Very proud. We were a bit lucky against ASSE in a very even game but edged it 2-0 and then went on to smash Rennes 3-0. Proper writeup coming up!

2029-2030: Season recap

Ligue 1

An excellent season ended unbeaten and with a trophy as we lifted our first Ligue 1 title with three games to go. ASSE put up an excellent fight but started faltering a little in the second half of the season and we profited to the max. Because we beat them in the prelast game of the season, they even lost their second place to PSG in the end.

Standout performers were Vardanyan who played as a striker and netted 22 goals and new guy Paulo, supporting him from attacking midfield and only doing slightly worse with twenty roses. But the real heartbeat of the team was Phanouvong, who bossed play in the carrilero position, averaged 7.48 and provided five goals and nine assists as well.

Champions League

A solid league phase saw us through to the knockouts, where we eliminated Ajax despite going 2-0 down at home in the first 45 minutes. We then went on to be narrowly eliminated by Bayern, who will play the final against Chelsea.

French Cup

We made it to the semis but then lost away in Monaco on penalties, one of the few things we are not very good at (missing three out of five in the league as well).

Finances and facilities

No changes to the facilities, and a very healthy bank balance of 115M guarantees a 74M transfer budget now. We made a very hefty net transfer profit of 60M, plus another 20 from one of Tissier's clauses as he got his fifth appearance for the French national team.

Tactics

For those who are interested, we didn't stick with the flat 451 but went assymetric in the end and never looked back. Some excellent build up play from the back and very entertaining to watch in the final third. I'm hoping to bring in a better striker to see if we can even step it up a bit more as Vardanyan is far from world class.

The team that won the league

Goalkeeper

Johnny Renteria was outstanding this season. The Colombian conceded only half the amount of goals compared to last year, and kept nineteen (!) clean sheets in the league, only topped by Chevalier from ASSE with twenty. He has the highest xG prevented and the highest save percentage as well. By no means a world class goalie, but a very, very good shot stopper.

Right back

Cruz still featured in eleven game but got slowly replaced by academy product Herrmann. They both had an excellent season, providing an extra passing outlet in midfield and regularly surging into the opposition sixteen yard box to cause havoc and confusion.

Left back

The same story at left back where Montoia had to make way for Gicquel. The former will leave on a free at the end of the season, joining OL, which means we'll be in the market for a replacement. Although I'm happy with Gicquel's performances, I feel the position could do with improvement if the opportunity arises.

Center back

Araujo and Cavallo, after the departure of Cervantes back to Mexico, provided a really stable anchor at the back. Recalling Cavallo from loan has been a masterstroke as the young Argentinian did really well, averaging 7.21. At only nineteen, the best is clearly yet to come for him. Araujo was impressive too, although I would like to find someone better sooner or later.

The wings

We played around a bit with these positions during the year. I started Apaza on the left in the playmaker role but he didn't really make too much of an impact. We only really got him going once we moved him to the right after Besse left during the winter break, with Oprsal claiming the left wing. In the end, he produced his best Nancy season to date with eleven goals and nine assists. We also witnessed the emerging of young Spaniard Fortuny here.

The DLP

Young Cilia started in this position but despite him not playing badly, I felt we could do better so we searched the market in January and brought in Uruguayan orchestrator Vaz. He kicked us into another gear, contributing with five assists and a goal in the second half of the season.

The carrilero

As stated earlier, the heartbeat of the team. Phanouvong has been nothing short of amazing. Always in control, never a bad game and a ridiculous threat both with his passing and his long range shooting. Arsenal wants him but I'm hoping to keep him around a while longer. Rotated him with Kaba and Matazo but managed to keep him fit as he played 33 out of 34 games.

20230702175422_1.thumb.jpg.7e7ffc9bab068efc30b957c15eabbd0e.jpg

The attacking midfielder

Paulo. Paulo, Paulo, Paulo. What a player. Instrumental, just like Phanouvong, with twenty (!) goals in the league. Never absent, despite labeled as injury prone. Best buy of the year I think.

After him, In case of an offday, young Fevre also stepped up when required. Not a world beater, but a very handy rotation option who always seems to perform rather well.

The striker

In quality our weakest position with a retrained Vardanyan and Kroupi, but the former did amazingly well and bagged 22 goals. No complaints about Kroupi as a backup either!

Probably the position that most needs an upgrade though.

This season will be a bit of a transitioning one in some positions. We'll be overhauling the squad with players who are not yet there but have lot of potential, replacing some regulars who have peaked and who will be sold if the opportunity arises.

Before the start of the new transfer season, we already arranged the arrival of two young attacking midfielders. Both will go on loan if all goes well, hopefully to see them capable of taking over from Paulo as I'm assuming that the big clubs will come for him eventually. Mikkel Byrvang joins from Brondby for 8.25M, while 17-year old Frank Anaba comes over from Nantes for 8.5M.

20230710160859_1.thumb.jpg.26e10efdb85cacf3e27d681eb1dd1dee.jpg

We also bring in a young versatile German on a free from Liverpool, who will spend this season on loan at Augsburg. We'll possibly retrain him as a striker.

20230710161329_1.thumb.jpg.8f3734ba5bb1dedbb9c3f9f7d558f5ad.jpg

Speaking of strikers, 19-year old Sayah is signed from Caen for 3.6M and will play in the Bundesliga 2 this season, for Ingolstadt.

20230710161544_1.thumb.jpg.cacd521d0b8204a6eeb4132dd577f67f.jpg

We also shop in Eastern Europe, where we found Matej Jerebic for 1.6M at Olimpija. I kept him on loan there but it's possible that I'll recall him before the end of the transfer window. I was planning on playing Apaza on the right, but because of Oprsal's injury that plan is off the table and as Erbogast left the club, we need some more depth.

20230710161626_1.thumb.jpg.39a33b595b8a811cb17355fa87fcfa92.jpg

Finally, as we look to move on Renteria (who is under a 42M bid from Mainz), we bring in his replacement with 18 year old Roberto Murillo from Sociedad in an 8.25M deal. Young Pereira is still the future but he's nowhere near good enough for the first team yet so needs more loan gametime to get there.

20230710162014_1.thumb.jpg.80bef23f9b8ab1758cb502a2a10bb4eb.jpg

Oh, and because of Oprsal's injury, we also bring in a free agent with little risk. Released by Juve but did quite well at Bordeaux last year in the Ligue 2.

20230710162050_1.thumb.jpg.152db16fc7d1f5b680b5b48e90c30d0c.jpg

On the outgoing side, quite a bit of deadwood leaving the club. Ehlers leaves on a free to Vigo, Montoia to OL (who we'll need to replace at left back as we have only Gicquel left), and Arbogast to Werder. Renteria is on his way out to Mainz (hopefully), and at the end of the transfer window we'll probably have over a dozen players out on loan.

Great finds as always, good to see you continuing with this.

In little bits, very busy at work and we'll start moving  into our new house in two days as well. Plus, I was a bit burnt out after winning the title, had something similar in my Orléans save in FM21. :) But we're slowly getting back on track.

Another addition to the silverware cabinet! Renteria put in a MotM performance and we scored twice from some very clean play. The first goal came from Apaza setting up left back Gicquel into space, who then put it low in front of goal where Moahé, our academy striker, put it into the far corner with his left. The second was a very nice counter attack which ended with Paulo playing a one touch ball behind the defence and Vardanyan, who came on for Moahé, timing his run perfectly to put it past Donnarumma.

Excellent to see you picking this up again  And congrats on beating PSG :D

Thanks! Not sure if I'll continue it though, got my mind set on something else/bigger. I usually only do one club saves, haven't done a journeyman in ages. But I'd like to do a start unemployed and win every continental competition across the world.

I'm getting a badass new laptop in a day or two though, so I'm waiting until then so I can fire up all those leagues in one go hopefully.

The transfer window is about to close so it's time for an update. Renteria refused Mainz but Salzburg provided another way out for 38.5M. Murillo went out on loan, just like Pereira, so we promoted young Abdelli to first team goalkeeper, although he's unhappy after being refused to join Fiorentina. Apart from that, a lot of outgoing loans and a permanent deal for Mukiele to Reims for 1.3M and 50% on future sale.

20230712205436_1.thumb.jpg.e31d178fe93066f842ee6714c81ffe23.jpg

On the incoming side, a young Icelandic kid from Kobenhavn who I thought was a left back but actually isn't. As this means our problem on the left hasn't been fixed, we recall Gabin Levy from loan to provide some depth.

Yeah, so I gave it another try but I'm done. It's only getting frustrating from here on out. The drop was another loss of points in Valenciennes in another game where we couldn't seem to hit a barn door. I'll think about that new save, maybe. :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Just a heads up, I'll be writing this up somewhere before our holiday to Norway, which starts on the 11th. :)

In the meantime, feel free to follow up on my new challenge, where I'll try to win both the five major continental tournaments worldwide (Champions League, Copa Libertadores, CONCACAF, CAF and ACFC). On top of that, I'll also try to win the equivalents for nations, AND the World Cup. More importantly, I'll try to do it with clubs that have never won the tournament before (with the exception of nations).
