The first Cockfosters intake doesn't provide any standouts when compared to all of the old Bush Hill players we've got in the ranks. Looking at Supple, he could be good, but I was expecting more for a 5-star striker. I'm still disappointed we had to release him.

We managed some decent wins and were helped by 2 goals by Harrison on his debut against 3rd place Raynes Park. Realistically I think 9th is the highest we could potentially finish now this season - with our end of season form picking up (as it always seems to with the new intake) I hope we can get those extra 10 points next season to end up in the playoff mix again.

We limped across the line into a solid 11th place finish. It's an acceptable result for our first year at this level, but I really want us to push on & continue to rise up the leagues - I'm hoping for at least the playoffs next season. Ruth broke the record for number of clean sheets on his last game for us (I played our backup GK in the final game of the season) before he moves to Bohemians in the summer. Clarke is now our (undisputed) all-time league appearance maker and despite not being able to score frequently over the past few seasons, Hamilton is now our top league goalscorer with 50.

cockfosters.thumb.png.e3214edccaea8ef7a52db69983992eb9.png     2028/29 Season

Both teams had good seasons, but nothing remarkable. I expected to have a season of consolidation, figuring out how best to run 2 extra teams and organise the players between each squad. There were a lot of loans from Bush Hill and I expect that to continue next season as both clubs will be looking for a promotion push.

Facilities

Over the course of the season (that I haven't already mentioned) I was able to reduce the club's youth recruitment and increase the Youth Level (although not 100% what Youth Level dictates, any insight would be appreciated).

Alexis Maton filled in as our attacking centre-mid this season and his performances earned him some interest from elsewhere. I managed to agree a £60,000 bid, potentially rising to £110,000 with 40% PoNS and we got to keep him for another 12 months but then he declined the contract offer! Luckily, he also turned down the £110,000 upfront with no add ons bid too, that our chairman accepted on the club's behalf. The number of bids and the amount each bid is for is getting higher for a few of our players and I think we could be on the brink of making our first big sale.

£40,000 for a striker who never performed for us & who's contract was about to run out is great! Greenidge got an opportunity in the first team mid-season but immediately got injured. He always promised more than he delivered and to have received any amount of money for him is great.

bushhill.thumb.png.e4840e95794a32928d718c65d727639a.png     GK Johnnie Ruth

Johnnie Ruth has completed his transfer to Bohemians. They are paying him £160pw and we have him on loan for another season before he moves to the Irish Premier Division. We have a 40% Profit of Next Sale clause on him and seeing that he is valued between £400,000 - £1,200,000 is eye-watering! If he was sold at those value, for us that would mean a £155,200 - £475,200 cut, which would change the status of the club's financial security and hopefully the board would again be open to more facility improvements. I am aware, however, that he could be released by Bohemians 6 months after he leaves us (at the end of the season) and we would get nothing from the clause.

Other Enfield Clubs 2028/29 Season

Brimsdown have been relegated out of the playable leagues. If and when they return, I need to make sure that they stay in the playable leagues. Enfield Town & Enfield Borough both came close to relegation too. On the plus side, Hinton & Enfield FC made the playoffs again, losing in the final and in the semis respectively.

Nwaneri has only appeared as a sub for Arsenal and Dorrington has only appeared twice for Spurs as both of their values plummet this season.

Nwaneri had a big increase in wage, so it is quite surprising (& worrying) his value almost halved. Interesting to see that Kyrpianou took a pay cut of almost a half to go from the English 2nd tier to the Spanish 1st. There have also been no new entries into the top 10 for the past two seasons.

Monetary Transfers

We've got our first two players on this list (albeit near the bottom)! Kyprianou's last move to Sunderland 6 years ago was the 8th most expensive transfer by an Enfield player and he's moved up to 4th on the list now behind the two ex-Tottenham players.

Internationals

I realise I miscalculated last year when I said there were no international goals scored: Barnum-Bobb scored 2x and Daniel Phillips scored 1x.

Year Total Caps Total Goals Youth Caps Youth Goals
2024 +61 +1 +1 0
2025 +63 +5 +6 0
2026 +52 +6 +8 0
2027 +40 +5 +4 0
2028 +55 +3 0 0
2029 +45 +1 0 0
Total 316 21 19 0

The only goal scored this season was another by Barnum-Bobb, taking him level with Phillips for the most international goals scored by an Enfield player. Rio Cardines is only 22 years old and shooting up the list into 9th in only his 2nd season playing international football for Trinidad & Tobago. Phillips is closing in on Roy Chipolina's total with Barnum-Bobb & Dorsett trailing close behind.

New Entry into top 10

Ryan Mason has had a great rise over the past few seasons. Since leaving Tottenham as a coach and having a couple of seasons off, he saved Bristol City from relegation from the Championship before moving to Nottingham Forest who he left top of the Championship in January to join Premier League Brentford where he rose to 10th in his first season.

Obika finished his career in Scotland with Motherwell, retired & moved to manage Shrewsbury's U18s team and then moved back to Scotland where he was hired as manager of St Johnstone, but unfortunately he didn't last more than 6 months.

He managed to get through the first group stage of World Cup qualifiers and now faces a tough group to try and make the World Cup proper. What an achievement it would be if he could pull it off! He was narrowly relegated from the Nations League Group A having an inferior goals scored in comparison to Guadelope (in a competition where you don't even play each other team in your group once!? 4 games each for 6 teams? Doesn't seem fair!) He did lose in the playoff final round before entering the Gold Cup, but it is the furthest the country has got in the competition since the start of this save.

Club Managers

I left a placeholder for this last season and never got back to it (I was too excited to keep playing the game!) so this update will try to cover manager movements both last season and two season's ago.

Previously mentioned managers

Ryan Mason we've already spoken about his rise to Premier League management: Bristol City -> Nottingham Forest -> Brentford.

Jonathon Obika didn't last very long in his first managerial role at St Johnstone, only 175 days in fact, and they went on to finish rock bottom of the SPL.

Mikele Leigertwood managed Reading (alongside his National duties) where he managed a 12th place finish in League One in his first year in charge and then he lost in the playoff final the following season after finishing 6th, but won the Bristol Street Motors Trophy to cap an impressive campaign.

Long-standing manager Danny Chapman was relegated with Harlow in his 15th year at the helm, but has guided them back to the 8th tier via the playoffs in his 17th season (after finishing 6th the year before).

Previous Bush Hill Rangers Staff

Chris Arthur is Tier 8 Wickham's boss. He was employed more-than-halfway through a season where he couldn't save them from relegation (to tier 8) and has narrowly missed out on a playoff spot by finishing in 6th place for two years running.

Levi Pogue was relegated with Yorkshire Main in his first season with them, but finished 8th in tier 11 last season.

Lew was relegated with Welling Park and still remains there in the unplayable divisions below tier 11.

The number of players & staff from Enfield over the years:

One of the first milestones within this challenge is to increase the number of Enfield players & staff in the game. We can do this by keeping players on contract who would otherwise leave to potentially not find a new club and we can also do this by being in charge of multiple clubs (more youth players come through non-AI-controlled teams). I've been employing both of these tactics, so let's see if the numbers are increasing.

Enfield Player Count

Each year: +20, +12, +11, -5, +4, +20
A big jump last season will be partly down to me taking over Cockfosters.

Screenshot2024-09-20at10_14_28.png.98cf1e5898b3f7f6247b36f309bab7c5.png

Enfield Staff Count

Each year: +6, +9, +1, +1, +1, +1
A slow and steady increase over the past 5 seasons.

Squads

At the start of pre-season, this is what each of the squads for our teams looked like:

bushhill.thumb.png.df27a21cd3ce400e00527ec332ed267a.png

Tier 8: Bush Hill Rangers 1st & 2nd XI

The best of the players available to us.

Screenshot2024-09-19at19_43_13.thumb.png.b4c835046c7b4cfd5e4acf95a6d23b0f.png

Bush Hill Rangers Backups XXII

Players over 21, to be sold to Cockfosters.
Players under 21, to be loaned to Cockfosters.

Screenshot2024-09-19at19_43_57.thumb.png.126a5472d139cf4ff077843369b9a653.png

Bush Hill Rangers Surplus

All players to be sold (preferably) or loaned, with 1st priority to Cockfosters.

Screenshot2024-09-19at19_44_09.thumb.png.47ca0b17a05309321cb75b409dd2cb72.png

cockfosters.thumb.png.b7fda0b4a1a3b310be9b11f407d59ae8.png

Tier 9: Cockfosters 1st & 2nd XI

The best players currently at the club.
As new transfers or loans come in, I expect a lot of these players to lose their spot in this team.

Screenshot2024-09-19at19_51_59.thumb.png.9315bb4e6f9afd69dac6233d430a68f9.png

Tier 11: Cockfosters Reserves 1st & 2nd XI

Currently the club does not have enough players to fill the 22 spots.
As players are demoted from the first team, they will fill in here.

Screenshot2024-09-19at19_59_40.thumb.png.a9d03d6cf9558df598b5b89cfc14e4e5.png

Cockfosters Surplus

If any player falls outside of the 3x 22-man squads above, they will be sold (preferably) or loaned.

No less than 20 players made the move from Bush Hill Rangers to Cockfosters (3 permanent transfers, 17 loans) and therefore the Cockfosters squads look quite different!

Tier 9: Cockfosters 1st & 2nd XI

Only 1x player (Fox) kept their place in the starting Xi and 4x more in the squad, the rest are all players brought in from Bush Hill Rangers.

Tier 11: Cockfosters Reserves 1st & 2nd XI

The Reserves team contains most of the original first team, including 1 of the loanees and 1 of the signings from Bush Hill Rangers.
(The 4th signing from BHR -> CFS is GK Tom Stewart and he didn't make it into any of the squads and is lingering in the Cockfosters U21s)

image.thumb.png.87b6e29dd302db82e60b449ad0247808.png     Club Facilities

I've noticed something pretty bad... At the start of the save i was trying to maximise all facilities. Then I got some advice that Youth Recruitment might be detrimental to getting Enfield-born players, which makes sense, so I started lowering that again - but it seems to have had an adverse affect on our Youth Coaching. Let's have a look at our facility rankings over the years:

Year Training Facilities Youth Facilities Youth Recruitment Youth Coaching Youth
Level
2023 2 1 1 1 0
2024 2 1 3 3 0
2025 2 1 9 10 0
2026 4 1 12 14 0
2027 4 1 11 14 0
2028 4 1 5 14 0
28/04/29 4 1 -1 14 0
12/05/29 4 1 1 1 0
01/07/29 4 1 1 3 0
18/08/29 4 1 1 6 0

We managed to raise our YR & YC to 12 & 14 respectively at maximum. Then when I started to reduce our YR, it jumped down by 1 at first, then by 6 and by 6 again, taking it into the negative?! (I guess not many people use the feature to reduce YR). But crazily that happening seems to have reset our facilities and we had both YR & YC at 1. Without any upgrades, and only within the space of a few months, our YC rating has increased back up to 6 - and I will keep checking month by month to see where it settles.

I also don't know much about Youth Level. What does this represent? I'm going to do some research!

01/07/29 1 4 1 1 4

Same problem with Cockfosters. On one hand, I'm happy that this hasn't broken the game. On the other hand, the reset of facilities could really impact our progress. Now that we have 1 in Youth Recruitment at both clubs I am not going to touch it and solely focus on increasing both clubs Youth Coaching (and Youth Level).

One of the players I tried to move from Bush Hill Rangers to Cockfosters was Ndefo, but he wanted a bigger wage than we can afford and with us making a bid between teams it kicked off a few other teams to approach him and he left the project for Colliers Wood.

What a start to the season! We've come flying out of the blocks. I was hoping to hit the promotion playoffs this season, but this month's form has already got me thinking about going up automatically as Champions! There is still a long way to go though..

Failed Transfer Out

For context, our finances: We've never had more than £200,000 in the bank and we have either £245,000 or £325,000 in debt (still can't work out which is the right number).

Screenshot2024-09-21at14_13_01.png.44ff14209a5c3bf9b1937435b6fc65e0.png

Our best player Jake Clarke's contract is up at the end of the season. He's had interest in him every window, but never anything substantial. I was planning to try to sell him this window with a loan back clause and hopefully a decent percentage of next sale too, but out of no where all of the bids dried up. At the end of the transfer window, I hit panic stations and hired an intermediary to see if I could drum up any interest and to my surprise Scunthorpe came in with a massive bid which I managed to negotiate to:

Screenshot2024-09-21at14_12_50.png.97a4d72cd564ad219dfd92b3def208d7.png

Only for Clarke to reject the contract.

Screenshot2024-09-21at21_26_02.png.b7beb0f32d4edebfc8e635b2720b2860.png

This is the 2nd time we've had a £300,000 bid for one of our players agreed and for the transfer to fall through due to personal terms. This sort of money would be transformative at this level, and especially with the 50% percentage of next sale AND the fact that he won't sign a new contract so it's looking like we'll lose him for nothing at the end of the season, we could really have done with the money!!!

Successful Transfer Out

We received a bid of £1,000 +20% of next sale for Maton and I managed to push the negotiations up to £115,000 +40% of next sale. He's now worth up to double that value and is on a huge £600pw! He's played over 100 games for us and will be missed, but we need to cash in on players who are pushing to leave and I had promised Maton that I would sell him if the right price came in.

Cockfosters have managed to sign Bryan, someone who i have been trying to sign for Bush Hill Rangers for a long time. He is a brilliant player, but also agreed to come in as our Assistant Manager & Scout. We now have 3 members of staff, covering 5 roles at the club and Bryan will be put in charge of team selections for the U21s and U18s.

We were 2-0 up against Hanwell and capitulated to get knocked out of the FA Cup. We could really do with a cup run to help the finances. That meltdown was the first sign of things to come later in the month where we couldn't hold onto a lead and some how we haven't won a game in 5 (despite knocking out league-leaders Harrow on penalties in the FA Vase).

We are becoming quite the draw specialists. The two nil-nil games we were absolutely dominant the whole game and couldn't score. I'm wondering if it might be time to rip up the tactic and start with a new approach. We are 4th, but we could and should be challenging Harrow for the top spot.

bushhill.thumb.png.100c51b8aa33239e218cd005027051bc.png     Youth International Call Up

I wasn't expecting to have anyone called up for any national team until we were (at least) a few more divisions higher, but Johnnie Ruth has been called up by England U19s! We sold him to Bohemians at the end of last season for £11,250 which seems like a terrible deal now - but we do still have a 40% of profit on his next sale, which selling for his value now would be £215,200 to £475,200, and his presence in the England set up should only increase his value!

He's among 19x players at Premier League clubs, 2x Championship players and 1x La Liga player and as a player on loan at an 8th tier club from an Irish Premier league team, he is very much punching above his reputation!

Changes went terribly, before they got better. We went 4-0 down after I switched up the tactics for the Horndean game. A bit (a lot) of tinkering later and we managed to get back to 4-2 and have been on a winning run ever since! We're just about hanging on to the last playoff spot, but my dreams of automatic promotion are fading away with Harrow's dominance.

I've managed to get most of the 1st & 2nd XI onto long-term contracts. The top 4 players who have imminently expiring contracts are:

  • Striker Hamilton, who has agreed a deal, but not signed it yet.
  • Centre-back Jake Clarke who we almost sold for £300,000 +40% PoNS in the summer, but will likely be leaving on a free at the end of the season as his wage demands are way too high and we have League One clubs sniffing around for his signature.
  • Goalkeeper Johnnie Ruth will be finishing his year loan with us after his move to Bohemians.
  • Striker Hanson who I brought in on loan for the season from Hinton as an extra backup forward for the season after we sold Maton for £115,000.

As expected Jake Clarke has been offered an end of contract deal with another team. There were League 2 and even some League 1 team's interested in his services in November, but he was initially only offered a contract by Ballinamallard United of the Northern Irish 2nd tier & Bala Town of the Welsh Premiership. He jumped at the chance to move to Bala and with their current position in the table, it looks like he'll be playing Welsh 2nd division football next year. He's a huge loss for us and will be tough to replace.

The board managed to negotiate another £49,110 for Maton in place of the 40% of next sale clause, taking the total we've received for him up to £164,110. I am more than happy to take this money now as I do not see a tier 10 side selling a player for more than £122,775, which would be the amount needed to match the amount we've made today.

bushhill.thumb.png.ee723dba6d528c86432f453172abc4ab.png      New Year, New Contract

The board have had a sudden change of heart and finally have offered me a contract where I was able to add in both a 20% yearly wage rise and a 20% promotion pay rise too. Prior to this, every contract renewal has come much closer to the end of the season and the board have been a lot more stringent with the clauses (well, they've not let me add any before!) Why is this important? I have been following an unwritten rule and that is to not let any player (or staff) earn more than myself as manager. The longer the save goes on and (hopefully) the higher we get up the pyramid, the harder that may become. But it's a rule I've been sticking to and with these clauses added, it'll be a lot easier to continue sticking to.

My previous wage was £100pw and our highest other earner is on £90pw. Now I'm on £120pw with a guaranteed 20% pay rise to £144pw next season (and £168pw if we manage to get promoted).

After such a worrying crash of our Junior Coaching, it was great to see that the game restored our status from 1 back up to 14 without me having to go to the board to make any requests. In fact, I haven't been allowed to go into the boardroom to ask for any improvements since the crash. SO it was a huge relief that not only the board let me back in to dicsuss further improvements, but even more so that they have agreed to it! We should be on our way to Youth Recruitment = 1 (most local) and Junior Coaching = 17 (one away from max!) Hopefully these new improvements have happened in time to affect our next intake.

We've been battling to every win, but we're on a great run in the league! The Cup game is the only loss we've suffered in 10 games now and no matter how marginal each victory is, they're all worth 3 points, and we're back up into promotion contention with 9 games to go.

More Improvements

At the end of Feb, the board have agreed to push our Youth Level up for the first time. This requires our Youth Facilities to also be improved for a first time. Very happy to get both at once!!! Alexis Maton's departure and the sale of his clause helped pay for this.

2024 (12 of 16)
2025 (9 of 16)
2026 (8 of 16)

2030 (9 of 16)

This year's intake is amazing, but it's been the hardest one to deal with yet. We've had to release the two top prospects, including a driven Kosovan called Zeqiri who is from London (so close). I suspect both him & Johnson from Benburb will find other clubs easily and it'll be interesting to see how far they'll go.

I'm surprised at the lower number of players from Enfield this year. This could be down to the glitch we faced or could be random chance. Hopefully next year we'll be back to seeing at least 10x local players.

Not the best intake, only seven players from Enfield AND we've had to release the two best players. Oof.

I gambled in starting new man Jacobs at AMC from the start and he scored and put in a 7.6 rating! A huge result against Uxbridge puts us in the drivers seat going into the final day of the season where we just need to match their result to finish in the playoffs. We have to go away to 7th, and Uxbridge are at home to 16th.
