When you play in a 4-2-3-1, do you use two DMs, two CMs or one of each?

Currently looking to improve this tactic in FM12.

I'm wondering what should be the best positioning for the double pivot there, since the midfielders in my squad are proficient at playing both in the DM and CM positions.

If it's FM12 then definitely use two CMs. In FM23 and FM24 4-2-3-1 works so much better though.

With the introduction of positional play, using an Anchor beside a Volante-Su is a great way of defending in a 4231 but attacking with a single pivot.
