I did, yes, just before half time is always a good time to score and it meant we had the one goal lead going into the break that our display more than deserved.

Anders Hartveit Ryste scored from the spot, after Edvin Austbø had been tripped in the penalty area, and I think that was another blow for Odd because they know they could've avoided the foul.

Odd, to be fair, started the game brightly and Hans Jørgen Solberg had to make a fine, early save but that was the only shot Odd had on target until the 78th minute when Hans Jørgen made a superb one-on-one save.

On 29 minutes, Øyvind Bekkevold's header was cleared off the line by an Odd defender.

We made two changes at half time, replacing the two players on yellow cards.

Øyvind Bekkevold got the goal, his overall performance deserved in the 65th minute and I don't think the result was ever in doubt after that.

I'm stunnied by Mellberg's criticism there. Never read the like before

We made Olof Mellberg eat his words here though @phnompenhandy with two goals, both scored by Norwegians.

Hægstad Johnsen Set for Bodø/Glimt Loan

I get a bit exasperated with Per Joar Hægstad Johnsen at times. I really like him as a player but he gets upset very easily which is a shame because I'd planned on giving him more playing time this season as I'm looking to rotate the squad more to keep on top of match sharpness.

After talking to him and agreeing to find him a loan, I ummed and aaaaghed over Bodø/Glimt's loan offer, because they essentially wanted him for free, but I accepted it the end.

Having thought about it though, and whilst this decision may send Per Joar Hægstad Johnsen over the edge, I've decided to reject Bodø/Glimt's loan offer.

If Bodø/Glimt want him, they need to contribute something financially during his time there.

Yes, Lillestrøm beat us last time out at the Åråsen Stadion in November last year.

05_Lillestrom_02b_previous.png.1e7dedbeeaf1945dead0b3669269a96b.png

But we did win earlier in the season at our SR-Bank Arena and, generally, have a good record against Lillestrøm during my time at Viking.

05_Lillestrom_02c.thumb.png.f84b66592bce94c87e2a4aadc419dec8.png

Yes, these words may well come back to haunt me but, yes, us. I think we will win Eliteserien.

05_Lillestrom_02d.thumb.png.656aa07acf48c308790367ede8c6e974.png

We've lifted the Eliteserien trophy in the previous two seasons and have won Eliteserien five times in the last seven seasons.

Quite simply, we know what it takes to win Eliteserien and are confident we will be in the title race again this season.

Eliteserien_2028-2035.png.7cd069a76acc81a7cc6cc4ad9f17542e.png

We're slowly getting closer to a clean bill of health and, hopefully, after the international break we will have everybody available for selection.

There's early baths and then there's early baths - we were down to 10 men after just three minutes and somehow, unbelievably, Eirik Bakk picked up two yellow cards in that time.

We didn't even have time to react to his first yellow, before Eirik had got a second one and he was off.

05_Lillestrom_09b.thumb.png.f8a2271e89a00a5d8ab2ad24a1404fae.png

I am so proud, to come to the and play for 87 plus minutes in the Åråsen Stadion, against Lillestrøm and win. That really is something to be proud of.

We obviously had to regroup after the sending off and make changes.

05_Lillestrom_12b_6mins.png.3197014df2f8357b9a2b529ce6b1d13e.png

The biggest compliment I can give the players is that they continued to dominate the game with 10 men and it was a fitting reward when Anders Hartveit Ryste scored after 15 minutes.

Seven minutes later, we thought Anders Hartveit Ryste had scored a second but it was ruled out for offside.

05_Lillestrom_09d.thumb.png.ad122d1bb419e9def0e36e5a8f24c700.png

Edvin Austbø got stepped on and had a really painful toe so we had to replace him after 31 minutes. I've not spoken to the medical team yet so I don't know how bad his injury is.

And we took Brede Norbye off as well as he'd picked up a yellow card and we couldn't risk another sending off.

05_Lillestrom_12c_30mins.png.73855c17828524c7a03027ba85f4fab3.png

From that point on, it really was backs against the wall stuff. I could've done with Ola Johannes Kleppa Christensen on the bench as a natural replacement for Edvin, but we were resting Ola Johannes as he's only just back in training after a pulled groin.

Lillestrøm hit the bar on 36 minutes and then put the rebound into the side netting.

At half time we just tried to give the players confidence because we knew the second half would be a slog and we'd have to dig in.

On 69 minutes, after Lillestrøm had looked dangerous, we made changes designed to see the game out.

05_Lillestrom_12d_69mins.png.a8c70ff4254d47b220f027560f0f25c3.png

05_Lillestrom_12e_69mins.png.c422adb7cda46777453d6dc6fc11ddb0.png

And on 84 minutes we looked to manage the remaining time as best we could.

05_Lillestrom_12f_84mins.png.603e3488d8e1836f48955e25b125c6d4.png

The final whistle, when it came, was a huge relief as I don't want to go through another 90 plus five minutes like that ever again.

The players are out on their feet, they're gassed out, but they worked incredibly hard for the Viking cause today and I'm delighted for them that they were able to hold out for the victory.

05_Lillestrom_09c.thumb.png.87b5d3d94b81bda1b6465886a8e4ce31.png

Anders Hartveit Ryste is a fantastic footballer and he's now scored four goals in three Eliteserien matches so far this season.

I think Vetle Sandvik is getting a bit ahead of himself here to be honest. Vertle has a lot of potential, but he won't realise it unless he concentrates on the important things and works hard.

We're trying to get him a loan move and we have no takers which I think says it all.

I have told Vetle that I'll let him go if we receive a bid of £1M but I'm not actively looking to sell him... not yet, but I will if his attitude becomes an issue.

Benjamin Fabian Vold, currently on loan with Sandefjord, was the only Viking player to start for Norway as he won his first senior cap against Cyprus.

Aleksander Liland (33rd cap) came on as a substitute for Aleksander Hammer Kjelsen in first half added-on time.

Hans Jørgen Solberg (8 caps), Jasper Torkildsen (15 caps), Sindre Grønvold (7 caps), Tor Helge Vatten (2 caps), Ove Benjamin Modell (2 caps), Tinius Sundell (15 caps) and Anders Hartveit Ryste (4 caps) were all unused substitutes.

It's been a strange start to Eliteserien. Five teams, including us, have won all three of their matches.

Four teams, including Hønefoss, have lost all three.

I'm sure Hønefoss and their manager Ole Jørgen Halvorsen will be wanting to get their first points on the board today.

01_Honefoss_02c.thumb.png.1e6f7d9ddbcc24defb995d826d5c4c54.png

Chairperson Thomas Ekren has been very supportive since he was elected last September and we get on very well.

01_Honefoss_02b.thumb.png.1114eb389b2ba5ebbeb4a1b0a37e8f04.png

It's very frustrating to lose Anders Hartveit Ryste, and his four goals in three Eliteserien matches, for months. If it was a World Cup Qualifier that would've been something, but it was a friendly.

We also lost Edvin Austbø in our last match against Lillestrøm so we're having to rush a couple of players back quicker than we'd have liked.

Henrique Araújo starts against Hønefoss but I doubt he'll last the full match.

Jan Rune Hansen will also start out of postion on the right wing.

We'll also be without suspended Eirik Bakk. I still can't believe he picked up two yellow cards in the opening three minutes against Lillestrøm.

Yeah, Bill Freeman gave us the lead on 24 minutes after Benjamin Thoresen Faraas was denied a brilliant, individual goal when his shot hit the post after 13 minutes.

Jan Rune Hansen doubled our lead after 63 minutes and, for me, Hønefoss huffed and puffed a bit without seriously threatening our goal.

01_Honefoss_09b.thumb.png.3a13ea975574861fdf05404e71569209.png

We've only conceded one goal in four Eliteserien matches and, for me, Hans Jørgen Solberg and his defence have been outstanding although, we defend as a team and we attack as a team.

I'm delighted with this result as we were forced to put out a cobbled-together team today due to injuries and suspensions.

We started with centre-back Jan Rune Hansen on the right wing and finished with Ove Benjamin Modell, another centre-back, playing up front.

Joakim Berg Nundal was a great servant for Viking during his four seasons here. He's a good player and an amazing person.

I'll speak to Joakim at some point and wish him all the very best... except when he plays against us of course.

We won't see Anders Hartveit Ryste back in a Viking shirt for a good while yet.

Fortunately, we have a few walking wounded on the way back.

02_Sandnes_Ulf_09a.thumb.png.45025609a6c90193cc41602a9fef2eeb.png

The first half was very even I thought, with both teams creating chances.

Benjamin Thoresen Faraas came closest for us when hit the post from distance after 15 minutes.

On 32 minutes, a Sandnes Ulf shot deflected up onto our bar.

A minute later, Sandnes Ulf took the lead with a fierce shot from just outside our penalty area.

We created a few good chances to equalise but our former goalkeeper, Daniel Gjerde Sætren, made some good saves to keep us out.

And then, as if written in the stars, another of our former players, Joakim Berg Nundal, headed in a 43rd minute corner at the near post.

A two-goal deficit at the break was going to be tough to claw back but, fortunately, Bill Freeman pulled one back three minutes into added-on time after great work by Edvin Austbø.

I thought we were better after the break but we couldn't find a way past Daniel Gjerde Sætren.

After 57 minutes we changed to an Attacking mentality.

On 65 minutes we equalised when Benjamin Thoresen Faraas cut in from the left, hit a powerful shot that took a wicked deflection that wrong-footed Daniel Gjerde Sætren.

After that, both teams had chances to win the match so a draw was probably a fair result.

02_Sandnes_Ulf_09b.thumb.png.eb17b23cf5f28a619e6efe0afc17b2f4.png

Not if we keep giving teams a two-goal lead it won't.

But the squad is a bit unbalanced at the moment due to injuries to our attacking players so the sooner we can get some players out of the medical room and onto the pitch the better.

It's Viking's 11 players plus subs against Skeid's 11 players plus subs.

Previous matches don't really count for anything today.

03_Skeid_02b.thumb.png.510369e55d51f632a46302793257e42d.png

We have a very good record against Skeid and, hopefully, we can win again today.

03_Skeid_02c.thumb.png.ca7bb1b68fbfe87f539984669c150de4.png

It's incredible really, Odd put seven past Skeid on the opening day but Skeid drew their next game against Lillestrøm and then won three on the spin against Hønefoss, Sandnes Ulf and Molde.

03_Skeid_02d.thumb.png.e6122e27f8495d19f4e9a3dcb164aa84.png

Yes, Skeid's victory over Molde was very impressive and we will have to be at our best today if we want to get a positive result.

I think the referee was consistent for both teams today.

Whether he was consistently good, bad or indifferent I'll leave to others.

03_Skeid_09b.thumb.png.a8793cc94c1d183807b99e6041c3764b.png

I thought we were very good today.

Both of our ball-winning midfielders picked up a yellow card in the opening 10 minutes.

We took the lead on 12 minutes, Bill Freeman hit the post with a direct free-kick but Ove Benjamin Modell reacted quickest to hit the rebound across the goalkeeper and into the corner of the net.

Edvin Austbø doubled our lead after 25 minutes.

Bill Freeman made it three on 43 minutes with a curling free-kick that hit the inside of the near post, flew up against the underside of the bar, and bounced down over the line.

But we lost concentration in added-on time and Skeid pulled one back with a near post header at a corner.

We had three players on yellow cards by half-time so we substituted them during the break.

03_Skeid_12_46mins.png.152fe4e5677c8b7cd500068e35e61a87.png

The second half was a calmer, more contained match, with very few chances.

Benjamin Thoresen Faraas hit the bar from long-range on 88 minutes.

03_Skeid_09c.thumb.png.f69fdd9a2d8d82646651442a9b585c61.png

We win as a team and we lose as a team.

Today, everybody played their part, put in a real shift but, yes, Bill Freeman was superb.

Henrique Araújo has had knee and ankle injuries to contend with in recent weeks so to see him back to his best, scoring a quality hat-trick, is a great feeling.

04_Molde_09b.thumb.png.e0a62af53ea8a86d3e7218564f190b5e.png

Benjamin Thoresen Faraas is starting to show the form that made us want to bring him to Viking.

Benjamin gave us the lead today with a brilliant far post header from Costel Tilincă's cross.

04_Molde_09c.thumb.png.b0426797c22268dee0423f9feb3388fe.png

I can't stop grinning at how we played today. Every single player and subs who came on were superb.

Benjamin Thoresen Faraas started us off, Bill Freeman made it two, and Henrique Araújo added a third before the break.

In the second half, Henrique Araújo scored two more for his hat-trick.

Molde are a very good team so to put five past them without reply is testament to the quality of this Viking squad.

Henrique Araújo has had a couple of injuries to get through but his form currently is as good as it's been during his time here. With Anders Hartveit Ryste out injured, I'd be selecting Henrique if I was Kjetil Knutsen. Mind you, I'm biased, I'd pick both Henrique and Anders if they were both fit.

01_Sandefjord_02a.thumb.png.d2811c2f30d415949bc7b770314ccb59.png

It is. Most definitely. We'd love to produce the scintillating performance against Molde every match but that isn't how football works.

01_Sandefjord_02c.png.46a1c4cb29a1a7fc3bb80da66130ffeb.png

We've never lost against Sandefjord during my time at Viking and, hopefully, that sequence continues today when we visit the Jotun Arena.

After losing their opening four Eliteserien matches, Sandefjord are unbeaten in their last three, a draw followed by two wins, so we know it won't be easy.

01_Sandefjord_02b.thumb.png.9af77d94b678a380a32d8e52dbaebff4.png

We're getting used to being in a title race with Vålerenga season after season so, yes, I fully expect Vålerenga to be there or thereabouts after 30 matches.

The way Eliteserien is shaping up so far, if we can finish above Vålerenga then the odds are we'll retain our Eliteserien title.

Benjamin Fabian Vold won his first senior Norway cap in the last international break and I was thrilled for him. We did consider recalling him but, we decided, Benjamin would get more playing time this season if we left him at Sandefjord than bringing him home. We will be keeping a very close eye on how he does this season and, hopefully, Benjamin can be part of our plans next season.

Yes, of course. Top of Eliteserien is where we want to be at the end of the season so to go top after eight matches shows we're heading in the right direction.

But now the hard work really starts. Sometimes it's easier to be the hunter than the hunted; we need to make sure we stay top.

We've had quite a few injury problems this season so being top right now feels very good.

01_Sandefjord_09b.thumb.png.92089bb84198455e335194b3f75175b1.png

Aleksander Liland is in his sixth season here after joining us from Molde, he has 34 caps for Norway with lots more to come, hopefully, and I'm delighted with him.

01_Sandefjord_09c.thumb.png.7b3a6219b23c9adee020f05a63e69288.png

It was a stunning third minute goal by  Benjamin Thoresen Faraas and then he scored another, arguably even better, just three minutes later.

And two minutes after that, Bill Freeman made it 3-0.

We were unplayable in that opening 10 minutes but, credit to Sandefjord, they settled down, got back into the game, and pulled one back on 35 minutes.

Bill Freeman saw his 42nd minute shot blocked on the line but, three minutes later, Bill scored his second and our fourth.

We played equally well in the second half but Abdullah Sheikhah made some good saves in Sandefjord's goal to deny us, including a sensational save late on that denied Morten Synnes his first ever senior goal for Viking.

Sandefjord made it 4-2 late-on after Aleksander Liland conceded a penalty with a mistimed tackle in our six-yard box.

It's a shame to see my former club, Hødd, in the relegation places but there's plenty of football still to be played and, hopefully, Hødd will get themselves clear of danger like they did last season, in their first season back in Eliteserien, when they finished 10th.

02_Hodd_02b.thumb.png.908d783ffe7fab35943af8dfbad6b7b0.png

That would be nice and to do it in front of our own fans in the SR-Bank Arena as well.

We did the double over Hødd last season and we're confident of winning again today.

I wouldn't call it Stuniverse-ball myself, I didn't invent it, but yes this style of play suits our players and we seem to be successful playing it.

Take today, six goals, a penalty well saved by Marius Beite, and we could, maybe should have had more.

02_Hodd_09b.thumb.png.56c2645f88534112966383362f6d3a57.png

There's no one thing, this tactical approach kind of evolved over the time I've been here, but it seems to be working and we're scoring goals and conceding very few.

Six goals today, six different goal scorers: Edvin AustbøHenrique Araújo, Bill FreemanBenjamin Thoresen Faraas, Daniel Daga and a Sindre Grønvold shot that hit the bar, bounced down, hit their goalkeeper Marius Beite on the back and bounced back over the line.

And Henrique Araújo had a penalty well saved by Marius Beite.

But, to be fair, Hødd scored the best goal of the game when they were already six-down, a spectacular overhead kick from Sigge Jansson that flew past Hans Jørgen Solberg in our goal.

02_Hodd_09c.thumb.png.cf882fd1e4577347e44be31983e1bbe1.png

Daniel Daga is a very good player. We thought he was going to Al-Qadsiah in the last transfer window. We accepted an £8M bid for Daniel, as we'd promised him he could go if we received an offer for that amount but, in the end, Daniel couldn't agree personal terms with Al-Qadsiah and he stayed here.

Preview - Rosenborg (away)

Rosenborg are improving, there's no doubt about that.

They lost their opening three matches, then drew, but have then gone on to win four of their last five, losing the other.

03_Rosenborg_02p_previous.png.600c6d22b9f26507378c07a5770fb014.png

Our results against Rosenborg were mixed last season.

We went to Lerkendal and won in Eliteserien by the only goal of the game. Three days later we returned to Lerkendal in Cupen, were cruising 2-0 at half-time, then Edvin Austbø got a straight red, Rosenborg equalised and went on to win the penalty shootout.

Later in the season, back at our SR-Bank Arena, neither team scored in a nil-nil draw.

03_Rosenborg_02f.thumb.png.580505fad0d9bb8dd13eb5bca4b18938.png

Bill Freeman is a quality player, but we have other quality players as well.

03_Rosenborg_02b.thumb.png.e9a04d2015ea917179173f4b4b4f68db.png

We won't be seeing Anders Hartveit Ryste back in a Viking shirt until after the UEFA European Championships in June which is a real shame as he was injured on international duty so Anders had a good chance of being called up by Kjetil Knutsen for the Norway squad.

Roberto Heitinga (7.5) had a great game. We didn't really have our shooting boots on, so he didn't have many shots to save, but he commanded his penalty area very well and caught nearly every cross we sent in.

03_Rosenborg_09b.thumb.png.bc6c4f3fbe0838e84075e38e89397bcb.png

It was a game of very few chances and that suited Rosenborg who worked very hard to stifle us, frustrate us, and stop us playing our game.

After just 14 minutes, Costel Tilincă headed a free-kick clear to the edge of the penalty area, but we didn't do enough to defend the second ball and Rosenborg worked the ball down the right channel, crossed low into our six-yard box and Seedy Jatta tapped the ball in.

Once Rosenborg had their noses in front, they were more interested in getting everybody back and defending than they were about trying to score a second goal.

A minute later, Henrique Araújo headed a corner narrowly over the bar. I said earlier that we didn't have our shooting boots on... but we weren't woeful. I lost count of how many efforts were only fractions too high as they rustled the top of the net after narrowly missing the bar.

Aleksander Liland picked up a first half yellow card and we replaced him during the break.

03_Rosenborg_12_46mins.png.a4db13ee110b0d5beaa6914cbf7407ed.png

On 62 minutes we went more Attacking.

03_Rosenborg_12_62mins.png.4601355b6405b1718752f09f2c87dc55.png

On 67 minutes, Morten Synnes crossed from the right but he overhit it, Rosenborg passed the ball back to their goalkeeper, Roberto Heitinga cleared the ball first time but he was standing well back and our players were adamant the ball had crossed the line. No goal given.

Seven minutes later, Roberto Heitinga made a brilliant save at full stretch to keep out Morten Synnes's powerful shot.

We couldn't break Rosenborg down and we changed our shape on 80 minutes to try and force the issue.

03_Rosenborg_12_80mins.png.1caa0675754af21385ceb490ed3bb5c7.png

But that back-fired as Rosenborg had the better of the next 10 minutes.

On 88 minutes, Isak Vural's shot hit our bar and post but somehow stayed out.

Going into added-on time we went more direct.

03_Rosenborg_12_90mins.png.5572bac5e837b0ae2612f2ddb9c7e5e0.png

But we couldn't get the equaliser.

I didn't like the way Rosenborg played, it's not for me, but fair play to Rasmus Bertelsen and his team, they got an early lead, defended it for the rest of the match, rode their luck a bit, but they worked very hard and got the win.

03_Rosenborg_10.png.c8313b5d48c4f3699cce4e148bdcd993.png

I let Egil Ulfstein do his bad-cop act again.

03_Rosenborg_09c.thumb.png.bedd2f2fbcfd8aafacf21b690cffd8cb.png

It is what it is. We regroup and go again.

03_Rosenborg_09d.thumb.png.079b33a97dda0a35205b44ceb145406c.png

Daniel Daga wants to leave and I needed places on the bench for Jens Hjertø-Dahl and Brede Norbye.

Daniel is a very good player, he's very much in my plans should he change his mind and want to stay, after all he had a chance to leave and join Al-Qadsiah in the last window but he turned down their contract offer. For the time being, I have to look after the players who want to play for Viking.

Aleksander Liland has been brilliant ever since he arrived at Viking and is a true inspiration. We signed him from Molde after he'd graduated from the Tromsø Academy.

I like to think we spotted something in Aleksander that Molde and Tromsø missed and I'm delighted that he's gone on to win 34 caps thus far and will be going to Scotland and Wales as part of the Norway European Championship squad.

Today, Aleksander Liland had a great game and gave us a ninth minute lead with a shot from the penalty area 'D' that curled into the top corner.

Ola Johannes Kleppa Christensen made it two on 14 minutes with a goal that was almost identical to Aleksander's, hit from the same area of the pitch, to the same side of the goal, but this one flew into the bottom corner, rather than the top. This was Ola Johannes' first game back after an ankle injury and I was thrilled for him.

No, you're never really comfortable but, for the most part, I thought we defended well.

Lillestrøm nearly pulled one back on 24 minutes but Andrei Şomfălean brilliantly blocked a header on the line.

Jasper Torkildsen (7.9) also made three great saves in the first half to keep Lillestrøm out.

On 76 minutes, 2-0 up, I made three substitutions to bring on youngsters Morten SynnesSven Arne Austevik and Mikkel Fjellandsbø.

I'd been pondering those substitutions for 10 minutes because, whilst I have faith in all three of them, I hoped their inexperience didn't cost us.

Sadly, on 82 minutes, Morten Synnes dived into a rash, and totally unnecessary challenge, right down by Lillestrøm's corner flag, but he got a lot more of their player than he did the ball and received a straight red card.

We adjusted and, fortunately, were able to see the game out.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: it's not about the managers, it's about the players.

That's an amazing record but records like that don't go on forever. It's up to the players to work hard and make sure we continue that run today.

We did the double over Bodø/Glimt quite comfortably last season (4-0 at home and 5-1 in Aspmyra) and we're confident of keeping that record going.

Bodø/Glimt are struggling a bit by their standards but their form is improving.

Spoiler

Oscar Bobb was with us 2028 through 2035 and was a fantastic player for us and an even better person to have around the place. I think we saw him at his best here but, no doubt about it, Oscar remains a quality player.

Thomas Thomasberg has mainly used Oscar Bobb off the bench this season so it'll be interesting to see whether he starts Oscar or not today.

Benjamin Thoresen Faraas is back in training and will be on the bench today but if we can get away with resting him, we probably will.

Viking's June Schedule

UEC_Viking_schedule_01.png.46ee41901889923a171aa9a090fbf53a.png

Re-arranging the Sogndal match for the 11th of June doesn't really help us much as both Norway and Turkiye have friendlies on the 4th so, even though the European Championships don't start until two days after the Sogndal match, our players will already be away on international duty.
