Build a Bonfire - Scare a Rook

Thursday morning, and Steve Mackay has gone - £120,000 coming in from Essex is certainly a sweetner, however, and with the club's 'bottom line at a very healthy £265,618 - something most clubs at this level would love - we'll be looking to make a couple of additions sooner rather than later.

No deals are likely to be possible before our 'glamour' friendly against the first team of Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, but - as we told Lewes fans on Southern FM on Friday lunchtime - irons are very much in the fire.

Lewes v Sheffield Wednesday - Preseason Friendly (29/7/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Robinson, Hooper, Hankin, Hustwick, Bryan, Martin, Kennett*, Johanssen, Sigire, Small

Subs; Legge, Tanner (GK), Okuonghae, Taylor, Holligan

Leon Legge begins his comeback from injury with a spot on the bench, whilst Bryan returns for Harkin and up front Bally Smart earns his first Rooks start. A sellout crowd saw what was expected - an early goal for the visitors. After just two minutes, Kevin Kyle finished off a good move as the Owls countered, and when Georgiadis netted a second on 8, it looked all over. McGovern's third midway through the half exposed the sheer gulf in class between the two sides, and we were something of a disapointment. We're certainly lacking something going forward, and those moves to strengthen will have to step up a gear.

It's Monday morning when the first of the new Rooks flies in - Dwain Clarke is no stranger to these parts, rejoining after a year with Canvey Island on a free transfer. He's a direct replacement for Mackay - a tricky, goal-getting winger who was immensely popular in his previous spell at the Dripping Pan.

Lewes v Southampton XI - Preseason Friendly (1/8/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Hooper, Hankin, Legge, Harkin, Clarke, Kennett*, Barker, Sigire, Holligan

Subs; Okuonghae, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Johanssen, Lockett

New boy Clarke makes his second Rooks debut - with Harkin, Legge, Barker and Holligan also added to the starting lineup for the game against a Southampton side that contains a mix of youth and experience. The fact we were 4-0 down by the 12th minute says a lot about Southampton's dominance - Yohan Folly, Ricardo Fuller (2) and Totti put the Saints into a comprehensive lead, and when Jésus Mendoza headed the 5th on 32, it really was all over. We made five changes at the break - and immediatley pulled one back, with Ryan Lockett on target from close range. The second half was more of the same - though Russ Tanner did manage to keep a clean sheet. On 82 though we grabbed another - 'keeper Poom perhaps unwisely trying to close down when Holligan muscled into the area, allowing Liam Bridcutt the chance to find the bottom corner after a poor clearance. The result is nothing but disapointing - the performance though showed grit and determination.

Just one friendly remains then, the trip to Littlehampton on Saturday. We'll go with a side that remains very much up in the air - but one who definatley won't travel is Paul Kennett - the skipper could be out for up to a month with a twisted ankle, making him a major doubt for the opening day. Another one who doesen't go to The Sportsfield is Mo Harkin - but for a very different reason. Suprisingly, Rochdale came in with a £5000 offer for the Northern Irishman - and there is no way we are turning down hard cash for a player whos fitness isn't the best. Still, Mo has been a useful player, and leaves with our best wishes.

Littlehampton v Lewes - Preseason Friendly (5/8/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Hooper, Hankin*, Legge, Clarke, Bryan, Bridcutt, Johanssen, Holligan, Lockett

Subs; Okuonghae, Tanner (GK), Taylor, Barker, Sigire

As preseason results have been awful so far - a single, and somewhat underserved draw against Sussex League Hailsham Town our only result that hasn't ended in defeat - we're going with the side who I hope will start in the opening competitive game next weekend. Some then will have noticed the changes from last season - Sigire amongst the subsitutes as a result of Lockett's terrific form, whilst Clarke and, for the moment at least, Bryan and Bridcutt are also included. The stats, however, told the story - we managed all of two shots on the Littlehampton goal, neither of which were on target. Fortunatley, Littlehampton failed to really trouble Wilkerson - but did score the only goal of the game on the stroke of half time through Ben Hill. The verdict on preseason to take into the new campaign? - Must do better.

Sunday morning, and a new arrival - £1000 signing Ryan Semple comes in from Peterborough and is a prigth winger. Like the player he replaces, Mo Harkin, Ryan hails from Northern Ireland but at 21 is a little younger than the recent departure. Ryan is quick and tricky, and will hopefully become a crowd favourite whilst at the club - he's signed an initial 2-year deal, with a £500,000 Minimum Fee Release clause significantly higher than that of Ruben Zadkovich .

Thursday saw the squad changed again - but this time in a temporary way. We've faxed details of Antonio Bryan, Bally Smart, Steve Robinson and Joe Martin to clubs who we think will be interested in taking them on loan deals. All young, the quartet could perhaps do with some more first team football before we consider them ready for the Conference South. It may well mystify Steve Robinson , who made plenty of appearances last season, but his match fitness is worrying, and perhaps a spell of hard graft in a lower league will do him good.

Plenty of offers for the players came in over Thursday and Friday - but the young lads hadn't made up their minds by the weekend - and we open the Conference South campaign with a trip to Essex.

Billericay v Lewes - Conference South Game 1 (12/8/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Hooper, Hankin*, Legge, Clarke, Semple, Bridcutt, Johanssen, Holligan, Sigire

Subs; Okuonghae, Tanner (GK), Taylor, Barker, Lockett

Ryan Semple and Jean-Michel Sigire are the only changes to the side who faltered at Littlehampton - but there is a tleast a more positive atmosphere after a preseason campaign fraught with difficulty and woeful results. We began very brightly - when Billericay's bargain capture Junior Lewis pushed Bridcutt on 4, Holligan wasn't too far away with a flicked header from Hankin's free kick. On 17, after Barcham and Akuamoah both had chances for the home side, Bridcutt robbed Fiskin and played the ball to Johanssen. His probing pass saw Gavin Holligan race away, and after firing his initial shot at 'keeper Turner, last season's top scorer rammed the ball into the net at the second attempt. The newcomers to the League - who are, to their credit, very plucky and have signed some useful players, then hit back hard - ex-Spurs youngster Andy Barcham was close before Steve Lyon drew them level on 27. On the stroke of half time, they grabbed another - Lewis' strong challenge seeing the ball run into the path of Eddie Akuamoah, who drilled into the corner. We made a couple of changes at half time - Sigire and Johanssen replaced by Lockett and Barker - and on 54, Ryan Lockett fired us level - his classy finish meeting Clarke's cross to bring us back into the game. We then began to get on top, and Bridcutt tested Turner before Barker fired wide. Impressive debutant Bridcutt made way on 75 for Okuonghae, and on 83, we won a free kick in a dangerous position on the edge of the box on the right hand side. Barker floated it to the far post and a desperate lunge from Sean Hankin gave us the lead - his header going into the corner. We continued to pressurise - Barker close after more good work from the very impressive Dwain Clarke on 88, before Clarke crossed again deep into injury time. This time, Gavin Holligan's bustle was rewarded - his effort scrambled home to give us a fine win, and a good start to the season.

FC Beigem gaat het maken; Thanks, we're doing a lot right but it's just sloppiness on occasions. Hopefully we'll do things more professionally this year.

Aside from Steve Robinson , for whom we've recieved no offers, the loan-listed players have all attracted plenty of interest - and now it'll be up to them to decide which club they make the switch to.

Other than that though, it would be a quiet few days ahead of the midweek match - our first Home game of the competitive season sees us welcome Braintree.

Lewes v Braintree - Conference South Game 2 (15/8/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Hooper, Hankin*, Legge, Clarke, Semple, Bridcutt, Johanssen, Holligan, Sigire

Subs; Okuonghae, Tanner (GK), Taylor, Barker, Lockett

An unchanged side for the visit of George Borg's men - We started well, albeit with both sides scrapping hard, and on 6, took the lead - Dean Hooper's long, searching ball forward found Gavin Holligan , who beat 'keeper Duffy from just outside the area. Braintree got at us quickly - the Essex side, as a George Borg team usually are, were pretty physical - Blackwood didn't give up to break through before hitting the woodwork on 9, before Prestedge fired wide. On 37, however it was Lewes who were celebrating - a looping header from Jean-Michel Sigire doubling our lead after Hankin's ball had put Henderson under pressure in the air. With Semple not quite match fit still, the new signing made way for Barker at the break - and Lockett also made his first home appearance of the season, replacing goalscorer Holligan. On 49 however Braintree struck back - with ex-Newcastle midfielder Daryl Smylie planting the ball into the roof of the net from the edge of the area after a neat through pass from youngster Kyle Storer. We could have had a third on 62 - indeed Sigire did put the ball in the net from Hankin's long ball - but as he wheeled away to celebrate, the Frenchman saw the assistant and referee Barker deep in talks - and after an agonising 30 seconds, no goal was awarded. Braintree sub Joe Flurry should have equalised three minutes from time - his pathetic shot straight at Wilkerson from close range after a good through ball from the impressive Storer, but it wasn't to be - another useful three points.

While obviously the main purpose of their visit was to play a League fixture, Braintree manager George Borg had another reason to travel to Sussex on a Tuesday evening - and his team returned defeated, but with a new recruit. Bally Smart rejected the opportunity to join Margate for three months, but instead will play Conference South football for the League newcomers.

On Wednesday morning, Antonio Bryan chose his destination - the ex-Man Utd winger will spend 3 months at AFC Wimbledon after turning down the opportunity to go from the Premiership to the Badgers Ales Sussex County League in a few months - he could have gone on loan to Hailsham Town. Ex-Spurs man Joe Martin , however, will do exactly that - the 17-year old left winger is going to spend 3 months by the seaside, just down the road at Eastbourne Town .

By far the biggest news of the week though came off the field - in a slight revamp, ex-Brighton man Simon Morgan could be coming in as my assistant after Stuart Cash chose to move to a more traditional Coaching role and step down from his position as my right-hand-man.

Basingstoke v Lewes - Conference South Game 3 (19/8/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Hooper, Hankin*, Legge, Williams, Semple, Bridcutt, Johanssen, Holligan, Sigire

Subs; Okuonghae, Tanner (GK), Taylor, Barker, Lockett

With Dwain Clarke rested, another new singing in the form of Mike Williams comes in. Williams certainly isn't a natural left winger, but has the ability to settle in well in that more forward role, with the Welshman certainly a key part of the squad. One of the features of our play this season has been scoring early goals - and again we achieved that at The Camrose. A well-worked ball out to the right found Semple, who swept a deep cross into the middle for Martin Johanssen to crack the ball beyond 'keeper Rice. Semple then fired wide, while at the othe end Wilkerson was kept busy, holding Ogbodo's 14th minute header. On 27 however the Nigerian was felled in the box, and as the last man, Sean Hankin had to go. Following him off after taking a slight knock was Ryan Semple, as well as Dean Hooper in a tactical reorganisation. Barker and Okuonghae replaced them, with a 3-man central defence. Nick Skinner, incidentally, blasted his penalty in off the underside of the bar. Basingstoke got their second before the break - on 38 Wilkerson made a terric stop from Wyatt, but was unable to get up in time to prevent Uwakbunkeonye Ogbodo from tapping in the loose ball on the rebound. At half time we made our final change, replacing Williams with Taylor - and immediatley the substitute had an impact. On 47 Bridcutt intercepted the ball in midfield and came forward, before passing to Barker. The youngster fed Chris Taylor , who then made no mistake - drilling the ball beyond 'keeper Rice to pull us level. Basingstoke never gave up - Bristow headed against the bar on 58 - and at the back, Andrew Teague seemed dominant in the air, twice outjumping Sigire. On 83 though the French striker got hold of a loose ball in midfield, before embarking on a lung-busting run to the edge of the area. His simple pass released Gavin Holligan , and he made no mistake from just inside the area. A fourth would follow in injury time - Johanssen's ball down the line releasing Holligan, who swung the ball over to the far post, where it was met by Steve Barker , the youngster controlling before beating Rice at the near post. Top after 3 games!

Victory comes with three disapointments - notably injuries to Ryan Semple (Thigh) and Liam Bridcutt (Wrist) - and suspension for Sean Hankin , who was sent off as the final man. We'll appeal - Ogbodo went down a little easily - but to be honest I'm not expecting anything useful back in the post from the FA.

Simon Morgan took over from Stuart Cash as my assistant on Monday morning - Cash moving to a Coaching role with 'Morgs' becoming Number Two - administrative work will be his main area of work, but Simon will also have a part to play in the changing room and on the training field.

Lewes v Forest Green Rovers - Conference South Game 4 (26/8/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hooper*, Legge, Clarke, Johanssen, Okuonghae, Barker, Holligan, Sigire

Subs; Robinson, Tanner (GK), Taylor, Hunt, Lockett

Young Micheal Hunt is called up from the Youth team to sit on the bench for the visit of highly-backed Forest Green. The Gloucestershire side came down last season from Conference National, but are expected by the bookmakers to return at the first attempt. Clarke, Okuonghae and Barker also come into the starting eleven, replacing the banned Hankin and injured duo Bridcutt and Semple. As expected, the visitors set about us from the off - even though Holligan slammed one over after just 24 seconds. Forest Green made the most of this early pressure, and on 19, David Shaw took advantage of a defensive mixup to steal in and open the scoring from close range at the far post. The second would come 20 minutes later - on 39 Shaw the provider with Carl Finnigan on target, heading home from a corner. We rallied after the break, with substitutions changing the game, but were still somewhat disapointing - Lockett, Johanssen and Holligan all close without really coming close to scoring the goal that could have set up a revival. Disapointing, but it's the first defeat of the season in any case.

Over the weekend we took the decision to add another striker to the squad - and quickly identified our target. By Tuesday, 32-Year old Duane Darby had put pen to paper on a deal until the end of the season. Duane is a big, physical player - and has always scored goals. In just over 400 professional appearances, he has scored 124 times - and for some pretty poor sides too. His best season came in 2000-01 - netting 24 in 38 after signing for Rushden & Diamonds from Notts County. He joins us on a free after leaving Shrewsbury in the summer.

Saturday, and the World Champions - and the other 51 European nations - start the task of qualifying for Euro 2008. England began with a 1-1 draw away in Belgium - Andy Johnson scoring for Sven's men. Ireland beat Lithuania 2-0 - goals from Elliott and Connolly providing the victory.

Better news arrived on Tuesday morning - Liam Bridcutt returning to training after he picked up a wrist injury in the victory over Basingstoke.

Further international action followed in midweek - with Northern Ireland evoking memories of 1982 against Spain at Windsor Park. This time, unfortunatley, they would not be successful - having two dismissed as the Spanish cruised to a 3-0 win. England meanwhile thumped Azerbijan 7-0 - Owen and Johnson bagging a brace each, with Wright-Phillips, Defoe and Gerrard also netting. Scotland went down 1-0 to Serbia & Montenegro , with Wales suprisingly beaten 2-0 by Lithuania . Ireland survivied an early scare to beat Lichtenstein 2-1 - Macken and Robbie Keane scoring the goals in Dublin.

Lewes v Yeading - Conference South Game 5 (09/09/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Hooper, Hankin*, Legge, Clarke, Johanssen, Bridcutt, Barker, Holligan, Lockett

Subs; Okuonghae, Tanner (GK), Williams, Taylor, Darby

With Darby on the bench, Hankin back from a ban and Bridcutt back after injury, there are changes to the side who were outplayed by Forest Green a fortnight ago. We're still without Semple, so midfielder Johanssen continues wide on the right, but with Yeading struggling, the prematch discussion is of an optimistic nature. After a scrappy opening, we began to impose ourselves on the game, with the tricky Clarke causing real problems for the visitors. Holligan grazed the bar with a header on 22, while on 34 Lockett inexplicably shot wide after failing to connect properly with a through ball. On 39 though - and somewhat against the run of play - veteran Yeading defender Ashley Vickers saw a gap, and hit an effort as a set-piece broke down. We should have hit back immediatley - Holligan drawing a good stop from 'keeper Bryant, but the loose ball fell invitingly to Bridcutt - who tried a volley on his left peg, and ended up screwing his shot well wide of goal. Three minutes later, however, Gavin Holligan met Hankin's cross from the left with a bullet header and did draw us level. At half time I told the boys that they could go out and win it - and despite making a couple of changes, was given precisely nothing for most of the second period. Play became bogged down in scrappy midfield battles, with a number of bookings. Nine minutes before the end, however, Clarke lofted the ball towards Darby on the left of the box. He nodded it back, and Williams crossed perfectly for Gavin Holligan to power a second past Bryant. Four minutes later we won a corner - and after it had been headed away, Bridcutt played the ball back to the edge of the box for the corner taker, Steve Barker , to drill a powerful shot beyond Bryant which beat the 'keeper at the near post. As a spectacle, the Second Half wasn't a patch on the first - but on a practical level, the two goals are very useful. Back to winning ways!

Sunday morning, and the return to fitness of Paul Kennett is another major boost - though young Bridcutt has done well, the skipper is a more experienced player in the midfield holding role, and offers us plenty of backbone and fighting spirit - as his role suggests.

Later in the week, we also welcomed Ryan Semple back to training after his ankle injury - the capture from Peterborough settling in well to life at The Dripping Pan.

Welling v Lewes - Conference South Game 6 (16/09/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hankin, Legge, Clarke, Semple, Kennett*, Johanssen, Holligan, Darby

Subs; Okuonghae, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Barker, Lockett

Changes then to the squad ahead of the trip to Park View Road - returns for Kennett and Semple, and a first start for Duane Darby - while at the back, Hooper is rested for Williams to come in on the left. We started very well - and within 25 seconds, had the ball in the net - Holligan's strike ruled out for offside. It did set the scene though - on 7 minutes Shearer dwelt on the ball just outside the area, and was robbed by Johanssen, who quickly fed Gavin Holligan for the opener. Two minutes later however Welling drew level - winning a free kick some 30 yards from goal after Kennett pulled back Day. Oliver James stepped up and lifted the free kick over the wall and into the net. We then proceeded to dominate the first half without scoring again - Darby, Holligan and Johanssen all busy. The Swede, as well as a tiring Semple, was replaced at the break - Barker and Lockett on. The second half though started with the Rooks in more incisive mood - Hustwick won the ball in the air for Lockett, playing wide right, to loft it forward - into the path of Gavin Holligan , who ran on and made no mistake with an excellent finish. As the second half limped, rather than ran, to a conclusion, Welling rallied a little - Pinnock shooting over, while Clarke saw a header stopped by Wilkerson. Two minutes from time, however, we broke down the right - Hustwick putting the ball over the top for Holligan to run on. He drew 'keeper Turner to the near post, before unselfishly putting the ball square for Duane Darby to smash his first goal for the club. A minute later, it was four - Kennett the provider this time, and Gavin Holligan on target with a low finish into the corner to claim his hatrick - and send us back to the top of the table!

Last season we went all the way to the First Round - which, given our League form at the time, was something of a miracle - but now it's the time of the Second Qualifying Round yet again. The FA Cup is back - and on Monday, we learnt that it'll be a trip to Conference North leaders Marine on Saturday - Ali Watt's men have begun well after promotion from the Northern League last season, and with one-time Lewes target Matty Barlow a regular goalscorer, we may have a tricky afternoon in a competition which I'm desperate to do well in.

All in all though, it was a quiet week - players and supporters alike gathering on Friday for the long trip Northwards ahead of the big match on Saturday afternoon.

Marine v Lewes - FA Cup Second Qualifying Round (23/09/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hankin, Legge, Clarke, Semple, Kennett*, Johanssen, Holligan, Darby

Subs; Okuonghae, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Barker, Lockett

It's not quite 'dark satanic mills' - but Marine is certainly a Northern club, with the Rossett Park ground in Crosby quite traditional in it's look. On the park however, Marine are a classy team, who like to play the ball rather than rely on the direct stuff - and they could have taken an early lead, with Wilkerson having to make a couple of early stops. On 21 however it was us who opened the scoring - the 'Soft Southerners' warmed up with a great ball from Williams releasing Holligan, who poked the ball through for Duane Darby to crack the ball into the corner. Marine have some talented players, and some who have played at a high level - Rob Ullathorne amongst them, and he was winning plenty of battles against Semple on the right. The young winger gave way for Lockett at the break, but it was Marine who seemed to have more luck in the opening spell of the second half - a lot of 50/50 balls and deflections falling to the home side - Swift though twice denied by Wilkerson. We made a double change with 10 minutes to go - Clarke and Kennett departing to applause, replaced by Bridcutt and and Barker. As Marine went 'all or nothing' with the aim of securing an equaliser, we found ourselves with more space - and when Darby picked out Gavin Holligan , the big striker's 10th of the season was a pleasant inevitability.

We would come out of the Third Qualifying Round hat pretty early - but a trip to Conference South rivals Basingstoke certainly isn't the draw we were hoping for. We did, however, win at The Camrose earlier in the season, and will be considered favourites for the game.

Lewes v St Albans - Conference South Game 7 (26/09/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hankin*, Legge, Clarke, Johanssen, Bridcutt, Barker, Holligan, Darby

Subs; Okuonghae, Tanner (GK), Kennett, Taylor, Lockett

No rest for the wicked, and with a game on Tuesday we're rotating the squad - mainly the midfield, as we play a pretty all-action, physical game, and players do tire at this level. We began brightly, with Bastock's goal quickly under pressure - Darby, Bridcutt and Johanssen all threatening early on. On 36 we scored the goal that our pressure deserved - Holligan's centre finding the head of Duane Darby , who made no mistake with an expertly placed header beyond Bastock. Holligan and Hustwick too had chances towards the end of the first half, but we went in with just the solitary goal advantage at the break. St Albans faced a rocket at half time, and came out a little better at the start of the second half - they did manage to put Wilkerson under pressure, with Beech not far away. It was a little nervy at times - for both sides - but on a pitch beginning to cut up as we head towards winter, there never looked likely to be further goals. Roger will have to get his roller out - I think we can afford that luxury now that we are top of the league again!

With a game midweek and one at the weekend, training is heaily focused on fitness - we need to get the players up and running again quickly, because with the rain beginning to come and pitches getting cut up, legs will begin to get tired quicker.

Margate v Lewes - Conference South Game 8 (30/09/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hankin, Legge, Barker, Semple, Kennett*, Johanssen, Holligan, Darby

Subs; Okuonghae, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Taylor, Lockett

With that in mind we've made a couple of changes for the trip to Kent - Kennett and Semple return, with Clarke and Bridcutt missing out. Margate, however, fielded a debutant 'keeper in new signing John Dodds, and and he hardly endeared himself to the 'Gate supporters on 24 - minutes after having one disallowed, Dodds came out of his box to reach the loose ball - and Gavin Holligan robbed him before shooting into an open net from 35 yards out. Aside from seeing Mark Williams limp off with four minutes to go, that was about it - we were in control for much of the game, but even that wasn't especially inspiring. The result, however, was a positive one.

After a Man of the Match performance, it was somewhat disapointing to see Mike Williams involved in a heavy collision - the result of which, a bruised rib, will keep him out for around a fortnight.

We did, however, welcome Jean-Michel Sigire back into training on Wednesday - while on the same afternoon, Ryan Semple becomes Lewes' first International! - the winger called into the Northern Ireland Under 21 squad for the double-header of Under 21 European Championship qualifyers against Romania and Macedonia . It does, however, mean Ryan will miss Saturday's FA Cup qualifyer.

Barker; 'Fairway Has Made My Career'

'Lewes Youngster Steve Barker has today revealed to the Express his delight at working with Stuart Fairway . Barker, 17, said; "When Stuart arrived here as manager I was in the Youth team, having just finished school, and was still deciding what to do with my life. He came in and signed me to a contract, which I certainly wasn't expecting, and now that I am a regular part of the squad, I have more than been justified in that decision. A few teachers at school told me it wasn't worth the risk, and although I'm not on a professional contract, I am on a Semi-Pro deal - as with the rest of the squad - and that, along with the money I earn as an apprentice bricklayer, keeps me in fine financial shape."

Barker's rise to fame has been extrordinary - called into the Senior squad for several freindlies last season as 'emergency cover', the youngster's ability quickly impressed the Rooks boss, and Fairway signed him on a Youth Contract. When Steve reached his 17th birthday in November of last year, Fairway upgraded that to a full contract - and was handsomley rewarded. Barker bagged three goals last season, but this season has come close to eclipsing that already - two from 8 games so far'

In Romania, Ryan Semple came off the bench to win his fourth cap at Under 21 level in Northern Ireland's 2-1 win over the hosts.

Basingstoke v Lewes - FA Cup Third Qualifying Round (07/10/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Hooper, Hankin, Legge, Clarke, Johanssen, Kennett*, Barker, Holligan, Darby

Subs; Okuonghae, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Taylor, Lockett

We've brought Clarke and Hooper back into the team - with the duo replacing the injured Williams as well as unavailable Semple. Johanssen moves to the right wing, while after his display of loyalty in the paper, Barker continues in midfield. On a filthy, wet afternoon, we began well - and within 9 minutes, had taken the lead - Dwain Clarke's long cross flicked on by Holligan, into the path of Martin Johanssen , who drilled the ball underneath the diving body of 'keeper Rice. Basingstoke should have scored on 19, when Ray and Wyatt both had chances, but found Wilkerson equal after a superb double stop. At the other end, Duane Darby could have netted our second when he hit the post on 22 - an all-action Cup tie very much in essence. On 39 however Hillier's ball released Williams, and his cross into the middle was handed by Barker. With the call a little harsh, and the youngster protesting, referee Prosser signalled for a penalty, which Neville Stamp converted with no problems. Basingstoke began to press us after the interval, and when Darby departed for Lockett after picking up a knock, they really took control - two minutes later, on 61, going ahead when Uwakbunkeonye Ogbodo tapped in at the far post. While we did begin to win more possession and impose ourselves on the game, a leveller never looked likely - and instead, there will be no Cup run this year - out at the second hurdle.

Monday's Fourth Qualifying Round draw saw our conquerors, Basingstoke , come out first - drawn at home to Unibond League Radcliffe Boro . I feel we would have beaten them, so it's somewhat annoying that we already find ourselves out of the famous old competition.

The week was a quiet one - England's 3-2 win over Greece on Wednesday providing some light relief, but with a game on Saturday, we decided to focus the lads on bouncing back immediatley from the Cup exit.

Lewes v Sutton United - Conference South Game 9 (14/10/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hankin, Legge, Clarke, Semple, Kennett*, Johanssen, Holligan, Darby

Subs; Okuonghae, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Barker, Lockett

The recall of Semple will add something to the side - he's back after playing for the Northern Irish Under 21's recently, while Mike Williams passed a late fitness test and will start in place of Hooper - Barker the other player who misses out after the Cup exit. We started well with a Gavin Holligan goal on 5 minutes - and simply got better. Duane Darby rifled home from Semple's cross on 29, and that was quickly followed by the big striker's second of the game on 34, finishing after a Hankin ball had caused all sorts of trouble for the visitors. On 37, he turned provider - setting up Gavin Holligan for the fourth, with a very healthy Dripping Pan crowd in very cheerful mood on the terraces. It got worse for Sutton on 41 - as if we needed a hand, Marc Newsham put through his own net after his attempt at a clearance from Semple's cross went horribly wrong. Kennett's long ball found the head of Duane Darby on 43 to make it six - but it was simply dreamland stuff when, a minute into injury time, Gavin Holligan got through on goal to rifle the ball beyond a hapless Emberson after good work from Johannsen. Inevitably, the second half was a far quieter affair - at 7-0 up, the boys were told at half time to just keep going - and Sutton did pull one back through Steve Douglas on 58, after he got between Hustwick and Wilkerson to round the 'keeper and slot home. The result was ironic cheers from both sets of supporters - but when the final whistle blew, it was the Rooks fans who will go home happy. Just the response we were looking for after that Cup exit!

Cheers Bri, it was awesome icon_biggrin.gif - We are doing well this season, and hopefully we'll keep it going through the usually grim Christmas period.

We did replace Duane Darby after he picked up a knock towards the end - the hatrick hero took a much deserved standing ovation - but fortunatley, he's not done anything serious, so will be available for Saturday's trip to local rivals Eastbourne Borough .

Monday brings the FA Trophy Second Qualifying Round draw - our other shot at a Cup competition this season. We've got Kingstonian away - not the easiest of ties, but hopefully we'll be able to go for a run in the top Trophy that's open to Non-League Clubs now that we are out of the 'big one'.

Eastbourne Borough v Lewes - Conference South Game 10 (21/10/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hankin, Legge, Clarke, Semple, Kennett*, Johanssen, Holligan, Darby

Subs; Okuonghae, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Barker, Lockett

Unsuprisingly, after such an emphatic victory, we're going with an unchanged side for the trip down the A27 - Darby quickly shrugged off the knock that he picked up against Sutton, and the rest of the team picks itself at the moment. We began well, and after winning a corner in the third minute, should have taken the lead - Legge heading against the bar from Semple's inswinging cross. On 19 however Priory Lane went ballistic when the home side took the lead - Simmonds' cross from deep met at the far stick by young Liam Batiup, who made no mistake from close range. We soon regrouped, and a minute later, could have equalised - Johanssen heading over on 20. As it was, the leveller would come 2 minutes later - Gavin Holligan's 22nd minute header after Johanssen had expertly ghosted past his marker and put the ball into the six-yard box his 15th of the season so far. 10 minutes later, Mike Williams provided the assist - an inswinging cross from the left - for Gavin Holligan to increase his tally yet further, and give us the lead. Boro, to their credit, should have equalised ahead of the break when Smart just failed to connect with Ramsay's pass and ended up diverting the ball wide. With Legge having picked up a knock, we brought on Okuonghae in the centre of defence at the break, but continued to press, and when Kennett picked the ball up on the edge of the box, Gavin Holligan accepted his simple pass to drill the ball home and claim his hatrick. As with any local derby, however, the game would still have plenty of life in it despite the score - but even the most hardened 'Sports' fans would have feared the worst when Duane Darby met Barker's timely ball with a perfect diving header on 72 to add our fourth. Boro did grab one in injury time when Scott Ramsay was carelessly left unmarked to head Crabb's cross home, but by then it was too little, too late.

Although most of the League does have a game in hand, to be top after we've played 10 games is still an achievement - especially when you consider that the squad lost two of it's most influential players over the summer.

Sussex Express - Football - Friday 28/10/06

'Different Spellings, But 'D' Men Rule The Pan'

'The same name, but spelt differently - Dwain Clarke and Duane Darby , however, have both been big hits at Lewes since their arrivals this season. Clarke of course played for Lewes under Steve King, but when Manager Stuart Fairway was looking for a replacement for the mecurial Scot Steve Mackay , Clarke jumped at the opportunity to return to Sussex.

Darby, however, never thought he'd find himself at the club. Speaking to the Express he said; "I knew that Lewes were interested last season, but we couldn't agree terms and I was still hoping to remain in the Football League at the time. When I did leave Rushden, however, Lewes were straight on the phone, and when I got down here to talk about coming to the club, Stuart impressed me a great deal. He's got a lot of good ideas, and things are going well at the moment it seems.

Lewes v Weston-Super-Mare - Conference South Game 11 (29/10/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hankin, Legge, Clarke, Semple, Kennett*, Johanssen, Holligan, Darby

Subs; Okuonghae, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Barker, Lockett

With Legge's knock nothing to worry about, we're going for the same side against a Weston team who are doing well this season. Frank Gregan's outfit are one of the better 'footballing' sides in the League, and have several talented players, although we've gone into the game as favourites. Nobody told the vistiors that however - Weston set about us early on, and when Marvin Brown put the ball into the box, Matthew Shaw made no mistake with a first time shot on 9 minutes to put them ahead. We did put the ball in the net on 28 - Holligan's strike ruled out for offside - but 8 minutes later, Brown again provded the assist for Martin Hodge to beat 'keeper Wilkerson. We looked genuinely poor at times, with passes going astray - but on the stroke of half time, Dwain Clarke got away down the left to pull the ball square for Gavin Holligan to smash the ball home, and give us hope leading into the break. I told the lads that we could win the game at half time, and they went out with that in mind - and with our first attack of the second period, we grabbed an equaliser - winning a free kick wide on the left, which Clarke sent into the mixer for Gavin Holligan to head us level. From then on the game ebbed and flowed - but when Holligan's centre in injury time saw Darby pushed to the floor by French, young Steve Barker stepped up from the spot. He hit his penalty well, but found 'keeper Thompson equal to it. Although it was disapointing, the draw - our first of the season - is a fair result.

With no game on Saturday, training - for the first few days anyway - takes a slightly more relaxed approach. Having said that, our first draw of the season had to come at some point, and a glance at the League table reveals that we are still 6 points clear at the top.

A scout report on Thursday revealed a potential gem - Lee Whittington is currently at hometown club Rotherham , but after making 11 appearances for his hometown club last term, now finds himself on the transfer list, and as the 19-year old is Out of Contract at the end of the season, it looks as if his Millmoor days are coming to an end. After some thought, we launched a bid on Friday - approaching Rotherham to take the attacking midfielder on trial for a fortnight.

The dilemna with taking another attacking midfielder is our current status - Johanssen, Barker and Taylor are all in the squad who play in the same position, and there is some doubt as to weather we need another one, especially a player who operates on the left hand side. Still, hopefully we'll get Lee to the club for a couple of weeks and see what we think of him in person.

FA Cup First Round day brought a couple of shocks - and one incredibly popular one was MK Dons exit at the hands of Staines , while the biggest one came at Borough Park - Workington dumping mighty Preston out with a 2-0 victory. Stanies, of the Ryman League, have a reward for their victory, with a Second Round trip to a side I hold dear to my heart - Brighton & Hove Albion .

Ryan Semple has also hit the headlines, with a callup to the Northern Ireland Under 21's for the game against Croatia .

Maidenhead v Lewes - Conference South Game 12 (07/11/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hankin, Legge, Clarke, Semple, Kennett*, Johanssen, Holligan, Sigire

Subs; Okuonghae, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Barker, Darby

Just one change to the trip to Maidenhead - Sigire back in place of Darby up front. 'Ziggy' hasn't had the best of luck this season, but his efforts last season deserve another chance, and with us hoping to return to winning ways, hopefully the Frenchman will have a point to prove. Although the game took a little while to get going, we started the better side - Preddie making a smart stop from Holligan on 12 before Johanssen fired over the top 6 minutes later. On 22 however Traynor picked up on a long clearance from Legge, bustled through a challenge from Kennett, and played in Laurent Hamici, who slotted past Wilkerson from close range. It was a blow, and we failed to recover from it for the rest of the first half, when Sigire and Johanssen made way at the interval. Maidenhead's defending then became desperate - ex-Rook Fontana throwing himself in front of a Holligan shot, while Darby wasn't too far away moments later. Late sub Bridcutt headed just over the top, and on 78 Darby smacked a header against the crossbar - but it didn't seem things would go our way. Maidenhead held on for a desperate victory, but we had chances, and the result is somewhat disapointing.

The press were, I thought, somewhat kind to us after the game - the Non-League Paper website calling Maidenhead 'lucky', which I think is a little harsh - they played some really neat football at times.

Wednesday morning however sees a newcomer - Lee Whittington looks fairly good in training, but we're still not sure. He's got a couple of weeks to make an impression, however, and the funds are there to bring him in should we choose to.

Kingstonian v Lewes - FA Trophy Second Qualifying Round (11/11/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hankin, Legge, Clarke, Johanssen, Kennett*, Barker, Holligan, Darby

Subs; Okuonghae, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Taylor, Lockett

Duane Darby's back in an attempt to return to winning ways, with Sigire missing out altogether. We've also been forced to drop Semple, who is away on international duty, so Steve Barker comes into the starting eleven. We began well, and on 12, hit the side netting through Holligan - but on 23, Duane Darby opened the scoring with a trademark strike into the bottom corner from Johanssen's pass. A minute later, Gavin Holligan hooked home his 20th of the season after a rebound and only been half cleared - and we were on our way. The goals just kept coming - Duane Darby blasted a third on 28, before Gavin Holligan headed home his strike partner's cross on 36. As if to kill off Kingstonian before the break, Gavin Holligan then secured his hatrick - running on to Legge's pass to thump the ball beyond a hapless Clark. With a double change at the break - Holligan and Clarke making way - we just hoped for more of the same in the second half, and though the goals were less in the second period on a rapidly deterorating pitch, we did grab a sixth - Martin Johanssen meeting Williams' cross with a diving header on 53 to wrap up the victory. The K's were reduced to 10 men on 76 to boot when Moore recieved his marching orders for an off the ball kick on Lockett, but by then it was all over as a spectacle. The win is a good one, progression assured and hopefully this will kickstart us in the League again.

Sunday's FA Trophy Third Qualifying Round draw sees us handed a trip to Molesey - it's a long way to go, and I'm half tempted to throw in a few of the fringe players, but we'll have to wait and see.

Bally Smart returned on Monday from Braintree - with a particularly unsuccessful loan spell under his belt. With the young striker out of Contract at the end of the season, the last thing he needed was to go to Essex and not play for 3 months...

On Tuesday, as Antonio Bryan and Joe Martin returned to the club after their - slightly more successful - loan spells, Ryan Semple bagged his first goal for Northern Ireland's Under 21 side - coming off the bench to score a late equaliser for his country at home to Armenia .

Wednesday's international saw England cruise to a 2-0 win over Hungary , thanks to a Jermaine Defoe brace.

Lewes v Thurrock - Conference South Game 13 (18/11/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hankin, Legge, Clarke, Johanssen, Kennett*, Barker, Holligan, Darby

Subs; Okuonghae, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Taylor, Lockett

We've decided to leave the side unchanged for the visit of Thurrock - despite the availability of Semple, I would find it hard to change a side who won 6-0 just a week ago. We started by far the brighter side, and Holligan headed home on 14 only to see it ruled out by the linesman's flag. No matter - 2 minutes later, Dwain Clarke crossed and this time Gavin Holligan did net with a fine header. Three minutes later, Duane Darby scored with a header from Clarke's corner - his 10th goal of the season, and the Free Transfer signing is beginning to look like a real discovery. Thurrock were in disarray, and a woefully underhit backpass from White on 25 hardly helped - Scott Ward stranded, and Gavin Holligan neatly sidestepped the ex-Rook to bury the ball from just outside the box. Thurrock began the second half in better spirits, having chances through Carthy and Janney, before on 62 Hall put the ball through for Taiwo Aiteno to net with a diving header. Wilkerson then beame the busier of the two 'keepers, but we could have done without an 'adventurous' backpass from the right, when Johanssen played his 'keeper into real trouble. Mat Bailey intercepted, and buried the ball to give the Lakeside-sponsored outfit real hope. Holligan nearly had a chance to make amends, but screwed a volley wide just moments later. Deep into injury time however, as Thurrock pushed forward for an equaliser, they left gaps at the back - and when Johanssen passed to Barker, his neat pass allowed Gavin Holligan to leave his marker in the dust, and bury his 50th goal in a Lewes shirt from close range.

One for the Stats fans - Gavin Holligan has this season scored 25 goals in 16 games - that's the same number as he managed in last season's campaign, but in 30 less appearances. The ex-West Ham and Wycombe front man is on fire, and hopefully we'll be able to keep hold of him. On a similar note, we've also offered Max Hustwick a new contract - Max has become a key part of the squad this season, in contrast to last year where he was considered somewhat unreliable.

On Sunday, however, we recieved a big blow - Gavin Holligan has picked up a cold, and will be out for a few days. He won't be training, as we've sent him home to fully recover from his illness. Meanwhile, Ryan Semple has picked up an ankle injury, and could be out for up to a Month.

Monday, however, brought far better news - Max Hustwick has put pen to paper on a new 3-year contract, signing until the summer of 2009. He looks a superb prospect, and will be a long-term player for the club - a useful bonus to us going into the FA Trophy tie on Saturday. One player who won't be involved though is Lee Whittington - he offers nothing more than we already have, so on Tuesday he returned to Rotherham hoping to ressurect his career in Yorkshire.

Molesey v Lewes - FA Trophy Third Qualifying Round (25/11/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Tanner, Robinson, Hooper, Hankin*, Legge, Okuonghae, Martin, Bryan, Bridcutt, Taylor, Darby, Lockett

Subs; Legge, Wilkerson (GK), Kennett, Johanssen, Sigire

Plenty of changes then for the Trophy trip - as promised - and debuts for Joe Martin and Antonio Bryan, as well as first starts of the season for Tanner, Robinson and Taylor. On a cold and wet afternoon in Merseyside we started well, and when Lockett crossed on 4 minutes, Duane Darby tapped home from close range. On 13, Duane Darby added a second, with Molesey outclassed in every area. The youngsters coming into the side did well, and when Antonio Bryan's piledriver was blocked on the half hour, Duane Darby ran the ball into the net to claim his hatrick. There was nearly a fourth a minute before the break - Hankin's excellent cross headed agonisingly against the upright by man of the moment Darby. He departed at the break for Sigire, and the home side started the second half better as we eased off the pace. After allowing Richards to fire over on 49, Mark Woods threaded the ball through for young Carl Hill to pull one back on 54. The game seemed to drift, rather than fly, to a conclusion - chances few and far between, and in the end we would hold on for a professional and hard-earned victory.

Duane Darby's hatrick has put us in the First Round proper - and also earned a £3000 prize cheque for the victory. Duane, incidentally, has a lot to prove - he initially signed for the club on a one-year deal, so has around 7 months of that remaining. I'm not going to open discussions yet - his age puts me off slightly - but once things are a bit clearer, and when we are more aware of where we will finish this season, we may well begin talks.

Tuesday's lunchtimes FA Trophy First Round draw provided a welcome break from the buildup to the match against Bognor in the evening. It's another away trip - and this time we'll go to Claremont Road, home of Hendon for the match, just 9 days before Christmas. Time certainly flies...

Bognor Regis Town v Lewes - Conference South Game 14 (28/11/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hankin, Legge, Clarke, Johanssen, Kennett*, Barker, Darby, Holligan

Subs; Oukonghae, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Taylor, Sigire

Plenty of changes then for the trip to Bognor - and we certainly want to put to bed the ghosts of the final League game of last season, when we were royally thumped by the Rocks. Gavin Holligan is a late addition - he's recovered from a cold - and there are changes throughout the team, with just Hankin and Darby retaining their places from the eleven who played on Saturday. On a cold, wet evening in West Sussex we attacked from the off - and, much to the delight of those who had travelled from Lewes, took the lead with our first chance - Duane Darby continuing where he left off on Saturday by running onto a Clarke through ball and beating the 'keeper. On 5, it was the turn of Williams to feed the dangerman - but this time, Darby was pulled back. Young Tommy Elphick had to go for the professional foul, but Hankin let him off the hook slightly - blasting his spot-kick wide of the post. We were though all over Bognor, and it was no suprise when Duane Darby headed his second of the game, and 15th of the season, on 17 minutes - Holligan providing the assist with a clever, and unselfish, chip across the box. All of a sudden, the Rocks woke up, and after Bacon had come close, his 31st minute cross provided the assist for Kezie Ibe to power a header beyond the 'keeper at the far post. On 37 however we were back in command - Barker's ball to Hustwick splitting the defence, and his cross was met by Duane Darby to claim his hatrick. Clarke could have added a fourth on the stroke of half time, but blazed over. Things calmed down after the break, but as legs tired, and with the extra man advantage, we began to press again - Darby close to a fourth, before Sean Hankin made up for his penalty miss with a piledriver of a free kick to wrap things up on 62.

Several memos on my desk on Wednesday morning, regarding the futures of several players - Six are out of contract at the end of the season, and for Joe Martin, Bally Smart, Steve Robinson, Chris Taylor, Dean Hooper and Duane Darby there will be mixed emitions - only one, in Darby, could be considered a regular. We'll wait until the other side of Christmas at least before deciding, however.

Lewes v Havant & Waterlooville - Conference South Game 15 (02/12/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hankin, Legge, Clarke, Johanssen, Kennett*, Barker, Darby, Holligan

Subs; Oukonghae, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Taylor, Sigire

An unchanged side then for visit of the side from Hampshire, as we seek to continue the god run that we appear to be back on after the brief 'blip'. The game started in scrappy fashion, with three bookings inside the opening 20 minutes, before things seemed to settle down. On 28, Holligan headed Williams' cross over the top, We were bossing things, and when Clarke crossed for Darby on 44, it looked as if we would take the lead - but unfortunatley for the big striker his header was just a little too high. The second half began slowly, but on 70 we had a golden opportunity to go ahead - Hankin's excellent free kick catching the defence unawares, but Johanssen inexplicably wasted a free header by powering the ball against the post. We recieved a bit of a let off on 73 - Pountney hitting the post for the visitos as the game came alive all of a sudden. Sub Chris Taylor blazed one over as the game drew into it's closing moments, with Mark Robinson seeing red for the visitors on 88 for a second bookable offence. A point it is.

Hmm, I was sure it was in Merseyside. Cheers for reading/replying anyway icon14.gif

Sunday morning, and it looks as if Duane Darby has picked up a flu bug - he'll be out for up to a fortnight, but hopefully sooner than that. With the striker on electric form - he's part of a strike partnership who have thumped an amazing 41 goals between them already this season, it's a bit of a blow.

The rest of the week, however, passed off quietly and without incident - with the competition between Sigire, Lockett and Smart for the striking place in the absence of Duane Darby particularly interesting. It'll be two from three, with one as a sub - meaning one will miss out.

Carshalton v Lewes - Conference South Game 16 (09/12/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hankin, Legge, Clarke, Johanssen, Kennett*, Barker, Lockett, Holligan

Subs; Oukonghae, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Taylor, Sigire

There's no suprise that Bally Smart misses out - Sigire again a sub, with Lockett recalled to partner Holligan up front. We started well, getting plenty of early possession and balls into the box, and Carshalton twice relied on desperate goal line clearances. On 23 however they would be undone - another ball into the box that pinged around eventually fell to Ryan Lockett , who marked his return to action with a well-struck effort that gave 'keeper Searle no chance. We were definatley having the better time of it - Holligan and Lockett both close before the break, but we couldn't build on our advantage before the interval. Carshalton came out stronger though, and within a few minutes, created several chances, Davis having the best when he planted a header straight at Wilkerson from Yiga's cross. A triple change for the home side gave them reknewed vigour laterin the half, and despite us having chances - Barker's shot far too weak - Carshalton levelled on 74 after Hustwick had headed away from Roache, only for Steve Symes to crack the ball back into the roof of the net from 25 yards out. Both sides had late chances for the winner, but equally, both 'keepers were in inspired form, and a draw is a just result.

As we've now reached the FA Trophy First Round proper, there won't necessarily be wholesale changes for the trip to Hendon next weekend.

Duane Darby returned on Wednesday, though he does look a little jaded still - no doubt as a result of that flu bug which has kept him out for around a week. He's a doubt for Saturday. On Thursday though came news that nobody ever expected to hear...

'Lewes in Shock Legend talks'

'Conference South club Lewes are in shock talks with Brazilian legend Romario over a move to the Sussex club. Romario, 40, is currently on the books of Vasco Da Gama in his home nation, but he has been put on the transfer list after falling out with the clubs' management.

Probably best remembered for his brilliant tournement at World Cup 94 in the USA, he is now getting on a bit, but would undoubtedly be one of the biggest transfer coups ever should he go to the Dripping Pan.

Manager Stuart Fairway refused to comment on rumours that the two parties had already met once, with reports coming out of Brazil suggesting the Rooks have just had a second offer for the veteran hitman accepted by Vasco.

Hendon v Lewes - FA Trophy First Round (16/12/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hankin, Legge, Clarke, Bryan, Kennett*, Johanssen, Lockett, Holligan

Subs; Oukonghae, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Barker, Sigire

One change to the Rooks side for the trip to Hendon - Darby still not quite ready for a return, so Antonio Bryan comes in to replace Barker, with Johanssen moving to the centre of midfield. As to be expected the only topic of debate amongst the home support was 'that' announcement on Thursday - Romario at the Rooks? - wake up son... What did settle them down, however, was an early goal - and on 3 minutes, Gavin Holligan provided one, heading home Hankin's flighted free kick. We were by far the better side early on - Clarke, Holligan and Bryan all close before Lockett headed against the post on 43. Two changes at half time, with Williams and Clarke making way for Okuonghae and Barker - and on 47, we made an immediate impact on the second half, with Holligan and Hustwick involved, the latter crossing for Martin Johanssen to drill a rising effort into the roof of the net. Hendon's Davies saw red on 56 for a crude pull on Holligan, and we could have run riot - Kennett and Johnassen both having chances, before late sub Sigire was guilty of poor finishing when he blazed Bryan's cross over from close range. The result is a useful one, and we progress.

£4000 prize-money is a boost, and we'll face either Alfreton Town or Moor Green at home in the Second Round, depending on the result of the replay between the two Conference North clubs.

Monday, meanwhile, did see more talks with a certain Brazilian. Romario doesen't seem interested, but we have offered him a huge wage package to come to Lewes - safe in the knowledge that the publicity generated by the signing, as well as the resulting merchandising sales - not to mention his ability - would be worth it.

While awaiting a reply on Wednesday, coach Ivo Den Bieman travelled northwards to watch Alfreton Town beat Moor Green and win the replay - they will travel to Sussex in January.

Histon v Lewes - Conference South Game 17 (20/12/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hankin, Legge, Clarke, Johanssen, Kennett*, Barker, Darby, Holligan

Subs; Oukonghae, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Taylor, Lockett

Darby returns in attack - still no word, by the way, from Brazil - while Johanssen is also back on the right flank in place of young Antonio Bryan. We flew out of the blocks, with a chance - headed wide by Darby - inside the opening 30 seconds. Histon though are no mugs, and we breathed a collective sigh of relief when Ian Cambridge's 8th minute driven effort flew over the top from just inside the area. With the home side beginning to get a foothold on the game, it was perhaps a suprise on 34 when Legge tapped a free kick sideways to Hustwick, who played a cracking 40-yard pass to beat the offside trap. Gavin Holligan ran on, coolly shimmied to distract 'keeper Barker before slotting the ball into the net. It was a cracking finish, and a very well-made move. After taking the lead, we did begin to impose ourselves on the opposition, and Holligan was close to a second on 44. After the interval the game took a long time to get going - but after Kennett had seen a shot blocked, we did double the lead on 72 - Legge's hopeful ball bobbling through to 'keeper Barker, who made a total hash of it, and Gavin Holligan knocked the ball home after robbing the stopper some 10 yards outside the safety of his area. Late sub Lockett could have added a third - Darby is still clearly a little 'out of it' after a spell out with the flu - but the win was hard earned, and well deserved.

Update 98

The news would come on Thursday - for the second time, Romario has said 'No' to Lewes, and this time, we'll give up on our pursuit of one of football's legendary names. The veteran striker scored over 70 times for Brazil - no mean feat - and he would have been an incredible player to bring to Sussex. Not to be though.

Lewes v Newport County - Conference South Game 18 (23/12/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hankin*, Legge, Taylor, Bryan, Bridcutt, Johanssen, Darby, Holligan

Subs; Oukonghae, Tanner (GK), Kennett, Barker, Lockett

With two days to go before Christmas, and a lot of games coming up in a short period of time, we've made changes - Bryan, Bridcutt and Taylor all called into the starting lineup with Kennett, Johanssen and Clarke rested. We began very well, and after just 4 minutes, Duane Darby nipping onto a Bryan through ball to beat 'keeper Bulman. Two minutes later, Newport's Grimes made a real hash of a clearance - it was a simple job to get to the ball before Darby, but he ran over the ball, allowing the veteran striker to drag the ball away, cut into the area and fire the ball beyond the 'keeper. It was the ideal start, and Newport were poor all over the park - although Leabon wasted an opportunity on 37. On 44 though Holligan broke away, bursting through on goal, only to be hauled back by McGrady. A red should have followed - but didn't - the defender just booked, while Sean Hankin rolled home the penalty kick. The second half began poorly, but when it did get going the Welsh outfit began to get into their stride - Crowe close on 64 before, two minutes later, they pulled one back - Max Hustwick scoring a howler of an own goal when, under pressure, he tried a backpass which beat Wilkerson at his near post. As we tried to regroup, the visitors scored again on 69 - Cortez Belle, on as a sub, meeting Leek's cross with a perfect diving header to really cause panic amongst the home support. Both sides did have chances - Wilkerson making a couple of fine stops - before, 5 minutes from time, Chris Taylor limped off injured, and we completed the dying moments with 10 men. Harder than it needed to be.

It would have been nice, Bob!

Chris Taylor's injury is one that could keep him out for up to a month - Steve Fox has confirmed a twisted knee for the young midfield man, a bit part player this term, although up until his injury, he was doing well on Saturday.

Lewes v Dorchester - Conference South Game 19 (26/12/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hankin, Legge, Clarke, Johanssen, Kennett*, Barker, Sigire, Lockett

Subs; Hooper, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Okuonghae, Holligan

Wholesale midfield changes for the Boxing Day visit of Dorchester - our final home game of 2006. Boxing Day dawned bitterly cold, with a coating of frost for the streets of Lewes. We quickly warmed the Rooks fans up though - Lockett close on 2 minutes before Sigire, Barker and Legge all had chances. On 31 though a goal eventually did arrive - a 55-yard ball from Leon Legge releasing Jean-Michel Sigire who ran through and beat 'keeper Jones with a shot off the post. It was hardly conventional - a long, long ball that Sigire did well to control, but it certainly proved effective. The French striker was bouyed by his goal - twice more before the interval did he have chances to increase our lead. After taking a knock just before the break, and in obvious pain, Dwain Clarke was replaced by Okuonghae at the break - but with our first chance of the second period, we grabbed another - Jean-Michel Sigire again on target, smashing home the rebound after Hankin's free kick came back off 'keeper Jones. The visitors woke up all of a sudden - Howes skidding a shot straight at Wilkerson on 59, before Alex Browne headed home from a Howes corner on 64 to get Mark Morris' men back into the game. On 69, however, the balance of power quickly swung back in our favour - Sigire knocking the ball to Barker, who played a delightful pass through the Dorchester defence for Ryan Lockett to run on and net at the near post. At the other end, Dorchester had chances - Wilkerson making a terrific 85th minute stop from Groves. The victory assured, we shut up shop - and hold on to head towards the New Year in good spirits.

The games are coming thick and fast at the moment - but we'll have to do without Dwain Clarke for around 3 months - the winger has gone to see a specialist regarding the Hip injury he picked up against Dorchester, and it leaves us - especially with Taylor out - a little stretched on the left.

Ryan Semple has resumed training however, but he too is not quite ready for a return just yet.

Eastleigh v Lewes - Conference South Game 20 (30/12/06)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Hooper, Hankin, Legge, Williams, Bryan, Kennett*, Johanssen, Darby, Holligan

Subs; Okuonghae, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Barker, Lockett

Antonio Bryan and Dean Hooper in - Clarke and Barker left out, while up front both strikers are switched - the 'first choice' pairing of Darby and Holligan recalled, with 2-goal hero Sigire left out alltogether. Eastleigh, on their home pitch, began brightly - despite struggling at the foot of the table - and on 9 minutes took the lead when Martin was pushed by Kennett inside the area. Much to the consternation of the travelling supporters, referee Gardner pointed at the spot, and Danny Rofe stepped up to beat Wilkerson, who guessed the right way. Eastleigh continued to pressurise - Mulvaney wasn't too far away on 10 before Dallaway headed wide on 22. On 29 things got worse for us when skipper Kennett went down injured and had to be replaced - young Liam Bridcutt on in his place. The half time teamtalk was an upbeat one, however - I told the players that at 1-0 they had a good chance of winning it. We replaced Holligan with Lockett and immediatley set about the Hampshire opponents - Bridcutt and Darby both shooting over before, on 61, Ryan Lockett got his head on the end of Darby's cross from the left, drawing the scores level with just under a third of the game to play. Both sides were going at it hammer and tongs - in the last 10 minutes, Angiletta having a shot blocked by Wilkerson, before, with the stadium clock showing 91 minutes, we won it - Darby and Johanssen combining, with the Swede's cross-shot falling to Antonio Bryan , who picked the ideal time to net his first goal in a Lewes shirt since his summer arrival from Manchester United. Superb timing!

It's going nicely at the moment Bob, Cheers icon_smile.gif

New Year's Eve - and Duane Darby , has, after a brilliant performance against Eastleigh where he never stopped running, has signed a year's extension to his contract, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2008. Duane has worked really hard since signing for the club, and fully deserves an extended deal - taking him to 'Footballing Pensioner' status, and nearly at his 36th birthday.

We also recieved a big boost in the form of a sale - for second placed Dorchester . Top scorer Matt Groves has made a huge £275,000 move to Swindon Town , with the 26-year old striker describing the offer as a move that he 'couldn't refuse'.

Lewes v Bishop's Stortford - Conference South Game 21 (01/01/07)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Hooper, Hankin*, Legge, Barker, Semple, Okuonghae, Johanssen, Darby, Holligan

Subs; Robinson, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Bryan, Lockett

More changes for New Year's Day - Barker, Semple and Okuonghae all coming into the starting lineup. With the game being played in close to gale-like conditions, play was initially scrappy - Holligan not far away with an early header for us, while at the other end, Edwards wasted Bishop's only real chance by slashing at a shot on the volley which flew over the Philcox Stand and ended up in the car park. Two changes at the break saw Bryan replace Johanssen and Lockett on for Holligan, but things continued in much the same vein. We were definatley on top however, with the weather conditions not seeming to affect the voice of the combined Rooks support, encouraging as always. Darby hit the side netting, but on 74, we got the goal that we deserved - a good ball from Barker meeting the head of Ryan Lockett , who lunged in to put the ball past 'keeper Gay from just inside the six-yard box. With the pitch not the best, and legs tiring, we seemed to shut up shop - a hard fought, but well-deserved, victory.

Tuesday morning, and an offer has been accepted by Brighton & Hove Albion for young defender Joel Lynch . We're not the 19-year old's only suitors, but I do feel we could do with cover at the back, and a player who can operate on the left or in the centre of defence would be a versatile addition to the squad. Our offer - a free transfer - was accepted almost immediatley after we placed it, after having Scout Jamie Irvine check the player out for a couple of months beforehand. It's now up to Joel, as Newport County and Histon have also emerged as rivals for the defender's signature.

Lewes v Billericay - Conference South Game 22 (06/01/07)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hankin*, Legge, Barker, Bryan, Bridcutt, Johanssen, Darby, Holligan

Subs; Robinson, Tanner (GK), Okuonghae, Sigire, Lockett

Ziggy and Lockett both on the bench - while in midfield, Bryan returns in place of Semple and Bridcutt is also back to replace Okuonghae. The Essex side took the kickoff - and within 17 seconds, took the lead to boot. Thorne passed to Barcham, and from 30 Yards the ex-Spurs youngster drove a hopeful shot that hit the inside of the post and went in before a Lewes player had touched the ball. Fortunatley, with our first attack, we equalised - Gavin Holligan robbing 'keeper Stephen Robertson as he ran out of the box to control Hankin's long ball, leaving the stopper looking more than a little silly before planting the ball in the net from the edge of the area. Holligan was by far our biggest threat, but at the other end, Gary Smith could well have given the visitorsthe lead on 29 - Wilkerson acrobaticaly tipping his header over the bar. Holligan hit the side netting on 34, while Darby fired over on 42, but on 44, Martin Johanssen expertly threaded the ball through for Gavin Holligan to run on and beat the diving Robertson from close range. Immediatley after the break - in which we made a couple of changes - Billericay came close - Muirhead's close range miss something of a let off for us. Johanssen then went on to waste a couple of chances, while sub Sigire hit the side netting on 77 - but Billericay never gave up, and two minutes from time, Graham Tydeman got on the end of a free kick to head the ball beyond Wilkerson and claim a point for Justin Edingburgh's men. A draw is definatley the fairest result from one of the most open, and even, encounters we've had all season.

Gavin Holligan's brace brings him up to 30 for the season - an amazing record, given that he has played just 25 games so far. He's dropped off the pace a little in recent weeks, but a brace on Saturday proves that the big hitman is still our major goalscoring threat.

Saturday also brings FA Cup Third Round day - and after several big shocks last season, this year's is more anticpated than ever before. Unfortunatley, only one Non-League side reached this stage in the competition this season - with Hereford going out 2-1 to Birmingham City . As it was, the big shock came at Loftus Road - QPR dumping holders West Bromwich Albion out of the competition after a 3-0 victory. Struggling Everton needed an injury time winner against Luton , but while both Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United progress, Chelsea will have a replay at Stamford Bridge against Crewe .

Monday's Fourth Round draw was perhaps kindest to League One outfit Torquay , who will host Everton in what's been described as 'Plainmoor's biggest game in years'. Chairman Mike Bateson will no doubt be looking forward to the gate reciepts for the game, which is expected to sell out.

Before we set off for Essex to face second-placed Braintree on Tuesday evening, we learned that Joel Lynch has chosen to move from Sussex to Wales - he'll leave the Albion and join Newport County in a £1000 deal.

Braintree v Lewes - Conference South Game 23 (09/01/07)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Hooper, Hankin*, Legge, Williams, Semple, Okuonghae, Johanssen, Darby, Holligan

Subs; Robinson, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Sigire, Lockett

Changes for the midweek trip in what will be a tough game - Hooper, Semple and Okuonghae coming in, with Barker, Bryan and Bridcutt all rested. We started well, with Darby hitting the side netting, but on 9, a fantastic stop from Wilkerson was needed to keep us level. The game continued, much like that - ebbing and flowing, with both sides having chances, but not enough to create a decent opening. After a quiet half time encouragment for a team talk, we started the second half in similar fashion - but on 81, Braintree sub Joe Flurry got on the end of a cross, and glanced the ball beyond Wilkerson. It seemed as if our hard work had been in vain - but perhaps not. 2 minutes later, Jean-Michel Sigire , on as a sub, got his head on the end of Max Hustwick's free kick, putting the ball beyond 'keeper Murphy to rescue a point. It wasn't the best of games, but as I said to the boys at the end, a 1-1 draw away at the team who lie second in the League is a very useful result. We'll enjoy the journey back, safe in the knowledge that we've picked up a very useful point.

Wednesday morning, and the big news comes from just down the A27. Not content with taking Brighton & Hove Albion to the top of League One, Mark McGhee has moved back to Scotland - to take the job as manager of Dunfirmline Athletic . With the Albion running through my veins, and a new stadium at Falmer on the horizon, I've - with the backing of Terry Parris, who would earn some substantial compensation from the Seagulls - thrown my hat into the ring.

By Friday afternoon, thoughts returned to Lewes - and a transfer offer. Chris Taylor has done well since his arrival, but has hardly been a regular, and a £5000 bid - plus 40% of any sell-on - from Mansfield Town is on the table for the ex-Swindon midfield man. Out of contract at the end of the season, we've decided to accept the offer, which, although will leave us a little strapped for midfield options, is a good deal for a plyer not certain to be retained at the end of the season.

Lewes v Alfreton Town - FA Trophy Second Round (13/01/07)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hankin*, Legge, Barker, Bryan, Bridcutt, Johanssen, Darby, Holligan

Subs; Hooper, Tanner (GK), Okuonghae, Sigire, Lockett

The usual midfield changes are in place - Bryan earning a recall on the right with Barker also brought back into the lineup. Williams replaces Hooper, who drops to the bench, at left back, and despite his heroics, Sigire is still a substitute with Darby and Holligan in attack. With the match kicking off in strong winds, anything could happen - and the end to end start of the match showed that. Within 17 seconds, Wilkerson had been called on to make a save whilst at the other end, less than 2 minutes later, Holligan headed against the bar. On 17 however Barker crossed after a ball from Bridcutt, and although Darby's shot was blocked, Gavin Holligan slammed home the loose ball from close range to put us ahead. 3 minutes later, Gavin Holligan got in on the act again - Barker winning the ball on half way, before slipping it to Darby, who in turn passed through to strike parner Holligan, who made no mistake from close range. We totally bossed the first period - Johanssen, Barker and Bridcutt all having chances before the interval. Bryan made way for Lockett soon after the hour - Nwadike's shot that Wilkerson did well to tip wide inspiring the change - but on 75, a long ball from Legge caused real trouble in the Alfreton defence, and Duane Darby ran on to plant the ball past 'keeper Smith from the edge of the box. Alfreton were spent - undone by a lack of travelling support, but mainly by some mecurial passing and shooting from our front pair - and when Johanssen saw one charged down, Gavin Holligan sidefooted home from the edge of the area as the ball broke loose to him with the clock showing 89, sending the Rooks fans back to their cars and homes very happy indeed.

Going great guns d_s, and good to see a lower league side with so many scoring options - Holligan and Darby look like they make up well for eachother when one loses form.

I remember Holligan in the Prem in my CM3 days... but that's another story icon_smile.gif

Cheers flippers - they make a good duo definatley

The £5000 prize money for progression to the next round of the Trophy is tempered by the booking picked up by Duane Darby , which will see him miss Wednesday's game against Basingstoke through suspension - the big striker having picked up 5 yellow cards since his arrival at The Dripping Pan.

While Paul Kennett returned on Monday, our attention was focused on the last 16 draw for the FA Trophy - and we came out of the hat first, given a home game against Conference South rivals Weston-Super-Mare .

Meanwhile on Tuesday Chris Taylor made up his mind, joining another ex-Conference South 'face', former Histon boss Steve Fallon , at Mansfield. Still no word from Dick Knight ...

Lewes v Basingstoke - Conference South Game 24 (17/01/07)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Williams, Hankin, Legge, Barker, Semple, Kennett*, Johanssen, Sigire, Holligan

Subs; Okuonghae, Tanner (GK), Bridcutt, Bryan, Lockett

Semple is back in, as is Kennett after his ban. Sigire starts in place of the banned Darby, but otherwise, we are unchanged - Bryan making way for the Northern Irishman on the right. The visitors set about us, beginning by far the better side, and after early threats, took the lead when Ray's cross was nodded home by Mark Peters on 13. Up until that point, we had been awful - but on 18, Hustwick beat Stamp to a loose ball and crossed for Jean-Michel Sigire to bundle the ball over the line. It had been a good start for both teams - Peters and Ogbodo also close for the visitors as they tried to regain the lead. At half time we reorganised, replacing Barker with Okuonghae, and moving Williams to the left wing role. As we entered the second period, chances continued to come for both sides - Holligan and Ogbodo in particular revelling in the roles of target man for either side. On the hour, Johanssen came close as we began to get on top, and then, finally, on 71 minutes Gavin Holligan raced onto Sigire's interception and subsequent pass before beating Rice from just inside the area. At the other end Peters and, in particular, Ogbodo were both close again - and with 9 minutes remaining, the big Nigerian equalised - Uwabunkeone Ogbodo firing home after Hustwick had deflected a Williams cross into his lethal path. All in all, a very even game between two good, hard working sides, ended in a useful point apiece.

With word from the Withdean still to come - either positive or negative - regarding the appointment of a new manager at Brighton & Hove Albion , life in Lewes continued much as it had done for the rest of the season. A quiet few days, although Paul Kennett, Ryan Semple and Gavin Holligan are beginning to look a little tired - symptomatic, no doubt, of the many games we've played in recent weeks.

Lewes v Welling - Conference South Game 25 (20/01/07)

Lewes; 4-4-2; Wilkerson, Hustwick, Hooper, Hankin*, Legge, Williams, Bryan, Bridcutt, Barker, Sigire, Darby

Subs; Okuonghae, Tanner (GK), Kennett, Johanssen, Lockett

Johanssen's also due a rest, so the Swede is amongst the substitutes, whilst Bryan, Bridcutt and, after his ban, Darby all return to the starting eleven. The game began slowly, but gradually we pushed the visitors back, forcing Ibrahim into a save on 12 before Darby flashed a half volley into the side netting soon after. On 23 Hustwick's ball down the line to Darby provided another opportunity, and this time, Jean-Michel Sigire made the most of it - outjumping Gledhill to head us into the lead. We almost added a third in unusual style on 35 - a bicycle kick from a corner isn't that uncommon, but when Sean Hankin hit the side netting, some sections of the Rooks support thought they'd seen the goal of the season, until Ibrahim picked the ball up and placed it for the goal kick. At the other end, ex-Arsenal winger Adrian Clarke seemed to link up well with Che Stadhart, and Wilkerson was forced into a smart stop just before the break. Lockett replaced Williams at the interval as we strove to increase our lead, and after plenty of chances, we did just that on 74 - Antonio Bryan's excellent, flighted pass releasing Jean-Michel Sigire for a shot past 'keeper Ibrahim into the corner. The second came just as Welling we starting to build, and really seemed a hammer blow to their chances - although a nervy finish was ensured when Steve Molyneux scrambled the ball home from a corner on 81. Wilkerson fortunatley held a Lawrence header 4 minutes later, and that was the London side done - another victory. Are you watching, Mr Knight?

A suprise on Sunday came with a big from Bognor Regis Town for Joe Martin - the young winger signed from Spurs in the summer, but has made just one appearance for the club, that in the early stages of the FA Trophy . Their offer of £1000, plus 40% of any future sell-on, is certainly one that we'll take - Joe wouldn't have got a contract at the end of the season anyway, on current form, and it will be welcome cash for a player who we signed on a free transfer.

Albion Set To Name Boss Today

Ian Hart Reports

Brighton & Hove Albion chairman Dick Knight has told The Argus that his 'Number One Target' to replace Mark McGhee as manager will be approached today - and that he has already been in negociations with the as-yet unnamed manager's current club.

Should this turn out to be true, expect a full report in this evening's edition of the Argus, available all over the city.

A few minutes before midday, there was a knock on my office door. I answered, to see Chairman Terry Parris standing there, looking flustered. His request was quick, and to the point - could I follow him to the boardoom.

I had an inkling of what could be about to happen when I glanced out of the window and saw a black Mercedes in the car park, with the Registration number 'DK A1'. When I opened the door of the boardroom, I was under no illusions. Seated was Dick Knight - and with him, Chief Executive Martin Perry . Terry ushered me to a seat, and I sat down - accepting his offer of a glass of Whiskey.

Terry began, telling me that Dick had made him an offer of compensation, and that while he would be very sorry to see me leave the club, he would understand if I did choose to make the move to the club I have supported since childhood. At least he seemed clear on it - and when Dick Knight spoke, I realised exactly what my choice was. A 3-Year contract as manager of Brighton & Hove Albion - with £600 a week for myself, a club wage budget of £26,500 a week, and a £1.5 Million transfer budget. The contract would take me up to the summer of 2010 - and would begin immediatley.

While thanking Dick for the opportunity, I first turned to Terry Parris - this would need some thought. Not much, admitedly, but enough time for me to have a quick walk around the stadium, and talk to my staff. The request was granted - and I set off for the players tunnel with my heart pounding like a drum.

The walk at least cleared my head - the last remnants of the morning's frost were disapeering from the pitch, with Roger, the Groundsman, already on duty - giving the posts a lick of paint and meddling with his beloved mower. He waved, cheerily, before shouting "Not gone yet, then?" in my direction. I laughed - a nervous, but excited laugh - "Not yet", I replied. He stopped playing with engines and walked in my direction, as I walked onto the pitch. We met somewhere inside the penalty box, at the Philcox Stand end. Almost simeltaniously, we both turned - the boardroom window visible, with Terry Parris, Dick Knight and Martin Perry standing around, near the window - often casting glances towards us, but seemingly deep in their own conversation.

"What do you think?" I asked the cheery groundsman.

"What have they offered?" he replied.

I told him. In an instant, he replied. "Up to you. Great opportunity. Might not come again. Doing well this season - both us and the Albion - I reckon, go or stay, and you have a good chance of promotion. Your call.

I said my farewells to Roger, and in that instant, he became the first person to know my decision. I would take the job. I walked back into the main stand, through the bar and up the stairs. I gulped hard, and knocked on the oak door. Terry opened it, with a smile. I again took my place - only to stand up almost instantly. The words seemed to fall out, rather than be said with any sort of power or purpose - but they were unmistakeable.

"Mr Knight"

"Please", he urged, "Call me Dick".

"Dick", I corrected myself. "Dick, It's a great honour to be asked to manage the Albion - as I mentioned, I have always been a huge fan since childhood - and it would be the ideal opportunity at this stage in my career"

I looked at his face while I talked. He was expecting a 'but'. None came.

"And I'd be delighted to sign the contract, I can't wait to start"

This time, his face beamed - He offered his hand, and I shook it warmly - I was going to manage 'my' club - and with a superb opportunity to boot. £1.5 million to spend - the possibility excited me a great deal. There was, however, one more task at Lewes before I could take the job. With Dick and Martin heading out to the car, I embraced Terry Parris - if there is one man who deserves his clubs' success, it's Terry - it's down to his backing that I got into Football Management in the first place, and he handed me control of his club as a (very) raw rookie. He stood by me through the bad times, and I can honestly say that we never had a crossed word.

I then went down to the rec room - talked to each member of my staff individually, and then said goodbye. The players, of course, were conspicuous by their absence - all part timers, so all at work. They - if they didn't pick the news up for themselves through local radio or The Argus, would find out at this evening's training session. With the Mercedes growling impatiently in the car park, I cast a glance over my shoulder, looking at the Dripping Pan surface, with Roger still out there, still making sure everything was just as he wanted it. The new manager, whoever he turns out to be, will inherit a great bunch, from Boardroom to Bootroom.

7.10PM

"Seagulls Go For Fairway"

Brighton & Hove Albion have today appointed Stuart Fairway as manager in succession to Mark McGhee , who left earlier this month to join Dunfirmline in Scotland.

Fairway, 31, has spent the afternoon meeting his new charges at The Withdean Stadium, and is set to take charge for the first time on Saturday, when Doncaster come to Sussex. Fairway joins Brighton from Conference South table-toppers Lewes , where he cut his managerial teeth - a side who he guided to the Conference South Playoff final last season, only to be denied promotion on penalties - but the Rooks began this season very well, and are in pole position, 10 points clear of the second placed outfit, Forest Green Rovers .

Lewes captain Paul Kennett talked to BBC Sport about Fairway's departure. "We're all gutted" he said. "Of course it's a massive opportunity for Stuart though, and we are all pleased for him, but it will be very strange without him around the club"

Fairway is thought to have signed a 3-Year contract as Brighton manager, and will take up his post with immediate effect.

And there you have it - my first completed FM06 story. I'm going to wrap the game up here - from reading other threads I believe that there is a problem with hard-coded future stadiums, in that they don't get used for all matches. If this does happen, it'll annoy me and I'll probably loose interest, so I felt it far better to wrap this up now than go through that. For the record, I won my first game as Albion manager 4-3 against Doncaster icon_cool.gif

Hope you've enjoyed it, I certainly have icon14.gif
