes at halftime.

image.png.8bcdecaa20e277facc39942fa327fe68.png

I think the fans fell asleep in this 0-0 draw. I subbed in the second half, changed to attack mode, encouraged, nothing worked. Keepers had the easiest day ever.

I like proving the "media experts" wrong. I offered him the position. He's capable, and it's only for three months.

image.png.9a4e7d53f657a21a6f49272f1cdbcfea.png

They are missing a couple of key players. Not sure it will make a difference. We'll see.

image.png.fff34a9d8300c4877a179db99bfc243f.png

Well, he's at least up to 75 minutes, from 60 minutes. I'm going to start him, as we need his mid-field play.

image.png.9e17fe089fef80cd9000ebf6b9e1c2b5.png

image.png.f20d05d6b35ed3a0e496654955e41850.png

Their set up. We're tight marking the striker and pressing the attacking mids.

image.png.91db890bfcec4271ac52f9d2c10ec435.png

Horrible 1st half for us, starting with an own goal, and then going downhill from there. My goal now is to not get embarrassed. Will turn to the "five defender" set up second half.

image.png.8dc05be0bb15ae5117e99a635417bdad.png

image.png.3666bdb7ad2bc9fb230612e822fc566d.png

We made a game of it in the second half, as we got one back early, and had another goal called offside. A rare mistake by our keeper cost us the 4th goal. Definitely played better once I changed the formation.

We got our Assistant Coach.

image.png.c24436beb493143b3b8bd20a9f1caa1c.png

image.png.a78f134b9e3dfe40f530ca715aed916b.png

I'll be offering them all contracts. Mostly 16-year-olds.

image.png.9a3c615ff062a2a37e75fd2f9d89a269.png

And we're in negotiations with Adam Price. The 18-year-old left back has been really good for us this season.

image.png.fad5e422ae202ea8c4895832624e0ec9.png

My tactics against Westchester:

image.png.3184a14f73d7758fb4340e3a71d1eb0c.png

image.png.44f4f08d6def318e96a992bfef16d4f8.png

A big break for us when their left back Corey Fuller received a red card from a rash tackle on Dennis Hitchcock, but we still couldn't break through in the first half. Going to a more familiar "offensive" mode in the second half.

image.png.00e745e7a26071ba65ef96864bbec8d0.png

And what a break again. Just when it looked like a 0-0 draw, a penalty sets up Larry Ruthven's winner in the 91st minute!

image.png.707a68b52dbbd8b1d1b831a45ae3877a.png

image.png.44a218bd816a9fc079af7fb6190cd6bc.png

And we jumped to 7th place with that win! And once again, like in several previous months, we end the month on a high!

April 2024

image.jpeg.684fe91a465932a82cff89d2b08e5bce.jpeg

Our April schedule

image.png.7e2dcccd9f3163688757456cd4145c45.png

Have to think these over, but potential is there for most of them:

image.png.f5ddacaf8bb160ae7510a33ecacc31c2.png

Richmond Utd up next:

image.png.2ce5734731e0d3546b5d6c32f3240f27.png

And somehow still making money!

image.png.a137285bbab5e5932640cea0781bc9aa.png

And this is good news! Henderson 12 goals and 3 assists in 31 league games for us.

image.png.8bcde65f319cb72894b32bd08d3810aa.png

And still satisfying the board.

image.jpeg.430dbbf5e7484d43bc5fc9b8a62777fb.jpeg

And Samuel Ikoba makes it onto the Team of the Week!

image.png.00df33a18ef7da6ecc47022f24b06335.png

And more good news! Now on to win some games!

image.png.5960fac9cb1293b92c73c60a93145041.png

And in other news here in the states:

image.png.733624d4489789e065df4bb8e5a33cca.png

And now, back to that Richmond game:

image.png.1f6a9ac46f432a1e3e68514d3f61761c.png

Going back to this formation as we are the slight favorites.

image.png.f35b98b3d02fdacfbf44310f02f00bbc.png

Breakdown of Richmond per our scouts:

image.png.efc861b8726b86e80cfd247a6c26414c.png

image.png.1f4db779ff27e92036330205a8f13bb5.png

We had two good chances in the first half, but their keeper came up big both times. We're playing good defense so far.

image.png.fb0324133d5dfa58af0744f661c9f36e.png

Even after an own goal by their defender Josh Jensen, it was still nip and tuck the entire second half until Dennis Hitchcock sealed the win for us in the 91st minute.

image.png.9f803ff161b9142838568f0ab4c4f8b3.png

Not really that dominant of a win, but feels good to win at home.

image.png.f83c3e9f8088e7c0c7a6d315d3ee23cf.png

Up next, a revenge match against Reading United, who embarrassed us at home in our first meeting, 1-3.

We also signed all our staff for next season, which includes our Assistant Manager, Coaches, and Scouts. We had already signed our Head Physio.

And thought I'd might try this to get their reaction. Will remember this going into the end of the season!

Staying with this against Reading Utd.

image.png.98ef16cb6f8909117fc1b16a8eae5198.png

We fall behind early on a corner kick of all things, but then in the 28th minute, Henderson does this with an assist from Ross Shinault.

image.png.f96d73079688f55a246e498a84bb53d3.png

Solid first half as Jose Torres scores from in close on a deflection, and we lead at the half 2-1.

image.png.5495c3fc9a692255f0cbedbee01a90e7.png

Gave up the lead in the 65th minute, but a big improvement from the last time we met them. I'll take a draw away from home!

Great read.

Sort of off topic but I was messing around with the idea of doing a low level England save but have never downloaded any of those databases.

I found one that seems to be well accepted but then decided that I was going to go the route of also downloading an Irish one and a Scottish one, but now reading this I'm not so sure that's very smart.  Do you know if that's a real issue where the databases don't play well together?  I really don't want to get into like my 4th attempt at doing a save and have another one blow up in my face.

Hi Blarney,

I would test them together first. My first go at this I had used England Pyramid Down to Level 11 by Dan FM Database, USA 7 Tier Promotion Relegation, the Canadian Megapatch and some others that I don't remember now. I could get to only August of the year I started, and then it would crash. So I started with different combinations to wittle down what would work. I would "go on vacation" and try and "sim" for six months or so. Game would crash, so I'd take away one of the mods, and do it again.

Finally, I decided to start in the US, and when I chose the England Pyramid Down to Level 11 by Dan FM Database, and the USA 7 Tier Promotion Relegation, it worked. I "simmed" for an entire season, and since it didn't crash, that's when I started out my career. I also found quite a few mods that just don't work due to the update of the game. Hope this helps.

Salvador Estrada from distance with his "first ever goal" for Savannah. Huge mistake by their keeper, coming pretty far out, then couldn't backtrack to keep it out!

1-0 Savannah

Both teams hit the crossbar after this goal, but no further damage from either side.

Tremendous win for the club, as we got another clean sheet. Defense was superb, and we even had a third goal called for offside. Flight back to Savannah will be a good one!

Heading down the home stretch, with just five matches left, four in May, and one in June. Team is in good form, hopefully it will continue.

May/June 2024

Here's how the rest of the season looks:

image.png.af92de3861cc009303e0cfd092ad8a61.png

As of May 1st - Mississippi in 12th, Silicon Valley 15th, So. California 21st, FC Westchester 23rd, Flint City 8th

Looking at the Team Dynamics provided to me by the "geek team" down the hallway. Here's what they've found:

Starting this same group over the last six games, has really helped the cohesion of their play. Ruthven and Henderson up front, don't even talk or yell to each other. They know what the other one is going to do it seems.

image.png.0311e4dca2d678e19041bfea9d8675e7.png

This team is playing without fear. Four goals within the first 23 minutes, and the rout was on. Mississippi had to play some youngsters due to injuries and one suspension, and they were getting overwhelmed in the middle. And our finishing has been clinical.

Not sure how we'll finish, but these player ratings are phenomenal.

Not quite as good in the 2nd half, but that was too be expected. Dominant win at home!

A good read, and a genuine question... do lower-league teams in the US really fly back and forth across the country for matches? I don't understand the economics.

Two FMs ago I did a save in Tier 10 of the English pyramid and all teams were located in the north of England, mostly the north-east, and away games were typically an hour away on the team bus. After promotion we were moved into a "central" league and found ourselves driving to away games on the south coast or - worse - Devon and Cornwall. Travel expenses were the club's biggest cost and after half a season we were pretty  much bankrupt. I'm pretty sure that was a flaw in the unofficial database I was using, but it made me alert to the issue in your save.

Actually, they do. The Savannah Clovers are in the NISA with eight other clubs. Fairly new league, hoping to expand. Their first two games, they played teams from Michigan. There are also two clubs in California, located in Los Angeles and San Diego. What I would be concerned about for the league, is the travel expense. First game in Savannah drew 2300, not sure about their second home game.

This mod I'm using, USA 7 Tier Promotion/Relegation, has changed things up some. But I wanted to use a mod that had promotion/relegation. So, it's a move away from reality, but I'm Ok with that. There was another US mod that I tried, but it didn't work with the update. It was more realistic in nature, but hadn't been updated, I guess.

Play for the name on the front of the shirt, and they will remember the name on the back

With just two games to go, they were the words I used after our last practice. We have FC Westchester, currently in 23rd, and already being relegated. Then we have the Flint City Bucks away in Flint, Michigan, who are in 11th place. Won't get 5th this season, but if we can hold onto 6th, I'd be ecstatic! Richmond United have to play first place Long Island next, so hoping Long Island can get a win there.

image.png.e23e8adb4bcb7dad532d5c2674c5f95f.png

These two have been good this season!

We jumped on Westchester early with this goal from in close by Dennis Hitchcock on a peach of a pass from Ross Shinault

image.png.be81b01a6e2658819ec04c9327be77e5.png

We had a couple of more good chances, but their keeper was up to the challenge. Then we allowed a goal on the 31st minute

image.png.4a13803efb28879dd6ee309492d07db6.png

Well, it was anything but pretty, but we got the job done and with some help in other matches, we can get a 6th place finish.

In other news, North Texas gets promoted. League Two is the league one tier above us!

image.png.1feace639461e827b241193884067f6b.png

Well, we didn't get the help we needed. Richmond United did lose to Long Island, 3-1, but Vardar SC out of Detroit, Michigan won't go away. We travel to Michigan for our last match, but against the Flint City Bucks who sit in 8th place. Won't be easy!

We control our own destiny. A win in Michigan, and we'll have that 6th place finish. A loss, and we'll need help from Miami City to beat or draw with Vardar SC.

Things didn't look good early on, as we gave up a goal in the 17th minute, but then this long pass from Price found Larry Ruthven with a first class header to knot the score at 1-1.

And that's where things stood at half time. A real nail biter!

And here's where things stood at half time with Vardar SC leading Miami 1-0 at the half in their matchup.

image.png.e0fde8431ec7917845b05b86020e3e41.png

Great start to the second half, and it was all started by a crucial interception by Larry Ruthven, and then the quick counterattack, and old reliable, Dennis Hitchcock buries it in the back of the net!

image.png.fea3b02d84a3d95dc6f95d404746d609.png

Well, we did it! What a great team win against a tough opponent. Our keeper, Jack Pondy saved the day with a tremendous save on a breakaway with just minutes to go! So proud of the players for their efforts, not only in this match, but for the entire season!  Some people will shrug their shoulders at a 6th place finish, but not me, not with this group! We will definitely celebrate on the flight home!

And although not needed now, after our win, Miami ended up helping us too, with a late goal in the 89th minute against Vardar SC

June 3rd, 2024 - It's Monday, and what a whirlwind weekend! My first season as a manager, and definitely ended on a high note! Helped the club exceed their expectations, certainly learned a lot as the season progressed, and have the confidence that I can pursue a career as a manager, no matter where that leads me. And at 28, still young, with the drive to succeed, and anxious to see what lies ahead!

The team awards come trickling in. Nothing for the manager, but that's Ok.

Big surprise here!

If there's something you want to see in the world, and it doesn't yet exist, go out and make that thing

Ok, stepping back from the fantasy world for a minute, let me get this off my chest! Promotion/Relegation would be a good thing in the US at the lower levels, period!

I totally understand that the MLS operates just like the "big four" sports organizations (baseball, basketball, football, hockey) in this country, and that will never change, nor should it. With MLS franchise fees going for 200 million, no owner is going to want his team to get relegated anytime soon.

In the real world, the Savannah Clovers are in the NISA, a professional league, full-time contracts, with nine teams, first season was 2019/20.

image.jpeg.3216fd386c3c1a1aa27a5d8a36707ef8.jpeg

And here's a look at the US Pyramid, and breakdown of each tier:

image.jpeg.2aa52ce332218eae4835c52ece0dafbb.jpeg

image.png.b4dc2447044fd64beb523e8d713778dc.png

4. After that you have USL2, NPSL, UPSL, and NISA

image.png.ce1b6902654e75ddcd15674747c214d2.png

image.png.0d26f64fadfcd5586df24bcc72d6b8ad.png

My point here is, why not have promotion/relegation from the USL Championship level, on down to MLS Next Pro, or at least to the NISA? As it stands, there is absolutely no incentive for a club like Savannah, to spend extra money, go into some debt, in order to win the NISA. Sure, it makes for great press and PR, but what do they get from their hard work, a trophy, a pat on the back, and we'll see you next season. No prize money, no league money to invest in infrastructure, nothing. Savannah was an amateur club forever, and it was only in 2022 that they applied to be accepted into the NISA.

I live in Savannah, and I've been to one of their two home games, and it was entertaining. At times, hard to watch soccer played on turf, but it was a competitive 1-1 draw with one of the teams from Michigan. And 2300 fans showed up, not bad for their first game. And yes, I played in the CASA recreational leagues, and they had promotion/relegation in three divisions.

Finally, and then I'll get off my high horse. I have contacts that work for the USSF (United States Soccer Federation), and I know how excited they get when a club applies, as Savannah did, to move from amateur status to professional status. And to a person, they say, that while there's a list of items that can help a first-year professional club, nothing would be more powerful than promotion/relegation.

When teams have the ability to move from a lower-division to a higher-division, and chase the sponsorship dollars, and even media rights attached to those higher divisions, there will be no shortage of investors and builders of clubs. And that will be a great thing for soccer at all levels in the USA.

Ok, next post I'm back in my safe, fantasy world, where everything is right!

June 10th, 2024 - It's Monday morning, and I've had some time to contemplate where I would like my future to go. I know that Abraham, our chairperson, is ecstatic about last season, and had offered me a contract for 2024/25. But I "walked away" from it for the time being. That was last week, and it really got me thinking to the point that I started to look and see what else is out there. I decided for now, that I wanted to stay in the USA, as I continued to learn my trade, and hopefully build up my reputation some.

image.png.3f2f709ff6d46e0225addb1603e891a3.png

Here's what was available above our league.

image.png.949544f903b60c0fea2ce797393de06d.png

After thinking long and hard on it, I feel that the next, best move, would be in League Two. Not sure if I'm ready to jump two tiers to League One. Slow and steady is the way to go, I believe.

I had a talk with Abraham, and he wasn't real happy. But I need to do what's best for me. Savannah has a decent team, and maybe we could get a top five next season, but then it's another year in the same league, and chances available now, are gone. And what if we struggle next season, and League Two clubs don't want to take a chance on me? All these things have been running through my head non-stop.

And as far as the League Two opportunities, I ruled out Sockers FC Chicago, too far and way too cold, Madison, Wisconsin, same reason, and LA Force, don't want to be on the West Coast at this time in my career and life.

So, I applied to Ocean City (in New Jersey), FC Delco (which is in Downingtown, PA, where I moved from to Savannah), IMG Academy (Bradenton, Florida), and the Carolina Rapids (Davidson, North Carolina).

All of these clubs have positive and negatives to them, which I will go into, if I get an interview, and an offer.

Uh Oh! Word has gotten out. I'll just have to deal with it, and not leave my apartment, lol

Here's what the League Two standings were for the past season, and where the teams I applied to ended up: Ocean City, IMG Academy, Carolina Rapids, and FC Delco

image.jpeg.a8e044b94983d821c08ed90cccfef1cd.jpeg

June 17th - I have been going through my managerial duties as best I can, while my mind at times, continue to think about the positions I applied to. And I was getting a bit worried, and wondered if me being employed has something to do with my lack of responses? Of all the candidates that are listed as favorited for the various jobs, both League Two and One, only one of them was employed. So, with that weighing on my mind, here's what I did.

image.jpeg.f9421cedee8ef4ce1e42128921a854d8.jpeg

I did feel a sense of relief upon resigning, and now I could totally focus on my future, and to fair to Savannah, it gives them time to find a replacement.

June 24th - It's been exactly a week since my resignation, and I've been visiting family and friends in Pennsylvania, helping a buddy with a move, and oh, yeah, as far as the manager opportunities, here's what has happen, NOTHING.

July 2nd - More time continued to pass, and I was really getting worried. I even decided to apply to Richmond and Charlotte in League One, but to no surprise, my app was rejected. I also applied to the Dayton Dutch Lions in Dayton, Ohio who are in League Two.

But, finally today, I got an invite to interview at the IMG Academy club in Bradenton, Florida. It was a Saturday, which I found odd, but I jumped in the car Friday, and made the six-hour drive to Bradenton. Stayed with a friend there and interviewed the next day.

image.jpeg.e6bd7f0f4fdff9e19f03d85d2f921276.jpeg

I felt the interview went well, no surprises - Payroll (118k), Transfer money (516k), Expectations - Mid-Table

July 6th - Made the long drive back to Savannah on Sunday, and had two emails for interviews, from Ocean City and FC Delco.

July 7th & 9th - Monday interview was with Ocean City, which I flew into Philly, then a two-hour drive there. Later, I drove to my parents place near Downingtown, and interviewed with FC Delco on Wednesday.

Ocean City - Payroll (111k), Transfer money (661k), Expectations - Avoid Relegation

FC Delco - Payroll (127k), Transfer money (686k), Expectations - Avoid Relegation

Three interviews, and I thought all three went very well.

July 11th - Carolina Rapids interview. Located in Davidson, North Carolina. Payroll (284k), Transfer money (518k), Expectations - Avoid Relegation

After four interviews, I was wiped out. I would be surprised if I at least didn't get one offer. Then, I would have to weigh my options. And the start of the league is coming soon. Some clubs have friendlies scheduled as early as July 20th.

July 12th - Friday is here and have some family coming to Savannah to visit over the weekend. I got a voicemail message from Pat Daniels, the Chairperson at IMG Academy telling me to check my email. And here it is:

image.png.aa6df940d0c08c05568f0b58857a0295.png

If I had to list my choices in order, here's how they'd go:

1. IMG Academy  2. Carolina Rapids   3. Ocean City   4. FC Delco

Being an only child, I am very close to my parents, but I really don't want to go back to Downingtown and manage FC Delco. I want to experience a different part of the country, like I did when relocating to Savannah. But with that said, I ask Pat for a week's delay, and he agreed.

July 7th - After family left on Sunday, I received this email. My third choice comes through, and again, I ask to delay.

July 8th - These two offers came through on the same day. I decided to walk away from the FC Delco offer, much to the chagrin of my parents, and delay Carolina.

July 9th - I accepted the IMG Academy offer and after packing, am on my way to my new destination. They offered 51k per year, and I was able to get 52k. Excited about managing in a Professional League, no more Semi-Pro, and hope to keep IMG in League Two this season.

Unfortunately we see the same issue with our own A-League here in Australia.

With no promotion/relegation from the top League, there is no incentive for the clubs that can't make the play offs to invest in the team to fight late in the season. It's quickly becoming known as the Recycle League. There are players who have played for 5, 6, and even 7 clubs, and managers who have been at nearly as many. It's almost like a game of chess where the pieces just keep moving around the board, because you know, they were not good enough to cut it at their previous four clubs, maybe it will be 5th time lucky :onmehead:

We have reached the crazy predicament now where there are some National Premier League (the level below our A League, where there is promotion/relegation) are getting as many, if not more fans turn up, than some of the A League clubs. Not to mention, the broadcast network is a shambles, and most people don't even watch on TV anymore.

It's a pretty sad situation, and a terrible set up.

Wow, didn't know that over there. That is too bad. Don't think it will ever change here. There was a movement back in 2016 that had some steam early on, but that soon died out. Haven't heard anything since then.

I was a season ticket holder with the Newcastle Jets for a number of years. Back then there would be 15k-20k at every home game. Now they are lucky to have 5k show up.

But it's the same with the bigger clubs as well, the crowds have just dropped like a rock, and it got even worse under the new broadcast deal.

Anyway, I will stop derailing your thread with the downfall of Australian Football now

Didn't take long for the media to pick this "new hiring" up:

image.jpeg.860af42f04b543cd78a1d6a7737c434f.jpeg

The IMG Academy started in 1978. It is a monstrous campus for athletic students, which includes year around housing and education. Here's more from their Wiki page.

IMG Academy is a preparatory boarding school and sports training destination in Bradenton, Florida. IMG Academy is set across over 600 acres and features programs consisting of sport camps for youth athletes, adult camps, a boarding school, including a post graduate program, events, professional and collegiate training, group hosting, and corporate retreats.

Nice thing is, we'll be playing on an actual soccer field, which here, is in the background. And such players as Landon Donovan, Jozy Altidore, Michael Bradley, and Freddie Adu have "graduated" from this Academy. And tuition for high school athletes year around isn't cheap, $47,500 per year.

IMG's financial situation is more than stable. Still looking at the squad, and may add some players at some point.

image.jpeg.e226744e212df16889a2c6d9bb4e4cfc.jpeg

Several factors on why I chose IMG over my other offers, one for sure, was they had some staff in place. I'm Ok, working with these guys. They're a slight upgrade from what I had at Savannah. Although currently, we don't have a U23 squad? I did just ask the board for a reserve team.

image.png.21fc5c2831a4b6c9a21073bb27e920b5.png

And here's the squad, at least for now. May have to play the hand I'm dealt for this season! Very young, which could be a concern!

Tactics - This is per my Assistant Coach. Can't imagine I won't be "tweaking" this some.

image.png.e3aa67244eed594856dfd26d48569a91.png

I had my first team meeting today, and when I told the players I expected a mid-table finish, which is what the Board wants, this was their reaction.

image.jpeg.e2a9799717005c1faeecf79fe9810730.jpeg

And here's the feedback from that meeting. I can sort of understand the "leadership support" graded as poor, since I'm brand new on the job. I will work hard to win them over.

Real world kickin in - Headed out of town for a few days to visit family. Will be back to this "fantasy world" on Monday

So, my chairperson, Pat Daniels calls me into his office, for what, I had no idea? Tactics session? Transfer update? Thoughts on the IMG Academy campus? Nope! It was to get my opinion on what mascot(s), we(he) would be best to have at our home matches? Really.

Yes, folks, it is America! Land of the free, home of the brave, and a collection of some of the dumbest looking mascots on earth. And what soccer(football) club has mascots. Very few, if any in Europe. Maybe Yeovil Town, so that the mascot can distract from the awful football they play every weekend. But this is what the "kids like, Pat says. Really. So, when we're losing 6-0, the "kids" won't care because one of these dumb looking mascots gives them hugs and makes things all better. I told him I'm sure his choice would be whatever is best for the club. Then I high tailed it out of his office.

Back to the "really" important stuff! One thing I like at this level is the amount of training we can do. No more once, or by some miracle, twice a week. Everyday leading up to the friendly on Saturday.

image.png.6fd61f1db3e0c19b5ad30182e1ba2c71.png

The reason my man Jose Luna oversees all scouting tasks, because he's the only scout. I do have an offer out to the only other scout I could find that was interested in coming here, lol.

image.jpeg.96080305bdc7f7ad4d28058ffb82a781.jpeg

And always comforting to know that three of your better players want to leave town. Need to get busy in the transfer market.

Our matches through August:

And we got another scout

Well, not hated yet, lol

July 20th - Friendly against Orange Count FC, who are in our league. Going with a 4-2-3-1. Why, I dunno, that's what we practiced all this week. Supposedly, they're familiar with this formation and was suggested by my Assistant Manager. Although, I have to keep reminding myself, the club finished 17th last season.

image.png.e38527adf51e56a1c81f259b5628ee2a.png

Well, a couple of things I found out in the first half. I now know why we finished 17th, and this formation is not going to be around very long. In fact, I'm changing things up at half-time. I also need to bring some of the U23 players up for these friendlies to see if any of them can play.

image.png.baa2ed80a4c2e6421a88c9f3faf122c5.png

Changed to a 4-3-3 for the second half

image.png.b05a0d0200749939e832237072222c8c.png

We only LOST the second half 2-0. Better defensively, but couldn't score. A lot of work to do with this team.
