Try this and see if it helps:

    - Go into Steam and right-click on the game
    - Select 'Properties'
    - Click 'Set Launch Options...'
    - Copy the following into the dialogue box: --disable_flip_discard
    - Close the panel by clicking the 'x' button and launch the game

Any consideration of a hotfix to revert whatever change this workaround reverses? General consensus from this thread alone, although granted not representative of all users across the world, seems to be that this change makes performance worse for most people.

Interesting, I'd expect On to really be the same as what the default is, but will follow up with the graphics coders

I may have jumped the gun on my response actually.

Even after updating that setting in NVIDIA Control Panel, it was still a bit laggy although I think there was some improvement. Still not enough for my liking though, so I reverted that and have re-added the target command and back to pre-patch levels / silky smooth UI.

Just did it for fm in game pass with 3070ti and it works

Go inside game folder and make a shortcut for fm.exe , then paste the command like that

    Thank you, sir!

So anyone with the slow startup  / high GPU usage think I have figured out what causes it go wrong. It looks like an interaction between the new code and vsync set to fast mode in the nvidia control panel, I tried that locally and can repro the issue then if you set your vsync to application defined it should resolve it without the need for --disable_flip_discard and you should have better performance than before.

Ah okay, my G-Sync may have been a clue then as I have V-Sync set to On in NVIDIA Control Panel, which isn't quite Fast Mode.

Set it to 'Use the 3D application setting' as per your suggestion and seems to have solved it. Your shortcut command also fixed the issue too, but removed that for now :)

Edit: Although saying that, my GPU usage was fine, it was just a generally laggy UI that I was experiencing.

Try launching the game with this command line added and see if it does anything for you, we made a change which should for most people improve performance but its possible with certain graphics cards/drivers it could make things worse in theory.

    --disable_flip_discard

Any way to do this for the Game Pass version? RTX 3080 and game is very laggy even in general navigation. Target is greyed out on the desktop shortcut.

May or may not be relevant, but I have G-Sync enabled.

  5. I think the fact that there are no significant changes between FM22 and FM23 is pretty well documented at this point and I'm sure SI have taken notice of general sentiment this year.

I will however say that a) having access via Game Pass anyway and b) downloading a new skin (Kojuro for those interested, I usually play with default and wanted one that was similar but improved) has sucked me in all over again this year.

I'm enjoying the match engine and seeing some things I can't recall too much in the past such as deflected goals, cutbacks for others, cutting inside and bending in the far post etc. Using my own tactic and am not overly into that side of things as prefer the squad building aspect and just pick my best players with a tactic that suits. I'm enjoying it.

So after a little discussion on new updates for FM23 I realised that I felt a little disappointed that there haven't been any radical changes to the actual way the game is played since.. well a very long time. I've played this game since it was Championship Manager, which is decades! The core of the game is very similar, but each year new features are added, things are imperceptibly tweaked under the hood, the interface changes a bit.

Over time the game has grown and grown, but it's also very similar.

The way I play the game is also very similar, no matter what version I'm on.

There are some things I do a lot

    • Play with my tactics on the tactics screen
    • Look at my players
    • Go to my inbox and hit space thousands of times to get through my emails
    • Play a football match
    • Go to my inbox and hit space thousands of times to get through my emails

There are some things I might do a few times a season such as

    • Look at staff
    • Sort out my training
    • Check my finances
    • Do scouting

And there are A LOT of other things in the game that I never do. There are a lot of screens I never use, there are screens I did not know exist. I could easily get lost in the game, but I don't because I stick to what I know and don't venture too far.

It occurred to me that the game has a lot of bloat and it is unwieldy. I said in another thread that it reminded me of Microsoft products like Word, where the core functionality of the program, the thing I needed to do to achieve my goal when using it, becomes lost under layers of added features that only a tiny percentage of people actually use.

On top of that, bloat extends to every screen. From a design perspective almost every screen is very hard to read and consume because there is so much to take in. Again I've been playing for decades so I know which bit of a screen I need to pay attention to, which means I basically ignore most of the info presented to me. If I didn't ignore it I would never be able to finish a season in my lifetime.

So essentially what I'm saying that personally I not only ignore 80% of the features and screens of the game, but 80% of the content on each of those screens. So I wonder what is the value for it to be there, and wouldn't it make sense to design the interface in a much more streamlined way that fits the way users actually play the game.

So thats why I wondered am I alone in playing this way? Are other people spending their time playing FM by endlessly ignoring everything on screen until they get to the interesting bit. I know SI wanted to change this behaviour but I haven't seen much in the way of radical change.

Am I alone here? How do other people play the game? Do you read everything? What do you ignore? Do you mostly just hammer your way through your inbox till a non skippable action occurs or a game?

    Let me know.

Fully agree. I have an FM 'routine' that I developed many years ago, and each game fundamentally plays the same to me. It's the core gameplay loop that is addictive enough to make me buy it each year (although I may well skip this one), and whilst I do notice the slightly redesigned or new screens every version, they soon get ignored.

I think that's part of the challenge that SI has; how do they improve the game in a way that actually enhances that core gameplay loop rather than with 'bloat' (as others have put it). I think they've mostly missed in their attempts to do that, but I do suggest you load up an older version of FM every now and again just to remind yourself what you've gotten used to!

I also do think there are a number of bugs and QoL improvements that can and should be made to features that are slightly invasive or a part of that core gameplay loop, such as a media and team talk rework, better newgen attribute balancing, player interaction / unhappiness rework etc.

  7. Oh, on FM2007, Daniel Sturridge and Federico Laurito formed a deadly partnership at Spurs, with Sturridge getting more goals than games in one season (about 40 in 39 or so)! Then I bought some Brazilian (Igor?) and he kept Laurito out the side.

Darren Bent on FM2008 is surprisingly deadly, regardless of his donkey attirbutes, scoring 34 in 34 on one save (which I think I still have).

  8. either

    Stanton Fredericks

    or

    Ryan Hartslief

    or

    Benedict Vilakazi

    is it one of them?

    lol

No it's none of those, but thanks for looking. I'll get the CD back off my mate tomorrow and I'll let you know.

The name Freddy comes to mind, but that may be Adu (and it definitely wasn't him). But so does Thomson and William.

    Shall let you know tomorrow...

EDIT: Oh my god my memory is good!

  9. Who was the South African, or possibly North American central midfielder in CM 03/04? He was insanely good, with 20 passing, work rate, team work, stamina, tackling etc. I seem to remember he had a double-barrelled name.

Argh! Think I'll have to dig up that disc wherever it is.

Can't find the flipping game. Think I leant it to a mate. Anybody know who I'm on about? Really desperate to find out now.

Also in CM 03/04, Mbo Mbuezela (sp?) was immense, with 20 for Tackling and Marking IIRC.
