4-2-3-1 ATTACK Overachievement in Greece

Recommended Posts

Hi all - long-time lurker and player of FM since 97/98 series. This is my first time posting a tactic due to it having great success. I was playing with (1) FM AI and data update; and (2) Greek 3rd division added; and (3) attribute masking, no editor activated. I decided to take a team from Greek 3rd division and was playing with some realistic restrictions where I aim to play by overpaying for best Greek players and getting few foreign players.

In my 9th season (after 5 seasons in 1st division, ranging finishes between 2nd, 3rd and 4th), I changed tactics and bought a few better players and instantly soared in the league. But what confirmed the success of the tactic is that I am ongoing Greece manager for 4 years now with a decent performance but a poor squad and after adopting this tactic after a lackluster start to the EUro qualifying campaign (0-8 win away to Estonia, 1-1 home draw to Israel and 1-4 loss away to Switzerland), I managed 5 consecutive wins (including home and away to Portugal) to finish 1st and qualify for my first international competition!

The tactic is a 4-2-3-1 Attacking tactic and the only key information is:

-Change Time Wasting from "Rarely" to "Often" when wanting to hold a lead;

-Notwithstanding the low crosses, the striker should have well rounded physical features, including aerial ability as there will be lots of aerial battles. Screenshot of my new striker in my 1st season with the tactic below.

Individual instructions:

-Both WBs: Stay Wider

-Both CBs: Shoot Less Often (I switch from BPD to CD if required for role of player)

-DMCR/Segundo Volante: Shoot Less Often

-AML: Cuts Inside With Ball

-AMR: Sit Narrower

-AMC: Tackle Harder (can switch from AM-A to AP-A if required for role of player)

-I bought the below guy on a free transfer who wasn't a striker at all but had the right physical characteristics. I taught him the ST role all of pre-season and he was Accomplished by the start of the season and Natural by December:

My results as Greek national manager after switching tactics (first game with the new tactic was the 1-0 home win to Portugal):

When I want to play slightly more defensive, I have a Positive version of the 4-2-3-1 but it hasn't been as successful. Really, playing attacking is the more rewarding option!
