Viking (Norway) v SK Sturm Graz (Austria)

Friendly

--

01_Sturm_01a.png.7274fff05e67a6ed52d8d9da706a6987.png

In our last pre-season friendly before our 2035 Eliteserien campaign starts, we face SK Sturm Graz at home in our SR-Bank Arena.

01_Sturm_03_fitness.png.75ae8e6d756c293662a572e7dea17314.png

We only have Jan Rune Hansen ruled out through injury, but...

01_Sturm_03_INT-duty.png.9a4d64daf450e60025ca0f7c9519bc6a.png

... we have eight first team players unavailable today as they are away on International duty.

In our final pre-season friendly, with so many players away with their Nations, I thought we were phenomenal against Sturm Graz today.

Although it's hard not to think of it as the Bill Freeman Show.

In the second half, after we made our substitutions, we lost our way somewhat but I'm not going to quibble after a comfortable home win.

Welcome back @phnompenhandy

That's quite some progress you've made.

Thank you. I never expected to be spending so long at one club, about to start my eighth season at Viking but, as I've said many times before, I'm loving it here at the SR-Bank Arena in Stavanger.

Persistence pays!

It certainly does.

Four Eliteserien titles, three Cupen wins, and currently on our best ever run in the UEFA Europa League having twice lost in the Round of 16 to Villarreal (2029) and Utrecht (2033).

I'll try.

Jasper Torkildsen is the current captain with Jan Rune Hansen as vice-captain.

I'm very happy with how last season went and Jasper and Jan Rune did very good jobs.

My Assistant Manager, Egil Ulfstein, thinks we should make Anders Hartveit Ryste vice-captain.

02_Sarpsborg_02a.png.b0a36776391b06e48033bb1d81c32d22.png

We've had a very good pre-season and reached the Quarter Finals of the 2034/35 Europa League so, yes, we're in confident mood and raring to go.

It's great to be able to kick-off the new season in front of our amazing de mørkeblå supporters inside the SR-Bank Arena.

02_Sarpsborg_02b.thumb.png.cecf214445b67c0b8f36074975739cce.png

Henrique Araújo is a player we've followed closely for as long as I've been here. At Bodø/Glimt, Henrique was always right up there at the top of the Eliteserien goalscoring charts.

We made enquiries at the start of pre-season, as we've done most seasons, and the feedback we got was that Henrique wasn't interested in a move away from Aspmyra.

But then we got wind in the last week of the transfer window that things might have changed. We followed it up and I'm delighted Henrique has decided to join Viking.

02_Sarpsborg_02c.thumb.png.5431efc2ea4d9bdea14c4b2fbea273e1.png

We were runners-up in my first season here, then we won Eliteserien three seasons on the spin, before finishing second and then a disappointing fourth.

We were thrilled to regain the Eliteserien title last season and we want to retain it this year. It will take a lot of hard work but we know what it takes and we strongly believe we've got what it takes.

02_Sarpsborg_02d.thumb.png.a28c48a067569caf7044e49bfc12dd15.png

I don't think I have a strongest team. What we have is a group of quality players and we'll need them all throughout what will be another long, hard season, and everyone will have to play their part if we're to be successful in all competitions this season - Eliteserien, Cupen and European Club Competitions.

You only have to look at the calibre of players who've missed out on the matchday squad today, for one reason or another, to realise how strong this Viking squad is.

02_Sarpsborg_04c.png.a5c8c608f7745d0c918039a8854bf9f8.png

It's going to be a challenge trying to keep everybody happy but it's what's best for the team, rather than the individual, that counts.

02_Sarpsborg_02e.thumb.png.dc008fbe632ff03c465e4099d43adc66.png

We're very close to a clean bill of health.

02_Sarpsborg_09a.png.1792163e016ac4c14053a575246a650d.png

It's a new season. We have new players, Alexander Frei has new players at Sarpsborg, I don't think what's happened in the past has any bearing on the outcome.

We're just relieved to have kicked-off with a home win because Sarpsborg made it very, very, very difficult for us today. For the first 15, maybe 20 minutes, we struggled to get the ball out of our own half but then we settled and started to take control of the match.

02_Sarpsborg_09b.png.7b0c890813d12ede6c3ce55a190cc981.png

The officials call decisions how they see them. Some go our way, some don't. If Alexander Frei is suggesting we get favourable treatment I can assure him we don't.

02_Sarpsborg_09c.thumb.png.9aa6a2002bd814e3c5faa6de1b66a56d.png

Look, to be fair to Alexander Frei, it looked soft but there was contact on Anders Hartveit Ryste from behind.

The referee gave the penalty straight away. VAR reviewed it and agreed with the referee's on-field decision. So it was a penalty.

And we were relieved when Anders Hartveit Ryste picked himself up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to break the deadlock.

02_Sarpsborg_09d.thumb.png.67e847ec8da9e80ba5538c79ea1c1231.png

We needed our supporters today, I thought our de mørkeblå fans were tremendous today, because it was a very tough game.

Against the run of play, I admit, Ove Benjamin Modell crashed the ball against the bar after 19 minutes.

We created plenty of chances after that, but didn't test their goalkeeper enough.

I thought we were on top though by the time Anders Hartveit Ryste scored from the penalty spot.

Henrik Skogvold headed against the bar just before half-time.

After the break, I thought we looked far more like us and controlled the game.

Sarpsborg didn't create much, but when they did they looked dangerous and caused us problems, so we were delighted when Anders Hartveit Ryste scored his, and our, second goal, pressing high and seizing on a mistake by their central defender.

A win's a win and we're up and running for the season.

It's a great honour to be the last Norwegian club standing in Europe and we aim to do ourselves and our country proud.

03_Tottenham_02b.png.91c05636c8629a3ecd21ec7c3fb5949c.png

We've never played Tottenham Hotspur before but had three very tough matches against another English team, Brighton & Hove Albion, in the Europa League League Path and the two-legged Round of 16.

Against Brighton we won one, drew one and lost one so we're expecting a very difficult first leg in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Hans Jørgen Solberg has been back in training and seems fine but, after twisting his knee, Hans Jørgen will be on the bench and, hopefully, we won't need him tonight.

I thought we'd battled well first half and deserved to go in level at the break so for Tottenham to break the deadlock in the 43rd minute was a hammer blow.

And the way we conceded it, the initial shot was well blocked by Ove Benjamin Modell, but the ball rebounded and hit Aleksander Liland, and fell nicely for the Mark Wilson to score via a deflection off Aleksander Liland.

On 52 minutes we did get the ball past Norwegian goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson but Bill Freeman's effort was disallowed for offside.

I'll admit, we were hanging on by the end. Tottenham hit the bar and Tinius Sundell did briliantly to clear one off our goalline.

But we're only one goal down and it's all to play for in the second leg at our SR-Bank Arena.

I am surprised how your finances are so poor even with all the European TV Money.

I think that's because we had some lean years in Europe recently where we didn't do as well as we perhaps should have done... usually qualifying for a playoff and then getting knocked out.

2033/34 | Champions League League Path Playoff (Benfica) | UEFA Europa League Rd of 16 (Utrecht) |

2032/33 | Champions League KO Playoff (Celtic) |

2031/32 | Champions League KO Playoff (Feyenoord) |

2030/31 | Champions League Quarter Final (Arsenal) | - I think at this point, our bank balance was just shy of £40M and it's dwindled away since then.

Daniel Daga played for Strømsgodset for eight or nine seasons and I hope their supporters remember what a great servant to their club he was.

On opening day, Strømsgodset lost 0-1 away to Lillestrøm so they'll be desperate to get a win at home in the Marienlyst Stadion.

It's up to us to go there, perform as we know we can, and spoil Strømsgodset's party.

Henrique Araújo showed exactly why we were so keen to sign him. I thought Henrique and Bill Freeman were our best two players today.

Daniel Daga did well against his former club.

As for the rest... I'm lost for words... Next question.

04_Stromsgodset_09b.thumb.png.acb7560eac419619e4d73ef4438fde27.png

I think you have to give Strømsgodset and their manager Petter Sjåholm a lot of credit but this was just one of those freak games you can't really explain.

Except I can. Going forward we were very good but defensively we were very, very poor and I'm not happy about it.

Strømsgodset's first goal... we had three if not four chances to clear it and failed to do so.

For their second, we gave the ball straight back to them twice in the build-up and then left the scorer unmarked in the six-yard box.

If you give Strømsgodset a two-goal lead after six minutes then they are going to take advantage.

We kept going though. Henrique Araújo pulled a goal back. Strømsgodset's goalkeeper Kike Moreno made some fine saves.

Then we thought we had a penalty when Daniel Daga was fouled in the box, but it wasn't given, and then we lost concentration as Strømsgodset go down the other end, win a corner, and score from it with a free header.

At half-time I made three substitutions, both full-backs were on yellow cards, and went more Attacking.

04_Stromsgodset_12_46mins.png.6cc864a6619b9f231d173b8bf56aa14a.png

We created chances and goals from Henrique Araújo and Bill Freeman had us level five minutes into the second half.

Perhaps we should've gone back to our normal Positive mentality but we wanted to win the game and felt we could.

But we couldn't score a fourth goal and, against the run of play late on, Strømsgodset hit us on the break and won it.

Going into five added-on minutes we threw everything forward...

04_Stromsgodset_12_91mins.png.88d716e4fce3e9851767acbca663dc4a.png

... but we couldn't salvage a point.

04_Stromsgodset_09c.thumb.png.8d6a5061f53dec11c01063b8e177f668.png

It's disappointing to lose to Strømsgodset the way we did but the players can be proud of that long unbeaten run.

We can't be proud of our defending today though. It was nowhere near good enough.

04_Stromsgodset_09d.thumb.png.432ebdebc66ac872d8cc020445f4da56.png

It was a great chance that would've given us the point... but Henrique Araújo put his shot a yard wide. I'm not blaming him though, he scored two goals and overall performed very well which is more than I can say for some of his teammates.

Won Eliteserien (after two lean seasons) and retained Cupen... and we're still in last season's Europa League (2034/35) although after losing the first leg to Tottenham Hotspur the Quarter Final may be as far as we go.

We're going to need our amazing de mørkeblå supporters behind us like never before tonight if we're to overturn the one-goal deficit from the first leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Hopefully our fans can roar us onto a famous victory but we know it won't b e easy, Tottenham showed in the first leg that they are a very good team indeed.

05_Tottenham_02b.thumb.png.8292992ab95bd4c197a06ba99af575eb.png

We just weren't ourselves against Strømsgodset and that's the most disappointing thing about it.

There were some good things to our game, we attacked very well and scored three very good goals and could've had more.

But, at the other end, we let in  four, which is not like us at all, including two completely avoidable goals in the opening six minutes.

We need to defend better today or Tottenham will blow us away.

05_Tottenham_03_ineligible.png.fea236508c5c82adee6031d6761d9df2.png

Recent signing Henrique Araújo is ineligible and Jan Rune Hansen wasn't registered for this stage as he was out with a hip injury.

Otherwise, we're close to having a full squad to select from again.

After conceding two goals in the opening six minutes last time out against Strømsgodset, Anders Hartveit Ryste's stunning third minute strike was the perfect start.

05_Tottenham_09c.thumb.png.d823bfa80ae0522236c667b461dab5ec.png

I'm relieved, yes, but not because of the officials... I'm relieved because we won it with 10-men.

To beat Tottenham Hotspur, to keep a clean-sheet, to score the winner in extra-time when we were a player short, I'm chuffed to bits I can't lie to you.

People ask me why I've stayed at Viking so long...

It's because of nights like these. Special nights like this.

Just under 17,000 Viking supporters, in a SR-Bank Arena crowd of 17,850, were magnificent tonight. They kept the players going through a very difficult extra-time and I had goosebumps the atmosphere was so special.

I love this group of players. They are an honest, hard working squad and when they get reward for their hard work and effort... I'm so proud of them tonight.

05_Tottenham_12_36mins.png.d98d2cd27d5eaf403722688dfcb4a759.png

We lost Edvin Austbø to injury in the 36th minute.

05_Tottenham_09b.thumb.png.cb67d0f6317ff3ef350ce4c412af0d0a.png

Yeah, Ola Johannes Kleppa Christensen saw red in the 84th minute but, and I know this sounds daft, but I think he was doing what he thought was best for the team.

Tottenham were a threat, but I thought we were controlling the game for the most part, doing to them what they did to us in the first leg, we were attacking, we had a corner, Tottenham cleared it and then they were away on the counter-attack, Ola Johannes Kleppa Christensen found himself chasing their attacker and I think he just wanted to stop him, although diving in two-footed from behind wasn't the right way to do it.

Did Ola Johannes's sending off make it more difficult for us?

Yes, of course it did.

Did Ola Johannes's red card stop Tottenham scoring a late winner?

We'll never know but... possibly... probably... maybe... yes.

That left us with a dilemma though. Do we shut-up-shop and hold out for penalties or do we gamble and try to win it?

05_Tottenham_12_84mins.png.5f9ef9713ef61959ac54f537b9681779.png

We adjusted, but we didn't go defensive. I'd rather lose trying to win the game, than shut-up-shop and possibly lose any way.

With their player advantage, Tottenham put us under a lot of pressure, but we still created chances ourselves.

We defended magnificently, Jasper Torkildsen pulled off save after save after save.

And then, with 114 minutes on the clock, a close range header from substitute Lasse Nordås doubled our lead on the night and put us ahead for the first time in the tie.

The noise inside the SR-Bank Arena was so loud we couldn't hear ourselves.

But we decided to shut-up-shop then...

05_Tottenham_12_114a_mins.png.3c75ebc5a8a90805ded71d99a4ab9e18.png

05_Tottenham_12_114b_mins.png.f291ee23370f8ee30893dbe010993c22.png

... and six, very long minutes later, the referee blew the final whistle and the noise went up another decibel or ten.

We're in the Europa League Semi Final. Wow!

In it to win it against Sparta Praha! Make sure you play your best XI against them both times. Even if you have to play reserves in the League matches.

Makes Sure you use recovery practice session liberally after the second Tie to be ready for Bodo/Glimt.

At least we've avoided Marseille who were much better than us in the League Path fixture and beat us 3-1.

I like Krystoof Krysiak a lot. He came through the Viking Academy and was here a long time.

Unfortunately, it didn't work out for him during his time at Viking as he was unable to break into our first team squad.

I made the decision to let him go in January and wish him all the best at Sogndal and for his future, apart from when he plays us of course.

But it was a long match, going to extra-time, and this match against Sogndal has come just three days later.

06_Sogndal_02e.thumb.png.8ba5252698da2a82e18d06c2208cce2d.png

Like us, Sogndal have won one and lost one in Eliteserien so far, opening up with a heavy 1-6 defeat at Rosenborg before beating Lillestrøm 2-0 at home.

Unlike us, Sogndal have had a week off and will be out to get a result against us.

We won't be under-estimating Sogndal at all but, I think, this game is an opportunity to rotate and see if our squad is as strong as we think it is.

It's a difficult one to take, to be honest with you. On Thursday we played brilliantly to knock Tottenham out of the Europa League and reach the Semi Finals. Those players were out on their feet so we made wholseale changes for this game which came three days later.

We pride ourselves on the SR-Bank Arena being a fortress and this wasn't good enough today, nowhere near good enough.

The players who started today had a great opportunity to impress and what happened... they looked nervous, they looked edgy, they couldn't keep the ball at all in the first 20 minutes, and then Per Joar Hægstad Johnsen clatters - that's the word the VikingTV commentator used and it's a good drescription - "clatters" into Sogndal's attacker inside the penalty area and it's a penalty. And then we're a goal down.

On 20 minutes, a tackle from Joakim Berg Nundal inside our penalty area and the referee awards Sogndal a second penalty.

06_Sogndal_12_20mins.png.f0dc7c4284022c0ec4707be7a183669a.png

Fortunately, after a VAR review, the penalty wasn't given.

But Sogndal had the lead and they defended for their lives to preserve it. We created chances, more chances than Sogndal to be honest, but we only tested their goalkeeper once all match and that isn't good enough.

At half-time we made a sub and changed to a more Attacking mentality and shape.

06_Sogndal_12_46mins.png.eb66a0c4a0fe3816953ea8a41f203516.png

We sent on some of the players we'd rested on 56 minutes.

06_Sogndal_12_56mins.png.40b1c704fc68cdf0bd8e7b77e6634baf.png

We were better in the second half, I won't say much improved because we weren't much improved but we were better.

But we didn't have our shooting boots on and got what we deserved.

I want to apologise to the Viking supporters because we've set our standards high and today we were well short.

Next up is a visit to the Initilty Arena for a very challenging match away to Vålerenga. We’ll give the players a couple of days off and go again.

During those two days, my Backroom staff and myself will sit down and assess things,

Is this squad as strong as we thinks it is?

Right now I have no idea what team and matchday squad I'm going to select for the Vålerenga match.

Vålerenga have been one of our main rivals for the Eliteserien title in recent seasons and that makes these games special.

07_Valerenga_02a_Daga.thumb.png.a42bb95657287d02e9b9a23bbf4283c9.png

It won't be easy against Vålerenga in their Initility Arena and I'm sure Mesay Dego will have his players fired up for this match.

07_Valerenga_02b.png.8e182b24564c0064a7fe83df654afc85.png

Mesay Dago took over from Ole Gunnar Solskjær ahead of last season and we drew one and lost one so we've yet to beat Vålerenga with Mesay in charge.

It would be great if we could get that win today.

Jan Erik Dang's probably a couple of weeks off a return to training but Øyvind Bekkevold is available again.

I can't fault any of my players today, they were magnificent, but if you're putting me on the spot then Jesper Robertsen was probably the pick of the bunch.

07_Valerenga_09b.thumb.png.11599b945ea10cff29043cfd2b04c561.png

It's been a funny 2035 season so far. We've done brilliantly to reach the Europa League Semi Final but we'd also lost two out of our opening three Eliteserien matches to Strømsgodset and Sogndal and we knew that a defeat here against Vålerenga would be three on the spin.

So to come to the Intility Arena, to outplay a very good Vålerenga team, who are always difficult opponents, and to allow them only one attempt on goal, which didn't even test Hans Jørgen Solberg in our goal, is an incredible performance.

Bill Freeman gave us a ninth minute lead.

Substitute Joakim Berg Nudal doubled our lead in the second half.

And Jesper Robertsen hit the post on 80 minutes.

I thought we were extremely good value for this victory over Vålerenga and thoroughly deserved the three points.

We're at home in the first leg against Sparta Praha and we really need to make the advantage of playing in front of our wonderful de mørkeblå supporters in the SR-Bank Arena tell to give us the best chance of making the Final over the two legs.

01_Praha_02b.thumb.png.1f57d03b7ff9c68d60d3b3a442746e2e.png

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. As much as we want to make the Europa League Final I imagine Sparta Praha want it just as badly.

Ola Johannes Kleppa Christensen misses out after being sent off against Tottenham in the Quarter Final second leg.

We're also without Jan Rune Hansen who wasn't registered because of his hip injury and Henrique Araújo who we signed after the registration deadline. I expect they'll both start our next Eliteserien match against Sandefjord on Sunday.

I think it would've been, yes, but in a very tight, closely contested match, neither Sparta Praha nor us could find a way to score.

So it'll all be decided in Prague, Czechia next Thursday.

But before then, we have an important Eliteserien match at home to Sandefjord on Sunday.

Sandefjord have one win, two draws and a defeat so far in Eliteserien which is a good, solid start.

After we played Sparta Praha on Thursday evening, Sandefjord will be more rested than us which will make them very difficult opponents.

I think we have to, yes.

We travel to Czechia for the Europa League Semi Final second leg against Sparta Praha on Thursday night and then have a very tough Eliteserien match away to Bodø/Glimt the following Sunday.

It's a tough schedule right now and we'll need to use the full squad.

Jesper Robertsen has been, and continues to be, a great servant to Viking Fotballklubb.

02_Sandefjord_09b.thumb.png.7f84baf6223af516437d952ef1e9f0b8.png

Sandefjord had only lost once in Eliteserien this season so I wouldn't say they were in poor form.

We do have a good record against Sandefjord, though, and I was pleased we were able to keep that record going today.

Goals from Kasper Jacobsen and Joakim Berg Nundal in the first half did the damage which allowed us to use our bench in the second half to keep players fresh, hopefully, for the Europa League Semi Final second leg in Czechia on Thursday night.

On 57 minutes Julian Gonstad nearly added a third but his shot hit the post.

Sandefjord did put us under some pressure in the last quarter of an hour but we defended well and saw out the game reasonably comfirtably.

We're confident, but we know it won't be easy. The first leg was very competitive, with little between us and Sparta Praha.

With the second leg in Czechia, Sparta Praha will be confident in their own Stadion Letná, in front of their own fans, but we believe we can go there and get s positive result.

It's an incredible feeling to be in the UEFA Europa League Final as it didn't look too promising when Sparta Praha took the lead after only four minutes.

But the players responded magnificently. Two minutes later, Jeper Robertsen runs into the penalty area, gets tripped, and Anders Hartveit Ryste equalises from the spot.

After that, we grew in confidence and, I thought, controlled the match.

Edvin Austbø made it 2-1, Anders Hartveit Ryste made it 3-1 by the break.

Henrik Skogvold added a fourth early in the second half and we had the luxury of substituting players with Bodø/Glimt on Sunday in mind.

03_Praha_09b.thumb.png.adf9e1122295c11a0ae32f9788da5944.png

There were 944 Viking supporters in a crowd of 18,887 inside the Stadion Letná and boy did they make themselves heard.

Sporting Clube de Portugal will be a very difficult opponent but we haven't gone all the way to the UEFA Europa League Final simply to make up the numbers.

If anything, Bodø/Glimt and Thomas Thomasberg will be more determined to beat us because of our successful record against them.

We have tired legs and Bodø/Glimt will be well rested.
