Use Knockout round league stage to set final positions

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm running into a problem while creating a new pyramid for the Football in my country (Brazil).

As the league is, the 5 best teams goes to Libertadores, 6th and 7th goes to Libertadores preliminary rounds and 8th to 13th goes to Sudamericana.

However, I divided the league in two groups and the champion is decided in a two legged knockout round between the 8 best of each group.

This is creating a situation where the 4 best teams might not be between the best of the group stage and this team would miss a direct spot in Libertadores group phase or not be classified to it.

I created a workaround where I add all the results in a overall table, but I still can have a best 4 outside of the spots in the overall table, and maybe a champion that doesn't go to the Libertadores as well (I intend to brute force this later to see)

So, how can I set the 16 places according to the knockout stage to be the ranking that Libertadores and Sudamericana pulls to set the classified teams to the next season?

If needed, I can add the file later, I'm not at home now.

There's a stage flag "use playoff rankings" for the league/group stages. Under "league settings" you can also use the "other league stage flag" of "don't set league positions for ranking levels". You can also untick the box for "top team are champions". If it doesn't work from there then you'll need to manually set ranking levels for each stage, which isn't too difficult

Thanks, I'll try those and post the feedback.

None of those worked, I'll try setting ranking levels. The teams are still qualifying from the group stage.

So, I created the ranking levels but also tried adding some continental qualification through this part:

I know that right now, the top 3 are being correctly qualified for the group stage. But the other ones (including the Sudamericana spots) are still being given according the group stage.

I had a 7th place reach semifinal and they should be awarded the spot, but missed continental football altogether by being so low in the table.

Can you post the file? Or the ranking levels for each stage (including league) and the competition itself? If I poke around at it I might be able to see another setting I'm forgetting to mention

I can do both.

Ranking Levels for the group stage:

Ranking Levels Info for knockout:

I wouldn't use "ranking level info" for the cup, just ranking levels for each stage (final has winner = 0, loser = 1 etc). If the top 8 teams in each group advance to the playoffs, they should all have highest = 0, and lowest = the lowest playoff ranking (I guess 4 for round of sixteen losers). Then ninth place would have rank 5 (no need for highest or lowest because their competition is done). Make sense? Those stage flags will work with the ranking levels set, I have it that way for San Marino but even more complicated. Try that out and if it doesn't work I can clean up the rankings in there

I cleaned up like you suggested, and barring one change where a team supposed to be on the Libertadores was on Sudamericana, and vice-versa (8th and 9th, according to my calculations), the teams where all qualified. As the champion of Libertadores and Brazilian Cup was the same team that had a 4th spot (direct spot on group phase), maybe in the transfer of those two spots, it went for the best non-qualified team on the group stage, as normally, by Brazilian rules, overlapping spots goes to the highest positioned team in table not qualified to the competition. I will run another simulation until I get a non-brazilian team winning Libertadores and a hopefully, a team that isn't qualified for Libertadores also won the Cup. However, this is the time that it got closer to what I want.

Thanks for the help, and if you have any insight on the situation above, it would be appreciated, as this is the last issue I have to solve for it to be ready.

Oh yeah that's an odd one. Is it the same download link as above? I can take a look. Sounds like we're on the right track though

I did some tweaking and it is working properly now, Thanks for the advice, it helped so much.

Excellent!! I haven't downloaded it yet but if you still need anything looked at then I can do so. Ranking levels are a pain but once you get the hang of it, they're very helpful in making competitions act the way you want.

You might be able to get away without using that "continental cup rules" section at all in that case. But if you do keep it, I know rusty is more of an expert on that

I got rid of that when I scrapped the ranking levels info, because I noticed they weren't working properly. I'm only using the ranking levels.

Great. For more convoluted tournaments you can use "ranking level info" for the competition itself (near the bottom, not for the individual stages) to clarify what certain outcomes mean. In a straight league I don't think it's necessary because the game can tell when it's mid-table, but in a more complex set-up like yours you could use it to confirm that 3rd overall (so semifinal losers) made it to the semis, 4th overall made it to the quarters, 5th overall the round of 16, 6th overall (the two group teams who missed out) were "competitive in this competition" or something like that, etc. Might affect board confidence and end-of-season news item type stuff if they look off now
