West of Scotland Premier Division. (6th Tier). What an absolute pig of a month. :(

This league is a strange one in that we're now 1 level below Highland/Lowland Leagues and there is no auto-promotion here. The top team in this league goes into a 3-way mini-league with the Champions of both the South of Scotland Football League and the East of Scotland Football League. These 3 leagues feed into the Lowland League. There are 3 other feeder leagues at this level, (North Caledonian, Scottish Junior North Premier & Scottish Midlands League) and they each go through the same Playoff process with 3 Champions vying for 1 single promotion spot to the Highland League each season.

I'm comparing this season to last season and doesn't it just show how inconsistent young players can be in FM.

My focus initially was all on the Scottish Cup, (again), and then we went and fell at the 1st hurdle so my focus changed to the league. Then we went and lost 5 of the last 9 games in the league so my focus is back on whatever Cups we're still in, (we're still in 2). It's just been a mess. A real mess.

West Of Scotland Cup.

(The opposition are 2 leagues below us). If we couldn't beat this lot then we deserved shooting. (31j) Fullerton (Unamb) * scored a hat-trick, but I honestly think he is going to score 5 or 6 against someone soon.

Non-League Cup. What an absolute disaster of a season this is turning into. Is that us out of all the Cups already.  (Actually, not it isn't. We are still in 2 more).

West of Scotland Premier Division. (6th Tier). I'm really frustrated by the loss to Kilsyth here. On 89 mins we're winning 2-1 and we concede not once but twice late on to somehow lose a game that we were hugely dominant in.

Youth Day. Mar 2032

If you'd asked me what positions I wanted the best CA players to come through in for this intake I would have said DL/WBL, a BPD & a clinical striker.

1aaf708925f62d8414b0796c14e5ea84.png

This intake is ok. I'm mean it's better than ok. It's good, but I was really hoping for more. I was honestly expecting a 5.0 CA player to come through soon.

  • A 3.5 CA player is still very good, (even if he isn't a 5.0).
  • A Romanian is possibly one of these "unusual" Nationalities that might be better than expected, but they also get everywhere so it just might be normal. #
  • The South African and Nigerian don't count as "unusual" because they're both 2nd Nationalities.
  • 4x (Unamb) players isn't good.
  • 7x Det in single figures players isn't good.
  • 1x (Res), 3x (F.Pro), 1x (Driven), 1x (F.Det), 1x (F.Amb) more than makes up for the (Unamb) & (L.Det).

3ce51e00756aafa9e37a44c5dbef89b8.png

(32e) Dick (Bal) looks great. Really like his attribute balance. His physicals aren't awful and he has some nice Mentals. I'm not sure if I've mentioned my trick of imagining that all attributes currently at 9 turn to 10 and then seeing what the player looks like then. (Free-kicks, Anticipation, Composure, Concentration, Decisions, & Flair could all pop to 10 soon).

63e3e017d53182fbc6e0143150100441.png

(32j) Grădinaru (ROU)(SCO) is just what we need even if he isn't a potential superstar from a obscure Nation. He's a proper left back and we're desperate for one, (so he might just get the game-time and opportunity to develop into something special given the right PA).

7a506e743906a2c1afea4883c70ec10f.png

(32d) Gauld (Res) is a great addition because WB's are so key to us. His physicals are better than decent and I love his crossing and workrate.

ff6f25e84780f3fcd52142bf55339e41.png

(32g) Aremu (ENG)(NGA) (F.Amb) isn't amazing at anything, but he does a little of everything and that's what we want from our midfielders, (despite my preference for ball-players).

3c401123402594fece46710e25dd76f5.png

(32m) Hogarth (F.Pro) might only have 4.0 PA, (but PA can be wrong up as well as down), and I like the look of him, (and were desperate for a DL).

Mar & Apr 2032

3f2c4615efc7abd3ebaeba805d1de04a.png

West of Scotland Premier Division. (6th Tier). This league we're in now is a completely different kettle of fish to everything we have encountered before. This is a proper league. For a start there is no automatic promotion and becoming Champion only gets you an invite to a 3-way Playoff against the 2 other Champions of leagues at this level and if you progress past that then you play the bottom side in the Lowland League.

That's not the biggest obstacle though at all. The biggest obstacle is that because it's hard to get out of, it's created a bit of a log-jam where there are some very good sides all vying for 1 Champions title.

Kello Rovers came from the WoS 3rd Div with us and then promoted again, (with us again), to the 1st Div, and then while we took a 2nd year to get promoted to hear, they just went straight up with 3 consecutive promotions and after 7th last season, they have smashed it this season and I hope to God they win the Playoff.

Kilwinning Rangers scored 71 league goals this season, (17 more than us), and anyone scoring that many goals is going to be a threat.

Kilbirnie Ladeside had the meanest defence, conceding just 20 league goals all season, and although we only scored 2 against them in the league, we did manage 4 goals against them, (without reply), in 2 different Cup wins against them this season.

One of Bellshill or Petershill are the side that gave us such a "doing" in the league below and absolute passed us to death.

There is going to be no easy win in this league anytime soon and even then we have the Playoffs to contend with if we win the league. This is going to be a tough nut to crack. We've won 2 Cups this season and from this moment on and until we get out of this league I will always prioritise league games, (that may or may not include the Scottish Cup).

Squad Stats. May 2031

Squad by Appearances

8aaf9e829ca9aa9a7c125827ca2dc545.png

Wow. Just wow. (30a) Ogilvie (Fickle) 6'2" * has really improved and this is the 1st time I've actually looked at him since this time last season. I've just played him in every game, (except 1 near the end because I rotated everyone ahead of 1 of the Cup FInals. He looks amazing. If I had 1 criticism, it would be that his positioning could be better, but wow he's amazing for this level. The only frustration with him is that he's not very good at taking pens..  He's wanted by Livingston FC of the Championship and is still on his Youth Contract and has 2 year remaining. I "think" that opposition teams can approach him and sign him, but we then get compensation? The alternative is to sign him to a PT contract, but the chances are that will only be for 12 months so I think I'm better off keeping him on his YC?  (I can never remember how these contracts work. Thoughts?

Squad by Goals

51b69e800b47445e35d0949709c4d30f.png

(31j) Fullerton (Unamb) * might not look amazing, but I promise you he is amazing for this level. Although he's only scored 12 league goals in 23(4) appearances, his record of 34 goals and 12 assists in 38(6) appearances makes for much better reading. I've just signed him on for 1 more season, but had to pay him £100 pw to do so Pro club Dunfermline Athletic FC of the Championship. I expect that this coming season will be his last for us. I don't actually know how to make money on players while we're still Semi-Pro. Should I be leaving them on Youth contracts for longer so that when they go we get compensation? I don't even know if that actually happens at this level. (I suspect we will find out soon). Because he's on a PT contract I "think" that it's just like a FT contract in that he's tied to us for the term of the deal, (but the term is only 1 season).

Squad by Assists

5977df9666fdc685724f4d34f5ccfb76.png

(30c) Smith (Bal) * is the best of a poor bunch on the right side of our front 3. For some reason we've produced LOADS of lefties, but far fewer decent righties. He struggled a little this season, but fingers crossed he will really kick on next season. If he doesn't produce next season then his time will be up.

Squad by Average Rating

(31i) Kelly (F.Sport) * has also struggled at times this season and we need much more from him next season. 13 goals and 8 assists in 32(2) appearances in all competitions isn't enough for a side that scores as many goals as we do.

Left back is the weakest area of our squad and (30l) Docherty (F.Pro) is comfortably our best left back. That he has suffered a broken leg and will be out for 6-9 months and will likely miss most of next season is an absolute disaster. :(

(32c) Donald (Unamb) is the highest rated player by PA who I'm not showing you for other reasons. I think I skipped over him a little on Youth Intake day because he is both (Unamb) + (L.Det) and we all know how that turns out.

04ffcec772b1ff8ec76fb7f70a79afbc.png

(30b) McAllister(NIR)(F.Det) * is the best player at the club. I mean he's amazing! I've just had to pay him £200 pw to keep him for another season and I'm astonished that the only club interested in him is Threave Rovers, (who have just been promoted from the league below). We really missed him when he was on International duty.

I think you are right about the contracts, at least that how i think they work. Ogilvie looks a really good GK for so young, his composure and passing could do with improving along with balance but thats nitpicking.

Exactly. He's far from perfect, but I was stunned when I looked at him. he was obviously decent to start off with, but I haven't looked at him all season because he was just playing every game.

May 2031? That's EXACTLY where I'm up to. I just fluked promotion to the Premier, so it's interesting to read your latest to see how out of our depth we are!

Brilliant that we're at the same spot. :applause:

As well as this looking like it's a big step up, and the board wanting us to win the league, (although not the same as promotion), I think we've also reached the point where Pro clubs are starting to take an initial interest in our players. We've had an offer of a trial for someone, but no actual offers yet, but many of our better players are now being watched by Championship clubs. I'm going through the contracts right now trying to eke another season out of some of them. The better players are as good as gone I think and the only thing up for debate is when they leave and if we get a fee for them.

Obviously we had a good intake at the end of last season, and as well as a very good midfielder we got some much needed WB's. The problem is we're short of firepower up front and I can't see us challenging for the title and there is nobody I can go and sign.

After what happened in Colombia I'm concerned that we will finish 2nd - 4th and I will get sacked again.

4c4f8b3a6e0c49dd55352dd97f844fe1.png

I just can't see how we get 16 points better. Kello Rovers actually finished bottom of the Playoff Group so they will be back again for another go next season.

4967d73f486dcfc1b72e032dc1e71411.png

I'm hoping that my ICON status grants me some amount of short-term failure, but that isn't what happened in Colombia. I would be gutted if it happened again. This is a little different because at least this is a normal league and they are making a distinction between winning the league and getting promoted, (thank God).

23101258ff03d84d60a4945099dcea62.png

I'm going to give the league my 100% focus next season and rotate the squad for every single Cup game, but I just can't see us scoring enough goals.

I'm desperate for a proper striker. Even (31j) Fullerton (Unamb) *, (who's brilliant, isn't exactly what I want). He's more of a rounded 10 than a clinical 9. I just want someone to hammer goals in and celebrate and then wait for his next chance.

That's sobering. I've just scraped into 3rd place on the last day with a midtable squad. I do think my intake has improved the overall quality of the smalls squad, but not enough to establish us in this league. After no upgrades in SEVEN years, we got one at the end of the season and I'm anticipating more to come, but it still puts us YEARS behind you, so if your academykids are not good enough to get you up, I've got no chance.

Still, I'll give it my best shot, but if this league proves to be a glass ceiling for the likes of us, I'm already cooking my next career!

After no upgrades in SEVEN years, we got one at the end of the season and I'm anticipating more to come, but it still puts us YEARS behind you, so if your academykids are not good enough to get you up, I've got no chance.

Maybe your more expectations will be tempered by that. My board were happy with a mid-table finish the 1st season and that seemed right. Even if they had said "challenge for the title" or something else then it would have been more realistic. To expect us to win the league just seems a bit much. Then again, I've thought that a few times already in this save and we've generally done pretty well so you never know. I just think that youngsters are so inconsistent and firepower firepower firepower. I just don't think we will score enough goals to mount a serious challenge even if everyone stays. :(

Still, I'll give it my best shot, but if this league proves to be a glass ceiling for the likes of us,

I definitely don't think it's a glass ceiling for us. I just think they need to give us time. We're starting to spend significant money now and ran at a loss of approx £100k last season, but if I was Chairman here I would balance that off with how much profit we made the previous season and maybe alternate expectation between Cups and League success. We may have crashed out of the Scottish Cup at the 1st hurdle last season, but we still won 2 Cups, so maybe give us 1 more season to make some money in the Scottish Cup and then the season after that have a proper tilt at getting promoted with a slightly older squad.

We still have 1 single player at the club who's not a teenager, and he's about to leave.

Even if we somehow get through the play-off bottleneck of this league, we're then in the Lowland League. It's half-full of ex-league sides, with the other half including a few monied clubs, even those with tycoons (in my save at least). Winning it takes you to two rounds of play-offs.

I think, with the prize money for the other cups ('tinpots') derisory, the ONLY competition with real life-changing cash is the Scottish Cup, and so much depends on a series of lucky draws, firstly jammy ones to get past Round 4, and then the right away draw to rake in the gate money. That ought to be a one-in-five years likelihood. Still, we'll see how it goes.

My next idea depends on me doing a better job in the editor than I've ever done before. I want to take this 13-tier file and gut it, creating a CELTIC LEAGUE. 13 tiers of Scottish, Irish (Norn&Rep) and Welsh regional leagues below level 4/5 and then amalgamating them in the higher (league) tiers. It would involve a lot of swapping teams around and renaming leagues and cups, but not changing the structure of the file, as we've proved it works. It would also allow me to research and post lovely new lower league grounds and stories. At the same time, in the background I'll run a naughty, chaotic version of the English league which will be independent, but an interesting one to check in periodically to see what's going on.

Something jumped out when I was looking at the rules for this league: 'PW' - games won on penalties. So how does this work? Is it:

Win - 3 points, lose 0 points, draw > penalty shoot-out: win it 2 points, lose it, one point? I know it's in a preseason cup competition in real-life, but has it always been in this league? What difference does it make to you as a manager? Do you add penalty-taking to training sessions, or make sure you have the best penalty-takers on the park by the 90th minute, or anything?

Great spot. I hadn't noticed that.

In terms of what difference it makes to ME as a manager, it makes absolutely no difference because I'm not going to be picking the players who take them or who's on the pitch at the end of the game.

Just in case anyone is unaware by the way, your list of normal penalty takers for normal penalties has absolutely zero impact on who takes pens in a penalty shootout. It's a whole completely different thing. I would like to see it default to that, (but it doesn't).

With regards to what others should do, I would advise putting those with the best morale/body language on pens and completely ignoring how high or low their penalty taking attribute is. Don't worry about technique or composure either. Just pick players who aren't stressed and chances are you will win more than you use.

I suppose the 1 bit of advice I would give to you and anyone else playing in Scotland, is to find a GK who saves pens. I can't tell you what one of them looks like, but if you have a bad GK that saves penalties, then maybe you make him your Cup GK and I honestly think he wins you more than he loses you.

I definitely wouldn't be messing about with training sessions, because all that does is train the penalty taking attribute, and that's about as much use as a Boris Johnson.

I've just released a GK who looked good, and was great at scoring pens but rubbish at saving them. I replaced him with a younger GK who performs better and saves pens, but can't score them.

Season Expectations. Well this is good news. They only want a Top half finish now. Not sure how or why it has changed but I'm ecstatic. :D Maybe I was looking at something wrong before.

Saved Team Selections

2032.1. We're starting to get a bit more CA on show now, (especially in midfield), but there are also PA gaps appearing, (particularly at the back).

Wages. We're starting to spend more and more as we transition over fully from NC to PT and Youth contracts. We're still well within our wage budget, but some of our better player are getting paid an awful lot now, (as far as I'm concerned for this level of football).

679c1a1831bd74760ce08bfb716e3bb8.png

Everyone in the 1st Team or 2nd Team XI's are contracted for at least another year, but I do wonder about the wisdom of leaving some players on Youth contracts, (cheaper and longer). Until I know what sort of compensation we will be due it's hard to make an informed opinion. I guess we will just press on and find out and then I will know for next time. Whoever leaves there's another intake just 9 months away.

Season Preview. Now this doesn't make sense. How can we be 2nd favourites for the title and last seasons Champions Kello Rovers be rated 100-1 outsiders?

I've just checked and they haven't lost even 1 single player who played at least 1 league game last season.

Oh yes they have. (I had missed released players).

2 decent centre-mids.
1 average striker.
1 good centre-half.
1 average winger.
1 average centre-mid.

Still doesn't make sense though.

But on the Club vision screen even the 5th year in the 5 year plan is just a top half finish.

West of Scotland Premier Division. (6th Tier). I know it's only 1 game and against the 900-1 outsiders, but by complaint about last season was that our wide strikers didn't contribute enough. Well they scored all 3 goals in this game and provided 1 of the assists so that's not a bad start. Kello Rovers lost their opening game to Caley Braves, so maybe the bookies do know what they're talking about. I don't know what has changed between last season and this season with Kello Rovers, but obviously something has. Retirements perhaps? Loans that have now expired? Different manager?

West of Scotland Premier Division. (6th Tier). As pleased as I am with scoring 11 goals from 3 games, I think I'm even happier to only concede 2 goals. Let's see if we can keep that going.

Dynamics. The problem with this phase of a save like this is that there is nobody at the club long enough to develop into a Team Leader. Once again we don't have any player who isn't a teenager at the club.

International call-ups. We have the 1st call-up to a Scottish aged-group squad. It's only the U18's, but considering we're playing in the 6th tier, it really is a big deal. The only problem is that with only 2 players called-up, there is no postponements, (assuming there are ever postponements at this level). The draw has been made for the Scottish Cup Fifth Round and we've been drawn away for the 4th consecutive time, this time travelling to Partick Thistle of the Championship.

6b62293c8bb2639696a28876de37ad0a.png

The draw has also been made for the Scottish Cup Sixth Round and if we get past Partick Thistle then we have a 5th consecutive away draw and this time we're up against whoever gets through 1st East Fife v Celtic, and then the winners of that v Rangers.

46635caf66223b37e949ec19ef1fabd0.png

So basically, if we get past Partick Thistle then we are guaranteed an away game at either Celtic Park or Ibrox. We just have to get past Partick Thistle, (and that's highly unlikely because they're a Pro club who are in the Championship), but they're bottom of the Championship and have only won 2 league games all season, so..... maybe just maybe.

It's only £700 + 40%, but Hamilton are 5th in the Championship and IF we sold, (we're not selling), who knows what sort of return we might get on the 40%, but Hamilton haven't sold a player for more than £100k in 8 years, (so let's not get too excited). Still, it is an important milestone.

Vey much so. We've fairly racked up the giant-killing points over the last few years.

2030/31.

2 years ago we beat Abbey Vale who were in South of Scotland League and they were 1 league above us.
2 years ago we beat Blantyre Soccer Academy who were in WoS Premier and they were 1 league above us.
2 years ago we beat Brora Rangers who were then in League 2, (now in Highland League), and they were 3 leagues above us.
2 years ago we beat Raith Rovers (on pens), who were then in League 1, (now in Championship), and they were 4 leagues above us.

This season we beat Partick Thistle who are in the Scottish Championship which is 4 leagues above us.

Youth Intake Day. Mar 2033

I honestly thought we would get better CA players through than we're seeing. I'm guessing that the low Rep is at fault here. It's hard to work out what sort of PA we're producing at the moment, but the last poached player was either 110-120 or 120-130 PA I think, so that's decent.

Apologies that some of the players have signed contracts already. I named them all and offered contracts and I think because I was a bit peeved about the lack of significant CA in the intake I forgot to post the update on Day 1.

As you can see, (33l) has already increased his PA from the Day 1 value.

Time to look for a new HOYD surely. Too many unambitious players

I want to give him some time.

I believe that you don't get the full benefit of a HoYD immediately, (because it takes time), so the (Unamb) players we see coming through under him now would have been brought to the Academy and developed under the old HoYD.

I also believe that Det is more important than Amb and if I look at that last intake, (just because it's easy to find), only 3 of the 16 players had Det values in single figures, and 1 of them was 7.

As if to balance out the low Amb in 5 players, we have 4x (F.Pro), 1x (Pro), 1x (Res).

The last thing I would say is that while the HoYD has an impact in personalities of Youth Intake players, I think the impact is tiny, (similar to that of 1 level of tutoring/mentoring/whatever it's called now).

I think I could put a M.Pro or a M.Citizen in there and not make much of a difference, (although there absolutely would be some).

What I would add is that just because there are lots of (Unamb) players in this intake doesn't mean that's not an improvement on what went before.

2024. 7x (Unamb) + 1x (L.Det).

5a8ea937ae9a1329eb27803178d44d61.png

2025. 6x (Unamb) + 2x (L.Det).

2026. 6x (Unamb), + 1x (L.Det) + 1x (Slack).

9fead1bf157af0459b4a95b9d96411d2.png

2027. 4x (Unamb) + 1x (L.Det). This is the best intake so far in terms of fewest bad personalities, but actually there are also very few good personalities and a multitude of sins hidden under the "Balanced" banner. I think the 2033 intake had better all-round personalities than this one.

915c7d82a8df8c4df4bdbcadba7efdad.png

2028. 4x (Unamb), 2x (L.Det), 1x Spineless.

7e6bf96062343259b352f36707711e42.png

2029. 2x (Unamb) + 1x (L.Det) + 1x (Casual). That's the best intake in terms of really bad personalities, but it also has loads of "middling-bad" personalities and only 1 that I would class as positive at all. It might seem like this is a better intake, (in terms of personalities), but this one is actual awful despite having the least amount of (Unamb) so far.

8c30c1faece23a358868b9008124dc67.png

2030. 2x (Unamb). This is probably the best intake to this point in terms of Personalities.
1x (Pro), 2x (F.Pro), 2x (F.Det).

a2362610c470c2087e34b9895984daf8.png

2031. 7x (Unamb), 1x (L.Det), 1x (Casual). This is the worst intake to this point for personalities.

11beeff2d8474024cc0c8302203dcd0a.png

2032. 4x (Unamb) + 1x (L.Det).
1x (Res), 1x (Driven), 3x (F.Pro), 1x (F.Det), 1x (F.Amb).
This is probably the best intake for personalities to this point.

aaaf33e4a13d39ec70d9515db5819e21.png

2033. 5x (Unamb)
1x (Res), 1x (Pro), 4x (F.Pro),
I would actually say that this intake has one of the better personalities from the intakes in the save so far, and sometimes I think it's easy to see lots of (Unamb) and get carried away. I appreciate that SI tell us that Pro, Det, Amb.... (and something else I think but can't remember right now), are all equally important in terms of developing young players, but that's not my experience at all and I think that it's very much Pro, Det & Amb in that order.

You see this intake as quite negative but I felt that the personalities were pretty decent based on what had gone before, and the only reason I didn't comment about it was because I had the hump that we didn't get more CA in the intake. After going back and looking at the other intakes and taking a glance at the (Det) levels, I'm even happier now.

The personalities in this intake aren't good at all. But they are better than what went before.

West of Scotland Premier Division. (6th Tier). 3 consecutive 300+ home attendances in the league. Despite only losing 1 league game all season, it appears as if we're going to finish 2nd even if we win our remaining 2 games. Kilwinning Rangers just keep churning out those wins and are up to 8 wins on the bounce in the league now. They're 2 points behind and have a game in hand so if they win their 3 games they win the league.

The kicker however is that we play then in our next game.  Winner takes al, (and we're away).

Apr 2033.

West of Scotland Premier Division. (6th Tier). We lost the title-decider against Kilwinning Rangers and with it the league. :(

It's a bit of a kick in the teeth to only lose 2 league games all season and to not win the league, but Kilwinning deserved to win the title and we just have to congratulate them and hope they get promoted away from us via the Playoffs. We still have 2 Cup Finals to play next month, (3 days apart), so the 1st Team will get a chance at the 1st one, and the 2nd Team will get a chance at the other.

Squad Stats. Jun 2033.

Squad by Appearances. We played 51 games in all competitions so I like to think that the workload hasn't been too high for anyone. No outfield player has made more than 35 starts.

Squad by Goals. We needed to see big improvement in this area because las season nobody other than(31j) Fullerton (Unamb) * scored double-figure goals. We got our improvement across the board and 5 other players joined him in the 10+ club.

Squad by Avg Rating. Last season (30o) McDougall (F.Det) was out on loan, and when he came back I looked at him and wondered why I had let him go, (because he looked decent). He started on the right of a front 3 and was instrumental in our improvement with 34 goal involvements.

Squad by CA. We only have 9 player at the club with better than 2.0 CA which shows enormous room for development. (30b) McAllister(NIR)(F.Det) * is the best of these and it's his CA that is really helping the PA of the rest of the squad be so visible.
