  1. Man, this thread has been a huge inspiration to my tactical adventures. After winning two Bundesliga titles in a row with Bayer Leverkusen (Haaland scored 36 goals in the league in his first season!), Real Madrid offered me the job as manager.
Your latest piece have given me new inspiration for a tactical setup with this lot. It isn’t the hardest working team, but has a lot of technically gifted players, and wing backs that’ll suit this style of play just fine.

Zidane has left me with Telles and Odriozola as the two marauding wing backs, while having Casemiro and Allan as the two physical midfielders.

I brought in De Light from Juve. He will partner Militao or John Stones (Weird transfer by Zidane).

The front four excites me. Eden Hazard can play just about any position in the AM-area, perhaps he could be a great SS. In the same positions I have Ødegaard, Asensio, Olmo, Bale, Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior. I don’t see the latter two being a part of central positions though.

I’m pretty short of strikers. Jovic can probably do a decent job, but is quite limited IMO. Looks a proper goalscorer though. Benzema is in a big decline and can hardly run anymore.

I don’t know if I could setup in a 4222 though. 4231 seems to better suit the players I have. Maybe it is possible to do something similar with that formation though. Inverted wingers (or IF) on either side - maybe an AP could be possible too. The AMC and the striker will be a bigger problem I feel. I want them to work together and getting the AMC to function properly seems to be a problem for most people on here. Any suggestions?

  2. You could probably give one of your midfielders a more aggressive role. Why Bruno Fernandes as a DLP? I think he has the skills to get into the box or take some long shots.

There aren’t many passing options for your midfielders. They can either choose to pass it back and forward amongst each other, or rely on delivering a lucky pass which most of the times will lead to nothing. Give the defense extra bodies to think about, cuz right now it’s only Mane, Salah and Haaland.

Haaland has to come deeper to get the ball. Would a target man on support suit him in this setup? I don’t think he should be the one setting other people up though. His speed and physicality makes him a great pure goalscorer. He could probably benefit from more crossing too. Salahs role won’t do it, and I’m not to sure Mane will either.

Also you have both wing backs on support. If I remember correctly they don’t have cross the ball often as a default setting, but you can probably edit that.

So I would probably change Fernandes’ role to CM-A. I’m not sure how that will work together with your AP-S in midfield though.

  3. 4-2-3-1 has always been my go-to system, and it can be very frustrating to pull off at times.
If you have a decent enough player for it, try experimenting with an inverted wing back on defend duty who will be sort of a fourth player in midfield during build up play. Play him on the same side of the cm-s (or BBM). The idea behind this is to overload the midfield and to always have a free man available for a pass.
After three games in my second season with Leverkusen, I’m seeing great results.

The line up looks like this:

                                                    PF-A

        W-S                                      AM-S                        IF-A/Raumdeuter

                                CM-S.                       DLP-D

    IWB-D                 BPD-D.                CD-D.               WB-S

                                                SK-S

    Instructions:

Positive mentality - I sometimes change to balanced depending on the opposition.

Standard pressing: The front four all set to highest available closing down settings though. A split block perhaps?

Higher LOE and higher D-line with offside trap.

Standard passing, standard tempo, distribute quickly and distribute to CBs or FBs.

That's the one I used. Its got the United version 1st post, with a break down of why I did what I did, and a Dortmund version 3rd post. I've also got it working as a 433 with Lyon where the back 4 and instructions are the same. Hope it gives you some inspiration!

Very good! I love the 442, but haven’t used it for years. Dybala as CFs, and Rashford as ADV. forward could be lethal. I think the roles you used in your Dortmund save might suit my midfield duo Rodri and Savic better. Can’t use Martial as a forward anymore as i retrained him as ML, so he lost his ability to play as a striker apparently. Would an Inwerted Winger be useful instead of the wide playmaker? Sancho should definitley play as a Winger or Wide Midfielder on the right.

You don't need to have possession, you just need to be more attacking rather than counter-attacking. I've had great success with United the past two years using Attacking with Pass Into Space (among other TIs) managing to absolutely obliterate opponents whilst averaging around 40% possession.

Okay, sounds very interesting. So attacking mentality? High press? I’ve seen too many times on this forum, that pass into space is useless against teams where there is no space to pass into. But maybe I should give it a try. I don’t mind losing possession, I just want to see my players try to get the ball into dangerous areas of the pitch. Any tips on roles and duties on an attacking mentality? My ideal starting eleven: De Gea, Tierney, De Ligt, Skriniar, Cancelo, Rodri, Milinkovic-Savic (couldn’t hold on to Pogba), Martial, Dybala, Sancho, Rashford. I usually play in a 4411, but have been inspired by articles and videos about Ajax this season.

It means they will still attempt counters, but not at every single opportunity but only when it looks really promising. Of course, how often it will be depends - among other factors - on your overall tactical setup.

Thats what I thought. I had great succes with a counter-tactic I developed myself, but now that almost everyone refuse to attack me, I no longer see the point of using that strategy, except when facing equal or stronger teams. Time to develop a possession strategy. I hate that.

  7. So far I have played 95% of all my matches with “counter” in the transition phase. However, I play as Man United, and having won everything so far, teams in the league will usually sit deep the entire match even though I get the go ahead goal. I’m thinking about removing “counter” and not select either counter or hold shape. Does that mean that my team will find the correct time to counter or hold shape?

I feel that having counter ticked against teams that sit deep no matter what is counter-productive, as my players will break forward with no real space to explore.

This tactic is absolutely a monster.

It produces a LOT of long shots, but is absolutely dominating in every game. You will have scoring from the front 4 and BBM.

I've tried to tone down the number of long shots and to produce more CCC by using work ball to box on lower mentality but it doesn't seem to help a lot. There can be games where you will concede from just a couple of shots due to the high line and fail to score enough and lose or draw but it's like very very rare. Usually it is problematic against ******,park the bus opposition where you won't suceed in breaking them. But after you score first goal it's a walk in the park. Against tougher and stronger teams who will attack you this is just insanely good.

I have tried this with HSV, Real Madrid and Racing and it worked in all 3 saves like a charm.

To be honest, I don't know why exactly. I would never build this kind of tactic with so few attack duties and such aggressive full back roles with basically no real DM but it works.

I only switch DLF/A to PF/A. But both work fine, it's just my preference. Also I change the mentality sometimes , switching between balanced and positive usually. When failing to break down the opposition or chasing the game, you can go to attacking/very attacking and put attack duties for fullbacks and/or IF's.

I have a similar setup with a few differences.

    GK - sweeper keeper support

    DL - Full back Attack

    DCL - Central Defender

    DCR - Ball Playing Defender

DR - Full back - support

    MCL - DLP Defend

    MCR - Mezzala Attack

    AMC - Attacking Midfielder Support

    AML - Inside forward Support

    AMR - Winger Support

    ST - Complete Forward Attack

@Rasmus currently in the off season between 1st and 2nd season and PSG have also been unsettling Pogba and De Gea. So far, I've rejected bids by asking for more money, which PSG declined. With De Gea a small conversation helped ("why would you want to leave"). Pogba however, is still unhappy and I did have to do a squad meeting because a lot of his colleagues were angry that I didn't give him a dream move. Telling them that this would weaken our squad got them around very quickly (players are apparently very very dumb according to SI). So far I've seen PSG buying a lot of other players, so I hope their money will run out and they won't come back in for mine.

Can you also tell a bit more about your 4-4-1-1 setup? I'm looking at this as an alternative for the 4-3-3 I've been playing first season but haven't been very succesfull in pre season yet.

@blue heron PSG seem to have cooled their interest in De Gea for now, as he is no longer wanted by them. No bids for Pogba either, but still wanted by them. No bids in a while though. I've also rejected a number of transfer list request now and his training performance is becoming abysmal now. I'll keep fighting for him though.

    My 4-4-1-1 setup:

    GK: Sweeper Keeper - Support

    DL: Wing Back - Support

    DCL: Central Defender

    DCR: Ball Playing Defender

    DR: Full Back - Attack

    ML: Inverted Winger - Attack

MCL: Deep Lying Playmaker - Support

    MCR: Midfielder - Defend

    MR: Wide Playmaker - support

AMC: Attacking Midfielder - Attack, PI: Take more risks......I might try out "hold op ball" for him, cuz I want him to be more patient with the ball at times. Right now he's more of a scoring AMC than an assisting.

    ST: Complete Forward - Attack

Positive mentality - Sometimes I change to balanced if it's against a great opponent. Learned the hard way against Liverpool in the FA Cup final, and trailed 3-0 at half time. Played the CL final against Barcelona on balanced and it worked great.

Mixed passing and Low crosses (just a preference).

Counter Press, Counter Attacking, distribute to central defenders and full backs, short kicks from the GK, and play out of defense. If I'm defending the lead I sometimes change from counter press to regroup. Especially against top teams.

High LOE, High def. line. Tighter marking. More urgent pressing.

I think that's it. I'm on my laptop at the moment.

The Wide Playmaker role needs a type like Pereira, who' probablt more experienced in an AMC role. Had to retrain him as an MR. Lingard hasn't done quite as well as a wide playmaker yet. I'm struggling to find a suitable role for him now. I'm not particularly happy with the winger role for him. He's not that fast and his dribbling isn't top standard as well. Maybe Wide Midfielder support/attack would be better for him. I see him more as a pass and move type.

I have for the exact same player but it doesn't stop them trying in other windows.  I'ts when you you have the chat with him to see if you can resolve his issue. I picked the option where (cant fully remember what it said but i can give you what is sounded like or familiar to) it stated something along the lines of "I dont want to lose you, you're an important member of this team and are you willing to leave with these bunch of teammates" and then his reply was like " You're right, these are a great bunch of lads, thanks boss". He's a team leader in dynamics and vice captain. The fact you have won something with them means you've done well enough for him to want to drop his statement given playing time and praise.

I have manolas in situation and where barca came in for him and i just told him to drop it as we just won the league and ucl and he was an integral part of the backline and he went full ****** on me and said he wanted to leave and publicly and with team mates stating his leave. some players were like let him leave and i said to them that he's an important member and will do well to keep us challenging. Everyone took it well and dropped all concerns except manolas. I'm just gonna keep him and play him in until he drops it and has faith back with me. His relationship with me is he holds my standards high but his agent is a douche so i have a feeling it's him pushing him out all be it not part of the game lol.

Also what are you camera angles for the 3 vids given, it shows a lot more content and structure to the one's ive tampered with/tested to show the best form of showing highlights.

If I ever get the chance to have a conversation with them again, I will take that advice. I was way to aggressive with them.

The camera angles for the vids are standard TV. The one against Man City is standard Sideline though.

@Rasmus Have you tried the standard "you're too influential to leave" convo with them? De Gea's a Model Citizen so should be easy to work around, and that worked on both of them for me. Although I did win the League-CL double first season which probably helped.

Ugh, not exactly. I think I went a long the lines of "You are staying here and there's  nothing you can do about it" with both of them. Not sure I will ever be able to have that conversation again.

  12. Finished my first season in FM 19, and it was quite and odd one. Won the league by three points down to City, which got Guardiola sacked. Hired Klopp instead and saw Guardiola pack his bags to go and manage Liverpool. Pochettino was fired midseason and replaced by Rafa Benitez. Only managed to get them to seventh in the league.

I also won Champions League with a 3-2 win over Barcelona. Rashford with a brace and Pereira with the third. The scored their two goals in stoppage time in the second half.

Andreas Pereira was the Manchester United fans player of the year. He was absolutely fantastic in the wide playmaker role from right midfield. Assists, balls over the defense and stunning free kicks. Naturally, he became undroppable with 18 goals and 15 assists.

Pogba finished top the table in scoring in the league with a rather underwhelming 18 goals. Martial second with 16. Not a very good year for strikers. I did see Salah and Kane miss quite a lot of playing time.

    Formation: 4411:

    GK: De Gea

    DL: Shaw

    DCL: Lindelof

    DCR: De Ligt

    DR: Mbabu

    ML: Martial

    MCL: Herrera

    MCR: Matic

    MR: Pereira

    AMC: Pogba

    ST: Lukaku/Rashford

Lingard started the year at MR or RW, and did quite well, scoring 12 goals in the first half of the season. Was then injured for two months and replaced by Andreas Pereira. A blessing in disguise perhaps, cause after that Lukaku and Rashford began to score a whole lot more.

De Ligt and Mbabu were the only players brought in. I sold Mata, Darmian and Rojo in the January transfer window.

Started pre-season and brought in Sancho for 40m, Rodri for 28m, and Tierney for 29m. Rabiot joined for free. Hoping to see Fred and Young leave in the near future. Valencia was released when his contract ended.

The annoying part is now that De Gea and Pogba want to join PSG despite all of their succes. I even knocked them out of the Champions League. Has anyone been able to fend off PSG? Luckily I managed to extend De Gea's contract during the season, so I might win the battle with him. More concerned with Pogba. He's been awesome for me and has a unique skill set. So far I've rejected all bids from PSG and denied him a transfer list request. Should I let him leave and who do I bring in instead?

  13. I'll start with a caveat that my AMC Inside Forward is not my main goal scoring threat, but he is one of the top two on the team, last season knocking in 17 off the top of my head. I play him in the hole right behind the strikers, and he runs at the defence and gets into the box with regularity. Is your top 3 the narrow or the wide version?

It's a wide version, with the AML as the inside forward, AMC as the TREQ or APM/A and AMR is Winger/support. My striker is DLF/A.

So you have the AMC as your inside forward, which is the Shadow Striker in FM 14? And you are playing two strikers?

  14. Han anyone succeeded to make an Inside Forward your main scoring threat? Like getting 25-30 goals in a season? And if so, how did you do it? I am playing a 4231 formation, but I don't really know if it's really suited to field an inside forward. He just doesn't seem to run into the hole the DLF should create for him, and the APM/TREQ seems to be the one who runs in behind him, or are more willing to find my Winger on the right for a goal opportunity.

When my inside forward has the ball and runs towards goal with his great dribbling skills and good finishing, he is normally just tackled of the field, runs to the corner for a cross or just take a weak shot. What can be done to "fix" this?

  15. Hmm that's interesting, haven't considered that. Worried that might make things too attacking, as the SS isn't the most aggressive at tracking back. Do you think I'd run into spacing issues too with the SS, DLF, and AP, potentially interacting in similar spaces?

I am also playing a 4-2-3-1, having done so for two seasons of FM now. I play a midfield triangle of CM/D - DLP with a Trequartista on top. I was afraid that I wouldn't get much penetration by having two deep midfielders, but my IF/S on left, the Treq in the middle, the W/A on the right and the Advanced forward are doing a terrific job. However, I will sometimes change the DLP depending on the match situation. If I get up by a score I will just keep him as DLP. However, if I am chasing the game I will sometimes set him to a CM/A so he will be able to run into space between the lines. Obviously, it's a little risky, but can be necessary sometimes. Also, if the game is tight and I absolutely need a win against a weak opposition, I will also change the DLP to CM/A.

You can also look for the PPM "get forward whenever possible", and deploy him as a regular CM/S. In that way he will pick his forward runs a little better, I think.
