What a month.

We started September with a record low attendance for the EFL Trophy as just 928 spectators saw us beat Fulham U21s. Jack Marriott started and scored in his first game for the club in the 4-0 drubbing of Leyton Orient. Cambridge followed, another Marriott goal and another win. Youngster Simeon Hamilton was the toast of Mansfield as his striker helped us to our first away win in League 2. The 2023/24 National League play-off winners Altrincham were also beaten thanks to two Billy Vigar goals, unfortunately the game was marred by an injury to Jack Marriott which will see him out for around a month.

3rd place!! Last seasons NL play-off winners Gateshead just behind in 4th.

A busy month in which we kept our winning streak going, both Crawley and Walsall were beaten 2-0. In between we got another EFL Trophy win this time against Burton from the league above. We lost our way a little by dropping points both away from home against Accrington and then Doncaster. We got back to winning ways at home though, beating both Cheltenham and then Forest Green with relative ease.

Still 3rd, we had a brief spell up in 2nd but were as low at 5th after the Doncaster defeat.

We're pretty good at home, winning eight games from eight played at Roots Hall.

Oof. :(

What a challenge. I wonder if the sale on 1st Nov will be updated for the full game. It will be good for Sarfend fans, but will spoil a terrific challenge.  Good luck. #MartinOut.

The sale is in but not expected to be completed until November 1st. There is a bug at the moment where it is showing Ron Martin and Justin Rees as Chairpeople. Being worked on.

I was going to say, I can remember seeing a comment somewhere saying that it was going to be in the finished version, as there were a couple of issues.

November 2025

A draw-heavy November. We started the month in the FA Cup, a comfortable 3-0 victory over VNS side Horsham. Then the draws, Harrogate and AFC Wimbledon back to back in the league. A winning draw on penalties against Bristol Rovers in the EFL Trophy which saw us win our group. A huge 6-2 win against Tranmere was sandwiched in the middle before drawing to Northampton in the league. We then ended the month with another FA Cup tie, inevitably drawing away to Forest Green.

The draw for the 3rd Round has been made, a tie against Chelsea awaits the winners of the replay.

Still 3rd despite the draws. We have a game in hand on Swindon.

A really good month. We advanced in both the EFL Trophy and the FA Cup. We improved in the league also, beating Newport, Swindon, Northampton and Crawley. We struggle a little with injuries this month though, both first and second choice GK's were injured.

We remain 3rd, three points ahead of Wimbledon and with a game in hand.

I'm late to the BETA party but this has been a good read, well done so far and good luck chasing the latest promotion.

Southend is a very suitable club for a real challenge, and on my list of lower league considerations too (along with Scunthorpe, York and Torquay).

I wouldn't want to see the name Ron Martin though, so will see what their status is on 6th November on the full release.

Thanks @Jogo Bonito

They are, I was surprised we got rid of Martin so soon in the save. We've done undeniably better than I expected we would so far.

A poorer month. A capacity crowd welcomed Chelsea in the FA Cup but we expectedly struggled to a defeat. Derby were also a step too far in the EFL Trophy. The poor results crept in the league briefly as mid-tabled Walsall demolished us. We then demolished Chesterfield back at home, centre back Kensdale netting twice. Two draws were followed by a narrow win away at Leyton Orient.

We drop down to 4th but we have two games in hand.

One player out this month as League One table topping Wrexham turn Berry's head. £400k rising to £525k + 30% profit seals the deal.

We replace Berry with Nathan Redmond, he's 31 but can do a job. We also make our first money signing, Teddy Sharman-Lowe joins for an initial £275k from VNL Bromley.  On deadline day we complete the signing of Rochdale's 19-year-old centre-back George Nevett for £300k all in.

February 2026

Two wins kick February off before Donny brings us back down to earth. We then smash 2nd placed Mansfield at Roots Hall. Another loss, this time to Forest Green. Harrogate came to Southend and returned north after a pasting. Marriott ended a barren spell in front of goal in a 2-2 draw to end the month.

30e313698056e6f31f64700cda86a431.png

We still cling on to 3rd by the barest of margins, a win over Wimbledon would have been ideal.

An unbeaten month that saw us confirm a play-off place. Dubem Eze struck twice against Tranmere, he's done well through the course of the season, playing in a deeper role for us. A good draw against table-topping Mc'Dons, with two defenders scoring the goals.

The table contains a game from April but promotion is in our hands. There are four games remaining for us; we play 23rd, 22nd, 15th and 8th placed teams.

End of Season Review - 2025/26

6243a8b782e896b35a9725e294026129.png

I included the Salford result in the previous monthly update. We needed to get another six points to gain automatic promotion. We beat both Newport and Stevenage to achieve just that.

040f51e5df399bced04489a1aff93fc7.png

An unlikely achievement for us at the beginning of the season. We finished the season with an away draw at Chesterfield and then beat Swindon at Roots Hall.

League 2 - 3rd - media expectations were that we could finish mid-table in 10th place, but the board wanted us to just survive relegation. To finish 3rd is huge, we were play-off bound pretty much all season, hovering between 3rd and 5th.

FA Cup - 3rd Round - Horsham defeated easily, we needed a replay to beat Forest Green. Premier League Chelsea were far too strong for us.

Carabao Cup - 1st Round - out at the first hurdle against fellow East Anglian side Norwich

EFL Trophy - Southern Section 3rd Round - We won our group with relative ease despite using it as a rotation competition. Brentford U21s were disaptched by League Ones Derby County ending our run.

Transfers IN & Transfers OUT - we rightly or wrongly cashed in on Adam Berry (2 goals/1 assist for Wrexham) for upwards of £500k whilst replacing him with Premier League proven Nathan Redmond. We also spent the first money of the save, Sharman-Lowe and Nevett stepping up a division from their respective previous employers.

Top Scorer - Jack Marriott (16) - came in to lead the line with his experience, we should have got more goals from him in all honesty.

Most Assists - Harry Brooke (13) - he switched between MC and DM with relative ease, maybe if we had a consistent DM he could have got more.

Unsung Hero - Collin Andeng-Ndi - the young goalkeeper is on the verge of a national team call-up. 48 appearances this season even with a month out with a broken finger, he conceded 47 goals and made 20 clean sheets. He helped us to concede the least goals in the league at just 44.

79ae0ddf8d6af9991ab10dffa2f940d4.png

We end the season with a healthy balance before season ticket and sponsorship monies are added over the summer.

August 2026

The new season started really well, with an opening-day win over Wycombe. It was all downhill from there for the remainder of the month.

Out of the Carabao at the first hurdle again, this time to Bristol City. An away point with Forest Green and a very good home point against Huddersfield. Two narrow losses followed.

17th, which I would have taken before the start of the month but it could have been better.

One major transfer out with Jamie Birmingham joined Watford for £1.4m + 35% profit clause. He immediately rejoins us on loan. The remainder of the players out, all leave on loan.

Two early signings in Montague for Chelsea and former Chelsea midfielder Chalobah, both of free transfers.

Notable signings are Teden Mengi who was formerly at Luton and Juan Manuel Gutierrez on loan from Swansea.

A great month. A rotated side defeated fellow League One side Bristol Rovers in the EFL Trophy including two goals from winger Redmond. He then scored the only goal as we beat last season's League Two winners Mansfield and then got a draw against bottom side Blackpool. Jack Marriott scored twice and Redmond once more as we beat Buton 4-1 at the Pirelli Stadium, a huge win. We end the month with a 1-0 defeat to Welsh side Wrexham.

A mixed month. A big win over Barnsley was followed by a solid draw against Bristol Rovers. EFL Trophy defeat but we still qualify for the 2nd Round. A rare defeat in the league to Shrewsbury before back-to-back wins over Charlton and MK Dons.

A comfortable 2nd Round win in the FA Cup to kick the month off, we now face Aston Villa in the 3rd Round at Villa Park. Kaufmann continued his goalscoring exploits with goals against Wigan, Crawley and Colchester. A rotated side managed a narrow win over MK Dons before a Christmas blip, with no win in three before a big win over a mid-tabled Fleetwood.

We remain in the playoff picture but Portsmouth and Bristol Rovers both have games in hand above us.

A poor month for us. Just two wins over Bolton and Blackpool and just a point elsewhere. The tie against Aston Villa was closer than we imagined although our goal was a consolation at best.

End of Season Review - 2026/27

18768cf564b9c7fa22cf4be71a06ba12.png

An indifferent end to the season. Four wins from eight was not enough to see us finish in the playoffs but I feel that's a blessing in disguise. Kaufmann went something like 15 games without scoring before netting a hat trick against Forest Green. Without him and Redmond, we would have struggled big-time this season.

League 1 - 8th - we've defied expectations by just staying in the division, the board expected to stave off relegation whilst the media predicted us in 18th.

FA Cup - 3rd Round - Dulwich Hamlet and Tamworth defeated before a narrow loss to Aston Villa.

Carabao Cup - 1st Round - a straightforward loss to Bristol City.

EFL Trophy - Southern Section 3rd Round - We advanced from our group, beat Crawley in the 2nd Round before losing to Portsmouth.

Transfers IN & Transfers OUT - one further player joined in January and we sold Pinnington for what we paid plus 25% profit of the next sale.

Top Scorer - Nathan Redmond (23) - the experienced winger outscored his xG of 13.07

Most Assists - Juan Manual Gutierrez (12) - the on-loan Uruguayan had a good season but we won't be spending the £1.5m to sign him permanently.

U21 Hero - Fraser Harper - signed for free from Wolves, suited to player further up the pitch but the youngster slotted into CM. He played the 5th most minutes, scored five times and made seven assists.

September & October 2027

0f75fa0532d0e3a40050b2e9e7a78688.png

I missed the September update because I wasn't aware there were just three games in that month and had played through to the Doncaster game. Anyway, three wins from three that month, no outstanding performers, and the goals were shared around but a good away win over Exeter.

Into October, the month carried on like the last one, Bolton beaten away from home before returning to Roots Hall for an EFL Trophy game with a rotated side. Another away win before returning to Roots Hall for three home games on the bounce, including a demolition job on Crawley with Dane Scarlett scoring his first goal for the club with a hat-trick. Defeat to Leyton Orient ended the unbeaten run but we picked ourselves up for a big win over Forest Green, Omari Forson netting twice, taking his season tally to seven goals so far. We ended the month with a Friday FA Cup game under the lights away at Bath, a rotated side put four past them with relative ease.

Top by eight points but Plymouth and Crawley have games in hand.

A huge month, winning every game bar one. Kacey Wooster hit some goal-scoring form in the first half of the month with goals against Burton, four against floundering Fleetwood and a double over Stockport. Omari Forson's only goal of the month saw us take all three points against Huddersfield before a returning from injury Redmond netted twice against 2nd placed Plymouth in a away drubbing. We ended the month against Derby in the FA Cup where only 7800 fans saw us win 1-0 and advance to the 3rd Round again.

13 points clear of Bristol Rovers after just 20 games is mind-blowing. We have a huge goal difference already too.

Another busy month. We shouldn't have dropped points against Carlisle. With the two losses this month coming against Plymouth and Bristol Rover who are 2nd and 3rd in the table, the gap has begun to close. Two late goals stole all the points from both the Wrexham and Charlton games, thank you Gideon Kodua. Kacey Wooster smashed in a hat-trick against play-off side Bolton.

A comfortable win over Championship side Millwall in the FA Cup, we advance to the 4th Round for the first time. We faced Everton in the 4th Round and despite taking the lead we were bettered by the side from Liverpool. In the league, we were in pretty good form, winning all four ties.

Incudes a couple of results from Feb. Top by 10 points and a further 10 points ahead of 3rd place.
