Player due to retire before CL final

Can anyone help me out here? It's 2026 and Lionel Messi is due to retire on the 26th of May. I've a Champions League final on the 30th (a week away). I'm not sure whether this is a bug or not, or will Messi decide the day before that he'll retire after the match? I don't want to ask him to reconsider retirement as he's contracted for another year and his attributes are fast diminishing, but he currently remains a key player for me.

I wouldn’t say it’s a bug but it’s an example of the retirement code being completely unaware of upcoming fixtures. Worst case all players should retire in July or August so that any important games are out of the way.

have you got the in-game editor? might be a justifiable use of it to change retirement to a week later (can this be done??)

I see it as a bigger problem that you can actually get Messi to come back to Europe when he has quite clearly said that it's not going to happen. His career path should take him to Argentina and Newell's Old Boys.

Players will usually (always?) postpone their retirement date until after the final game of their team's season

Phew! He postponed his retirement for another two weeks on the day of his retirement.
