Bumper update! Still off work due to injury (I'll be fine), so smashing out FM for many hours a day while on paid leave and on bed rest. Lovely stuff.

2038/39 Season Review - The Last Dance

Going into this season I felt like it was the final hurrah of my existing squad before some upheaval was needed... I wanted to get as much as we we could out of it.

La Liga - Winners 101 points
    Copa Del Rey - Winners
    Supercopa - Winners
    UEFA Super Cup - Winners
Champions League - Lost in RO16 to Bayern.

A superb domestic season, but sadly we didn't achieve our goals in the Champions League. We had a pretty poor run through the league phase leaving us going into the playoff round - we comfortably beat Hertha there but a tough draw as an unseeded team against Bayern awaited... Bayern and Liverpool are probably the scariest teams out there, so I didn't want to see them at this stage. We won 2-1 at San Mames and lost 2-0 in the second leg in Germany.

However as the summer rolled around it was time for sales:

    Departures:
Jon Martin now 31, departed to PSG for 50million after 416 appearances for Athletic Club
Julen Diez, 29, departed to Chelsea for 40million. He'd been with us for 3 seasons and had performed admirably - we cop a big loss on him but money isn't an issue - I needed to make room for others coming through.
Aitor Aketxe, 26, departed to Bournemouth for 36million. An excellent servant in the defensive mid area, however he was never more than a rotation option and I had other options
Jon Castro, 31, departed to Arsenal for 40million. 403 appearances for Athletic Club and one of my personal favourites... he was hugely influential in the DLP role to our success and it was a sad day to move on from him.
Jose Jimenez, 29, departed to Arsenal for 31.5million. 331 appearances for Jimenez who was a superb rotation option for us throughout his time at Athletic - covering for Cordoba at LB and also at CB.
Ibon Marin, 28, departed to Arsenal for 40million. 364 appearances for Marin! He was a superb option in defensive midfield - I had quite a few options coming through so decided midfield was the primary area I was going to whield the knife initially in my squad overhaul. Without Marin, Castro and Aketxe I would be bringing through multiple new midfielders.

This meant new faces! In the summer of 2039 we saw the following new faces enter the side -  note that these pictures were taken in November 2040, so around 15 months after summer 2039 - they've developed quite a bit since they first came into the squad! When we first reviewed the squad after the above sales with these guys in, we looked way worse than we did before, but now we're looking very strong.

Ok not exactly starting with a banger here, Jon Goni made huge strides while on loan and facilitated the sale of Jimenez - he's back up to the legendary Cordoba. I think he totally peaked at the end of his loan as he's not developed much since then, but Cordoba hogs the minutes so he's just a reliable back up really.

    spacer.png

Victor Encaje is one who has had a few years on loan - primarily a DM but he's actually in the squad as the 4th choice CB first and foremost, but he's just solid and useful.

    spacer.png

Raul Aizpurua came through at Osasuna and totally slipped under my radar really. I scouted him and he didn't seem to have much potential but I really liked his attribute spread - I signed him for 10million in the January 2039 window and loaned him back to Osasuna - he just improved so well and despite never having much potential according to scouts and coaches, he's become an excellent option in our midfield as a DLP - not world class by any means but a really good fit for our system. He is back up to Xabi Aizpurua who I shifted back to DLP from AM - he's really superb. These two replaced Castro and Marin.

    spacer.png

Benat Virto was on loan at Hellas Verona in 2038/39 and I planned another loan for him, but a cruciate ligament injury in the April scuppered that plan. He remained with the team for 2039/40 to recover with the view I'd get him minutes as a 3rd choice right wing. I had planned initially to move key player Unax Urrutia from RB into the attacking line, but that wasn't working that well, so when Virto returned from injury he became back up to Jon Ibanez at right wing - he continues to improve and I can see him being an important player for us long term.

    spacer.png

Jon Prieto joined from Alaves for 16.5 million - another one that I signed in Jan 2038 but loaned back to his original club to continue his development. I'd been targetting him since his intake, but he wouldn't join until he turned 18. He then joined as back up to Julen Aguirre at left wing and has come on leaps and bounds since then and at the time of writing (early 2040/41 season) he's a genuine threat to Aguirre's spot in the team... despite his incredible years, Aguirre is 31 now and just starting his decline.

    spacer.png

This guy is a real diamond... he came through our academy and always showed middling promise, but two loans firstly at Zaragoza and then Sporting CP saw him come on really well... another who according to star ratings didn't have a high ceiling but I just liked the attribute spread. It's proven to be faith repaid as you can see now he's a top tier defensive midfielder and has exceeded my coaches expectations. He was the direct replacement for Aketxe.

    spacer.png

Moving Unax Urrutia into the forward line was partly to allow this guy to come through at RB as back up to Alex Etxeberria. However... Urrutia struggled to find form in our front line and with Virto coming back from injury I needed to find solutions. I was conscious that Blasco and Javi, two long term central defender options for us were into their early thirties and would soon need replacements lined up. I hadn't really considered this guy to be a CB (he couldn't play the position at all), but after reviewing his attributes I thought he would definitely be decent there... it took nearly the full season of playing him most games at CB to naturally learn the position, and his attribute shift to suit a CB was remarkable, alongside his general development - certainly not a decision I regret. Centre back was an area of concern as Blasco and Aitor Etxeberria had held that area down for a long time... Etxeberria had shifted into defensive midfield to replace Javi (who moved back as cover), but everyone was ageing and I feel like I'd always kinda made do there for years... Etxeberria and Javi were both DMs really, Blasco was a retrained RB. Lafuente here taking to the position so well has been a god send... combined with:

    spacer.png

Jewel of our academy Sergio Garmendia now forms a formiddable centre back duo with Lafuente - these two will be the central defenders we rely on long term.

    spacer.png

Finally with the loss of Jon Martin, we needed a new centre forward to cover for Etxabe. Ander Garmendia was the man. He's a player we signed from Villarreal at 18 years old for 13.25million... honestly he was a total punt at the time because he didn't look like he would live up to that price tag really, there was just something I liked about him. He came in and played for the B team for a season and scored A LOT of goals. He then earned promotion to the first team as a 2* player (with one additional grey star potential) to replace a guy in Jon Martin who had made 400 odd appearances for us who was still world class... he has been amazing though, scoring goals for fun! Etxabe is so good though, but this guy is a reliable back up.

2039/40 Season Review - The New Recruits

Easily our biggest overhaul squad wise left us considerably weaker, but I knew the short term pain would probably be worth it long term.

I didn't expect how difficult it was going to be though...

In La Liga we started off with an opening day victory against Real Sociedad, but then it went down hill... an away loss to Barca was followed up with a draw away to Zaragoza, a loss to Real Madrid in the UCL and a loss away to Sporting Gijon in the league.... while imperious at home our away form was very poor with draws against Osasuna, Villarreal and Espanyol before Christmas. In January we lost in the Supercopa semi to Barca, away to Real in the league and a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Real Sociedad in a match we totally dominated. By the end of January we were 11 points off the top sitting in 4th place having already lost 4 and drawn 4, while sitting 1st in the xG table. I knew the quality was there and we were playing well, but we were conceding way more goals than we should have done. I just stuck with it and from there on we were superb - a great run in Feb-Apr saw us only drop points in a loss away to a srong Cartegena side. With 4 games to go with were 5 points behind Real Madrid and 3 points behind Barcelona and I felt like we were unlikely to win it, but we did at least have Real Madrid at San Mames on the final day which might allow us to do something. In the 3rd to last game Real Madrid had a surprising draw away to Sevilla, and Osasuna did us a huge favour beating Barcelona. Come the final day we were 3 points behind Real Madrid and all we needed was to beat them at home to secure the title... and we did!! A season which I thought was going to totally pass us by ended up in a domestic double.

La Liga - Winners, 91 points
    Copa Del Rey - Winners
Supercopa - Lost in SF to Barca
Champions League - Lost in QF to Liverpool

In he Champions League we narrowly lost a tight game to a Liverpool side who are very impressive... no shame in that one.

Fortunately squad turnover was largely behind us, but we did see a departure for Josu Blasco in the summer of 2040, a man who made 458 appearances for Athletic Club. He left for Saudi for 32million. We also saw back up keeper Iker Zubillaga leave. Javi is also due to leave the club in January after many years of service.

    spacer.png

Urtzi Saizer came in to replace Zubillaga... not impossible he usurps Alberto Etxabe but he has a way to go yet.

Now I think given this is such a long post it's a good chance to have a look at some of our legends:

    spacer.png

Still in the 300s for league appearances (he rotated with Nico Williams for quite a few years), but Unax Urrutia is a club legend... a truly world class right back who has been a key player in our success.

    spacer.png

466 league appearances and counting - Cordoba has been our main man at left back for a long time now.

    spacer.png

Juan Etxabe is one of the most reliable forwards I've ever had on FM. 263 goals in 360 league appearances and counting, and a Ballon D'or winner.

    spacer.png

Julen Aguirre at 31 is just starting to decline, but no significant impact yet.

    spacer.png

Gorrotxategi... once an inconsistent woodwork specialist is now an incredibly reliable, clinical player. 431 league appearances and counting.

    spacer.png

Jon Ibanez... an absolute legend. 393 league appearances, no thanks to a full year out with cruciate ligament injury.

    spacer.png

Much younger, but a very impressive Xabi Aizpurua.

With Blasco gone, Javi soon to depart, Aguirre at 31, Gorrotxategi at 30, Ibanez at 30 and Cordoba at 32 we are reaching the end of this golden generation. We've had some wonderful new players come through but it'll be tough to replicate this group.

Cordoba is at 553 career appearances for Athletic, meaning he's only 61 shy of Iribar's record. Given our best LB prospect is only 16, I think he'll beat it.

I hope you are recovering well.  A very pleasant way to pass the time until you are recovered though.  Congratulations on your continued success.  I enjoyed seeing the legends.

  2. I have now completed the 2029-30 season and what a season it was.  We have been second before but this year we were in our first title race.  We won both cups and progressed to the Champions League final so it has to be described as a success.  The league was decided on the final day of the season and we beat Alaves to maintain our unbeaten season in the league.  We needed that to hold Real at bay as we both got over 100 points.  What a battle to secure our first league title.

    image.thumb.png.24da0594aa29feed99ee334464e962fc.png

The B team also had a good season finish fourth but most importantly the younger players got some good experience and reasonable average ratings to maximise their development.

    image.thumb.png.4307a86481c74031d998597ef2856e06.png

We lost to PSG in the Champions League final without really getting into the game but we were never expecting to win that trophy and getting to the final was an achievement enough.

This is our team of the year.  Interestingly no place for Nico Williams.  He got in a bit of a huff regarding a move (or lack of) and was moved out to left-wing for most of the season where he was largely a disappointment.  Other than that there was a little variation but these were largely my preferred 11.

    image.thumb.png.ab23b7fcc62accecf19f5eab10bde9fb.png

Now the planning to retain the tile.  Having made my first purchases I am going to look to see if there are any additional options t bolster the squad.  At the very end when the games were coming thick and fast we were struggling with squad depth.  We have a transfer budget of £412 million though we may need to move some across to wage budget if we are going to make any signings.  It may be time to loosen the purse strings.

    image.png

  3. In the summer ahead of the 2029-30 season, we sold Julen Agrirrezabala for £8.5 million as he wanted to leave and was only our back-up keeper, Alex Berenguer for £750,000 after last season out on loan and youngster Benat Garcia for £2.6 million as he was never going to make the first team.  In order to properly compete with Barcelona and Real I decided to buy some Basque players.  So the first signings of the save are Andres Dominguez and Urtzi Albistegi.  Dominguez  is a promising 20 year old left-back that came in at the same level of Imanol but with significant potential.  We paid £8.75 million to meet his release clause and sign him from Osasuna.

    image.thumb.png.421c1ed65ee8178c61c3046d39e63fe8.png

Albistegi is a young forward signed from Antiguoko for £66,000.

    image.thumb.png.65449037f15b2c5fd10c29166e43c4b7.png

The other major change is that I took charge of the B team to manage the playing time and positions of my youngsters with a view of aiding their development.  I have quite enjoyed this although I have only been playing games on instant result (there are limits to my control freakishness).

2037/38 Season Review - The best season I've ever had

I'll preface this by saying I've had a week off work so I've been on the FM buzz this week haha.

    La Liga - Played 38, won 36, drew 2. Scored 115, conceded 16 - 110 points

I'm pretty sure that is the best season I've ever had on FM, or certainly in recent version of the game with Athletic. This team is completely at it's peak - a team full of consistent players, all but 1 or 2 love big matches and the average age is around 27 or so. We are going to be moving past this peak I'd imagine and our next generation doesn't look as good, so I'm enjoying this while it lasts.

    Champions League - Winners

We went in at half time in the final 2-0 down to a Milan side who had just walked Serie A - but I hit the right notes with the team talk and we blitzed the second half, winning 4-2. Prior to that we beat Real Madrid in the semi final, Napoli in the 1/4 final on penalties and Porto in the round of 16.

    Copa Del Rey - Winners

A 3-0 final victory against Real Madrid after favourable draws all the way to the final

    Supercopa - Winners

We beat Barca 4-1 in the semi final and Atletico 4-0 in the final

I'm not sure I'll ever be able to recreate this season honestly, utterly incredible and the comeback in the Champions League final was the icing on the cake. Our draws in La Liga both came at home to the two Madrid clubs FYI, and we did lose a few games during the season against Bayern (league phase) and Porto and Napoli both away in the Champions League.

No major transfer business to speak of, just some young prospects from other Basque clubs (and a Basque player from Barcelona also).

One of the reasons I'm retaining an interest in this save is because we are close to another generation coming in. Currently we have:

    Gk - Etxabe 22, Zubillaga 24, Etxeberria 25
    RB - Urrutia 27, Etxebarria 24, Lafuente 20
    LB - Cordoba 29, Jimenez 28
    CB - Blasco 30, Etxebarria 27, Goti 26, Garmendia 20
    DM - Castro 30, Javi 29, Aketxe 25, Marin 27
    AM - Gorrotxategi 28, Aizpurua 24
    RW - Ibanez 28, Diez 28
    LW - Aguirre 29, Iturrino 21
    CF - Etxabe 26, Martin 30

Cordoba at 29 is a key player, he's about to turn 30 next week in game (September), Castro is a key player and has already turned 30, Javi is first choice DM and hits 30 in Feb, Blasco will be 31 in April and is our key centre back, Gorrotxategi turns 29 in November but fortunately Aizpurua is a world class player in the same position, Jimenez is a key option to cover Cordoba and at 28 is not far behind him in years, Jon Martin is a super sub across the front line and will be 31 this season. Basically we have a large group of players who are going to be passing their prime in the coming years - we're probably good for 2 seasons and then we'll start losing elite players with young players coming through who don't look anywhere near their level, so I'm keen to keep playing the save to see how that transition plays out - we've got time, but it's such a big group of key players who are all going to need to be replaced around the same time that makes it fascinating.

Looks like a week well spent to me.  Congratulations.

That's the thing about Athletic, there is always a challenge.

  5. I have completed my first season back at Athletic.  After five years of coming second, a moderate performance in the Champions League and with a couple of Spanish cups and three Spanish Super Cups, I wanted to push on for some sustained success.  I came in and reviewed the whole structure as if I was a new manager.  I overhauled the staffing structure, initially focussing on coaches and scouts, changed the training schedules and tweaked the tactical style based on the strengths of the first eleven.  No stone was left unturned I hope the hard work delivers some longer term success but this season we finished third and failed to win any trophies!

    image.thumb.png.b2f8815795664525ec804a62cb3a882a.png

The season was not a complete write-off though with a couple of our youngsters making significant development progress.

Arkaitz Aranburu had a big season as he broke into the first team and will be first choice alongside Dani Vivian next year.

    image.thumb.png.b2894b8c47b020bacc98161efe50d481.png

Gonzalo Astrain has been retrained to be a left back and is ready to take over from Imanol

    image.thumb.png.cf6c7ca9f84d82dc0b0ffb07f33ee651.png

Mikel Eguaras is our one striling hope and has taken the lead role from Inaki Williams.

    image.thumb.png.b5e13d33ff11c5ed5e3e3578b5e10d6b.png

Inaki Pascual already plays a crucial role in our centre midfield alongside Oihan Sancet.

    image.thumb.png.1653ecdfc9928d93e71da73da3dbf502.png

Santiago Kortina  is a very able back-up to Nico Williams who gets more than enough games to allow his development.  At the moment we have two options on the right but we are considerably weaker on the left with Jon Morcillio, Peio Hestamendia or an out of position Nico Williams.

    image.thumb.png.b12315cc0ce1d6041d1998562c285722.png

Asier Alonso is older than Inaki Pascual.  He does not have the same level of quality but he has still developed into an able deputy.

    image.thumb.png.eec3b2ead607fe627041b490fe76bbeb.png

We shall dust ourselves down and go again.  This summer we need to decide what to do with Inaki Williams and Julen Agirrezabala as they want to leave for new challenges and neither are first team players.  I am also going to have to try to fight off Newcastle who have set their eyes on Unai Simon.

The one thing that has happened this summer that I have never noticed before is that I have had youth players poached.  Is this something that other people have experienced?  I have lost three players in the early part of the summer to Lugo, Alaves and Huesca.  I was not expecting this.  I thought it was more likely that we would be doing the poaching.  I have made a list of the names to track their progress when they enter the game.  Hopefully we have not lost our best players.

So far I have not bought anyone.  I missed out on Aymeric Laporte as he left the game before I could persuade him back to Athletic.  I am wavering and considering buying some Basque youngsters to bolster the ranks.

    image.png

  6. It has been a couple of months since I have posted.  I have been off playing other saves but I have enjoyed catching up with your Athletic updates.  Thank you in particular to @bowieinspace, @dothestrand and @Darius1998

I always enjoy a save where you can sign wonderkids but I have now got bored of the constant churn and yearn for the Athletic world where you develop stronger ties with your players because there is only them and your developments and achievements mean more.  So I am back to managing Athletic and rather than starting again I have picked up my save from earlier.  So I am in 2028 and after five years of coming second, a moderate performance in the Champions League and with a couple of Spanish cups and three Spanish Super Cups, I want to push on for some sustained success.

Whilst I can remember most of my players (even better than the players in my last save - the beauty of Athletic) I cannot remember the situations in relation to staffing, tactics, contracts, dynamics, training etc so I am treating this as I would if I was taking on a new job.  The first thing to decide is to determine whether I continue the Lezama only perspective or allow myself to purchase the odd player to bolster the ranks.

  7. Third season complete.  We were top going into the New Year but fell away.  We drew a couple of games and lost away to Villarreal but we were not that bad.  Barcelona went on an incredible run of form and completed the season unbeaten.  I'm not sure we could have done any more and yet still we fell just short.

    image.thumb.png.13338ddd89bca210877d31a2bb71cc82.png

Considering we are not buying players who have not been through our academy we are doing okay and having to be flexible with our approach.  The squad were unhappy with the lack of depth at the start of the season.  I can't say I was overly chuffed either but complaining is hardly going to help.  The loss of the older fullbacks left us exposed on the flanks so I decided to go with a 3-4-3 formation which I can't say I loved.  We did look exposed on the flanks at times.  Our wingers are not the best defensively but when it clicked it did click.  Here are pretty much our first eleven when all were fit.

    image.thumb.png.c92b7956ad41c8c586cdbbf07744d494.png

In a repeat of last year we bumped out of the Champions League in the first knock-out round by RB Leipzig but we fared better in the domestic cups.  We reached the final of the Spanish Super Cup versus Barcelona.  I tired to relieve pressure in the lead up to the game.  There was an early disallowed goal from Barca and we rode our luck a bit but went in at half time one up through a Unai Vencedor.  Oihan Sancet then doubled our lead before they pulled one back.  Frenkie De Jong then equalised in the final minute.   At this stage they had dominated the game but we could count ourselves a little unlucky not to hold on.  In extra time we continued to be positive but we were taken apart on the break to lose 4-2.

In January again we looked at Aymeric Laporte but he is still unaffordable.  There is nobody else that improves the first team but we do agree to sign Jesus Areso on a free in case we go back to full backs for next year.  After the transfer window Nico Williams withdrew his transfer request so I went straight in to offer him a new contract to tie him down for a further two years and also increasing his minimum release clause.

In the Spanish Cup we met Barcelona in the final again in a repeat of the Spanish Super Cup.  Barcelona came out of the blocks scoring inside 3 minutes and soon doubled their lead.  They completely dominated the first half and could have scored a couple more as they hit the post and Unai Simon saved from point blank range.  We came back at them in the second half.  In the 68th minute we brought off Iker Muniain and threw on Jon Morcillo.  He was in the right place at the right time as the ball broke to him in the box to pull one goal back.  Then three minutes later Nico Williams laid it across the box for Inaki WIlliams to tap in and we had a second final tied at 2-2 with Barcelona.  This time we held on in extra time and Simon was the hero saving penalties from Kessie and even catching a penalty from Ansu Fati.  A second trophy of the save and the first time we had beaten a big side in an important match.  Hopefully there will be more to come.

  8. We have just completed our second season.  We were not able to bring anyone back to the club.  Realistically the main target is Aymeric Laporte as the only player that will significantly strengthen the first team.  Sadly he followed the Saudi money, transferring for £55 million and he is on a weekly wage roughly equal to my wage budget so I do not see him coming back in the near future.  Therefore there were no transfers in and we let a couple of bit part players go for small sums (Juan Artola for £675,000 and Benat Prados for £800,000) meaning the squad was largely unchanged.

We struggled at the start of the season.  Mikel Vesga was unhappy that I was unprepared to double his wages at the age of 31 when he had two years left on his contract.  Many of the squad agreed with him including Iker Munian, my captain.  I'm not sure how much of our sluggish start was down to this but it certainly did not help.  In the end, we recorded a second place finish in the league.  It looks a lot tighter than it was as Real and Barca fell away in the final weeks and we went past Barca on the final day of the season as they drew with Real.

    image.thumb.png.0cc6cacef2872d5747eaf6441143c2b7.png

Real also knocked us out of both domestic cup competitions (Semis of the Spanish Cup and Final of the Super Cup).  In the Champions League we were unlucky to be knocked out by RB Leipzig in the first knockout round after the group stage.  In summary it was a reasonable season where we met our targets comfortably but were unable to properly compete with the bigger teams.  We competed hard but there were some games  where we were completely outclassed.

There were no real surprises in our team of the year.  It may look different next year as age is catching up with some of the team/squad so I need to make some changes and may need to make a change to the system over the summer.

    image.thumb.png.fa82bac10f0bf287b354930a8b4336d8.png

  9. We've just completed our first full season and surprising ourselves by being sandwiched between Barca and Real in the top three.

There were no transfers in, largely as I'm only going to buy back former youth players and youngsters from our affiliates (if anyone).  I did clear out a few players in January that hadn't had much gametime.  Asier Villalibre wanted to leave so he went for £2m.  Inigo Ruiz De Galarreta (£4.4m), Peru Nolaskoain (£230,000) Gorka Guruzeta (£850,000) and Mikel Balenziaga (£0) also left without any real loss of options.  Aitor Paredes left on loan which was eventually accepted by Iker Muniain.  I promoted Imanol, Urko Izeta, Aingeru Olabarrieta and Benat Prados to plug a few gaps in the squad.

This is our best 11 and largely reflects how we lined up except we played a gegenpress (not wing play) as our default tweaking styles as required in games.  Inaki was also our main striker but he disappointed at times.

    image.thumb.png.a70ea52c17411b44888d2ae9bef0b70c.png

In the Spanish Cup it opened up for us as we were joined in the semi-finals by Levante, Elche and Girona.  This was a fine chance to get our first trophy which nearly went begging as we struggled past Levante in the semi-final.  After drawing 2 all at theirs we then were leading 1-0 in the home leg before they scored with their only shot in the 95th minute.  We got the winner in extra time .  Girona proved easier in the final as Dani Vivian and Inaki Williams got the goals to give the two nil victory and our first trophy.

Next season will probably be more of a challenge as we try to cope with European football.   I am looking to see if we can bring back Aymeric Laporte and maybe a goal keeper for depth to deal with injuries.  Other than that we may look to give certain players new contracts to protect our assets.

  10. @bowieinspace Thanks for the update.  it is always interesting to see various Athletic newgens and track their development.

We have just made it through to March and things are ticking over okay with the exception of our captain, Muniain, getting in a huff because of the shortage of centre backs as I loaned out Aitor Paredes.  We always have too many players to keep happy until we have European football to worry about so I cleared some of the squad to make it more manageable.  The biggest threat to the season is the influence of the Incredible Sulk rather than the squad depth.  I'll report back later as to how things turn out.

I came in to show you our first youth intake.  Not a golden generation but I promising crop all the same.  Let the development begin.

Sadly the Alonso's are not twins/brothers.

  11. After blasting through until January as a trial on the Beta, I have started my full save and I am keen to get going.   I am intending to focus on Athletic homegrown players so limited or no transfers in.  This means keeping hold of my key players is number one priority.  I made it through the first transfer window unscathed and secured many on new contracts taking me well over budget but I was able to negotiate down all the high earners except Inaki Williams to get back under budget.  If Barca can do it, I don't see why we can't.

I am starting with a basic 4-2-3-1 Gegenpress and see where that takes us.

  12. Hi all.  Thanks to @bowieinspace for setting up the thread and thanks all for the interesting contributions so far and I look forward to seeing everybody's Athletic worlds unfold.

I have been monitoring whilst I got transfers out of my system in an Everton rebuild.  I am excited to be starting my main Athletic save on Monday once the full game is released.  Until then I have started a mini game to test out a few things in advance.  Firstly, I seem to be settling on a 4-2-3-1 but I am struggling to utilise direct passing to satisfy expectations.  I am also struggling to find a good role for Muniain.  The best so far seems to be winger on attack.  He is occasionally exceptional and often poor.  As captain I would like to get consistently good performances from him.

I am intending to focus on Athletic homegrown players.  I will allow the purchase of former youth players such as Laporte if possible and possibly young Basque players from our affiliate clubs.  Otherwise I will not be making any other transfers.  I will be therefore starting on a "Your World" setting as I do not want any players coming in and I'd like to keep Vencedor and Morcillo.  As usual new contracts getting rid of minimum low minimum fee release clauses seems key and I shall be using transfer funds for this.  I had to give new contracts to Sancet, Nico Williams and Vivian and thankfully Raul Garcia accepted a lower wage to offset the increased wages for these three.

  13. With the imminent arrival of FM24, I may have just finished my last season in FM23.  We have just finished the 2040-41 season with a clean sweep of trophies taking our total to 16 league titles, 10 Spanish Cups, 10 Spanish Super Cups, 6 Champion Leagues and 1 Club World Championship.  I am excited about the new game so I may get just one more tilt at the Club World Championship.

As always, I have thoroughly loved managing Athletic.  I may try a few other saves but I always keep coming back to this save.  Not being able to just sign the best means that the emotional ties with the players are immense and I have grown tactically trying to be more flexible to bring the best out of my stars.  As a wrap up, I thought I'd have a look at the important players in this journey.  The following is my all-time best eleven:

    image.thumb.png.3e8ef74099008bacd4bc3b8b63904cfa.png

It is a mixture of real players and my newgens. My favourite player has been Asier Blanco.  He has been a sensational winger who has won games on his own and has dictated our team shape for over a decade.  He is our best player but at 33 is on the decline.

An special mention goes to Alvaro Pascual who has been played all over the place and has been brilliant wherever he has played.  Also 33 now he remains a key squad player and no one has played more games.

    image.thumb.png.fb927c7f970257d2ce62c44fb558f8f3.png

I am surprised by the omission of Unai Vencedor who was a very important player and David Telletxea was a very important provider of goals between Jon Karrikarburu years and the current superstar striker Ignacio Cordoba.

    image.thumb.png.08aa1f0f0065e8e537f275cdb374f27a.png

Borja Undabarrena is the only player who has been purchased in this group having been signed for £24 million from Osasuna.  I am torn for FM24 between continuing this story to see the new crop of youngsters growing or starting a new save where it will be the Athletic youth academy only.  We'll have to see but either way I can't wait.

Who's excited for FM24? What are your expectations/points of interest for Athletic? Here's my 2 cents, expectations or things I am simply keen to see:

    1) They're talking about improved AI squad building, transfers and team selections. Athletic being a long term save I've found has been plagued by poor AI squad building in recent years. I am hoping these changes provide more long term competition from the big teams in Spain.
    2) Aitor Paredes, Inigo Ruis de Galarreta, Gorka Guruzeta, Unai Gomez to name a few have all stepped into the first team, but none of these guys were really capable in FM23... I wonder how they will look in FM24.
    3) Vencedor has been largely discarded by Valverde but has had amazing potential in recent FMs... maybe a drop here :(
    4) Vesga boost maybe?
    5) Will it be possible to retain Nico Williams? This is a scary one! I'm going to be looking at that contract straight away when I load up my save.
    6) Raul Garcia 37, Oscar De Marcos 34, Ander Herrera 34, Yuri 33, Dani Garcia 33, Muniain 30, De Galarreta 30, Lekue 30, Vesga 30, Inaki 29.... quite a lot of work to be done here in the first few seasons. I hope there's been decent bumps to some of the younger players to help with the transition! We've already seen this season there's a bit of a shift in terms of players... Guruzeta and Paredes have been ever present so far this season, Muniain has been in and out, Raul Garcia an impact sub at most. I'll be a a bit disappointed if Paredes is still super low CA given he's keeping Yeray out of the team, and Guruzeta needs a bump!

Very excited about starting the new game.  I obviously hope there are some great youngsters in the youth set-up as I am tempted to do a youth only save.  The volume of older players could make it harder than previous years.  I also like the idea of improved squad building which should mean that Real and Barca continue to be competitive.

I hope interaction with the players has been improved, particularly around outgoing transfers/contracts.  The most annoying part of FM23, was players deciding to consider their options but not being to have any further conversations with them and them not considering any offers from us.  The only options was to cash-in and try to buy them back in the future.  It happened so frequently and there was no appreciation of the loyalty that Athletic inspires.

I love the unique world that is created by newgens as much if not more than the world of real players.  One thing that is intriguing is being able to continue my FM23 save over in FM24.  The idea of keeping the story of my newgen Athletic players going in the new game holds some appeal and is something I am considering.

  15. It has been a while since I have provided an update after flirting with a few saves I have come back to my Athletic save.  We have just finished 2036/37.  Dani Vivian and Oihan Sancet retired last year.  Nico Williams and Jon Karrikaburu departed in January as they wanted more came time.  This just left Unai Vencedor from the real life players and when he retires this summer I will be living in a purely newgen world.

I like to move players on before they need new contracts if they are not going to make it, to bolster the coffers and clear room for the next crop of youngsters.  Before the season began we moved on a few players who were not going to make it: Ibon Aranburu moved for £16.75M to Benfica, Iosu Alvarez moved to PSG for £5.5M, Iker Orbegozo went to Arsenal for £7.75M and Immanol Larrazabal for £18.5M to Southampton.  Larrazabal wouldn't sign a new contract so I decided I would let him go and may look to buy him back in the futrure.  I generally get it right but it does give me a transfer interest if they go on to prove me wrong or we are desperate for a particular position in the future.

In 2036 we won the Spanish Super Cup and we went out in the quarter finals of the Spanish Cup to Espanyol.  We won the league for the 11th year in a row.

    image.thumb.png.023fb0be32413534a09059e51c2d3d52.png

We moved to a 4-4-2 narrow diamond in February with the loss of Asier Blanco to injury for two months but returned to our standard 4-2-3-1 once he was back to fitness.

In the Champions League, we got revenge on Espanyol, before beating, Bayern and Real to earn a place in the our third final in a row hoping to get over last year's disappointment.  We faced of with Marcelo Gallardo's Inter and were in control for the whole match as we won 3-1.

    image.thumb.png.abefc53e91a506d748547037eda97809.png

We are now very much reliant on the first tranche of newgens.  The team is built around Zigor PerezJon SaizarAlvaro Pascual and Asier Blanco.  They are all 29 so we need to think about succession planning to ensure that there players ready to step into their shoes in three years or our run of success could come to a crashing halt.

  16. Managing Athletic, we have focussed on youth development but we have also been fighting to maintain a sensible control of our wage expenditure.  The transfer budget has not been an issue since we started qualifying for the Champions League and currently stands around £700 million but there is no one to spend any money on.  We have had a few players that have not developed as much as hoped and we have lost a few players that have been poached by other clubs.  Arsenal (under Mikel Arteta) have had a number of our young players.  We have some very strong midfielders and a couple of players have developed into superstars.

Alvaro Pascual was one of the first to break through into the first team.  He has moved around a bit in terms of position and role but has settled into the wide left role.  It may not be his best role but it is the best overall fit for the team.

    image.png.90b3f25595d1e98dde57f9fe662514e3.png

Asier Blanco is the reason that we have not moved to the diamond.  He is our best young player and can only play on the wing so whilst he remains at the club we will be playing 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1.  The development of Pascual and Blanco have meant that Nico Williams has been demoted to back-up.

    image.png.baa1b088cacbdd710020c49d0a7dfc77.png

Borja Undabarrena is the exception in he is a player that we have brought into the club as we spent £24 million to bring him in from Osasuna at the age of 17.  He has played a little on the wing but has now developed into a centre midfielder as a mezzala pushing Oihan Sancet onto the bench.

    image.png.a1083dfc87b4525662d170ad32008e67.png

Jon Saizar developed well through various loan spells and has spent the last three years as our main attacking midfielder and saw us change from 4-3-3 to 4-2-3-1

    image.png.8a4eef7d6cd40e8e52b35f80a6f4d744.png

Ekain Albistegi is our utility player who has been used across midfield to get gametime but he is probably now ready to replace Unai Vencedor.

    image.png.e9be7d2c7b50c0bf6c90b788917ea750.png

We have been short of players coming through upfront and in defence so we relied on the old guard in these positions but a number of other youngsters are having to break through as the old guard fall away.  We have a few promising youngsters for the future, all coming through the academy.  Asier Torres is the first really promising centre back to come through.

    image.png.f6176cbdcc42ae847e316e261a29edd6.png

Javi Pereda is another midfielder top add to the list

    image.png.769c71b6e4babd732b5362b7b66039e2.png

Ignacio Cordoba is hopefully the long awaited replacement for Jon Karrikaburu.

    image.png.d05245fd363fe0f86af78a22dcaea783.png

Aitor Beitia is yet another promising midfielder.

    image.png.99a790b2593e377a045c671aecc1f430.png

Ibon Agirre is one of two promising keepers who have come through just in time to replace Unai Simon.  He needs to get some game time (probably on loan after a spell in the B team).

    image.png.799917eb712db73bb9ca0781bc9d24c4.png

Aitor Merino is slightly older and more experienced and is already starting to be rotated in for the odd game.

    image.png.bbf1dccf43ff73c1e7fb033a4aa26377.png

We're just hoping for some decent fullbacks now or I need to start developing a tactical system without any fullbacks.  I don't really have an abundance of wide midfielders either so it could be interesting.

  17. It has been three years since I provided an up date.  In those years we have been moderately successful with three further league titles, a few cups and our first and only Champions League title.  The fun part though has been the development of the players and the evolution of the squad.  Like all Athletic saves, in my first ten years, I have been dependent on developing the youth players that come through.  The temporary fixes (Aihen Munoz, Hugo Guillamon, Andoni Gorosabel and Robin Le Normand) have all done their jobs but have all now left the club.

We have been very reliant on the usual stars with the all time 11 dominated by Unai Simon, Dani Vivian, Unai Vencedor, Oihan Sancet, Nico Williams and Jon Karrikaburu.

    image.thumb.png.693d448b93a7d06350904e2a3669b659.png

I have now reached the point where I am starting succession planning to replace these stars in the coming years.  In my next update I'll show the youngsters that I will be looking to for the future of Athletic, for the next ten years.

  18. I haven't posted an update in a long time so I shall try to prepare a short summary of what has happened in the last few years. In the meantime I thought I'd share how things have gone for Jon Karrikaburu as he has just eclipsed Telmo Zarra in the all-time scoring charts.

    image.png.36ba308881429a72af8c486678dc8a33.png

His goalscoring record has been phenomenal and he is still only 29 with a good few years ahead of him (which is a good job as we have not been blessed with a great striker through the academy yet).

I'm tempted to start a homegrown only save, e.g. not buy any players and just rely on the regents. But I'd probably want to start the save a few years in to have a couple of intakes to work with.

I often feel like this when I am a few seasons in with Athletic and it starts getting easier.  I only ever buy Basque players but I often go on a purge and clear those that I have brought into the club to increase the challenge.  So far I have been reviewing where I got to and I will probably try to pick up where I left off but I may decide to focus only on the players that have come through the academy.

2030-2031 Season Update: Four In A Row

After a break, I've resumed my Athletic Club save, and taken home the La Liga titles for the fourth consecutive season. It was a bit touch and go with half a dozen games to go, when we had FIVE away matches remaining, but luckily it was us who held our nerve, whilst our closest rivals, Real, lost back to back away matches to Atletico and Espanyol respectively. This meant our last game, away to Real, was a dead rubber. A familiar tale in the cups; a QF defeat in the CL to Liverpool, lost the Super Cup Final to Villareal, and an early exit in the Spanish Cup to Mallorca. Could've done much better in the domestic cups.

In terms of the squad, we had a bit of turnover of the fringe players. Aimar Vicandi went to Saudi Arabia for 20m, Martin Zubimendi went to Nice for 8.5m, and we moved a regen winger onto Nice for 18.5m. In bigger news, we sold Unai Simon to Man Utd for 25m. Man Utd also took Dani Vivian on a Bosman.

This gave us a chance to bring some youngsters into the first team, most of whom I've already highlighted. We are approaching a transition period as we have a few guys well into their thirties; a 37yo Laporte and a 34yo Le Normand need replacing soon, which means we may need Vivian back, or else we could be light in defence as we're not blessed with regens just yet (I've a 17yo with 4.5 potential and he's been in the first team squad with the odd game).

Outside of the first team, we've got several promising players who should be first team potential soon. Loans really help them kick on. Some have had remarkable accelerations in their development. I've got a couple of decent keepers, a wonderkid LB and more right-wingers than UKIP, all knocking on the door. I'm still amused by the cheek of the wage demands of several youngsters. One RB in my under 19s - very promising but a few years off first team football - wanted 90k per week! We're well behind on the wage budget, but I was tempted to sell him with a release clause just to sting him on wages.

A few small changes to the backline then, but otherwise not too many massive changes for the next season.

Interesting.  I have just been considering this evening another go at Athletic.  I have been playing a few journeyman saves and I found myself hankering after Athletic.  I got to Summer 2030 in my original save and I am trying to decide whether to start again or to continue where I got.  I came here to see whether anyone was still progressing fun Athletic saves.

also has anyone ever got a good injection of cash? whats the best method to grow, just develop youth?

I haven't sold Nico.  I had a similar dilemma with Inaki Williams when I received a never to be repeated offer and I didn't sell.  It hurt because sensible financial management is a big part of my style but in the early years these players are irreplaceable and by the time some newgens develop cash is not an issue any more.  The difference with Bilbao is just to get the best Basque players available and shape your team around their strengths.  Never mind the money.

Youth development is key.  Improve your facilities at any opportunity, get good staff and focus on youth training in a way you'd never bother at any other club.

Money can be used to tie down contracts where required but I keep my wage bill as low as possible because if you have available budget every player wants a cut.  Wage demands go up the more you have in your budget so keep it in transfers and go over the wage budget if you have to but then adjust the budgets.

Are there any purists who purge the staff on day one and terminate non-basque staff?

I know it's not the club's policy in real life but I keep doing it in all my Athletic saves.

I'd be pleased to hear any staff advice from those who do it.

Personally hiring Edorta Murua as HOYD is the first move I do. Not sure him remaining Qatar U19 manager as well affects his job efficiency though.

That is a bit extreme for me.  I'd have to be the first out the door.  I'm happy with non Basque staff but do like to still keep a strong Basque contingent.

  23. We have completed our 2028/29 season.  The signing of a 32 year old Robin Le Normand for £8.5 million hon reasonable wages helped us seal our fourth title in five years.  We also won the Copa Del Rey beating Barcelona one nil in the final and the Spanish Cup by beating Villareal 2-1 .  We failed in the Champions League again!  This time, losing by the odd goal to Liverpool in the semi-final.

    image.png.33abce1a526a0693b9c293f70d4a5c3b.png

It was a very close season with only four points between us and Real, with us winning the title with a game to spare.

    image.png.31e436a8da37abe52aee5150768581f4.png

Jon Karrikaburu was phenomenal again with 45 goals in the league and 64 in 45 starts in all competitions.  The biggest weakness in the team remains at left back and there is not much coming through the youth teams at left back or wing back to improve matters.  This is clearly going to be my weak point this year.

    image.png.c53ed6c344b902ba2cc2984aa6e2ea70.png

One final thing to note is the new scout arranged by my technical director.  He has found someone who might be a touch over qualified!!
