Yeh Mainoo looks like an 8 to me. Needs to be given licence to play, get forward, play again etc. England need a Xavi/Verratti character, or a Xabi Alonso, but seem to struggle to produce these kind of players. Carrick the last one I can remember.

Yeh re: Rice. That isn't his position. It was clear at the World Cup. But at Arsenal he has Jorginho who, whether you like him or not, is good at the job he's put in the team for. England don't have anyone like that so Rice has to do it. I think that needs to be accounted for whenever analysing a Rice performance for England.

This is what I thought. They just did their usual of sitting back, let Spain take control again, but this time vs. a more tired England that couldn't keep up with them defensively. Get away with it against Slovakia and the other fodder, but these top sides make you pay.
