The debate about STEAM has been had many times, and I can't comment on backpackants specific issue, but the majority of issues with it stem from the whole activation debacle, and the mistaken belief that STEAM was the cause (it wasn't, Uniloc was). My experience of STEAM has been wholly positive. I don't even sign into it except when there's a new patch, and then I get it automatically in no time at all. It's a joy for me.
