After Oliver Petersen's brilliant display against us for Bodø/Glimt towards the end of the season, we sounded Oliver and his agent out about a return to Viking as our back-up goalkeeper as we knew Sander Lønning would be leaving.

We're delighted to have got this deal done.

Molde Enquire About Kleppa Christensen

--

Spoiler

Ola Johannes Kleppa Christensen is a good player, and I have a lot of time for him, but I haven't been able to give him much playing time and loaned him out to Molde last season.

Molde_enquiry_Kleppa-Christensen_03.thumb.png.88741ae202a8843a3206da2a9827ca1d.png

But Ola Johannes Kleppa Christensen is a graduate from the Viking Academy and counts as a Homegrown Club [HGC] player so I don't really want to lose him.

Molde_enquiry_Kleppa-Christensen_02.png.bda43b7807e5c9cc7675887c70f44bf3.png

That said, his valuation is £1.4M-£2.2M... but if Molde are prepared to pay double what he's worth I may be tempted...

Molde_enquiry_Kleppa-Christensen_04.png.6851c771ac0a31c7c59a1d85b037889d.png

Oh well...

Molde_enquiry_Kleppa-Christensen_05.png.8107b5ff05541fc2d7765b80bc17bdb5.png

Looks like Ola Johannes Kleppa Christensen is staying at Viking... at least for now.

I think it's ridiculous that we have to register an Eliteserien 25-player squad almost three months before the campaign kicks-off.

19 minutes ago, Hootieleece said:

Are you able to make most of Set Piece's? or do you ignore it?

We will have to wait and see, @Hootieleece as it looks like the Board have recently added that one and are reserving judgement.

But, to be honest, I'm very happy with it as we've definitely had Make the most of set pieces in previous Club Vision's and I don't recall the Board stressing about it.

Basically, I play Play For Set Pieces in the tactic, and...

We've guaranteed ourselves a UEFA Europa League Playoff spot but, with two matches left in the League Path, we're looking to claim a place in the Knockout Round of 16 without the need for Playoffs.

01_Wien_02d.thumb.png.f2841a9112733782eccf1d348c6c29a0.png

It gives us a lot of confidence and that's exactly why we signed Oliver Petersen.

01_Wien_02i.thumb.png.fc639e3ff147b8eb4d59c0dfa005ad38.png

Øyvind Bekkevold is close to a return but we won't risk him.

Sadly, we have a long injury list and a few fitness issues.

It was a really tough game against Austria Wien and, to be honest, it could've gone either way.

We were delighted when Anders Hartveit Ryste gave us the lead with 19 minutes to go.

It was then an incredibly tense last 19 + 5 minutes, end to end with chances at both ends, but we got the win.

01_Wien_09b.thumb.png.fa7aec2a9e176c59b7629243c8a2de72.png

I thought we started the game brightly so it was disappointing to fall behind midway through the first half.

But Edvin Austbø's equaliser, two minutes into added-on time, gave us a massive confidence boost going into the second half.

We're getting closer to a clean bill of health, and Tinius Sundell should be ok to play, but we still have a fair few players out injured or lacking fitness.

We don't want to risk anybody at this early stage of our 2035 pre-season but this is a very important game for us because a win over sc Heerenveen will guarantee we avoid the Playoffs and go straight into the 2034/35 UEFA Europa League Knockout Round of 16.

We're thrilled to have qualified for the UEFA Europa League Knockout Round of 16.

At the end of a long, hard domestic season, to win five, draw two and lose only one of our League Path matches is a tremendous achievement. The players deserve to enjoy this moment as they've worked so hard for it.

01_Heerenveen_09b.thumb.png.13fd088c6989533047349de52696dfe9.png

It was a crazy game. I'm tempted to blame the snow but it was the same for both teams and Heerenveen dealt with the conditions better than us in the early stages.

Heerenveen took a third minute lead when Jasper Torkildsen didn't get enough distance on his punch and they doubled their lead after six minutes.

Fortunately we got ourselves settled and goals from Edvin Austbø and Henrik Skogvold had us level by the break.

01_Heerenveen_09c.thumb.png.7ee5cd92fe9296aad75acfbce9b7c89a.png

Yeah, Kasper Jakobsen and Ola Johannes Kleppa Christensen had a big influence on the game when they came on as substitutes.

I thought we were the better team in the second half so it was frustrating to fall behind again on 76 minutes.

We made four substitutions, maybe I should've made them earlier as we had some tired legs, and we changed to a more Attacking shape and mentality.

01_Heerenveen_12_76mins.png.4d863c739a615d5db78dfdd2d0c64582.png

And, our efforts were rewarded when Kasper Jakobsen scored our equaliser.

Planning For The Future

--

01_IA_00.png.5639c2a552f71004d3b94deb3a6eb38e.png

With our first pre-season friendly against Icelandic team Íþróttabandalag Akraness in eight days, I'm seriously thinking about the make-up, or potential make-up of my Viking squad for the coming season.

first-team-squad.png.472d4e94bc1f635f9a8845055a53b6ed.png

I have 21 players who I definitely see as part of the squad and they have all played in UEFA Europa League matches during this transition phase of 2034/35 from last season to the new season.

I doubt, that any of these players will feature against Íþróttabandalag Akraness.

That leaves me with 14 players who are currently in the first team squad but I have questions about or, at least, I'm unsure of what role they will play for Viking this season... assuming they remain at Viking this season.

first-team-squad_not-big-names-yet.png.4c6cbdc3daac9a25180f1071cdcd7013.png

I've already pencilled them onto the team sheet for the Íþróttabandalag Akraness friendly.

--

In GOAL, first-up is 33 year old Oliver Petersen. Oliver is in his second spell at the club and we brought him back in January to be our back-up goalkeeper.

Spoiler

21_Petersen.thumb.png.b214b8e4ee8c9f7c4a527b7958e4772c.png

There's also 20 year-old Roger Vestgøte who is Homegrown at club (HGC) and one of our two young prospects with the gloves, although I'm not sure if he will be good enough or not.

He spent 2033 on loan in Tier 3, where he did ok, and with Oliver here as our back-up (#3) I think Roger needs to go out on loan again this season.

Spoiler

51_Vestgote.thumb.png.2271d8e4e95d9533376a8f2732c1af22.png

Our other young goalkeeper is 18 year-old Thomas Otterlei, another HGC youngster who is currently on loan in Tier 4 having spent 2034 on loan in Tier 3.

At right-back, I'm unsure about 22 year-old Tor Helge Vatten. He spent last season on loan with Sandefjord in Eliteserien and probably deserves this season to show me what he can do. It will be a big pre-season for him.

At left-back, I have high hopes for Øyvind Bekkevold.

Spoiler

33_Bekkevold.thumb.png.06bc0d3bdbdc13b1ce956fd17bec0804.png

In central defence, I really like Per Joar Hægstad Johnsen and, in his second spell at Viking, I need to find a way to keep him happy and give him the playing time he wants.

He proved during his time at Vålerenga and his loan spells at Brann and Sandnes Ulf that he's more than good enough to play Eliteserien football.

And then there's Academy graduate Benjamin Vold. The 18 year-old had a successful loan with Hønefoss in OBOS-ligaen (Tier 2) last season and the question is whether to keep him around the squad this season or look to loan him out again.

In the attacking wide roles, there's...

Oscar Bobb, my very first signing as Viking manager. Oscar has been brilliant for us but he didn't feature much last season and ended the season out on loan at Bodø/Glimt. The question is do I give Oscar one more season or look to move him on?

Spoiler

17_Bobb_01.thumb.png.cb102ca40ce9e94867c226caa8005999.png

And then there's Bork Bang-Kittilsen, a player we signed from Odd last season but he hasn't been able to break into the team.

I think 22 year-old Kjetil Istre's time at Viking may be over. He's had a couple of successful loans in OBOS-ligaen (Tier 2) but he's never been able to break into the team here at Viking. At 22, I think it may be time to move him on.

[Plus... and this is unfair on Kjetil... but, despite having a HGC icon, he's the player that doesn't register as HGC for Eliteserien, even though he does for European club competition. And that still winds me up].

17 year-old Filip Lauritzen is a player we have high hopes for and he's already made two Eliteserien appearances for us. The question is do we keep him around the squad this season or look to loan him out?

Up front, we have 21 year-old Dawid Zając who now counts as HGC. After three successful loan spells in OBOS-ligaen (Tier 2) and a loan last season in Eliteserien with Skeid (finished 10th), I think we need to make Dawid part of the squad this season to give him an opportunity to break into the Viking first team matchday squad.

Oscar Bobb should remain for one more season/contract run out as a mentor to as many young midfielders as possible.

Give him the occasional game set him as a fringe player and as a past team leader he will work wonders with the youngsters with bad attitudes.

FYI, nothing wrong with Wales' calendar - it runs on the 'normal' football calendar of August to April/May.

RE: Oscar Bobb: Is 5k p/w a lot in the grand scheme of things for you? If it's not an insignificant amount then I'd be tempted to sell him, especially as you had no room for him last year, he only has a year left and (presumably) you plan to improve further this season. If he's not been playing, his value as a mentor will be falling as he falls down the hierarchy so if he's just taking a squad place from somebody else he should hit the bricks.

Oscar Bobb is one of five players on £5K per week and there are 10 players we're paying more than that.

wage-budget.png.4c6689eac01365d7e3d7a8c9764110ad.png

I'd say £5K per week was around average and, as we're well under our wage budget, Oscar's salary doesn't unduly concern me.

The question is more around whether or not he'll take a squad registration slot off a young player and thereby block the younger players development.

We'll be resting all of our main first team players today which, probably, is a good thing as we have quite a long injury and fitness issues list.

The aim for this friendly is to start to get an idea of which of the young players we want to keep around the first team squad for the rest of pre-season.

How is the B Team/Viking2 getting along? I remember in previous updates they were pretty comfortable in the division they were in.

As they will be locked at the level they are at (presumably) is it still a good place for your promising players, or are the kids you are producing now too good for that level?

For saying this was more of a Viking XI, rather than our first team, I'm delighted with the performance and the result.

We have Bork Bang-Kittilsen on the transfer list at the moment but I may have to rethink that following his hat-trick today.

Oscar Bobb also put in a great performance.

Robert Reyes and Peter Vesterbekkmo scored our other goals.

Viking II play in PostNord-ligaen Avdeling 2, which is Tier 3.

Tier3_lgTab_2034.thumb.png.7a7f59575ac432c8b2ff0460aa36b9b2.png

Last season we retained the title.

Tier3_rules.thumb.png.01bded9923122c1313025353984769f7.png

But, as you say, non of the Second Teams can be promoted.

That does make it a decent level Viking II are playing at, particularly for players who are under-18 so that they can still train  at Viking.

The plan was always to give two different sets of 11 players 45 minutes each.

We hadn't expected to be 5-0 up at the break though through a superb Edvin Austbø hat-trick plus a goal from Bill Freeman and an Anders Hartveit Ryste penalty.

Bill Freeman also hit the post.

We scored four more after the break - Joakim Berg Nundal with two, plus one each from Julian Gonstad and Kasper Jakobsen.

I thought we were very comfortable for the majority of the game and deserved our two-goal lead over AIK.

Bill Freeman and Anders Hartveit Ryste both scored. Anders also had another two goals disallowed for offside.

AIK's consolation goal was very much against the run of play.

We've arranged three more friendly matches, two before and one after our scheduled two-legged UEFA Europa League Round of 16 tie, although we don't yet know who our opponent will be.

HamKam finished third in OBOS-ligaen last season, losing in the Eliteserien / OBOS-ligaen Playoff Final to Sandefjord.

HamKam made life very difficult for us in the first half and we were fortunate to be nil-nil at the break.

In the second half, I thought we were much improved and deserved the win.

With no Best i vest derby this season following Brann's relegation, we thought we'd arrange a friendly match.

We visited the Brighton & Hove Community Stadium in the League Path and came away with a very credible 2-2 draw.

It was a match we were unfortunate not to win and that gives us confidence going into this first leg away from home.

03_Brighton_02b.thumb.png.6f415be5e934656abd12c0695fa300df.png

Our fans really get behind us in the SR-Bank Arena, but whether or not its an advantage largely depends on the result of the first leg.

03_Brighton_02c.thumb.png.bc0a5ddc8160a97af0c665107dd879a7.png

We're confident, but we're not looking beyond the two legs against Brighton.

It was a much different game to our meeting in the League Path. Much more cagey, with few chances.

Brighton took the lead in the first half and we equalised through Bill Freeman before the break.

In the second half, I thought we were the better team but, unfortunately, Per Joar Hægstad Johnsen gave the ball away in a dangerous area and Brighton regained the lead.

We had chances to equalise, but Gabriel Słonina (7.1) was in fine form in their goal.

:idiot: I'll be honest, that was a mistake as I thought I was substituting Edvin Austbø not Ola Johannes Kleppa Christensen :seagull:

But we know it won't be easy against a very good Brighton & Hove Albion.

I'm thrilled for the players and the supporters that we've progressed to the Quarter Finals of the UEFA Europa League.

It was a very tough game and, even though I thought we were on top for the most part, we could never relax.

Henrik Skogvold gave us an early lead and I thought we were good value but, five minutes before half-time, Brighton equalised.

But then we scored two goals in two minutes to take control going into the break.

First, Mamady Diambou hit a 25-yard volley that flew into the net, before Bill Freeman added our third.

There were no further goals in the second half but the last 15 minutes were very tense.

04_Brighton_09b.thumb.png.00971e585433adae01b0e3eb9de1bafe.png

Tinius Sundell had a great game but I couldn't fault any of our players today.

They gave everything and then some.

We'll give the players a couple of days off... they deserve it.

The players responded in fantastic style.

With an International break coming up, we'll give the players who aren't away with their Nations a week off.

We agreed transfer fees with Brann for Faniel Tewelde and Chelsea for Jacob Widell Zetterström... but were unable to agree personal terms with either as both players wanted salaries that would've made them our highest paid players by a considerable distance.
