warlock
Looks like the tactical switch is starting to produce - yes there's a lot of draws but that's better than losing. As for the squad size, I'm not sure I understand the issue. You have a lot of amateurs on non-contracts. Just get rid. Be brutal

phnompenhandy
Good stuff! You're falling into some of the same traps I did. I drew far too many games last season - that's what cost me the title. Still, if your target is to avoid relegation, draws, as warlock says, are better than losses. And a big squad with not enough coaches - yup, my coach workloads were way too heavy, suppressing the quality of training in individual categories. Keeping the squad size to manageable limits by "culling" is absolutely necessary. I target ones who constantly moan about the training, players too old for the U18/19/21s squad but won't be first team regulars, and players for whom I have too many in a given position (e.g. 4th choice left back).

Yes, @phnompenhandy... too many draws indeed. Looking at the league table, we are the joint highest goal scorers with 34 goals from 15 matches, equal with Froya, but we have the second highest number of goals conceded, 33, behind only Froya who have let in 35. I'm thinking of maybe going "Balanced" mentality instead of the "Positive" 4-2-4 for home matches and "Positive" 5-2-3 for away matches. Hopefully, that plus better signings will help turn some of those draws into wins. The other issue I have is the discrepancy between scouting reports and coach reports. I'm finding, on average, my scouts are rating a player a half or a full star better than my coaching team does when the player joins us at the Alvoen Stadium. On odd occasions, the difference has been as much as 1.5 stars. Coaching Staff Spoiler Recruitment Staff Spoiler

I just watched a video analysing whether there is a 'home bias' in FM24. Apparently there is, but it's less than1% ! My attitude is not to change depending on home-away, but whether we are odds on to win or lose. I have been starting with Balanced more often than Positive though.
Stuniverse
The Big July Shutdown Thanks to @I have nothing to say for this information, we appear to have entered the Big July Shutdown in Norway which, I'm assuming, explains the gap in our fixtures. I'm thinking of giving the players some time off (even though we only train Tuesdays and Thursdays) and, then, arranging a Friendly match or two before we play Madla away on Sunday 20th August. Probably a good idea. I should have done that in my first season, but due to inexperience, played too many friendlies and knackered the lads. Just get them fit at the end of the break - good thinking.

I kind of did the same as you... without the friendlies. I'm on Thursday 3rd August in-game so have kept the players training Tuesday and Thursday through the first two weeks of the break. So, as I do want to play a friendly or two, the best I can do is give them a week off. Edited November 27, 2023 by Stuniverse

To my mind, regular first team competitive action is the best, but after that - what? If I have them in the Under 18s and gain experience by playing friendlies, is that good? What if they keep losing (which they do)? Or should I just train them - even with utterly rubbish facilities and coaching standards? Will they be okay staying totally match unfit and just do training drills? I haven't worked any of this ut yet.

I haven't worked any of this ut yet. Well, for what it's worth @phnompenhandy, I'm not sure we'll get much improvement from coaching U18s one or two times a week, with rubbish facilities, whereas playing a first team match, whether competitive or friendly, is still a first team match. I think if we were a full-time club, training every day, the thing about U18s getting more development from coaching than playing is probably true. I've just spoken to my Assistant Manager for his views on our U19s. Tor Martin thinks we have two Elite Talents and one Top Talent, but all three are way off first team level at the moment. And that's about it... Edited November 27, 2023 by Stuniverse
Stuniverse
Sunday 6th August 2023 Loddefjord (Tier 4) v Lyngbo (Tier 5) Friendly -- We gave the first team players seven days off and then arranged three friendly matches. Two for when the holidaying players have returned, but one for while the players were away. So who's going to play? Well, I asked my Assistant Manager Tor Martin Hegrenes to recommend free agents in all positions. Tor Martin came up with three names in every position we're likely to need and we offered them all a four-week trial. Some rejected us, but we ended up bringing 37 players in for a week's training camp here at the Alvoen Stadium. Of those trialists, we said thanks, but no thanks to 10 of them, leaving us with a squad of 27 players for today's friendly against Lyngbo. -- We made nine changes at half-time. --
Stuniverse
Sunday 13th August 2023 Voss (Tier 5) v Loddefjord (Tier 4) Friendly -- We've started offering contracts to the best of the trialists and (in typical FM style) as soon as we did then lots of other football clubs started offering them contracts as well. With the first team squad now back at the Alvoen after their time off, today's friendly away at Voss will be a combination of our players and trialists with the aim being to give 11 players 45 minutes first half and a different 11 players 45 minutes after the break. -- We made 11 changes during the break and changed the system from 5-2-3 to 4-2-4. -- Voss is a beautiful place to visit so we made a weekend of it and gave the players time for some bonding.

Thanks, @phnompenhandy we will see when the league campaign resumes. It was meant to be a way for the trialists to feel part of the group. It's worked for some as they've signed on the dotted line but (spoiler alert for the next Episode)... Spoiler ... some of them have signed for other football clubs. We're still waiting decisions from a fair number of trialists but, so far, more have signed elsewhere than for Loddefjord. 5 minutes ago, phnompenhandy said: I've been adding Norwegian landscapes to my Scottish stack as a screensaver on my PC lately.
