Liverpool @ Anfield, Liverpool– English Premier League

Cudicini – Gallas, Yobo, Terry – Babayaro, Veron (J.Cole), Geremi, Gronkjaer – Duff – Olisadebe, Mpenza

Liverpool 1 – 0 Chelsea

Chelsea came out with an attacking outfit at Anfield but didn’t claim any points after a late header by reds captain Hyppia separated the teams. Chelsea were dominant however they couldn’t convert it to the scoreline as Liverpool absorbed the pressure and gave Chelsea their first defeat of the season.

Today we added Geremi to our injured list after he tore groin, doesn’t look as bad as Mutu’s so he could be back in a month or so. It’s only September and we have already had more injuries than all of last season! So far they have not hurt us, but if they continue then late in season it could be more damaging.

Cardiff City @ Ninian Park, Cardiff – English Premier League

Cudicini – Gallas, Yobo, Terry – Babayaro, Makelele, Veron, Gronkjaer (Gudjohnsen) – Duff – Olisadebe, Jose Mari

Cardiff 0 – 1 Chelsea

Olisadebe 60

In a tough game of very few chances Chelsea came away with a hard earned away victory at Ninian Park. On the hour mark Jose Mari made a good run wide on the right before crossing into the box where Olisadebe volleyed home, opening his Premier League account this season after an interrupted first couple of months. Cardiff showed a lot of spirit but the class of Chelsea and in particular Veron and Makelele in the middle of the park was too much to handle in the end as Olisadebe took his only real chance for the match to settle the scoreline.

Panathinaikos @ Apostolos Nikolaidis, Athens – European Champions Cup Group H

Cudicini – Gallas, Yobo, Terry – Babayaro, Veron, Makelele, Malbranque (Gronkjaer) – Duff – Gudjohnsen, Olisadebe (Lampard)

PAO 2 – 1 Chelsea

Duff 88

Panathinaikos put a minor dent in Chelsea’s Champions Cup ambitions this season with a good home victory, set up by an outstanding first half of football. Konstantinou was too much to handle for Chelsea usually stingy defence and he headed PAO into the lead after only 8 minutes, half an hour later he got behind the defence and delightfully chipped Cudicini from 30 yards. Duff pulled back a late consolation goal for Chelsea after a lapse in the PAO defence, Duff stole through and powered the ball past the keeper. Chelsea striker Olisadebe struggled to impact against his former club as he was well marked, he left the game late with a back complaint.

(ECC Group H Boavista 0 – 2 Roma)

It looks like we have a bit of fight on hands now in Champions Cup following defeat in Athens, on a positive note it looks like Olisadebe will be fine after the physio worked on his back problem today. We play PAO again in two weeks at home so we must take all points in that game!

Manchester United @ Stamford Bridge, London – English Premier League

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Duff, Makelele (J.Cole), Veron, Gronkjaer (Jose Mari) – Olisadebe, Gudjohnsen

Chelsea 2 – 0 Man Utd

Gudjohnsen 41, 50

Chelsea’s wandering Icelandic star Eidur Gudjohnsen finally found some form this season, and he couldn’t have timed it better scoring a goal either side of half time against Man U. Chelsea were in fine form totally outplaying United over the full 90 minutes, in an allround team performance Duff and Gudjohnsen starred for Chelsea. On 41 minutes Olisadebe flicked a Yobo long ball into Gudjohnsen’s path and he beat Barthez from the edge of the area to make it 1-0. Then on 50 minutes following good work by Babayaro, Duff crossed for Gudjohnsen to smash home from close range.

At the end of September Mr Roman is very happy with way things are travelling, following win over Man U I tell players how proud I am to be leading such a great group of players. I especially single out Gronkjaer’s performance in winning Player of Month award, considering I didn’t expect him to be starting much this season. Blackburn and Newcastle have started very well in EPL but I not too worried just yet, they will both slip up eventually.

Looks like Babayaro will miss a couple of weeks with a calf injury, he pulled up sore after training and the physio is going to be very cautious as it has been a problem for Celestine in the past. This will give Wayne Bridge a chance to claim back his left-back spot, it has been a hotly contested position over last year or so. I speak to Roman today as I have a request for him, my wife Tatiana is depressed with English life and is going back to house in Moscow, I ask Roman that he make sure she is looked after by right people in Russia and her family also. Roman assures me that all will be fine, he actually thought it might be good idea as visa problem’s have resurfaced again, this time in relation to signing of Dmitri Parfenov last season. Apparently Dmitri who holds a Ukraine passport is under investigation by UEFA over the legality of his big move to Chelsea, this follows claim from his former club Spartak Moscow that they have not received any of 2m transfer fee. I think this matter will be around for a while.

West Bromwich Albion @ The Hawthorns, West Bromwich – English Premier League

Cudicini – Gallas, Yobo, Terry (Bridge), Melchiot – Duff (Jose Mari), Makelele, Veron, Gronkjaer – Gudjohnsen, Olisadebe (Mpenza)

WBA 0 – 1 Chelsea

Olisadebe 9 pen

Jesper Gronkjaer continued his great form for Chelsea as he led them to a 1-0 victory away to West Brom. Gronkjaer was damaging down both flanks and single handedly created many chances for the strikers. The only goal of the game however came when Wallwork tugged Olisadebe’s shirt in the area on 9 minutes and the referee was left with no choice but to award a penalty, Olisadebe successfully converted. West Brom fought back but could not beat Cudicini in the Chelsea goal, late in the game Dichio was sent-off after venting out his frustrations on Mpenza.

Bolton @ Stamford Bridge, London – English Premier League

Cudicini – Bridge, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Gronkjaer (Duff), J.Cole (Jose Mari), Makelele, Etxeberria – Mpenza, Olisadebe

Chelsea 4 – 0 Bolton

Olisadebe 5, 37, 44

Jose Mari 80

Chelsea demolished Bolton at Stamford Bridge with Olisadebe claiming a first half hat-trick. Bolton could do nothing in response to Chelsea’s attacking options with Etxeberria especially dangerous in his first game back from injury. Olisadebe opened the scoring on 5 minutes with a close range header from Etxeberria’s cross, then on 37 minutes he made it 2 from the spot after Joe Cole was fouled, the hat-trick was completed in the 44th minute with a powerful header from Bridges deep corner. Jose Mari finished the scoring late in the match by tapping in after Duff’s great work on the left.

Panathinaikos @ Stamford Bridge, London – European Champions Cup Group H

Cudicini – Bridge, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Duff, Veron, Makelele (Etxeberria), Gronkjaer (C.Cole) – Gudjohnsen, Olisadebe (Mpenza)

Chelsea 2 – 1 PAO

Duff 80

C.Cole 88

Panathinaikos almost caused a major upset after they outplayed Chelsea for 80 minutes before the blues were shocked into action, eventually pulling off a stunning home victory. Late in an intense first half Manikas headed PAO into the lead and it looked like they could hold on for a famous victory, but with 15 minutes left Chelsea introduced youngster Carlton Cole. Playing with 3 strikers now and a couple of forward wingers Chelsea threw everything forward, 80 minutes in Mpenza flicked on a long ball and Duff finished in devastating fashion. Finally on 88 minutes Etxeberria took the ball in from the right, with a low cross to Carlton Cole who turned and finished from 12 yards. Chelsea had dramatically snatched victory and subsequently almost certainly ensured advancement to the 2nd round.

Chelsea 5 – 0 Tottenham

Olisadebe 4, 29, 79, 88

Joe Cole 24

Emmanuel Olisadebe bounced back from another poor performance against his former club PAO, with 4 goals against spurs in a big day out. Once again Chelsea dominated at home against Premier League opposition as they put 5 past Tottenham. Olisadebe scored 2 goals in each half and was well provided by Jose Mari and Veron in the midfield, Joe Cole also scored from a Veron corner half an hour into the match. An unlucky spurs came up against an unstoppable Chelsea side running high on confidence.

AS Roma @ Olimpico, Rome – European Champions Cup Group H

Cudicini – Bridge, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Duff (Babayaro), Veron (J.Cole), Makelele, Gronkjaer (Etxeberria) – Olisadebe, C.Cole

Roma 0 – 3 Chelsea

Olisadebe 17, 45

C.Cole 50

Roma has all but thrown away it’s chances of advancing to the 2nd round of the Champions Cup following a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea. Chelsea’s pacey strikeforce of Olisadebe and Carlton Cole caused troubles all day to the aging Roma defence, on 17 minutes Carlton Cole broke through the defence and set up Olisadebe for a simple finish to make it 1-0. Then on the stroke of half time the exact same thing happened and once again Olisadebe made no mistake, both sides had had first half chances but Chelsea were clinical in their finishing. Early in the second half Carlton Cole scored one for himself ,Olisadebe’s shot was partially saved however when the ball stopped dead on the goal line the 20yr old Cole was on hand to finish the simplest of goals.

(ECC Group H Boavista 0 – 1 PAO)

ECC Group H (5 of 6 played) – CHELSEA 12, Panathinaikos 9, Roma 7, Boavista 1

After confirming our qualification for 2nd round of Champions Cup Mr Roman expressed his delight in the way we played our football against Roma. As we near the mid-season transfer window I was hoping to have announced the signing of Man Utd’s young American keeper Tim Howard, however despite constant appeals it looks like a work permit will be a stumbling block. I will hopefully announce couple more signings during the upcoming transfer period despite this setback. Have sent scouts far and wide to hopefully add more depth to our defensive unit.

November

This month we find out who we play in next round of Champion Cup, it looks like all teams will be strong so probably no easy matches from here in. Roman wants Champions Cup soon and he will do whatever I need to help win cup, after scouting in Spain and South America there might be a couple of Argentines who we are trying to sign, but we will see what happens in couple of months.

Birmingham @ St Andrews, Birmingham – English Premier League

Cudicini – Bridge, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Gronkjaer (Mpenza), J.Cole, (Jose Mari), Makelele (Etxeberria), Duff – Gudjohnsen, C.Cole

Birmingham 2 – 1 Chelsea

Gronkjaer 15

Chelsea took the lead early at St Andrews through Gronkjaer’s strike from wide on the left, however it was to be the only goal for Chelsea on a day of missed opportunities. Figueroa struck back for Birmingham on 35 minutes with a header looping over Cudicini, then on 81 minutes Stern John gave Birmingham all 3 points after a scrambled goal from an uncleared corner. Birmingham deserved this victory after they really took their game to Chelsea, who struggled to handle the attacking pressure applied by Figueroa and company.

Coventry City @ Stamford Bridge, London – English League Cup 3rd Round

Sereni – Bridge, Desailly, Melchiot, Mills – Jose Mari, J.Cole (Lampard), Geremi (Zenden), Etxeberria – Mpenza, C.Cole (Smith)

Chelsea 1 – 1 Coventry (1-1 AET 4-3 pens)

Mpenza 64

Chelsea fielded a reserves line up against Coventry in this League Cup fixture, Coventry managed to force the match to penalties and probably should have won the tie in regular time. On 63 minutes McSheffrey gave Coventry a deserved lead with a fast counter-attack, however the sky blues did not get players behind the ball quick enough as Chelsea attacked immediately and scored through Mpenza’s header within a minute from an Etxeberria cross. The match then faded into nothingness as neither side could create any real opportunities for the remainder of the 90 minutes or the 30 minutes of extra time, on to penalties. Chelsea lead early in the shoot-out, up 3-1 but then Coventry scored, Melchiot missed and Coventry scored to draw level, Desailly crashed his home and then Adebola missed, and Chelsea were through.

Blackburn @ Ewood Park, Blackburn – English Premier League

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Duff, Veron, Geremi, Gronkjaer (Etxeberria) – Gudjohnsen (Jose Mari), Olisadebe

Blackburn 0 – 4 Chelsea

Duff 31

Olisadebe 34, 70

Gronkjaer 37

Chelsea destroyed Blackburn in a period of 6 minutes during the first half when 3 goals were scored ending the match as a competition. First on 31 minutes Olisadebe’s header was saved into the path of Duff who easily finished from 5 yards, then Geremi’s free-kick was powerfully headed home by Olisadebe, finally on 37 minutes Gronkjaer’s free-kick was deflected past Friedel by the defensive wall, 3-0. Olisadebe scored a second in the 70th minute when he found space in the box to turn and guide the ball inside the far post after nice work by Duff down the left. For a match which ended with such a one sided scoreline both sides had chances, however Chelsea made the most of the freedom offered by Blackburn.

Boavista @ Stamford Bridge, London – European Champions Cup Group H

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry, Gallas (Melchiot), Yobo – Duff, J.Cole (Bridge), Lampard, Etxeberria – Gudjohnsen (C.Cole), Mpenza

Chelsea 3 – 0 Boavista

Yobo 12

Lampard 25

Gudjohnsen 28

Chelsea confirmed that they would go through to the Champions Cup final 16 as the winners in group H after a 3-0 win over win-less Boavista. Yobo scored a stunning goal after 12 minutes when Joe Cole chipped the ball into the box for Yobo to volley into the roof of the net, Lampard and Gudjohnsen added to the scoreline in the first half. Chelsea protected players in the second half as they comfortably held a three goal cushion.

Champions Cup 2nd Round

All four English representatives are through to the final 16 of the Champions Cup, Spain also boasts four teams with Italy three, Holland two and one each from Germany, Greece and Turkey.

ECC 2nd Round Draw

Arsenal v Newcastle

Deportivo v Ajax

Juventus v Milan

Bayern v Real Madrid

PAO v Fenerbahce

PSV v Liverpool

Inter v Barcelona

Valencia v CHELSEA

Valencia will be tough in 2nd round of Champion Cup, but looking at draw all matches look very hard as all teams in final 16 are high quality. We have a couple of months before Champions Cup starts up again, it is important now to make sure that best team is available when competition starts again as this is most important competition of season according to Roman. He says league is good but he wants Champions Cup trophy in cabinet this season.

Charlton @ Stamford Bridge, London – English Premier League

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Duff (Jose Mari), J.Cole (Veron), Lampard, Gronkjaer – Gudjohnsen (Mutu), Olisadebe

Chelsea 0 – 0 Charlton

A very defensive Charlton side held Chelsea to a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge today. Inspired by enigmatic keeper Dean Kiely, Charlton were determined not to conceed a goal and hopefully hit Chelsea on the counter attack. Mutu returned from long term injury for Chelsea in the second half, however a near full strength lineup couldn’t break down Charlton’s organised defence.

Oldham @ Boundary Park, Oldham – English League Cup 4th Round

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Duff (Bridge), J.Cole, Veron (Lampard), Gronkjaer (Etxeberria) – Mutu, Olisadebe

Oldham 0 – 4 Chelsea

Mutu 10, 56

Olisadebe 35 pen

Terry 62

Easy, too easy for a solid Chelsea team, as they took apart Oldham in a mismatch of ability. However the risk Chelsea took by playing a near full strength side was portrayed when Gronkjaer was forced off the field with what looked like a serious shoulder injury. Mutu claimed a brace, while Olisadebe scored from the spot after Duff was fouled, finally Terry forced home a header just past the hour mark. Comfortable win for Chelsea, but will it come at a cost.

Gronkjaer out of action

Chelsea’s outstanding winger Jesper Gronkjaer will miss close to a month of football after breaking his collarbone in action against Oldham on Wednesday. Gronkjaer will hope this is only a minor hiccup since he has been in career best form this season.

Southampton @ St Mary’s Stadium, Southampton – English Premier League

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Duff, J.Cole (Lampard), Etxeberria, Jose Mari – Mutu (Geremi), Olisadebe

Southampton 0 – 1 Chelsea

Olisadebe 28

Surprise premiership high fliers Southampton who started this fixture in 4th spot, came crashing down after a dour 1-0 defeat at the hands of last season’s champions Chelsea. The telling goal came on 28 minutes when Jose Mari flicked on a long ball, playing through Olisadebe who rounded Niemi to score into an empty net. Southampton proved they deserve to be battling with the likes of Chelsea by giving nothing away, and they were unlucky not to equalise late in the game with Phillips thwarted by Cudicini in the dying seconds.

December ‘03

We have a tough run of away matches this month, some good practice though for upcoming Europe fixtures where away games are so important. I start resting players through busy Summer period so that important players will be fresh come late season and more important games. I have spoken to Roman recently, am very happy with depth of squad this season so far all injuries have been covered and players are all fully fit, this time last season players already requesting rests to keep fit.

West Ham @ Upton Park, London – English Premier League

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Duff, J.Cole (Lampard), Veron, Etxeberria (Smith) – Mutu, Gudjohnsen

West Ham 0 – 1 Chelsea

Mutu 83

Chelsea ran into an in form Nigel Martyn at Upton Park, but they crawled out the other side with a deserved 1-0 away victory. The veteran keeper who moved from relegated Leeds in the summer put in a vintage performance – however he alone could not stop this Chelsea team. Mutu finally broke the deadlock on 83 minutes when Gudjohnsen’s flick-on put him one on one with Martyn, where he calmly slotted the ball under the oncoming keeper.

Arsenal @ Highbury, London – English Premier League

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Duff, Veron, Geremi (J.Cole), Mutu – Olisadebe, Jose Mari (Etxeberria)

Arsenal 2 – 1 Chelsea

Duff 26

Arsenal continued their climb up the premiership ladder with a hard hitting 2-1 victory over Chelsea. Arsenal hit early though Vieira on 5 minutes and then Kanu 2 minutes later, the Nigerian the architect of both strikes. Duff pulled a goal back for Chelsea on 26 minutes with a low drive from the left of the area, however despite constant pressure Chelsea could not equalise as Arsenal held on for a crucial victory. Duff was brilliant for Chelsea and almost single handedly got the blues back into the match.

Manchester City @ City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester – English Premier League

Cudicini – Bridge (Babayaro), Melchiot, Yobo, Mills – Duff, J.Cole (Etxeberria), Geremi, Jose Mari (Smith) – Mpenza, Mutu

Man City 0 – 1 Chelsea

Mutu 66

Chelsea played their 4th consecutive away Premier League match and recorded a solid 1-0 away victory. Emile Mpenza was a powerhouse up front in the absence of Olisadebe (rested) however bad finishing ruined what should have been a more memorable game for the young Belgian. Adrian Mutu headed the winning goal on 66 minutes from a Duff cross after sustained pressure by Chelsea on the City goal. Late in the game Mettomo was sent-off for City after tangling with Smith.

Manchester United @ Old Trafford, Manchester – English League Cup Quarter Final

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Duff, J.Cole, Veron (Etxeberria), Mutu – Mpenza, Olisadebe

Man Utd 4 – 1 Chelsea

Olisadebe 15 pen

Man Utd’s season may have been spurred into action following a devastating performance against Chelsea in the League Cup Quarter Final. Mpenza was fouled by Keane and Olisadebe converted to give Chelsea the lead on 14 minutes, as it turned out this fired up Utd and they were devastating from the quarter hour mark. Van Nistelrooy equalised on 22 minutes and then gave Utd the lead just before half time, his explosive acceleration too much for Terry on both occasions. Keane atoned for his mistimed tackled on 48 minutes smashing Man U into a 3-1 lead, finally Pizarro ended the comeback in the 87th minute pouncing on a loose ball in the area and coolly finishing.

I not too fussed with losing in League Cup, it is least important of all competitions and gives more time to schedule games and rest through middle of season.

Newcastle United @ Stamford Bridge, London – English Premier League

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Duff, Veron, Etxeberria – Mutu – Gudjohnsen (Mpenza), Olisadebe

Chelsea 3 – 1 Newcastle

Olisadebe 14

Etxeberria 66

Duff 71

It was 1st versus 2nd and the game lived up to expectations with a cracking 4 goal free flowing, attacking contest. Chelsea came out on top and reclaimed top spot in the league from Louis Van Gaal’s Newcastle side. Olisadebe gave Chelsea a first half lead following Mutu’s delightful through ball, but it was after half time that the game fired up. To start with a Yobo foul gave Edu the chance to equalise for Newcastle – and he missed everything, soon after the miss Veron played in Etxeberria and the Spaniard hit a rasping 35 yard drive past Given to widen the margin. Newcastle fought back and were pressuring Chelsea when Duff pounced on a poor pass in the Newcastle half and proceeded to chip the stranded Given from 35 yards, 3-0 Chelsea. Jenas pulled back a late consolation with a powerful shot from a tight angle but unfortunately that was all Newcastle had left in the tank.

This is more like it, after defeat at Highbury upsetting league run it is important to get back on top of good teams like Newcastle. Etxeberria finally appears to be finding his feet in English game, is good to see as I invested a lot of Roman’s money in him.

Wolverhampton Wanderers @ Stamford Bridge, London – English Premier League

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Duff, Veron (J.Cole), Etxeberria, Mutu (Jose Mari) – Mpenza (Gronkjaer), Olisadebe

Chelsea 1 – 0 Wolves

Olisadebe 74

Wolves put up the defences against Chelsea today and they held out for 73 minutes before Olisadebe finally gave Chelsea the goal they desired. It was a hard fought match and Wolves were obviously determined to get one point out of it but it wasn’t to be. Following some fine work by Duff, dribbling to the by-line and then cutting the ball back, Olisadebe found enough space to turn and fire the ball inside the far post past the resilient Murray in goals for Wolves.

January ‘04

At mid-season mark we finally go to top of Premier League for first time this season, very tight at top of table with Newcastle finally losing a few points after very good start to Van Gaal’s reign. The next month will be crucial to start sorting out the top of the premiership.

Rotherham @ Stamford Bridge, London – FA Cup 3rd Round

Sereni – Bridge (Petit), Melchiot, Parfenov, Johnson – Zenden, Lampard, Makelele, Malbranque (Forssell) – Smith (C.Cole), Jose Mari

Chelsea 1 – 1 Rotherham

Jose Mari 50

Rotherham almost upset England’s top club as they held Chelsea to a 1-1 in front of a stunned Stamford Bridge crowd in the FA Cup 3rd Round tie. Chelsea had troubles on 4 minutes when Lampard was sent-off for a terrible two-footed tackle, and there were no arguments from the Chelsea bunker. Byfield gave Rotherham the unlikely lead with a perfect chip on 11 minutes, Chelsea keeper Sereni only able to watch the ball sail over his head into the net. At half time it looked ominous for the 10 men of Chelsea, but when Jose Mari scored with a powerful header from Parfenov’s cross on 50 minutes everyone at the ground assumed that Chelsea would now run over Rotherham. It wasn’t to be though and Rotherham were unlucky not to find a winner in the dying minutes.

Portsmouth @ Fratton Park, Portsmouth – English Premier League

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Gronkjaer, J.Cole, Etxeberria, Malbranque (Gudjohnsen) – Olisadebe, Mutu

Portsmouth 0 – 0 Chelsea

There aren’t many 0-0 draws in the Premier League these days but this was a classic old 0-0. Both sides had few chances, although Gudjohnsen it must be said wasted 3 great chances which proved costly in the end. The Fratton Park faithful cheered the final whistle signifying what they thought of the 0-0 scoreline, but it really was a disappointing Chelsea side which headed back to London.

Liverpool @ Stamford Bridge, London – English Premier League

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Duff, Veron (J.Cole), Etxeberria, Gronkjaer (Mpenza) – Olisadebe, Mutu

Chelsea 2 – 0 Liverpool

Olisadebe 82

Mpenza 86

After Chelsea’s disappointing effort against Portsmouth and for 80 minutes it looked like this match would also end 0-0 as Liverpool were content to absorb and counter. The introduction of Mpenza to partner Olisadebe made all the difference, on 82 minutes Gallas’ long ball was nodded down by Mpenza and Olisadebe struck it home from just 12 yards. Then on 86 minutes Etxeberria made a great run down the right before crossing for Mpenza to strongly head down into the bottom corner of the net. Chelsea had hit hard and hit fast to finally dispense of Liverpool, but good teams play out the full 90 minutes and this Chelsea team is good.

Excellent effort against Liverpool, last time we play them they beat us with a late goal so this time we got them back with two late goals. Team is starting to play consistently good football regardless of which eleven players I put on pitch each match. Mpenza is really starting to get used to our style of play. Now if I can get him and Olisadebe playing well at the same time they will be formidable strike force.

Rotherham @ Millmoor, Rotherham – FA Cup 3rd Round Replay

Cudicini – Bridge, Desailly, Melchiot, Parfenov – Gronkjaer, J.Cole, Lampard (Petit), Malbranque (Etxeberria) – Mpenza, Gudjohnsen (C.Cole)

Rotherham 0 – 3 Chelsea

Gudjohnsen 33

Mpenza 40

Melchiot 51

Following the drama of the first game between Rotherham and Chelsea this match at Millmoor promised much, but Chelsea soon ensured they wouldn’t be caught out again. Gudjohnsen scored Chelsea’s first with a tap in after Mpenza’s strong header was partially stopped, Mpenza made it two before the half with a powerful finish after being played in by Parfenov. Melchiot ended the scoring in the second half with a solid header from Bridge’s corner. Rotherham were valiant but simply outplayed this time.

Middlesborough @ Stamford Bridge, London – English Premier League

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry, Gallas (Melchiot), Yobo – Gronkjaer, J.Cole (Geremi), Etxeberria (Jose Mari), Duff – Mpenza, Mutu

Chelsea 3 – 0 Middlesborough

Etxeberria 17

Mpenza 67

Mutu 73

Chelsea scored an easy 3-0 win over Middlesborough as their back-to-back Premier League challenge begins to mount. Boro were never really in the match and after 17 minutes Etxeberria turned his man on the right edge of the area before firing the ball in off the far post with what was a stunning strike. In the second half Yobo’s low cross was glanced past the keeper by Mpenza to make it two, then Mutu completed the scoring with a simple finish following Mpenza’s downward header.

Aston Villa @ Villa Park, Birmingham – English Premier League

Cudicini – Bridge, Terry, Gallas, Melchiot – Duff, Veron, Etxeberria (Mutu), Gronkjaer (Jose Mari) – Mpenza, Olisadebe

Aston Villa 0 – 3 Chelsea

Olisadebe 19, 58

Jose Mari 69

At Villa Park today Chelsea put on a clinic as they took apart Villa 3-0. Villa were as disappointing as Chelsea were good, and on 19 minutes Olisadebe side footed home a great Duff cross. In the second half Olisadebe scored his second following a defence splitting flick-on by Mpenza, and Jose Mari sealed the result heading home a Mutu corner. This win iced a run of 8 games now undefeated for Chelsea since that defeat at Arsenal.

Chelsea welcomes Argentines

Chelsea today finally unveiled new signings Marcelo Delgado and Sebastian Mendez to the faithful supporters. Delgado joins from Boca Juniors for 3.4m, the tricky forward is good on both sides of the pitch and his pace is likely to trouble many defences, at 30 he is an experienced campaigner with 17 caps for Argentina and he looks to have a few years left in him yet. Sebastian Mendez joins from Celta Vigo for 9m, a very quick centre back Mendez will be expected to push for a starting place in the Chelsea defence, and at 26 his best years are certainly ahead of him.

Smith unhappy at Chelsea

Former England starlet Alan Smith appears to be on the way out at Chelsea, the club he has only played a handful of first team games for after signing 6 months ago. Following this season's arrival of fellow forwards Mpenza, Jose Mari and now Delgado, Smith has found himself consistently playing reserves football and this week publicly questioned his role at the football club. Chelsea boss Vlad Shiagichevskiy denies that Smith is unwanted, claiming that there is still a role for him to play with the club for this season at the very least. With speculation a couple of Italian clubs are interested in his services, Smith could soon be on the move again come Summer.

After Smith go to media about his problems with me I fear that only solution is to organise trade for young Alan, Milan have expressed some interest so I’ll be on the phone straight away. The Smith situation came to head when Marcelo Delgado started training with squad last week, Smith did not shake Delgado’s hand when I introduced him to team and he just walked straight off training track. Good friend John Terry tried talking to him but Smith had decided he’d had enough of reserves football. Smith then went to media searching for support to his claim for first team football, but even public agreed with me, then I think he knew that career at Chelsea was now over.

With all that drama out of way I can now talk about Delgado and Mendez, Smith is now past unfortunatetly, these guys are future. Delgado is quick striker who at 30 is playing for a club outside his home country Argentina for first time in career, I expect he will play a part in our European campaign off the bench as he is dynamic player and unknown to most other clubs. Mendez is highly regarded 26yr old centre back who is quite pacey, he’s been playing in Spain with Celta Vigo, originally from Velez Sarsfield in Argentina I think in time he will challenge Gallas for his spot in back four.

February ‘04

My main focus for Chelsea this season is to become Champions of Europe, the competition starts up again this month when the 2nd round kicks off. We are playing Valencia in Spain first up and I am hoping to settle the side by time this match comes around. I have becoming inpatient with Mutu and Mpenza as they are playing quite well but not putting goals in net, I need strikers who score goals like Olisadebe is doing.

Leicester @ Walkers Stadium, Leicester – English Premier League

Cudicini – Bridge, Gallas, Mendez, Melchiot – Gronkjaer, Veron, Etxeberria, Delgado (Jose Mari) – Mpenza (J.Cole), Olisadebe

Leicester 0 – 0 Chelsea

Sebastian Mendez started his Chelsea career dramatically when he was sent-off after only 44 minutes at Leicester, Mendez was adjudged to have pulled down Dickov who was clean through on goal, leaving the referee with no choice but to send the defender to the showers. Leicester took control of the match and were unlucky not to gain more than a point against a Chelsea outfit not used to defending quite so much, who were forced to get men behind the ball for the remainder of the match.

Manchester United @ Old Trafford, Manchester – FA Cup 4th Round

Cudicini – Bridge, Terry, Gallas (Melchiot), Mills – Duff, J.Cole, Etxeberria, Gronkjaer – Olisadebe, Mutu

Man Utd 1 – 0 Chelsea

In one of the biggest 4th Round FA Cup ties for a number of years Man Utd defeated Chelsea in cup competition for the second time this season. It was a very tight game with few chances for either side, but United claimed the win late in injury time thanks to a Cristiano Ronaldo close range header much to the dismay of Chelsea’s defence who had fought so hard for a draw – but it wasn’t to be.

We are now out of both domestic cup competitions and being honest I don’t really care much anyhow, we now have less distractions for European competition. Mr Roman he came to me today, he say that I must stop calling European Champions League, Champion Cup. But on all documents I receive it say Champions Cup so I thought that was what I am calling it, apparently is officially Champions Cup since structure of tournament changed but everyone calls it Champions League – I will try. Roman thinks I sound stupid when I say Champion Cup at press conference, especially worse with my bad English. Champions League, Champions League, okay I think I try to remember now.

Cardiff City @ Stamford Bridge, London – English Premier League

Cudicini – Bridge, Terry, Mendez, Mills – Duff (Gronkjaer), J.Cole (Jose Mari), Geremi, Delgado – Olisadebe, Mutu (Mpenza)

Chelsea 2 – 0 Cardiff

Olisadebe 15 pen

Duff 50

Cardiff caused Chelsea very few problems today at Stamford Bridge as they went down 2-0 to the reigning Premier League title holders who look set to reclaim their title if current form is anything to go by. Delgado made his first meaningful contribution to Chelsea’s season when he was hacked down by Croft in the area, Olisadebe doesn’t make mistakes from the spot, 1-0 to Chelsea. Early in the second half Duff capped a great game with an amazing solo effort, taking the ball left of the area Duff cut between two players before turning a third and then casually curling the ball into the far corner of the goal – unstoppable.

West Bromwich Albion @ Stamford Bridge, London – English Premier League

Cudicini – Bridge, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Gronkjaer (Jose Mari), J.Cole, Geremi, Delgado – Olisadebe, Mutu (Etxeberria)

Chelsea 4 – 0 WBA

Olisadebe 2, 30

Joe Cole 59

Gallas 62

West Brom came up against a side in such good current form that they can afford to rest arguably their most creative players in Veron and Duff, yet still run out 4-0 victors without raising a sweat. Olisadebe set Chelsea running with two first half strikes, first beating the keeper easily after Gronkjaer played him in, then taking the ball on the edge of the area with back to goal and turning and shooting in the one motion giving the West Brom keeper no chance. In the second half Joe Cole made it three with a cracking 30 yard drive which went in off the cross bar, and completing the scoring Gallas powered home a Bridge corner on the hour mark.

Tottenham @ White Hart Lane, London – English Premier League

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry (Melchiot), Mendez, Mills – Duff (Jose Mari), Veron (Etxeberria), Geremi, Mutu – Mpenza, Delgado

Tottenham 2 – 3 Chelsea

Mpenza 3

Duff 22

Terry 50

Dramatically Glenn Hoddle was relieved of his managerial status with Tottenham today following a spirited 3-2 defeat at the hands of Chelsea. At the press conference following the match Hoddle explained that following a discussion with chairman Daniel Levy he would not manage the side for the remaining matches of the season as the club wishes to immediately seek a new face to take charge of Tottenham. Goals by Mpenza and Duff had Tottenham in trouble on 22 minutes, but they fought back well to level the match by half time through two fine Postiga strikes. Early in the second half Terry headed home what was to be the winning goal from a Babayaro corner, and that was the end for Hoddle.

Houllier claims League Cup

Gerard Houllier’s Liverpool have won the English League Cup with a 1-0 victory over a slumping Man Utd side which can do nothing right at present. El-Hadji Diouf scored the decider with a close range finish after Carragher’s free-kick.

For such big game against Valencia away I have picked Mutu and Olisadebe up front, and have recalled experienced midfielders Veron and Geremi who have been in good recent form. My stable defensive unit is unchanged as usual for big games.

Valencia @ Mestalla, Valencia – European Champions League 2nd Round 1st Leg

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Duff, Veron (J.Cole), Geremi, Gronkjaer – Mutu (Mpenza), Olisadebe

Valencia 1 – 0 Chelsea

Valencia will take a one goal lead to Stamford Bridge next month after upsetting a highly rated Chelsea team at the Mestalla. In a surpisingly open first half of football both sides had good chances, and they both should certainly have hit the net at least once. It was all out attack as first Mutu couldn’t convert from just 6 yards out for Chelsea and then Carew wasted two great opportunities, one on one with Cudicini and on both occasions he blasted over the bar. Chelsea took control of the match in the second half, the midfield of Veron and Duff in particular totally dominated the play however on two occasions Olisadebe’s goalbound efforts were splendidly saved by Canizares. In Valencia’s only real attack of the secong half Baraja scored, Rufete’s deep corner on 67 minutes drew out Cudicini and Baraja standing the far post headed powerfully home. Late in the match Olisadebe and then Duff had real chances to equalise but couldn’t take them. Full-time and an important 1-0 home victory to Valencia.

Champions League 2nd Round 1st Leg

Arsenal 1 - 0 Newcastle

Deportivo 1 - 1 Ajax

Juventus 1 - 2 Milan

Bayern 4 - 1 Real Madrid

PAO 2 - 1 Fenerbahce

PSV 0 - 1 Liverpool

Inter 2 - 0 Barcelona

Valencia 1 - 0 Chelsea

Yes it was disappointing to lose to Valencia, but with only a one goal margin I am confident that we will overturn the result when they come to London next month. We absolutely dominated possession but could not take advantage of this situation, oh well.

Birmingham City @ Stamford Bridge, London – English Premier League

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry, Mendez, Yobo – Duff, J.Cole, Geremi, Gronkjaer (Etxeberria) – Mutu, Gudjohnsen (Jose Mari)

Chelsea 2 – 0 Birmingham

Duff 33

Mutu 74

Birmingham did not look the slightest bit intimidated by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the opening minutes of this premiership encounter. Perhaps they should have though, after sustained Birmingham pressure Chelsea took the lead on 33 minutes when Duff pounced on a defensive mistake and drove the ball past a stranded Green in goals for Birmingham. Mutu had a chance to double the score on the hour mark from the spot, but his penalty flew wide of the goal. On 74 minutes though Mutu did claim his goal, Jose Mari’s through ball put him behind the defence and Mutu made no mistake this time. Birmingham were valiant in defeat but realistically they came no closer than any other side has come to defeating Chelsea at home this season.

Premier league is starting to open up at top now, we will be fighting it out for title with Liverpool and maybe Arsenal the rest are too far back. Olisadebe won Player of the Month award which was good for him personally, Manu is a great team player so to receive an individual award would be special to him I think.

Bolton @ Reebok Stadium, Bolton – English Premier League

Cudicini – Babayaro, Melchiot, Mendez, Yobo – Delgado, Etxeberria (Veron), Geremi, Jose Mari – Mpenza, C.Cole (Olisadebe)

Bolton 1 – 0 Chelsea

In a match of missed chances Bolton ran out 1-0 winners against league leaders Chelsea. Kevin Davies gave Bolton the crucial lead on 32 minutes and Chelsea never came back, numerous chances were wasted by the blues forwards and Bolton were then able to sit back and protected their lead well.

Valencia @ Stamford Bridge, London – European Champions League 2nd Round 2nd Leg

Cudicini – Babayaro (Melchiot), Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Duff, Veron, Mutu, Gronkjaer (Jose Mari) – Olisadebe, Mpenza

Chelsea 6 – 0 Valencia

Mpenza 2, 36

Carew OG 12

Olisadebe 45 pen, 53, 79

Chelsea had it all to play for at home to Valencia and down a goal and they certainly came out to play today. The 6-0 final scoreline was harsh on Valencia, but they came out against an inspired Chelsea outfit who were not going to let this opportunity slip. Mpenza gave Chelsea the perfect start in the 2nd minute with a decisive header from Duff’s chip into the near post, on 12 minutes it was 2-0 the goal credited to Carew when Olisadebe’s goal bound header was miscued by the big Norwegian into his own net. By the time the whistle blew for half time the score had blown out to 4-0 for Chelsea, Mpenza clinically finishing from a Mutu through ball on 36 minutes and then when Yobo was fouled in the air by Curro Torres up stepped Olisadebe to bury the penalty with the final kick of the half. Olisadebe wrapped up his hat-trick with 2 second half headers, first on 53 minutes from a Melchiot long throw and then 10 minutes from time when he was left unmarked at a Veron corner. 6-0 final score and Chelsea are on to the quarter finals.

Champions League 2nd Round 1st Leg

Newcastle 4 –1 Arsenal (4-2)

Ajax 2 – 0 Deportivo (3-1)

Milan 0 – 1 Juventus (2-2) Milan on away goals

Real Madrid 0 – 1 Bayern (5-1)

Fenerbahce 0 – 2 PAO (4-1)

Liverpool 1 – 0 PSV (2-1)

Barcelona 1 – 0 Inter (2-0)

Chelsea 6 – 0 Valencia (6-1)

Well I expected us to defeat Valencia at home but I didn’t really expect a 6-0 scoreline, this was by far the best all round performance we have put in all season. Mpenza definitely played best game I’ve seen him play, now hopefully he can take this game and try to keep playing same way. For quarter final round I will take anyone right now, although looking at television of Bayern v Real Madrid match I would prefer not to play Bayern just yet as they in also very good form.

Blackburn Rovers @ Stamford Bridge, London – English Premier League

Cudicini – Gallas, Terry, Mendez, Yobo – Duff, J.Cole, Mutu (Geremi), Gronkjaer (Etxeberria) – Olisadebo (Delgado), Mpenza

Chelsea 2 – 0 Blackburn

Mpenza 31, 46

Belgiam’s star striker Emile Mpenza appears finally to be settling in to life at Chelsea, today following up his 2 goal performance against Valencia with another 2 goals aginst Blackburn. In an evenly contested match Chelsea were always more dangerous and they took the lead on 31 minutes, Duff working wide on the left swung in a very deep cross and Mpenza headed strongly behind Friedel giving the American no chance. Then just a minute into the second half Gallas overlapping with Duff sent a cross to the near post and Mpenza glanced the header across Friedel this time beating him at the far post.

Champions League Quarter Final Draw

Ajax v Newcastle

Milan v Bayern

Liverpool v Panathinaikos

CHELSEA v Inter

Not exactly an easy draw for quarter final of champions league, Inter Milan are very good team after all they beat Bayern in final last year to win cup. But you can’t expect any easy matches in this stage of competition, we have tough three road matches in premier league now with Charlton, Man Utd and Newcastle so we must ensure that our lead does not slip.

Charlton @ The Valley, London – English Premier League

Cudicini – Bridge, Melchiot, Mendez, Mills – Delgado, J.Cole, Geremi (Makelele), Etxeberria – Olisadebe (Gronkjaer), Mpenza (C.Cole)

Charlton 0 – 2 Chelsea

Olisadebe 26

Delgado 76

Charlton have been a surprise packet this season in the Premier League and sitting 7th prior to this fixture they must be eyeing off European competition next season. Today they were given an example of what is required to be consistently successful by the powerhouse that is Chelsea, as the blues left the Valley with 3 points. Olisadebe opened the scoring on 26 minutes when he broke through the Addicks defence and shot past the oncoming Kiely from 30 yards. In the second half Delgado made it secure for Chelsea with his first goal for the club, Etxeberria sent in a curling cross and Delgado’s glancing header was too strong for Kiely.

Man Utd 1 – 0 Chelsea

Manchester United defeated Chelsea for the third time this season at Old Trafford in a tough encounter today. United appear to becoming a bogey side for the all conquering Chelsea side and today it was a dubious 35th minute Pizarro strike that settled the scoring. Pizarro appeared to be in an off-side position when van Nistelrooy’s shot was deflected into the path of the Peruvian who made no mistake finishing from just 5 yards out.

Another loss at Old Trafford. I am getting sick of Man Utd this is the 4th time we played them this season with a 1-3 record. Next week we travel up to Newcastle and we must gain at least a point if not 3 to continue at the top of the league.

Newcastle United @ St James’s Park, Newcastle – English Premier League

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Duff (Etxeberria), J.Cole, Mutu, Gronkjaer (Delgado) – Olisadebe (Jose Mari), Mpenza

Newcastle 2 – 4 Chelsea

Terry 12

Mpenza 26, 89

Jose Mari 53

Newcastle and Chelsea are making a habit of scoring goals against eachother, following on from the 5 goal thriller earlier earlier in the season 6 goals were scored today with Chelsea recording a 4-2 away victory. Chelsea’s young captain John Terry opened the scoring on 12 minutes with a strong header from Gronkjaer’s corner, when Mpenza made it 2 running onto a clearance at the halfway line and beating Woodgate for sheer pace before smashing the ball high past Given - it was too easy for the blues. However just after halftime Shearer pounced on a defensive mistake and ruthlessly finished to pull one back for Newcastle who were back on track and threatening with constant pressure. Chelsea however soon restored the 2 goal cushion just minutes later when Delgado’s solo run into the box was cut-off by Woodgate but the ball fell to Jose Mari who rounded Given to score. On the hour mark Shearer again pulled a goal back tapping in Edu’s header, but Newcastle didn’t threaten again after Chelsea sured up their defence and late in the game Mpenza poked home a loose ball in the Newcastle penalty area to make it 4-2.

Smashing (not Russian word, I learn here!) match against Newcastle, fantastic display of what premiership football should be. For upcoming Inter match we need goals in home leg so I’ll play top strikeforce of Olisadebe and Mpenza with Duff, Veron, Mutu and Gronkjaer in midfield. I am impressed by form of Delgado and Jose Mari, both will play off a very attacking bench.

Internazionale @ Stamford Bridge, London – European Champions League Quarter Final 1st Leg

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Duff (Delgado), Veron, Mutu (J.Cole), Gronkjaer – Olisadebe, Mpenza

Chelsea 2 – 0 Inter

Mpenza 18, 59

Chelsea took control of the quarter final tie against Inter Milan with a 2-0 1st leg victory at Stamford Bridge, in a tight game of few chances Chelsea’s Belgian star Emile Mpenza scored 2 crucial goals that should give them a good chance of progressing to the semi final stage of the Champions League. 18 minutes in Olisadebe played Duff in wide on the left where he pulled the ball back from the byline for Mpenza to drive home from the edge of the area making it 1-0. Cannavaro was winning everything at the back for Inter but on the hour mark Olisadebe found some space and made a great run into the area before squaring the ball for Mpenza and with Toldo stranded Mpenza was left with a simple tap-in. Last years Champions League winners were in trouble and despite a late rally Inter could only manage 2 meaningful efforts on goal, neither of which troubled Cudicini in the Chelsea goal.

Wenger moved on

Arsenal Chairman Peter Hill-Wood today sacked Arsene Wenger from the manager position. Arsenal are hoping some new blood will reinvigorate the club after an indifferent couple of seasons at Highbury, club captain Patrick Vieira says that the players are in support of a change of leadership at Arsenal as he for one has become fed up with Wenger’s intense personality and demanding style of management.

Southampton @ Stamford Bridge, London – English Premier League

Cudicini – Bridge, Terry, Mendez, Yobo – Duff, Veron, Mutu, Gronkjaer (J.Cole) – Delgado, Jose Mari

Chelsea 3 – 0 Southampton

Gronkjaer 6

Svensson og 36

Jose Mari 58

Chelsea’s gamble on Spanish forward Jose Mari from Milan in the summer appears to be paying off if you go by this performance. Jose Mari was in everything and was the clear choice for MOM after a dominant 90 minutes. Gronkjaer put Chelsea in front after only 6 minutes when he cut-in from the right to curl a 35 yard shot past the helpless Niemi. After 36 minutes Yobo’s strong header hammered the crossbar but the unlucky Michael Svensson could only force the ball into his own goal. To cap it off Jose Mari scored with a powerful header from Veron’s 40 yard diagonal ball.

This was important win in league as we cannot afford to drop points and must hope that Liverpool also make some mistakes. I just heard that Man U held Liverpool to a 1-1 draw with Owen missing a penalty in injury time, that makes things a bit easier for us. It was good to see Jose Mari receiving praise from media for today’s performance, I have been very impressed by his attitude since moving from Italy this season – it would not be easy to play so rarely and as a substitute so often but he keeps putting in 100% effort all the time.

Chelsea 3 – 0 West Ham

Joe Cole 7 pen

Jose Mari 56

Mendez 84

Top versus bottom may seem like a mismatch on paper, but with Chelsea fielding a team of fringe players it looked like we might have a close game on our hands. Unfortunately (for West Ham) Chelsea’s weakened side was still dominant in completing an easy 3-0 victory. Joe Cole opened the scoring against his former club from the spot following Brevett’s push on Etxeberria, at half time it could have been more than 1-0 to Chelsea but for some inspirational keeping by Bywater. In the second half Jose Mari doubled the hammers woes with an unstoppable header from Joe Cole’s deep cross, and then Mendez scored his first goal in blue with a near post header from Bridge’s fine corner. Joe Cole had a fantastic match against his former club and after the match his ex-teammates showed no ill feelings were held for the former hammer junior.

Liverpool lost away to West Brom so the league is starting to look safe now. We play Inter in Milan on Wednesday I am confident we can protect 2 goal lead at San Siro as we have full strength squad for trip.

Internazionale @ Giuseppe Meazza, San Siro – European Champions League Quarter Final 2nd Leg

Inter 1 – 2 Chelsea

Mpenza 45

Olisadebe 65

Chelsea knew that any goal away at the San Siro would make life difficult for Inter and Mpenza gave them that relief right on half time after a nervous first half in which they conceded an early goal and could have conceded more. A Materazzi 35 yard free-kick gave Inter a lifeline after only 15 minutes and they continued to press the Chelsea goal, however Milan-born blues keeper Cudicini proved a stumbling block and when Mpenza equalised on half time from a Gronkjaer cross it looked near impossible for Inter. In the second half Inter needed 3 goals to take the tie, so when Olisadebe collected a Chelsea clearance at the halfway line then burnt off Materazzi and rounded Toldo to make it 2-1 it was all over and the champions had been knocked out.

Ranieri takes Gunner reigns

Former Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri has been appointed manager of Arsenal in a shock announcement this morning. Ranieri who in his 2 seasons away from Chelsea has guided Preston North End to 18th in the 1st division last season and this season they currently stand 12th, not exactly the type form guide of a good manager? Ranieri warns not to expect instant success with the gunners however he believes they have the class to challenge for the title next season without a doubt. If he were to have a doubt it may be that his former club – guided by his successor media favourite Vlad Shiagichevskiy appear to only be getting stronger whilst the rest of the premiership falls further behind. I think you should doubt Claudio, it’s a wide world.

Is excellent to be through to semi finals of champions league Mr Roman is very excited he says there will be big reward for me if I can win cup for him. I just hope we don’t have to play Bayern in semi final as they beat us at same stage last season, although we did just beat Inter who thrashed Bayern in last years final – who knows what could happen? On other note I can’t believe Ranieri has been given top job at Arsenal, he couldn’t do a thing with Preston does he really think Arsenal will be easier.

Champions League Semi Final Draw

Ajax v Bayern

Liverpool v CHELSEA

I like semi final against Liverpool, we have good records against reds in premier league. I’m very much already looking forward to first leg.

Manchester City @ Stamford Bridge, London – English Premier League

Cudicini – Bridge, Gallas, Terry, Melchiot – Gronkjaer, Veron (Delgado), J.Cole, Etxeberria – Olisadebe (Mutu), Jose Mari

Chelsea 3 – 0 Man City

Jose Mari 49

Gallas 69

Joe Cole 88

Predictably Chelsea easily disposed of 19th placed Manchester City at Stamford Bridge with a 3-0 scoreline. It wasn’t as one sided as the final score suggests as for the first half a desperate Man City held off Chelsea and even had a couple of chances to go ahead late in the half but could not take advantage. The second half wasn’t as kind to City as Chelsea stepped up a gear and after 49 minutes Etxeberria turned inside before playing a ball into the box, Jose Mari beat Weaver to the ball and it was 1-0 to Chelsea. 69 minutes in Gallas made it 2 from Gronkjaer’s corner and then 2 minutes before time Joe Cole iced the cake with a 25 yard shot into an empty net after Weaver deflected Mutu’s close range chance.

Chelsea claim title again

Liverpool’s midweek loss at Aston Villa ensured that Chelsea could not be caught at the top of the Premier League making it back-to-back titles at Stamford Bridge under Vlad Shiagichevskiy. A month ago Liverpool looked real challengers for the title but with only 2 points from the last 4 matches the reds title chances have slipped out of their grasp. Chelsea fans celebrated at the bridge when news from Birmingham filtered through, however the consensus amongst supporters was that the club still had bigger fish to fry in the Champions League.

Winning league with a couple of games to go is nice relief, but to win by Liverpool losing is a bit disappointing as I was enjoying the challenge of Gerard Houllier’s side. We still have to beat them in champions league semi and prove that we deserve to be in final. I saw Mr Roman today, he did not congratulate me on winning league which I thought a bit strange. Lately he has seemed distant like there’s something worrying him greatly, if we can win champions league I will make him happy no doubt.

Wolverhampton Wanderers @ Molineux, Wolverhampton – English Premier League

Sereni – Bridge, Desailly, Mendez, Melchiot – Delgado, Makelele, Geremi (Lampard), Mutu – Gudjohnsen (C.Cole), Jose Mari

Wolves 1 – 1 Chelsea

Jose Mari 90

Wolves wasted a rare opportunity of defeating Chelsea when they condeded a late, late equaliser at Molineux. They had dominated all day and Kenny Miller rightfully put them in front after only 8 minutes, delightfully chipping Matteo Sereni in a one on one. The introduction of Frank Lampard for Chelsea late changed the shape of the match, Lampard who has played just 4 league matches this season totally controlled the midfield and in the 92nd minute Adrian Mutu’s powerful shot was saved but Jose Mari snapped up the rebound to equalise for Chelsea.

Liverpool have been best team in England behind us this season so they will be hard opponents in battle for place in champions league final. England star Michael Owen will not quite be fully fit for either match after breaking his leg earlier in the year, apart from Owen the Liverpool side is at full strength although an out of from Harry Kewell will probably start on the bench tomorrow if we can believe what Houllier is saying to papers. We have been very lucky with injuries since early season concerns passed, full squad is available to me so I think we can confidently go after Liverpool at Anfield tomorrow with our best attacking side possible.

Liverpool @ Anfield, Liverpool – European Champions League Semi Final 1st Leg

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Duff, J.Cole (Geremi), Veron (Mutu), Gronkjaer – Olisadebe, Mpenza (Jose Mari)

Liverpool 1 – 2 Chelsea

Olisadebe 9

Mpenza 81

Chelsea look set for their first Champions League final appearance after disposing of Liverpool at Anfield 2-1. The blues were off to a perfect start after 9 minutes when Joe Cole cut the ball back from the byline for Olisadebe to clinically finish from 12 yards. For the remainder of the first half Chelsea sat back and Liverpool started to put together some good football, Heskey looked the main threat on Chelsea’s goal and should have scored on the half hour but his close range header was brilliantly tipped over by Cudicini. Liverpool introduced Kewell early in the second half to great effect as he immediately started running at Gronkjaer and Yobo on Chelsea’s right. On 60 minutes Heskey intelligently flicked on Kewell’s low pass into the area where Diouf beat Cudicini to the ball to equalise. Chelsea introduced Geremi and Mutu to change up the midfield structure, on 81 minutes Duff’s short run into the area drew away Hyppia before chipping across to the unmarked Mpenza who delightfully glanced his header past Kirkland at the far post for a 2-1 away lead. Late in the game Jose Mari should have made it 3 for Chelsea but Kirkland foiled the Spaniard, however Chelsea would be more than happy to go home with a crucial victory after outplaying Liverpool.

In the other semi final an injury depleted Bayern Munich went down dramatically to Ajax 3-1 in Amsterdam. Bayern attacking options were restricted with Elber, Makaay, Scholl, Ze Roberto and Salihamidzic all out with long-term injuries, and Ajax took advantage of this by clinically disposing of the Germans. Bayern’s only fit quality striker Santa Cruz gave them an early lead before Sikora equalised for Ajax. Sonck added a couple more in the second half and Bayern now have an uphill challenge to make it to the final.

Champions League Semi Finals 1st Leg

Ajax 3 – 1 Bayern

Liverpool 1 – 2 Chelsea

Halfway to final with good result at Anfield now i can only hope the players finish it off at home and don't think about final just yet.

Arsenal @ Stamford Bridge, London – English Premier League

Cudicini – Babayaro (Bridge), Mendez (Geremi), Gallas, Melchiot – Gronkjaer, Veron, Lampard, Delgado – Mutu (C.Cole), Jose Mari

Chelsea 2 – 0 Arsenal

Mutu 23

Carlton Cole 83

Chelsea ended another successful Premier League season with a crowd pleasing 2-0 win over Arsenal. The Stamford Bridge faithful were in the mood to party and on 23 minutes Argintinean Delgado whipped across the ball from the right for the unmarked Mutu to volley home from 12 yards. Late in the match as the blue masses continued to celebrate Carlton Cole sealed the result rounding the keeper to score from Delgado’s through ball. The news filtered through that Man U would claim 3 points and the travelling gunners supporters had seen their team drop to 4th place on the final day of the season. For Chelsea Delgado and Lampard were excellent showing they can contribute to this outstanding outfit when required.

I was very surprised and very pleased to hear that Ajax would take a handy 3-1 lead into the other semi final with Bayern – along with Man U, Bayern are the team which we struggle with the most, it’s such a shame to hear of their injury woes (sarc)! For the return leg with Liverpool we just need home draw to go into final but I expect us to win still. Young Babayaro will miss the Liverpool match with a knock to his calf but he should return for the final should we advance. I will not risk Veron and Gronkjaer as they are both just one yellow card from suspension, I think Mutu and Etxeberria can more than cover their absence. Liverpool are still without Owen but we will have to shut down Kewell this time as I’m sure he will start, they need goals after all.

Liverpool @ Stamford Bridge, London – European Champions League Semi Final 2nd Leg

Cudicini – Bridge, Terry (Melchiot), Gallas, Yobo – Duff, J.Cole (Delgado), Etxeberria, Mutu – Olisadebe (Jose Mari), Mpenza

Chelsea 2 – 0 Liverpool

Mpenza 6, 65

Chelsea will advance to their first Champions League final after easily disposing of Liverpool 2-0, 4-1 on aggregate. In a tight first half Chelsea were determined to restrict Liverpool’s scoring opportunities, on 9 minutes the blues increased Liverpool’s woes when Yobo’s through ball was flicked on by Mutu for Mpenza to score under the oncoming Kirkland. The second half was all Chelsea as Liverpool saw their European dreams fade away, Mpenza sealed the tie with a second on 65 minutes following good work by Duff on the left, Olisadebe cut the ball back for Mpenza to crack home. It could have been more but it was already more than enough for Chelsea, the delight of club owner Roman Abramovich in the stands was there for all to see.

In the other semi final Ajax held on to their 2 goal margin from the first leg with a 1-1 draw in Munich against Bayern. Sonck sealed the tie with an early strike and when Santa Cruz pulled one back it was already over for Bayern. Ajax had been given little hope of advancing past the 2nd round and now they found themselves in the Champions League final.

Champions League Semi Finals 2nd Leg

Bayern 1 – 1 Ajax (2-4)

Chelsea 2 – 0 Liverpool (4-1)

Roman was very emotional in rooms after match today, he feels his dream is coming very close now. We have to win now, there is no point making the final only to lose. I must win for Roman against Ajax this means so much to him and I’m sure the lads won’t let him down. Is great to see Roman so happy, is like a great weight is off his shoulders.

United’s FA Cup

Manchester United have defeated Liverpool to claim the FA Cup with Ruud van Nistelrooy’s extra time winner. Departing United manager Alex Ferguson described it a bitter-sweet victory, after failing to challenge in the Premier League this season Ferguson was disappointed to end his illustrious career without challenging Chelsea for the title.

Shakhtar glory

Ukrainian club Shakhtar have claimed the UEFA Cup after a dramatic 3-2 victory over Man Utd. Shaktar star Aghahowa scored the second for the Ukrainians and after Man U came back through Pizarro and Keane, it was Fedorchuk who had the final say heading powerfully past Barthez. Alex Ferguson steps out of football on a sour note however none will forget the contribution he has made to football.

Our perfect pre-match preparation for the champions league final continues with no injuries in our current first-team squad after Babayaro proved his fitness today. Mpenza’s recent form has been unbelievable, he has scored in past 5 champions league matches and now has 9 in the competition – equal with Olisadebe. Ajax will be missing Swede Ibrahimovic and also Van der Vaart, however Litmanen at 33 is in career best form and Mpenza’s Belgian strike partner Sonck has scored 9 times in the competition leading Ajax to the final with his goals.

Ajax @ Munchner Olympiastadion, Munich – European Champions League Final

Cudicini – Babayaro, Terry, Gallas, Yobo – Duff, J.Cole, Veron (Etxeberria), Gronkjaer – Olisadebe, Mpenza

In an unbelievable first 5 minutes of the Champions League final not a single pass was completed by either side as the nerves of the occasion were evident, whichever side settled first would surely take this dual on the highest stage. It was to be the cool head of Nigerian born Polish star Emmanuel Olisadebe who on just 6 minutes clinically beat Slekelenburg at the near post following an Mpenza cross from the right flank, giving Chelsea the first break of the match. Just 4 minutes later Maxwell’s long range shot for Ajax was heading top corner before Cudicini intervened tipping the ball over the cross-bar. The game was levelling out as a contest approaching half-time when after sustained Ajax pressure Duff broke down the left for Chelsea, from the byline Duff crossed deep to the far post where Mpenza headed Chelsea to a 2-0 lead. The blues supporters who had made the trip to Munich were ecstatic at half-time as half of the stadium rocked with unbridled emotion, Ajax were down and it appeared their dream run was going to come to an end at the final hurdle. Early in the second-half Stekelenburg made 2 great saves to keep Ajax within reach, on 61 minutes Sonck broke free behind the Chelsea defence and was one on one with Cudicini only to be foiled by the Italian stopper. On 66 minutes Mpenza then set up Olisadebe to ice the result, heading past Stekelenburg powerfully to make it 3-0. As the final whistle blew Chelsea had deservedly run out easy winners with clinical finishing by Mpenza and Olisadebe, Mpenza was later unanimously voted man of the match whilst Olisadebe’s 2 goals gave him the crown of top scorer in the Champions League.

Chelsea 3 – 0 Ajax

Olisadebe 7, 66

Chelsea take Europe!

Chelsea are the champions of Europe following a 3-0 obliteration of Ajax, club owner Roman Abramovich the architect of Chelsea’s current success was visibly overwhelmed by the result, he was however quick to pass the glory onto Chelsea boss Vlad Shiagichevskiy as the real hero of this result. “The Shag†as he has been jovially named by his adoring blues army of supporters, has taken Chelsea to consecutive Premier League titles and now has claimed the Champions League title for the first time ever for the club. As the fans celebrated deep into the night on the streets of Munich and equally in London, Shiagichevskiy and Abramovich were seen calmly sitting in a dark corner of the Munich beer hall in which the players were celebrating. The conversation was guarded and undoubtedly in Russian, the masterminds were still at work.

(Cheers spurzgrrl! Hope to see you in stage 2 soon. Still working on my strategy with regards to how to attack the Russian leagues, i think i'll be taking any job just to get away from Chelsea and then start feeling out the Russian competition.)

Roman was delighted by win in Champions League final he believes that Chelsea is now well on it’s way to becoming European powerhouse thanks to my work over the past 2 years. During celebrations after final match Roman and I had long talk in Munich bar, Roman decided I needed to know about problems he has been having during past 12 months. It all started back last summer – UEFA had been investigating all transfers of non-EU players for previous season in relation to serious allegations of visa fraud and corruption in european football, this was serious issues. Roman became involved in investigation when UEFA insisted to have papers for Ukranian defender Dmitri Parfenov who we had signed in December 2002 to check legality, we had no papers for Parfenov for as Roman explained to me the FA held all papers, but UEFA and FA both claimed that there were no papers for this player. Roman did not know what to do he was sure that he was being persecuted by officials for what they perceived as actions that would weaken fabric of football in Europe and particularly Britain. Hearing this I was not to worried, I thought surely we can axplain situation and send Parfenov back to wherever he came from (I forget!) with compensation and all will be righted, yes?

After much negotiation and delays Roman and UEFA came to agreement to put off actions until end of the current season in best interest of the game – this time had come! Due to the alleged illegal nature of Parfenov’s transfer UEFA had Chelsea offices turned over by detectives for all papers of all club players and staff, papers were all checked and they came across another problem. I was starting to see why Roman has been so concerned over past months, Roman told me that they had problems with the legality of my visa which was organised when Roman had just taken over at Chelsea – but Roman organised visa I could not understand how problem. Roman then told me more than I wanted to know, he had organised visa for me, for Dmitri, for my wife Tatiana (now back in Moscow) all from a man Boris in London’s east. This Boris was illegal man too, he helped me in London I thought he was just friend of Roman – I liked Boris, he was from same town ouside of Moscow as me. I trusted Roman, now what?

Visa scandal rocks Chelsea

Allegations that Chelsea boss Vladimir Shiagichevskiy is involved in an illegal visa racket have been denied by the football club. Football Association representatives however are confident that the allegations are true and that the current Chelsea manager will soon ne extradited back to Russia. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has guaranteed the public that Shiagichevskiy is a man of his word and if he denies these reports then the club will back him all the way.

Roman has suggested that I should go back to Russia and be with Tatiana, there is no point being in London and causing more problems and Roman tells me that he will make sure problem is sorted out so I can be back in charge of Chelsea by start of season. I must not worry too much now – nothing I can do but go home and spend some time with my family, I leave it in Roman’s hands.

Who is leading Chelsea?

Chelsea’s first pre-season training was a media circus and the blues sure gave us something to write about. The absence of Vlad Shiagichevskiy confirmed England’s worst kept secret that the Russian who has lead Chelsea to consecutive Premier League titles and now also claimed the Champions League trophy has returned to Russia following the much hyped visa scandal. Just as everyone was packing up star midfielder Juan Veron and Chelsea’s assistant manager Glynn Williams appeared to come to blows following an ugly tackle by the Argentine on new signing Lucio from Bayer Leverkusen. As Lucio lay clutching his knee Williams furiously confronted Veron and the Argentine reacted, what followed saw John Terry and Marcel Desailly manage to restrain the two parties and avoid any further actions taking place. This will definitely have repercussions.

Veron departure pleases fans

Within days of violently confronting caretaker manager Glynn Williams Juan Veron has been transferred to Valencia with Williams stating that someone of Veron’s character was not required at this football club and he will not be missed. Fellow Chelsea players had no issues with the actions taken by the club and Chelsea fans who were at the ground following the announcement were visibly pleased to see the back of the temperamental Argentine. Veron’s departure now means that three high profile blues players have left the club in the past month following the departures of Alan Smith to Newcastle and Steed Malbranque to Barcelona. Neither Smith or Malbranque made an impact at Stamford Bridge last season and caretaker manager Glynn Williams is confident that Frank Lampard and Joe Cole can step up to more than cover the loss of Veron.

Roman is having troubles sorting out visa problems, it appears bigger than just me and football club now so I don’t know if I will be back in London for sometime now. At the moment Roman has told me he will honour our current contract at Chelsea so I am still manager but Mr Williams will be caretaker until situation is sorted out one way or other. In meantime I have decided to spend some time in Russian countryside with Tatiana, after all I’m quite the wealthy football manager thanks to life at Chelsea and Champions League success.

I follow Chelsea success in papers and on television now, we won Community shield again beating Man Utd and since have started season with 3 wins and a loss against Arsenal. Looks like Mpenza is continuing great form from late last season he already scores 6 goals and is looking to be playing very good. Roman says appeal against my new visa being granted is not going to be held till late November now! No point getting angry I think I will use this time to travel a little, Tatiana wants to see her family in Novosibirsk which is southern Siberia so we will spend a couple of months there. I may have to get used to leaving Chelsea in Mr Willams hands.

September – November ‘04

Life is beautiful in Novosibirsk this time of year, winter chills are starting to come but I am enjoying Russian lifestyle here away from hustle of cities.

In papers I see that Chelsea are doing fine without me, they are currently 2nd in premiership and cruising along in group stage of Champions League. Roman speak to me other day he thinks that appeal will be decided one way or other in next few weeks, we will soon see what happens worst case is that I cannot work outside of Russia if appeal fails – this does not worry me too much now as I have enjoyed last months here more than all time in London.

Shiagichevskiy quits

Today at Stamford Bridge club owner Roman Abramovich has announced that Vladimir Shiagichevskiy has quit as manager of Chelsea following the protracted appeals against his visa fraud case. Shiagichevskiy who is living in Russia now stated that following his departure from London he has lost the passion to manage in England, his love for the Chelsea football club remains and the football club will no doubt forever be in his debt after he lead the team to Champions League success for the first time ever.

Winter ‘04/05

I am getting used to life after Chelsea. Tatiana and I decided not to return to our house in Moscow instead we have moved to the countryside in southern Siberia it is very isolated but nice to be so different from London – Tomsk is the nearest city with almost half a million people in it, mostly a industrial town but the countryside is magnificent. We are also near to Novosibirsk and Tatiana’s family, after quite a time away from football now I am starting to get itch again to manage football team. I still speak to Roman regularly he says that Chelsea are going well, they have signed Louis van Haal from Newcastle as new manager I wish them all the best but it is hard to hear of someone else managing my old team. Life goes on.

I think Tatiana must be getting tired of seeing me all day every day because today she showed me newspaper from Tomsk, the Tom Tomsk football club were advertising for a new manager after Valery Petrakov was sacked on the weekend after finishing a dissapointing 12th in the Russian first division at the end of the season. She thinks I should call them? I suppose I could, I have been missing the action.

Tom Tomsk welcome Shiagichevskiy

In a shock appointment Tom Tomsk have announced that former Chelsea boss Vladimir Shiagichevskiy will manage them for the next two years after he came to an agreement with general manager Yuri Stepanov yesterday. Shiagichevskiy who led Chelsea to both domestic and European glory has high hopes for Tom, he has stated that after the dramas at Chelsea over the summer he is looking forward to settling into regional football management in Russia’s first division. Shiagichevskiy hopes to take Tom into the Premier division by the end of his two year contract, and from there who knows what could happen.

First day at club with Tom Tomsk is a bit different to Chelsea. Our home ground Trud has good facilities but is small, only room for 7000 seating and 12000 is total capacity. The squad here has potential I have been looking at videos from last season as the players are on off-season break right now, there are a few very good players but there is also lots of average ones. I think my first job when they come back will be to reduce our wage bill by either sacking/selling players or reducing some ridiculous contract’s which I’ve come across in the office (wage bill allowed is 750k Ruble – we are paying 987k R!!).
