Have I missed something? The First Division in Holland works on a stage system where every 6 games the leader at that point makes the playoffs, then another 6 games, etc. If the team at the top has already qualified then 2nd would make it, and on and on. You can finish dead last and qualify for the playoffs, for instance if you say won the first 6 games of the season, then lost the rest, you would still be in the playoffs cause you won the 1st period.
