The Case Study: Job 8: St. Louis City (On Break)

I have been sacked by Watford after just over nine months in charge, yeah the squad was worse than what I thought it was and Gino Pozzo's way of running the club in terms of scouting is about doing things on the cheap. With a few more quality additions and a bigger wage budget we would be higher in the table, but the rot starts at the top. So this is what I can say. I came into pretty much a very difficult situation, where the playing squad thought they were way better than they were and the results don't lie.

I often flick through other threads and I've looked at this one - where you've taken Basel to ninth place and Watford to 21st - as well as your old one where you had nine jobs in ten years and was sacked at most places: it makes me ask, why? How are you setting up tactically to fall on your face this often? How do you approach each game? I'm not trying to dictate how you play nor saying I am in any way better than you - just asking as I certainly would struggle to find enjoyment following the career path that you've had.

In the previous thread, "Do I know where I am going?", I set up in a very Sean Dyche-esque way where the football is attritional, boring and is based on marginal gains. So the style of play was like if I go 1-0 up, I will sit back and defend. This one is more like what the best suited tactic is according to my assistant manager and I just play the game naturally without any interference on my end. Even the substitutions that I make are suggested by the assistant manager. The Basel stint, it is very misleading. So I had a lot of wins at the start and towards the middle of the season, at around February, results were crap, so basically I got sacked for a bad month. The Watford stint, my God, the players are overrated. There was no team cohesion and I was grinding out wins and draws whenever I could, it was only towards the end of my tenure that I went on a mad losing streak. My replacement Malky Mackay is not doing any better and they are now at the bottom of the Championship needing a miracle to survive as they are still within touching distance of survival in the Championship.

We now have a new job. I am now the manager of Sunderland. Sunderland, is obviously a huge club and were pretty much mainstays in the Premier League for a long time until their decline when they went to League One. They are now back in the Championship and are hoping for better times and here I am hoping that I can bring it back. This is what the squad looks like.

  • Sahaj Oberoi changed the title to The Case Study: Job 3: Sunderland

We have started off our job at Sunderland with a couple of wins in the league, really happy about that. We also confirmed the permanent signings of Josh Wilson-Esbrand from Manchester City for 28 million pounds after his loan spell at Sunderland and Xavier Simons from Chelsea for 6 million pounds after his loan spell too.

A lot of transfer activity has happened lately. Jewison Bennette has gone to West Ham for 6.5 million pounds. Niall Huggins has gone on loan to Cambridge. Nikola Maksimovic has gone to Al-Shamal for 2.6 million pounds. Abdoullah Ba has gone on loan to Nancy. We have got two new signings on loan. Mauro Bandeira has come to Sunderland on loan from Arsenal and Caleb Watts has joined on loan from Southampton.

To add to Ben's point - it is actually refreshing to see a career thread where the player doesn't always win, keep up the good work my friend!

But I do have one other question - in all of your threads I've read so far, the amount of injuries to your players is just enormous. Do you have some insane training schedules, or is it just your luck?

Thanks. I don't think the injuries happen that often, it is just that I post an update about it when it happens so maybe because of that it looks like my players get injured a lot. But yes, small injuries, they happen quite a bit.

We will face Grimsby in the Carabao Cup first round. Also there are a few transfers that have happened. Luke Mbete has joined Sunderland on loan from Manchester City. I bought my former player from Watford, Dylan Levitt for 10.5 million pounds to Sunderland. Also Jack Clarke went to Watford for 6.75 million pounds and Daniel Ballard went to Al Wahda for 7.5 million pounds.

We drew in the opening league game of the season and we have progressed to the next round of the Carabao Cup after winning against Grimsby on penalties. Also Shea Charles joined on loan from Manchester City and Marshall Burke moved on loan to Bolton and Marvin Zeegelaar moved on loan to Charlton Athletic.

Pierre Ekwah has gone on loan to Western United in Australia. We have two more loan deals we have completed. Omari Hutchinson and Harvey Vale have joined Sunderland on loan from Chelsea. We lost our first league game this season and we also progressed to the next round of the Carabao Cup after beating Fleetwood on penalties.

Three board meetings in succession means that we are facing a fight to keep our job here at Sunderland but a draw against Swansea who are flying high in the league eases the pressure just a bit. We need to win games to properly ease the pressure on us.

Oof looks bad for your future with Sunderland. What were the board expecting from you this season?

The owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus expects me to be very ambitious. With the current state of the squad, we need to sell to buy so we have to build very slowly, so I am also in the process of promoting youngsters hoping that things will work out, but right now we are in a rut.

Board meeting after board meeting means that we are under huge pressure to turn things around here at Sunderland. We absolutely need something to work in our favour. I am preparing for the next transfer window to strengthen the squad so that we have a chance of surviving in the league.

We have got a win after a very long time in the league and yeah the owner of the club completely slashed the transfer budget because of an inability to manage finances properly and a worse than expected financial performance, so we have to sell to buy. Robbie Fraser has joined Sunderland on loan from Rangers.

Some transfer business has been done. Alex Bass went to Huddersfield for 89k pounds. Dan Neil went to Hearts for 950k pounds. And, Joel Burgess joined Sunderland on loan from Bolton Wanderers. Things have improved marginally but we still have a lot of work to do to salvage the season.

Few transfers have happened. Charlie Blackwell has gone to Nottingham Forest for 200k pounds. Leon Dajaku has gone to Al-Orobah for 325k pounds. Daniel McIntyre has gone on loan to Newport County. Dennis Cirkin has gone on loan to Lugano. We also forced a replay in the FA Cup against Southampton.

We have brought in a couple of players on loan. Elkan Baggott has joined Sunderland on loan from Ipswich Town. Also, Alex Robertson has joined on loan from Manchester City. Our league form is suffering and we are on the brink. We need some confidence injected into our team.

Our form is spiraling out of control and we need something, anything to inject some confidence in this Sunderland squad. Also, Tyler Onyango joined the club on loan from Everton and Daniel Obolo went on loan to Bromley. Marvin Kaleta has gone on loan to Altrincham. Also, Omari Hutchinson, Harvey Vale, Caleb Watts and Mauro Bandeira's loan deals are now over and they have gone back to their parent clubs. We have been knocked out of the FA Cup as well.

I have been sacked by Sunderland after just over 9 months in charge. Slightly better experience than Watford, ultimately couldn't turn things around in the end. We had to sell to buy, so there were a lot of good players that left just in order to balance the books. This was a better experience, it was not due to a lack of effort, the players gave their 100%, it just wasn't to be.

  • Sahaj Oberoi changed the title to The Case Study: Unemployed

We now have a new job. I am now the new manager of New York City FC in the MLS. It is a way out of English football. And NYCFC is a very fascinating club. I went to their stadium in real life and the passion the fans were showing is great. It is a different model of working compared to the English game and I am fascinated about the type of players we will have at the club. It is a good way to develop my craft in management and I am hoping for a good learning experience. This is what the squad looks like.

  • Sahaj Oberoi changed the title to The Case Study: Job 4: New York City FC

We played our first couple of games as the manager of New York City FC. It did not start off with a winning start. We also signed Dorlan Pabon on a free transfer until he was waived later in a matter of a couple of days. (Yes, MLS rules, I know and I am still getting used to it.)

Our start to life as the manager of New York City FC has been shaky, we need to respond quickly, some of these players are talented but we need that clinical edge especially in front of goal. We signed Dennis Taylor and Oscar Opazo on free transfers.

We initially signed Roberto Pereyra on a free transfer and then he was waived a couple of days later. Also we got Jalen Hawkins after he was waived by Cincinnati. And we got Fashion Sakala from Atlanta United in a trade deal in which Diego Fagundez moved from NYCFC to Atlanta Untied. We also are holding our own in games but we need that bit of luck to win games.

The wins have started to come finally for this NYCFC side. 3 in a row and I am really happy, hopefully we can keep the good times rolling. Timothy Jarvis went to Vancouver FC for 4.9k pounds.

Luis Diaz (not the Liverpool one) went to Houston on a trade deal and we claimed Xavier Valdez on waivers from Houston. The Leagues Cup draw has happened, we have FC Dallas and Atlas, from Mexico in our group. We also lost the league game against Minnesota.
