Always hard to say exactly what is happening without seeing the tactic and your players live, but the xG alone shows you aren’t creating quality chances.

Running the numbers quickly, 18 shots and 1.84 xG means an average of 0.1 xG per shot. Assuming you had a few 0.2 or maybe a 0.3 chances, the bulk of your shots are much lower.

Compare it to Charlton who have 0.15 xG per shot, it seems small and you were definitely unlucky to lose 4-0, but that’s a 50% increase on your average.

Are your players shooting from outside the area or from odd angles? Or if in the box crowded out by defenders? When you’re playing such an aggressive setup like your 4-2-3-1, you need to think about player movement much more. Is the CF(S) meant to be a creator? If so who is scoring the goals? I only see the Shadow Striker who will reliably move ahead of him. The IF(S)’s will occasionally bomb forward but their instinct will be to get involved in the buildup and take long shots when they find space.

As for the 4-3-3, I’m not sure what you’re trying to achieve. It’s aggressive without being overly committed to attacking. It looks like it could be a counter tactic but the movement on the wings is far too basic with both wide forwards cutting in. When a natural counter attack occurs, your wings are essentially vacated in the transition.

The Xg really isn't a good representation of what I saw, which were several one on ones against their keeper, shots blasted over the bar or smacked straight at a defender, loose ball not picked up etc.

The shots are a mix of inside and outside the area, and I do account for the odd stupid piece of heroics from 30 yards, but a lot of the chances  are pretty close range. The opposition do tend to get a lot of players back in the box, which I have found someone of a work around by upping the tempo and making the passing more direct.

As for the thoughts behind the tactics - Quite a lot of advice says that support role IF's are still goal scorers, but with attacking mentality they will waste good chances with aggressive shots, which I did see some of so set them to support. The Shadow striker is a big threat, getting a lot of chances which he then likes to kick straight at a defender. The complete forward is doing what I want him to, which is basically wonder around and be everywhere, which he wasn't doing as a false 9.

The 433 works fine except for the lack of goal scoring mentioned.

Generally, the team plays as I would want and expect them too, and they play well, just can't score and don't make the most of the chances they have.

Have you tried to Lower the tempo slightly and work ball into box?

I did have a lower tempo, this just let the opposition pull all their players back before my team could get a good attack in. Work ball into the box just allows the same, and my team is weaker so such things just gives them ample opporunity to give the ball away.

  2. I am running two different tactics and both have been having the same problem for over a season now - they get plenty of chances, win on Xg but can't score to save their lives. The Inside Forwards always blast it over the goal like they are trying to hit the moon and the center forward always makes the opposition goalie look like some kind of unstoppable hero. At the same time, the other teams either can't miss or sneak in a lucky goal.

For one season I suspect this was the low quality of my team, but I've upgraded them now, and they play better but with the same outcomes.

This is a stats screen from a match I lost 4-0, but shows a fairly typical story (my team is Blackpool). The shots on target isn't a fair reflection of the amount of good chances they had:

Morale is pretty high, as is squad cohesion. I've waited for things to balance out and return to the mean, but at this point I am starting to feel like the game is bugged or simply just has it in for me. I'll take any suggestions at this point!

  3. From a tactical perspective, watch the game in extended or even comprehensive highlights and look for trends and tendencies over time - for example, do your attacks get bogged down on the edge of the area or what ever. If the same sort of thing keeps happening, then that's something you can tweak, but as said above, don't over do the adjustments otherwise it turns to chaos.

Beyond the game itself, there seems to be a lot of factors that can go into why the team do well or not that I don't entirely understand and aren't entirely clear. Even the match engine stuff is not always obvious.

You are winning the league, so it maybe that such a weak team as you were playing chose to shut you out of the game and wait for a lucky counter attack. They could also have better intangibles, such as form etc going into the game that you can't do anything about.

Also, it's one defeat and you are top of the table. It does happen to the best of them from time to time. Maybe your team were wearing grey jerseys or something.

  4. Hi all,

I may have seen a thread on this, but can't find it (and I think it got closed anyway), but I am trying to get a better idea of what the passing range and tempo settings actually do, because I think it's not obvious or intuitive from the description, and I am starting to wonder if they maybe two of the most important setting in the tactics screen.

Tempo would imply something to do with speed and energy, but what I think is actually the case is it's more about 'aggressiveness', so a high tempo setting really means a more attacking approach (ie. an attacking vs defensive mentality).

Passing similarly doesn't actually seem to me short passes versus long balls. Pass it shorter seems to actually play out as the team making more conservative passes and keeping possession, whilst more direct seems to mean going for more progressive passes, not necessarily long ones.

Does this match other people experiences? Is it essentially the old mentality setting hidden with two innocuous sliders?

How do you guys adapt to the opposition adapting to you? My team crumbled in our last 10 games as the opposition were all playing 4-3-3 with IFB/IWBs to suffocate the middle, and sitting deep to prevent my AF having space.

I've been playing as a team who were touted for mid-table/top half but we were in with a chance of Europa League/maybe 4th, but fell apart and finished 10th. I was moving between balanced and positive depending on who we were playing, but seemed to always start terribly when on positive.

     image.png.247b2804e419277e3bdc7e1fae160c53.png

At a guess, I would say playing narrower and playing out of defence is what is giving the opposition the time and space to 'suffocate' your team, and the tactic alread seems to have a lack of width anyway - the WB or W on attack might help open things up. A more experienced player will know better, but from my on experiences I think that might be what is happening.

  6. Usually I just focus on getting the team I am at promoted, or at least over achieving. This tends to draw interest from teams in a higher league who come along and poach me.

The other thing to do is to keep an eye out for mid-season openings in teams in the bottom half of the league above you and make the odd application, but as others have said and as you have intuited, don't spam the job applications!

In short, keep doing well in your current job, pick your next job well and your meteoric rise will take care of itself.

These are fun saves to do, and allow you to be a bit more brutal about dumping under achieving players and bringing in improvements. You have to manage with ambition, pragmatism and ruthlessness.

For what it's worth, this is indirectly addressed for next years game with the transition to the Unity Game Engine. It'll offer the developers a significant increase in ability to replicate and display the underlying numbers graphically.

That's good, look forward to seeing how it turns out! This has been a bit of an issue in one way or another since the 90s! I was having a go at CM97/98 the other week for fun, and I was amazed at how the visual match engine today is pretty much just a depiction of the old text commentary from CM2. I'd be curious to know how much old code is kicking around in the current versions of the game.

Anything is worth a try, but I will say, if more players than I are having similar trouble with a lone striker setup, and we each a tactically astute, there must be something wrong with the way the roles are setup in the game itself. For example, the advanced forward does not behave as said in its description, and that description hasn't changed for many iterations of FM now.

None of the roles really match the descriptions anymore, which is one part of the problem. None of the info the game gives us  really tells us what is going on. On top of that, it's never clear what is exactly going wrong in the match engine, it just throws up the same markers of some sort of 'problem' - suddenly players can't pass the ball properly; strikers get loads of chances but miss them all or hit the cross bar; the AI will not get a shot on goal all game then win 1-0 from a set piece or penalty etc. And the solution isn't always tactical either, it could be bad morale, an unhappy player, team cohesion or something like that.

So I'd say there is something 'wrong', and it's the way the match engine and UI represent the numbers underneath the system, but I don't think there is much SI can do about that, though it is time they did a review of all the text descriptions in the game.

  9. I've been finding in my games that it the lone striker is very reliant on how high up the defensive line is, and how high the press is. For example, an AT on a high press tactic gets far to isolated, wondering all the way up the pitch away from the midfield, or on a mid block a DLF or F9 can sometimes be too bunched up with the team on the half way line whilst the opposition pulls all it's players back.

When the striker stops scoring or being involved, I suspect that the AI has 'adjusted' (certainly not cracked!) the tactic you are using, and it might be worth playing around with those elements at first.

  10. The problem is that it's not always clear or intuitive why things happen. The match engine isn't perfect, which is fine, but sometimes it does feel like it's out to get you for no reason, like your cohesive team who've been playing 433 and winning all season suddenly can't pass the ball without giving it away, or every shot hitting the cross bar. And then you change one thing, like an IW(s) into and IF(s) and it all seems to be 'fixed'.

Often times the same thing seems to happen, which gives the impression of the game being scripted, which is likely not the case. It's just the way the game represents all the numbers being crunched in the code, but when your players always seem to give away a penalty in the last ten minutes after a 0-0 game in which they were dominating, it feels like something is up.

  11. The Youth Challenge thread completely blows away any idea that developing youth is pointless in this game. If anything it is too easy - the class of '92 was a freak occurrence that doesn't happen very often, and as someone has pointed out in this thread, it is incredibly rare any youth players in any academy will ever be anything other that a future sports coach or something. If they manage to get a few years in the Vanerama regionals, they were probably the most successful kid in their class.

If it requires "handholding" to setup the game correctly the game has some serious accessibility issues.

That depends on what you want from the game. I think the game should be a bit hidden, otherwise people will just min-max it and then complain it's too easy...

To follow on to this discussion, I play the game on and off over years, and don't follow actually football, so there is a lot of I have to learn or relearn every time I start a save. A proper explanation of what I am doing when setting up the game world is not handholding, and is definitely not something I want to 'discover'. It is not clear at all what would make a 'balanced' game world, or one that would suit a long term LLM save or whatever. I've heard that having a database that's too large just causes a glut of players and destroys the transfer market, on the other hand having a database that is too small will ramp up everyone's price. But what is a large or small database anyway? Does that mean total number of players, or whether I have chosen the 'large database' option? Is it players per team loaded etc. etc.

Stuff like this should be better explained, especially by this point when the game is over 30 years old.

To be fair, with that lovely golden mane, Mats probably wants to leave Lidingo to pursue the inevitable life of model and all around hunk that awaits him. David Ginola will have nothing on that kid!

  13. I want to add to the pile on for the addition of the Cypriot leagues, not just because they would be interesting and so on as other people have said, much better than I could, and not only because I am half-Cypriot, but, from a business point of view, there are quite a lot of us in the diaspora, almost as many Cypriots live world wide as in Cyprus itself, on top of which it's a huge tourist destination with loads of, mainly British, expats, so I figure there has to be some sort of reasonable market for it out there.

  14. One of the things I love about the (once owned by SI!) Out of the Park Baseball series was the option to build completely unique universes with customized leagues and randomly generated players, and also to load up historical databases and play out historical eras etc.

I doubt there is much call for this in Football Manager, but if your going to have a suggestions forum I'm going to give suggestions, and think it would be a great feature to let people build fictional football worlds with truly random players and customizable leagues and rules.

Also, I am not sure how possible it would be with licensing issues, but it would be great to see SI utilize the 30 years of player data to allow historical leagues. Re-live Ferguson's early 00s United, or try to emulate The Invincibles etc. I'm sure there'd be a market for that, even if the cup and league names needed to be fudged a little be (UFEA Mug Winners Cup, please!).

    A

  15. I don't follow football and haven't done for years, so every time I play it might as well be 'fake' players. It is an aspect I wish SI would make more of - incorporate some full on fantasy universe stuff like Out of the park Baseball with custom leagues etc, and maybe even use all the old data they've gathered over the last 30 years to allow historical starts (I'd love a crack at the Cup Winners Cup!). I doubt there is much call for it though.

As I understand it, the 'fake' players option at present just changes the names and not much else.

  16. I've been experiencing similar to the OP for many years in this game. I have come to the conclusion it's a combination of a few things; it seems to take quite a bit of time for a new club to 'settle in' when you take over, which is even more apparent in recent years with all the squad dynamic stuff, on top of which it always seems to take a while for the team to 'get' the tactics you are using. Usually you have to just plow through it, and accept there are 'hidden' aspects to the players, like the one with great attributes always playing like a donkey, and occasionally that guy who has no talent who seems to get a 7.5 rating every game.

Also, I think there are times when a team of good players just don't combine in the right way, on top of which the AI is a bit stupid, so inheriting their squad several years into a game can be a bit of a shocker.

This is all fair enough, and realistic. However, the problem I find with FM is that it plays out so unintuitively in the match engine. Sure, the team aren't used to me or the tactics, but that suddenly means everyone just wants to boot the ball up the field instead of passing it around or something. And when a tactic isn't quite right, the whole team seems to play like they have no clue, then suddenly changing one guy from support to attack or something and they are geniuses. Basically, the game doesn't make it very easy to understand what isn't working tactically, and it can be frustrating.

Ok lets take that real world example.

Rangers last sale of the transfer window was Glen Kamara(28), who they bought for around 50k 5y prior and sold to Leeds for 5M.

Now offcours, PL/championship money inflates this, but the original point stands. The AI asking you to break even on a player where you are not the asking party, is ludicrous. That has nothing to do with being in hungary, being able to see the potential or whatever.

If this transfer would have gone through, Juventus and MTK would probably be investigated by their respective FA's (kinda ironic its juventus, giving irl events).

And to people saying "you dont need to accept this offer", its borderline impossible to negotiate with the AI as they lock demands or blow up negotiations very fast

Real world examples are a bit hard for me, I don't follow the game anymore, though it seems Kamara was a busted youth prospect by the time Rangers took a chance on him and re-found his potential before flipping him at the peak of his career to a Championship level team for a reasonable sum. In the OP's example, he has a world class youth prospect he paid 16million for, which in itself is arguably unrealistic for a team in Hungary.

From one perspective, the OP overpaid for a prospect, and depending on the stats the player has achieved in a mediocre division, might be worth 'only' 10 million to Juventus. Perhaps the OP just made a bad deal? It happens.

I also think the AI can be infuriating, but at the same time just because you think a player is worth a certain amount, it doesn't mean the AI must agree, just as in real life.

"I'm still here ..." Earl of Grey

The year 2053 - Age Earl of Grey 71

Guess they found no replacement. It's a flashback from the first 20 years, a horrible season with a lot of defeats, with penalties against us in every single game. The board put some extra challenges like improving the dressing room atmosphere and the Earl just focused on that. Losing or winning didn't matter anymore. He talked to his players every single game. He praised for goals, he criticized for playing badly, he praised conduct, hold team meetings and the team met every week for breakfast and stuff (team bonding). It worked as he won a new contract. The Earl will go down to EFL2 and build new. A lot of players have to leave us, due to lacking quality like Millie Potter (good bye ol' chap) or James Beckett our spirited captain. Some because of relegation release clauses, some due to greed. The club is now big red, the adventure has cost some money but also full of eager youngsters. The U18s won the double.

Player of the year: Chris Griffith "If everything around you is dark, look again, you may be the light." He scored some winners and equalizers, he was always positive and reliable. The 25 yo even managed to grind out some points in attributes. He is now the successor of Mr Ricay of guys like Rhys Platt, Inih Sole, Tyrone Roberts and our lazy jumper the icon John Flannery. Earl of Grey on the other hand became a club legend and rightly so.

"The King is dead. Long live the king!"

The highs and lows! Billericay are really on a journey, at least you kept your job to keep things going!

  19. For the OP it kind of makes sense - A young player in a middling league with just one continental class team, with interest only shown from one club who did at least offer a percentage of next sale clause. No matter who he is he's not going to get a huge offer in that situation. Imagine if Messi or someone (I don't follow football, fill in 'world's best player' of your choice here) has spent the first part of his career playing for Glasgow Rangers or something (which is perhaps being generous to the Hungarian division). Maybe if several teams want him, but in that case several have mentioned that in those cases the price gets driven up, and in this case maybe only Juventus need a player in that position, and maybe their scouting team don't have an editor to see just how good his potential is.

As for the world being too static, it makes sense enough if you think about it. England is a big rich country, so are France & Spain, they will always attract rich footballers and rich football clubs. For a small nation, the difficulty of making it 'big' is baked into it's size and geography. I could see the MLS becoming the biggest league in the world, but I doubt Hungary or Denmark or wherever ever could. Are the transfers unrealistic? Maybe, but it's also pretty unrealistic that a world class youngster would bury himself in Hungary, or that a non-league team will go from the VNS to the CL in 10 years playing in it's 6,000 seater stadium.

Not that some of the stuff that goes on in game isn't infuriating, it is. But it's a game and there is only so much the developers can do, especially whilst keeping it reasonably fun to play.

Sadly not, I always start unemployed and try and work my way up job hopping and the like. I don't think I have the stomach for a youth challenge run, though reading this thread has made me change my approach to the youth teams and I am trying to make better use of the youth intake.

I am, however, tempted to try it now.
